radiosurgery I was introduced to him by him being on Broadway. I've always lived rap, but nowadays, it's all the same. Found out he was in a rap group called Clipping, and became addicted. Hamilton did boost him and Clipping in popularity.
HAS ANYBODY REALIZED THAT WITH THE COVER, THIS VIDEO, AND THE FACT THAT SPACE TERMS AND PLANETS ARE REFRENCED IN BOTH SINGLES THAT THIS COULD BE A RAP CONCEPT ALBUM ABOUT SPACE ISOLATION OH BOY
I know there's a lot of fans that have definitely experienced this, but god damn was it cool to see him blow up when people started to recognize him from Hamilton and the TV shows he started being in. Its a good feeling to see someone that you've respected and appreciated musically do so well in life. I remember meeting him at a show in DC way back in 2014 and he was such a humble and down-to-earth dude after the show. Chatting with him felt like chatting with an old friend.
I don't even listen to much hip hop but this is real fucking music. This is like some futuristic sci fi sounds and the flow is so fresh and alive. Real art, no gimmicks, no fronting, just cool ass sounds and good vibes.
These guys are very left-field for me. It's great. The only weak thing about concept albums is because it's difficult to take particular songs out and enjoy them on their own as it's meant to be listened in one go. I'm just like you, don't listen to hip-hop much but these guys are awesome.
100% agreed. Ive never really been into hip hop too, and the reason for that is that I had never heard any song, which might work, or at the very least could be intriguing as a musical piece, but clipping. (along with Death Grips before them) have actually turned me quite a lot. I decided to try them out right after I watched their Amoeba "Whats in my Bag?" ep, and I checked out There Was An Addiction To Blood. The intro felt intriguing to me, but "Nothing is safe" actually made me question my decision to check them out, despite me somewhat enjoying it, mostly due to Daveeds impressive rapping and lyrics (with lyrics basically Always coming in Last for me, when it comes to priorities in music). However, while I did not enjoy the track for the first couple of times I listened to it, "He Dead" kept me to listen through the entire album, and by the time it ended I was quite pleasantly surprised. Needless to say, I became an avid listener, but after "Visions of Bodies Being Burned" is when I became a real fan of the band, and recently I started to try out more of their stuff, and I havent yet warmed up to their debut, but the one time I listened through "Splendor & Misery" (while reading the lyrics along) has made me appreciate lyrics so much more than I have ever before, even though it was pretty hard from me to decipher what is going on (Ive never really been into poetry, or rather euphemistic poetry/lyrics). TL;DR I was not a fan of hip hop, because I didnt consider it Actual music, but clipping. presented itself as another proof for the opposite.
i rarely listen to hip hop, let alone rap, but clipping has such great beats and lyrics with so many meanings - daveed and the group itself is so underrated and ive fallen in love with their music
I feel that Daveed is obviously being at least a little influenced by his time with Hamilton into doing something a bit more narratively cohesive and theatrical.
Hey jarrick idk if u remember me but I had a channel a few years back called ken t. Tv or something like that and u was one of my most loyal subscribers but I got caught up with school and stuff and stopped I look totally different now cuz I lost a whole lot of weight but anyways I just wanted to tell you I have a new channel and I make a lot of lofi, old school, experimental and some trap beats on it I would appreciate if u check it out.
musically it's pretty different and seems kinda out of place on the album but the sci-fi literature references put a lot of context on the rest of the album. there are lines in the other songs about the protagonist rapping alone in different rooms in the ship. I think the video and song capture this pretty well with the noises from the ship. he demonstrates that he knows about concepts like the ansible and ekumen (the ansible is an instant communication device and the ekumen is an interplanetary union, both from ursula leguin's universe) which are both from the future. in the beginning of the album it seems more like he's been quickly uprooted and it's hard to tell whether he's from the past and taken to the future or from the future and just abducted. it shows that he's learned about the new universe he's in. he's also bragging through those references, showing that he has not only learned about them but mastered them. that's why it's towards the end of the album, setting up for his liberation on the last song. all i mean is it's a good and important song for the story.
eloy.silva I agree to some exstent. I think the video represents the album perfectly. The song in my opinion was put on the album afterwards as a single or hit. When i listened to the album i got a feeling of time being represented by music genras, This concept being the only way this song fits in with the flow of the album. I also noticed a love story threw the whole album between cargo 2331and the mothership. This concept was taking from me for the momment this song was playing. Maybe im missing the underline meaning
I hate how in interviews they always ask about Hamilton not his other stuff and rarely his amazing music and his fast he raps like Hamilton is my favorite thing ever but it doesn’t define him come on give him the recognition he so deserves and make him the most popular rapper in the world! His voice is perfect for it
I would always like the video first before it starts. Because If I don't, I would instantly get sucked into Daveed Digg's voice that I forgot on what the heck was I suppose to do--
so here's what i'm getting from the video so far... he takes medication, raps, shit floats, more meds he takes it, longer shit stays air born, something happens to the lights along side everything and him, he wakes up, starts rapping again and now even the table is air born, forces table down and everything's back to the ground and daveed just walks away trying to comprehend what the hell his medication does to him and everything around him. seems like the video in a nutshell and i still don't get it
This is truly good. I'm thinking a Clipping/Mike Patton collaboration would explode the musical universe. Brains would be splattered allover the place. Just a thought.
I went ahead and listened to the pre-order stream of the entire album (If you pre-ordered on Sub-Pop's store you can get it by signing into your account) and let me just say this album is different from anything they've done. It's a very different album just in general, in the vacuum of music. I love clipping but I'm really not sure how I feel about this album. I'm sure I'll love eventually, but this one's gonna be a grower, guys. Really curious to see others' reactions.
I personally love the concept. It definitely doesn't have many "songs" in the way that they can exist outside of the album, but the album as a whole is really quite beautiful
Just listened to the album twice in a row and it's SUPER conceptual. Get ready for some crazy space Sci-fi type beats. I think I appreciate it more the second time but I want to listen to it a shit ton more before I decide my thoughts on the album. But I'm pretty sure I'll love it by the time the vinyl arrives, hopefully anyway.
there seems to be a huge space vibe from the past two singles they released and the cover art for the album. i wonder if it might end up being a concept album about a person in space or just a simple coincidence
'Splendor & Misery is an Afrofuturist, dystopian concept album that follows the sole survivor of a slave uprising on an interstellar cargo ship, and the onboard computer that falls in love with him.'
Daveed Diggs is probably the most underrated rapper out there right now. Every single song is bars.
Forreal. Clipping needs major exposure.
+Zoe Emma Marie Problem is they are just industrial and experimental and dark enough not to get a lot of mainstream exposure
