- I will show you how to build what I consider the most useful shop accessory. This will change your ability to move quickly from one tool to the next and help keep your shop clean and organized. Just a beginner? Dont worry I will give you step by step instructions and measurements on how its made.
Advice from a structural engineer: if you drilled larger holes but down the centre line of the arm, you would reduce weight more and leave more material at the bottom and top (that is the material in compression and tension doing all the work). Thanks for this video!

Or do it plumber style and make the diameter larger than the arm.
I have a feeling the hole size was determined by his largest forstner bit. Do the holes even need to be circular? Could they be triangular, like you might see in a truss?

I must be lucky. My local big box often has Uni students working the panel saw and they're great. I've chatted with a few and they loved getting on the tools between assignments and lectures. I think that they'll turn out ok.
Wow! I would take an angry store associate any day. I seldom see any type of store associate. Aside from that, the panel saw at my home center has had an "out of order" sign on it since the day after the store opened. Where do you guys live?
Sadly the answer is almost always different when the store associate asks "Do you need help?" or if they ask "Can I help you?"

I rushed to Home Depot as soon as I saw the video. Bought 8” zip ties and a full sheet of plywood. Still watching the video but can’t wait to build this!

Can you teach me how to dull my Forstner bit to the proper dullness level before I start this build? I want to make sure I get it right.
At least 3hrs of tumbling into a bag of rocks. Dust it off and it is as good as new.
Yes, loan it to a college workshop for a year. Make sure it's always handy and can be borrowed for inexplicable work next door in metal.

Use it to drill through some 5mm steel plate.
Simple! Order a $60, sixteen piece forstner bit bit set from Amazon! They will come in a nice case, but loose in the case, and will have pre-dulled each other in transit!

Why is it that all Home Depot/Lowes employees are so cranky when you ask them to use the panel saw? Seems like it would be the coolest thing you would be allowed to do there. Besides driving the forklift.

It's because you actually asked them to do work... which is not what they are there to do.
Because contrary to what it may look like, its retail. Have you ever heard anything good about working retail. Can you imagine your boss giving you a task list to complete during your shift and every time that you pick up your clipboard, someone needs help with something completely unrelated and outside your department but the person who's scheduled there is out sick. So now you're supposed to be pulling a $5k order but first need to help Nancy fine the right screw then explain to Harry, who's trying to save a buck, why you can't cut a 12 foot board in 12 one foot pieces and so on.
I'm with you, I would think it's a great excuse to not answer questions about where to find a paint brush
I worked at HD part time. I never felt like we were treated well by management (or customers) we were always understaffed because their staffing is based on profits on that day the previous year. Also you could show up, as a garden employee and be asked to cover any department in the store. Sometimes you were the only employee on the floor for two departments. I quit the day they were going to give me employee of the month. The look on the store managers face was priceless.

Very cool, but with room for an improved range of motion!
I made myself a boom arm years ago and it's still working great. But I doubled up on the hinges, so four door hinges. One pair goes one direction, the other pair goes the other direction. Joined together around a 2x2 near the wall. Doing this lets the arm swing both directions. And I lied about it being on the wall, it's mounted in the center of my garage on the garage door opener mounts (hanging down just below the opener) - and I get almost a full 360 degrees of coverage. I also put a 4' fluorescent light fixture on the bottom so I have better light under the boom wherever I want. Full disclosure: I only use my boom for power and light, and holding spring clamps - no vacuum. But that's for version 2.
Throw in a third set of hinges in the middle of the boom and you can have the boom end point any place between full-length and "no"-length by doubling back upon itself, or anywhere in between.

This is a great idea. I have a pair of unused gate hinges that I think will be ideal for this application. My current solution has a shop vac with a very long hose that is suspended from a pulley with a counter-weight. It gives me plenty of coverage around my former two-car garage shop. It keeps the hose out of the way (mostly); but it's not easy to use. This looks like a much better solution.
One of the best workworking channels here, wish there were at least subtitles in normal units(metric)when giving measurements, so we the rest 95% of the world could understand it! :D
Yeah, I agree, many woodworking channels are doing it nowadays, only subtitles in metric would make a huge difference.

Liked the idea so much I built one for myself. I made my arm telescoping so it reached centre of garage as well as work bench. Very convenient for cleanup instead of wrestling hose.

Saw your shop tour video and built one of these a few months ago. This thing is awesome! Best thing I've added in a long time, thank you! So much easier than dragging the vac everywhere! I built mine a little different. Framed with 2x3's and skinned with 1/4" plywood, my hose actually goes inside the arm. If I ever do another one I might actually frame it with 3/4" pine. The plywood skin makes it super rigid and it's only supporting a plastic hose and eventually maybe a power strip.

Was gonna install a 20 amp outlet on the ceiling over my bench by running conduit up my 10ft wall then buy an $80 cord reel to mount up there so I had power over my bench. This idea saved me hundreds of dollars and hours of time! Thank you!
I was waiting for John Lee Hooker! But seriously, thanks man, I'm going to build one of these for my new (old) dust extraction that I recently acquired. It's such an obviously useful addition to the home workshop. I'm gonna paint mine in some leftover house paint I have lying around. It won't mind!
I was just tripping on my damn hose yesterday! I think I need that boom arm, and now that you've explained all the complicated angles and mitres, I really don't have any excuses. Plus I already have a large container of various zip ties lengths, so there's a savings!
Normally I like to complicate an easy build. But I was in a rush and knew this video was out there. So I busted this out real quick. Just hung it and it’s fantastic. But my triangle was 11.25” because that’s the scrap i had. So only some credit to you. Thanks!

When I first saw your boom arm, I thought it was crazy. After dragging around my dust collecting build in the shop for the past year, I am done with it. Putting my dust collection setup in one place and leveraging a boom arm is ideal.

super smart idea. I do a similar kind of thing with a/v and power cables, primarily for audio production in my garage. this example will definitely help my v2.0 and beyond. (I do a bit of "woodworking" in the form of screwing with guitars and doing setups, so a vacuum system would be wise over my bench for metal dust and fumes when wiring etc.)
After watching this video and passing out in a puddle of water from crying laughing I thought that this video was insanely funny. BRAVO! You deserve a OSCAR! Also whatever hardware store everyone went to get the plywood sheet probably thanks you for boosting their business. lol. Honestly, great video for those who complained!!!
Great video- that boom arm is a great idea and well executed.
Really nice design and build. And great tips on the construction. My bench is in the center of the shop with dust collection underneath. I built my boom from scrap aluminum channel and attached to a ceiling beam using doubled up hinges. Counterweights to balance it out. It swings through 340 degrees so reaches all my dust makers. Functional, but not as handsome a design as yours.

Nice job. I think I might update my shonky version that's held together with string. I've got a narrow long garage so a joint in the middle would make this even better.

Regarding the shop window; I cleaned it up nice, and sealed it with 3/4” ply.
I lost some natural light, but gained huge wall space!
From the exterior you can not tell it’s sealed, and also if I ever move, it’s an easy disassembly.

Very good set up I am still trying to get into woodworking haven’t saved enough for a table saw yet. But have been thinking about how I will do dust management this is genius. Only thing I’m going to change is adding a locking mechanism to lock it against the garage wall as I park my cars in their and don’t need it getting knocked into my Jeep

I've got the quick and dirty version of this: a big spring clamp with a hook on it big enough to hold my small dust collection hose, which clips to a ladder I store on hooks from rhe ceiling. Can adjust to any rung to hang the hose where I need it.
The "very dull forstner bit" really got me 😂

Great tips! I’m a total beginner in woodworking. I’m trying to copy this setup, but I’m having trouble connecting the hose (1-7/8” x 7’ RIGID hose?) from the extractor to the cyclone and the RIGID hose (this one’s clearly mentioned with link but doesn’t snug fit) from the cyclone to the Festool hose. I’d really appreciate more details on this.
