  • Here is the 1989 LAPD Chevy Caprice in 1:18 scale, created by Great Lakes Diecast. Im 50-50 on the end result and i will explain why. First, i ordered it in April 2018. It didnt get completed or shipped out until October 2018.. 7 months. The reason i was given is, the builder wanted to wait until the Terminator Monaco came out before doing anything else to it. Because he wanted to use the lightbar from the terminator Monaco, since that lightbar actually DOES belong to the 1980s Caprice, and not the Monaco ironically. So the wait agitated me heavily. Next up, i asked him to make the 5 digit door number 87043, he used 80445. The license plate on the model is not the plate they used in the 1980s. I sent photos of that plate in the original inquiry. The most glaring issue is the alley lights. 1980s LAPD alley lights sat behind the lightbar not directly underneath. Also this lightbar in particular does not have the rear ambers. Apparantely the dukes of hazzard lightbar does have rear ambers, and also has the correct mounting brackets and generally just looks better. None of the doors open, the trunk doesn't open, neither does the hood. The bottom has no detail its it's literally flat. Also i would have liked the old school gated partition they used to have, however upon closer inspection im not sure thats even possible considering the front seats are reclined far back.
With all that said i was charged $175 american for this not including tax.
With THAT said i am extremely happy i got myself a 1980s LAPD Caprice. Im happy he installed the shotgun mount, I'm happy he installed the old school computer and radar. Im happy it at least has a spotlight even if its flat. The 80s LAPD Caprice is my favorite cop car ever. This was the car used during the height of the Los Angeles gang wars. I chose these numbers because these are the numbers from the 77th division of the LAPD in South Central. From what i understand 77th division is like the fort apache of LA. The toughest division in the roughest part of LA especially in the 1980s...
I want to call it "war machine" lol

A few things, I was LAPD during the late 80’s and remember these units very well. There were never any gated cages in any of our units back then. They came way later. Late 90’s I believe. Whenever we arrested someone an officer had to sit in the back seat with the suspect/suspects if you can believe that. Also we never had front post/pillar mounted spotlights. We had one handheld spotlight that plugged into the vehicle and almost always was stowed on the dash pushed up against the inside windshield. And you’re right about the alley lights, they were right behind the lightbar. Another thing was the Ithaca shotgun was floor mounted in front of the front seat (below our knees and horizontal). LA County Sheriff had theirs mounted the way you have it. I can’t see the MDT(Computer) to see if it’s correct but it looks good. And you’re right about the shop numbers not matching. I think we had blue Exempt plates. Otherwise it looks great!

Apologies for not commenting on this. I created a new channel. I was researching old LAPD vehicles prior to having this made and I did notice a lack of cages. I wasnt aware the shotguns laid on the floor. That must have been just a movie thing I guess. With the dashboard mounts. It does indeed have the old school radio inside.
I have a feeling greenlight will be producing 1:18 scale versions of the 80s LAPD vehicles within the next year or so. They just started producing them in 1:64 scale. Im very excited about this. They were blocked for years because of copyright issues but they found a loophole. They are making them based on the "terminator 2" movie.

For years i am looking for a 1:43 model of the 89 Caprice in LAPD outfit, but nothing so far. The only models out there that are serious enough are BOS models' NYPD 1:18 Caprice, and Neo scale's NYC Caprice taxi.
The rest look more like toy cars.
Almost like there's a copyright on these things or something...🤔

i'm pretty sure this isnt custom made, the company MCG released a cop version of the caprice for 70 usd but then again your review is from 2018 and i am not sure if they were out by then but certainly by the second half of 2019 as thats when I reviewed a black street version which was sold alongside the cop car.
EDIT: nevermind, it is custom made, I just got confused because there's also an official mcg cop car version of this, but it has different wheels, a different logo on the doors and no numbers on the trunk

DrFunky4 Okay. I did a custom order with him before but for a 1/43 scale. He’s currently working on a 1/24 scale VSP Taurus for me. However, I’ve also found a guy on YT who does excellent custom builds called AG Customs. I plan to have AG make another VSP model of this because he can add more features and be more accurate. I guess Great Lakes has a lot of service, but he couldn’t make me a VSP Taurus with the Motormax model with painted chrome rims like how the real Virginia State Police vehicle has.
I settled for a 1/24 Greenlight Ford Taurus (SHO). It’s slightly different and not as accurate, but I think it would look pretty cool. But I’m planning to go to AG Customs to get a very realistic model done.

And i had to fight with him to move him along. Then when i got it the alley lights were too small and in the wrong place. Alomg with some other details that were a little off. In happy he made the unit for me but i paid like $250. For $250 it should be perfect and it wasnt. I might go with AG next time.

Hi! I have some bad news. The man who made this car for me, went out of business. This is a 1980s model Caprice. They dont make LAPD units this size, for this year and model. YET!! key word, YET. Ive been following a diecast company called greenlight, and they have been making small versions of this exact vehicle, which makes me think the large scale you see in this video might be on the way. Follow greenlight on facebook. They do sell LAPD cars this size, but they are the newer version cars. If you would like to talk further send me a private message if at all possible
