- Highlander (1986)
Highlander is a 1986 British-American fantasy action-adventure film directed by Russell Mulcahy from a screenplay by Gregory Widen, Peter Bellwood, and Larry Ferguson. It stars Christopher Lambert, Roxanne Hart, Clancy Brown, and Sean Connery. The film chronicles the climax of an age-old war between immortal warriors, depicted through interwoven past and present-day storylines. It is the first film in the Highlander franchise.
Connor MacLeod (Lambert) is born in the Scottish Highlands in the 16th century. After being mortally wounded by the murderous Kurgan (Brown) in battle, he makes a seemingly miraculous recovery and is banished from his village under suspicion of witchcraft. Five years later, MacLeod is found by swordsman Ramírez (Connery), who trains him in swordplay and explains that they and others were born immortal, invincible unless beheaded. Immortals wage a secret war, fighting each other until the last few remaining will meet at the Gathering to fight for the Prize. In 1985, the Gathering is finally happening in New York City, and MacLeod must ensure that the Prize is not won by the Kurgan.

End Music by: Diego A. R. Delfino
Queen created the music for this film. There is an album “A Kind of Magic”, it has the full version of all the Queen songs in the film.
Great film.
Almost all. It doesn't include their version of New York New York. Great album though.
@@stevensauer8539 agreed, wish there was a full recording of that. I can’t find it
FLASH! Ah Aah. Saviour of the universe!
And "Hammer To Fall" (the song at the UZI guy scene) is not on that album. Instead the title song of Iron Eagle, "One Vision", is on that album.
@@JoergWeida I hadn't thought about "Hammer to Fall" since it was included on "The Works" two years before "A Kind of Magic" was released.
And that was the end of that. A perfect ending to a perfectly good fun and absolutely iconic little movie. Completely self contained and all wrapped up by the finish, leaving no scope for them to wear it out with a string of exponentially worse sequels...
Agree with you about the sequels. Although I did enjoy the TV series which was filmed in my hometown of Vancouver BC Canada.
Edit: The first season was shot in Toronto.
@@stanleydavidlepretre4241 The tv show was good (as an alternate timeline).
Swordfights, Connery, 2nd best villain in movie history (imho) and music by the best band ever! Yes, I love this movie!
Fun fact: Clancy Brown wasn't paid for his role. He was a new actor that jumped at the chance of working with Connery, and since the budget was so small he agreed to do it for free.
That might be true since the best movie villain is Rene Belloq and I will not be taking advice at this time.
Cinematography notes:
-The opening aerial shot inside MSG was achieved with a rig they called a Skycam, effectively suspending the camera on wires. Developments of this would later change how live sports would be shot for decades.
-The fast, graceful dolly shots that tracked Kurgan and MacLeod as they clashed in front of the windows backlit in blue were actually achieved with a Louma crane rather than a camera dolly. They accidentally discovered that pushing or kicking the arm of the crane just so made it spin gracefully out across the warehouse floor, so they restaged the scene and sent the arm of the Louma spinning out again on purpose.
-The fast, frenetic cutting style came from director Russell Mulcahy's background as a pioneering music video director (he directed the first video MTV ever aired). It was so unusual in feature films at the time that the producers watched dailies of the footage Mulcahy was shooting and, thinking there was no way all this random shit was ever going to cut together, wondered if they'd have to fire him. To set their minds at ease about how all these random closeups were going to cut together, Mulcahy put together a sequence (the parking lot swordfight and the subsequent quickening) to show them what the intended effect was going to look like.
-It wasn't just the suits who had doubts about HIGHLANDER's flashy, kinetic style: Old school British cinematographer Gerry Fisher likewise had doubts about Mulcahy's visually aggressive style and constant camera movement, though Mulcahy ultimately got his way.
So glad that you enjoyed this gem of a movie. Australian director Russell Mulcahy hits a homerun with only his second feature film. Of course Mulcahy had an extensive background in music videos by this time, including "Video killed the radio star" by the Buggles. At 71 years of age he has directed over 60 films and is still going strong. You can tell even from this early work that he has the magic eye. His use of tracking shots and imaginative transitions are just some of his hallmarks.
Can I just say something about the final duel on the Silvercup sign. This movie was made in 1985 before cgi. That whole set had to be built and then demolished using only practical effects of the time. So impressive and very dangerous, I'm sure.
Roxanne Hart as "Brenda " is amazing and her stellar performance grounds the film in reality. Sean Connery and Christopher Lambert are reliable in their roles, but my tip of the cap has got to go to Clancy Brown for his marvelously manic and over the top portrayal of the "Kurgen". He was the breakout star in this role and deservedly so. His "Kurgen" is a complete animal, and completely unredeemable.
Rarely have I seen such a simple concept executed so expertly.
Initially panned by the critics, the movie made only 13 million against a budget of 19 million. A flop. But with cable TV and home video rentals, "Highlander" quickly rose to the status of cult classic.
Lastly, I watched your reaction to "Excalibur", one of my all-time favorites, definitely top 5. You have excellent taste in movies my friend. 👌Looking forward to more from you. Thanks!
At the time of The Gathering, whoever is left alive gains all the power collected through the centuries by the Immortals.
A favorite film from my childhood! I remember being shocked to read an article a few years ago where Clancy Brown says he effectively wasn't paid for doing this film, and that he never got any residuals.
It arguably made his career though. Hollywood will be Hollywood.
He had the last laugh because everybody knows and spots him immediately. As promotion he did well out of this classic.

A Frenchman playing a Scot.
A Scot playing a Spaniard.
Neither one nailing the accent.
But none of them would have the accents expected. It seems unlikely they would have been speaking Inglis which was the language of government. They are presumably both speaking a 16th century form of Scots Gaelic so Connor would have no accent, or maybe a highland one, but they might have been speaking French which was still common among the nobility. Ramirez would have an accent reflecting some weird mashup of all the languages he has known. Given that Mr. Connery wasn't going to change his own accent for the part it is a good enough stand in. But what do I know, and yes the incongruity is funny.
What’s worse is Lambert’s wonky accent when you realize he was born in New York
Thats why its Genius 😂
A Scot playing a Spaniard who is egyptian
I can forgive both though, since Connor and Ramirez were Immortals. If you live long enough, and go to many places, eventually your natural accent will fade or vanish.
They are not time travelers.
They're immortal.

Thats so cuuute!!
Let me also just recommend that if you're going to continue this series, skip Highlander 2 and maybe just go straight to the TV Series with Duncan MacLeod. Way better that way.
I would mostly agree with that, but I kind of enjoyed the 3rd movie.
2 and 3 had moments, but you have to ignore continuity
Yes watch the series it's a good one and it has some genuine great episodes
2 is awful if you think of continuity but if you see it as a standalone movie it is pretty fun in a silly way.
@@n.johanness7451 I can agree with that.
There are 4 MacLeods in the Highlander universe. 1st immortal in the clan was Colin Macleod who survives even into the farthest future
2nd oldest is Connor Macleod
3rd is Duncan McLeod
4th and last Macleod is Quentin Macleod who's born into the far future.

Had you noticed one REALLY important aspect of this movie who is the Photography of it? its made in "squares", like you are reading a comic book, with theme collors on scenes, mists, fogs, shadows, etc.. amazing.. when you see it again, pay attention to those details, likewhen Brenda and Connor meet in the bar, she leaves... then he leaves, you see he walking (its a comic book square) the camera keeps moving left till show her hidden watching him THATS the second square.. or Fazil in the first battle, lost his glasses on the floor, the glasses are filmed and you see the reflex of Fazil running away by the lens.. the vigilant scene, he with the machine gun scr4eaming to two collored shadows on the walls behind him... AWESOME photography all over.
Best movie quote ever: IT'S BETTER TO BURN OUT THAN TO FADE AWAY!
Fun fact: Clancy Brown - the bad guy - does the voice of Mr Krabs in Spongebob 🧐
Fasil was played by Peter Diamond. He was also the stunt coordinator for the film, which may explain the backflipping shot he gets to show off in. He had a big career in stunts, including the original Star Wars trilogy.
Clancy Brown's Kurgan should have been in the American Film Institute's list of fifty greatest movie villains.

This comes from the song Hey Hey, My My by Neil Young 1979, was included as the intro to Def Leppard's song Rock of Ages, and was the line in Kurt Kobane's suicide note before hi death.
After Kurt died Neil Young refuses to sing this song ever again.
ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITE MOVIES
An Orioles fan in NY when this was filmed the Orioles were the World Champions
A Frenchman playing a Scotsman wielding a katana given to him by a Scotsman playing a Spaniard...
He now has all that knowledge and only a limited amount of time to make a difference with it.
The extended version has several scenes added that the original theatrical release and the VHS and DVD version didn't have. One of which is the WWII flashback. I that scene was appropriately cut in my opinion. The Cheese is already pretty think in this movie without that one. Don't take me wrong, this is a classic... and one of my favorite, but sometimes, leave the release alone.
The Highlander series is entertaining to watch. Adrian Paul insisted they create a new MacCleod so he could have his own character. He was real good in the role. They did the series to gain control of it after some foreign investors screwed up the second movie. Watch the second movie as a standalone or a “reboot”. The third one is not as good as this one but better than two. It tells what Connor did after Heather died. The fourth one seems like it tried to end the storyline while bringing the tv series and movies together. The fifth movie was entertaining as a standalone movie for the tv series. 29:22 interesting fact about this movie is Christopher Lambert didn’t speak one word of English when they cast him and he had to work with a coach that created this dialect he speaks. 46:14 he was in “The Phantom Menace” as Captain Panaka the Queens head guard. 47:40 I read somewhere that it made sense to have the scar on his neck when no other immortals have scars cause losing their head is how they die. So it could be said that Ramirez killed a part of the Kurgen when they fought. They’re working on a new highlander movie that I hope they don’t cast the new actor (which appears to be Henry Cavill) in the role of Connor MacCleod. Hopefully like the tv series he’s a different MacCleod from a different era.
Thanks, Jonathan! ⚔ My friends and I were very excited about this one, back in the day. It was directed by Russell Mulcahy, who also directed so many of my favorite Duran Duran videos. I had such a crush on Christophe Lambert. You should make a point to see him in GREYSTOKE: THE LEGEND OF TARZAN, LORD OF THE APES (1984). 🦍
Nope, there are no other Highlander films. Just this.
There can be only one.
I'm a bit chagrined to admit that the thing I look forward to most for anyone reacting to this film is them seeing the Queen credit in the opening. I really loved this when I was 14. Now, ehhh, well nostalgia I guess. Looking forward to the Henry Cavill reboot. He said the swordplay in The Witcher pales to what's coming for the upcoming film.
Loved Highlander .. but it was weird with Connery playing a Spaniard, but with his Scottish accent. And Lambert playing a Scot … with a French accent.
They didn’t even bother with accent coaches for cast.
If you love an 80s movie that’s shot like a music video, definitely watch Cobra. That film lends itself more to montage than cool transitions, but Andrew Robinson (Garak from Deep Space Nine, the dad in Hellraiser) is in it!
The Kurgan is also Mr. Krabs from SpongeBob. There is a remake in the works with Henry Cavel.
That’s Clancy Brown he’s Mr. Krabs from SpongeBob. He’s the drill instructor in starship troopers. He’s the guy in John Wick. He’s also in Asoka for Star Wars.
Head prison guard in Shawshank.
Scotland 70% and Wales 80% share have the most of Iberian peninsula (Portugal, Spain) celt dna so yeah Sean Connery can play a spaniard in a movie… the Scottish love it when I posted one scene of Sean playing the spaniard on Reddit years ago .
Every modern video game where you level up after a kill comes directly from this film.
It is nonlinear story telling, but it has no time travelling
The series fleshed out the story a lot more...
I love this reaction. As someone who may or may not have held real swords while watching certain movies, I can relate to the passion. Put a period on this sh!t tho, cuz there are no worthy sequels.
I saw this in the theater when it came out. I was 16 and I remember thinking this was the coolest movie ever! The zoo/lion scene was originally cut and not in the theatrical release. Neither was the scene where Connor rescues Rachel as a little girl in WW2. Those were added back in to the Director's cut. I do see why the zoo scene was cut though originally as it doesn't really work. It was only put in so we see that Kurgan was stalking Connor and learned that Brenda was his love interest, but the acting in that scene is pretty bad. There have been rumors for YEARS of a remake and it has never come to fruition yet. I was always bothered by two huge goofs in the movie. 1) When Connor fights Fasil in the garage we see the latter drop his sunglasses and run away in their reflection on the ground, but in the next scene where he cuts the electrical power to the garage he has them back on - major glaring continuity error. And 2) The wires holding up Christopher Lambert in the air when he finally gets The Prize are obvious. I suppose they didn't have the editing tech back in '85 to erase them in post. That along with the now hokey cartoonish effects after every Immortal is killed are all big reasons this movie could be redone better w/modern CGI if they cast it right.
The Cannon Film Group was notorious for their cheap film making and, let's say, 'creative financing'. Like, using money from one movie to finance another.
They made a few good movies, many entertaining movies, but most of them were done cheap and badly (even many entertaining ones), especially in the 80's and 90's.
Though I'm sure many of them are on many people's 'guilty pleasure' lists. I know on mine are a few of their movies.
Or in other words, they were able to edit better and have better special effects back then. Cannon just wasn't able to or didn't want to pay for it.
This movie is actually being remade! Henry Cavill is in it, and it’s being directed by the John Wick director. So you know it’s going to be faithful and respectful. They also understand the importance of Queen, and have said they plan to somehow integrate the great music. Can you imagine sword fights with the physical abilities of Henry and the fight choreography of John Wick?
I wish they would stop with all the remakes. These are the best possible dudes to try, but …..
I do love the movies but if you want to get into Highlander, the TV series was phenomenal. Even the movie Highlander endgame started from the TV series
When this film was being made, no sequel was intended, and the initial box-office was miserable. But the later success on VHS resulted in several sequels, from 1991 to 2007. An animated film was made that same year, and 3 TV shows were done from 1992-1997. A spinoff of the 1992 series, centered around the character of Methos, was made in 2001. Now, a series reboot is being planned with Henry Cavill in the lead, and filming expected to begin in early 2024.
I am very sorry to say, but you are mistaken. There has never been a sequel movie. The information you have provided are lies originated and perpetuated by IMDB, Wikipedia, Amazon Prime Video, Apple, Discovery, Paramount, the Illuminati, the Pentaverate, Thanos, the Hamburgler, and many others as part of a larger conspiracy for reasons I do not know... except for the spinoff TV series, which was pretty cool...
Highlands of Scotland are worth a visit 😮
I was at Eilean Donan castle and Loch Shiel 25 years ago.
19:36 You really latched onto the time travel theory without any suggestion of it, didn’t you?
Wasn't enough Queen?
Jonathan, Idk if you guys do reactions to series, but I would definitely recommend Highlander: The Series. At least do season 1, 4 or 5 episodes to get a taste of it. The writing/dialogue is better. The acting is better. It stars British actor Adrian Paul as Duncan MacLeod - an descendant who came a couple generations after Connor. It serves as an alternate sequel to the 1986 film, it features a storyline in which Connor has not won "the Prize" sought by all Immortals, who still exist post-1985.
Unfortunately, the cinematic sequels didn't do justice to the original film, but the TV series satisfactorily expands the mythology created in Highlander.
Ironically, Christopher Lambert was doing all this sword fighting and he couldn’t see two feet in front of his face. The reason his gaze is so otherworldly is because, from the character’s perspective, everything is a blur. From the actor’s perspective, literally everything is a blur without his glasses.
He couldn't wear contacts?

Really great reaction! I enjoyed it immensely. But why do so many first time reactors come into Highlander thinking it's a time travel movie? I've seen a number of people react to Highlander, and it seems the majority seem to think it has a time travel aspect.
Because we have so many movies and shows with time travel and none with immortals. Not even vampire movies and shows go into that part much any more.
It has become normal to think of time travel when we are shown other times.
Same with multiverses. Both have become cheap gimmicks.
They read and hear the intro from Connery, but it never sticks.
4:57 How are you with a broadsword and Katana?
They ARE making one, it's in the works now. Henry Cavell is the one.
Naw, not a hot take at all. I'm older, I watched this when it was new, it's a nostalgic favorite, but it's not sacred and it definitely hasn't aged well. I'm usually not a fan of remakes but this could have a good one if someone who loved it did it right. If it could get the same care and attention as the Bladerunner reboot got, it could be a great movie.
Regarding the French Duel, after he'd been stabbed several times, he finally apologized for insulting his wife, thus restoring honor. So the servant suggesting his lord shoot MacLoud in the back was dishonorable in itself. Just for anybody else who couldn't figure out why he did that :B
Also, they're good at MAKING the Kurgan a monster? When Ramirez was telling us about the Kurgans, he said they throw children into pits with hungry dogs for entertainment. Is that not monstrous enough? XD
bro, you could play Dougal or Murdoch in the Highlander remake. or the psycho Vietnam Vet. or the hotel clerk...
Another very good immortal movie (IMO) is The Man From Earth. It's more of a set piece (mainly takes place in one room), and no special effects, flashbacks, or big name actors (although some will be familiar), but solid dialogue and great concept overall written by one of the original Star Trek series and Twilight Zone writers, Jerome Bixby.
The TV series was way better. The casting/acting/writing.

Directors cut. There was no gratuitous flipping in the first parking garage fight, no WW2 flashback, and no zoo scene with the lion in the original American version. Good luck finding the original release of the second movie. It had a VHS release, but he the directors cut came out. The original version of the sequel was a faster running movie in my opinion, the directors cut was maybe more true to the original vision, but slow moving.

The television series was solid.
A Scotsman playing a Spaniard & a Frenchman playing a Scotsman. Go figure
I'm sure others have mentioned it, but the other films are horrible. The TV show is not bad. The way I view it is the original is the final plot and every thing else is just a prequel.
If I'm honest I think the prize is a bit of a dud I'd rather keep the immortality
"There can be only one"... not "There can only be one". See the difference? Sorryt.. had to get that off myt chest. :-)
There's other Highlander movies but none of them even come close to the first one. The 2nd will make you feel dumber having watched it, the 3rd is actually a decent movie, 4th had potential but suffered from some extremely bad editing and the 5th will have you asking yourself what the hell you just watched.
Not only that but they follow a weird formula. The 2nd is a direct sequel to the 1st, the 3rd pretends like the 2nd doesn't exist and continues on from the 1st, the 4th pretends like the 2nd or 3rd doesn't exist and continues from the 1st and from the series. The 5th just ignores all the movies completely and continues from the series.
There can be only one! That goes for the movies as well, the sequels are garbage. The TV series was decent though. Fun reaction.
I think idea of "the prize" differs on the basis who gets it. Thats why Ramirez did not want Kurgan to win, because he is evil and would probably turn it into world domination thing. Connor wanted a family and to be mortal, so the prize was that for him.
Highlander sequels are probably the worst sequels ever made lol...there is like 4-5 of them. The reason why they are so awful is they constantly tried to explain origins of immortals and come up with the most bizarre stupid ideas. There is also complete left field U-turn on the whole concept and inconsistency in the second movie...so you are fine stopping here. This story works just as a single movie. Everything else cloud be watched just as a joke. TV Show was awesome for its time if you were a kid back in the 90s.
And there is actually a story for years that remake with Henry Cavill is in the works, but I don't know will it ever be made.

Clancy Brown, my favorite movie villain of all time as the Kurgan, is still working and still can be as intimidating as hell. He plays normal people, like as a one episode bad guy businessman on Leverage, but he also plays the bizarre, like a red demonic looking alien on an episode of The Mandolorian. But his longest lasting role is possibly his most disturbing of all: Mr. Krabs on Spongebob Squarepants.

No matter what anyone wants to tell you, remember that are are no sequel movies. There, however, is a quite good TV series. It works surprisingly well with the movie's story, with just the tiny change that the fight at the end wasn't the final fight for the prize but just one fight along the way.
