How to Speak up in Meetings - with Confidence

  • One of THE most common things I get asked is, “How can I be more confident and speak more meetings?”
    While this is a challenge not limited to women, the question seems to mainly come from women who work in male-dominated industries.
    If you feel that you struggle with being heard in meetings or that you want more confidence then this video will help. In it I share practical tips and strategies that I train my own clients, and that you can apply immediately at work.
    The ability to to be a valuable participant in meetings is a MUST have skill that is vital to your career advancement. It can also strengthen your influence, and it will more likely get you noticed, promoted and recognised for your leadership potential.
    You can't afford not to level up your meeting skills and confidence.
    In the comments below let me know what you struggle most with in meetings - do you get cut off and interrupted all the time?
    Do you find it hard to even interject and share your ideas?
    Do you preface everything you’re about to say and apologise for taking up the space like “I’m sorry to interrupt the flow of conversation, but...”
    Let me know what you do and let’s tackle this together.

    TECHNIQUE: One way to make sure you get heard is to wait for a pause or silent moment. If someone starts talking at the same time, advise the room that when that person is done speaking, that you have something to say. Be ready to speak and jump right on in when that person is done. A second way, is to raise your hand to let it be known that you have something to say. You may have to raise it a few times.
    Once the room knows that you have something to say, they will get on your side and make sure you have a chance to speak. At this point, they can't wait to hear what it is that you have to say which will be encouraging giving you more confidence to speak. You only have to say excuse me to get their attention never having to apologize. Speak, knowing that what you have to say is valuable and they will receive it as just that. Speak, not caring what anybody is going to think because if it matters to you, thats all that matters.

    English is my second language and I can use it in above average level. The biggest challenge for me is how to explain things specially technical ones to non technical members of the meeting. It takes some brain power to think for the technical solution(solved inside the head using native language) then translate them into English. In some occasions it could make me look as if I don't know enough answers because of stuttering and a lot of filler words (uhmm). Oh those bad memories! 😅🤢

    I like that this didn’t turn into a male bashing session.
    Women get cut off by women as they are by men.
    Women should speak up when they are interrupted, without anger, BUT even if the anger is there, they should not hold back because of it and speak up anyway; they’ll get better at it with time.

    Shade...you should also address the notable fact that discriminatory animus is also a heavy barrier for females and minorities (including males) in the Corporate America world (I assume Australia too!). Sometimes regardless of how loud a female, or even male minority might "speak up" in meetings, they are still minimized as much as possible due to clear discriminatory pretext. In this video it appears you wanted to go to that topic, but you just did not. Thoughts??

    • @ShadeZahrai
      @ShadeZahrai  4 роки тому

      Yes, unfortunately discrimination against women and minorities still exists in workplaces. And the research backs this up. One of my core beliefs is that "every differentiation of class, creed, or color must automatically be obliterated, and never be allowed, under any pretext, and however great the pressure of events or of public opinion, to reassert itself. If any discrimination is at all to be tolerated, it should be a discrimination not against, but rather in favor of the minority, be it racial or otherwise." I choose to contribute to the narrative by empowering people to develop the mindset and tools to help overcome such obstacles, and the encouragement to promote collaboration.

    • @lucyaklar6345
      @lucyaklar6345 4 роки тому +1

      @@ShadeZahrai I respectfully disagree Shade. If you were fully "empowering" people to develop tools to overcome the heavy burden of discrimination, then part of that process is to directly acknowledge the root of the problem. You made no mention of discrimination, however if you are empowering a mindset to overcome it, you need to bring it into the forefront of the discussion. That's the problem here in America (..and again probably Down Under too). Discrimination is always that "scary" or "taboo" background topic that no one wants to face head on, yet it is often the 800-pound gorilla variable in the room that in many instances caused the problem in the first place for the woman and/or minority sitting in the meeting being minimized. You should have injected it into the conversation, as it would not have negatively impacted your empowerment approach one bit. Plus, as an attorney, I trust that you see the perspective I represent here for many of your You Tube viewers. Thank you.

    I liked the idea that we need to value our on thoughts and ideas before anyone would and well that's the most difficult thing for me. I gather courage and speek up an the moment I see others are not welcoming it I start feeling less valued and stupid.

      My most difficult thing is whenever I have an idea related to my work that I feel is useful i get so much carried away that lose the inability to look through the bigger picture.So whenever I present the idea, my teammates bombard me with what is said won't work because of so and so reason and I feel stupid and valueless

    Thank you! What if you are interrupted by a senior while asking a question and they cut you off before even listening to whole idea. This give hit to credibility and also make you feel irrelevant.

    Watched this long time ago. Never thought a time would come for me to dig this up and saver every bit of it for my next meeting! So very helpful!! Recently I've been quite frustrated with one of our meetings where I was constantly cut off by one of my colleagues. After a while, I found myself feeling dreadful to even go to the meeting anymore. Now examing it, it's really like what you said - a male dominated (I'm the only female of us 4), and it seems ok among the three of them. I will try your technique in our next meeting. Thank you so much for providing so so much values in your videos!

    Your videos are quite useful, thank you for sharing! The trouble I face often times is either I second guess myself about what I want to communicate in a meeting or my thoughts are way ahead of what I am actually communicating. Because of the mismatch I sometimes find it difficult to speak coherently.
