@1:26:33, "I don't want Matt to have a stroke, so...." l wonder if Will remembers saying this and if he regrets subjecting Matt to years of these horrible articles.
McGriddle’s analogy to cars driving (I think that may be a classic libertarian talking point, which would be even more baffling, but not 100% sure about that one) is so braindead. Like, she acknowledges the side of that coin which is convenient to her… Yes, we could drive 10 miles an hour & it would be safer. And it’s not even true that people couldn’t necessarily get to work on time- you’d just have to leave for work absurdly early. In any case, that’s one side of that. We can’t just make endless sacrifices in the name of safety, because there are other considerations to balance against it… But she ignores the flip side of that, which is pretty obvious if you think about it for 10 seconds… We already DO limit our speed to 45, or 50, or 60, or 70, or whatever, depending on the roads you’re using to commute to work… We COULD just floor it & drive to work at 130… But, weird, it’s almost like there’s some reason we don’t do that (& in fact have legislated some kind of standard for what speeds are acceptable on what roads to prevent those of us who have very bad judgement from trying to do so & endangering everyone around them)… Because the argument actually goes in both directions- there are factors you have to balance on both sides in order to come to a decent conclusion. It’s not enough to JUST say “fuck safety” or “fuck being able to make it more than 10 miles in an hour under optimal traffic.” You actually have to take all our needs into consideration & balance them in some way. The way she is arguing, you’d think we have no speed limit & that she literally does drive 110 everywhere she goes, because guess what… You WOULD get to work sooner that way… Until the day you slam into another car, or run a red light & get T-boned, or fly off a highway overpass when the turn is too tight for that speed. But requiring people to turn off their brains & forget half the equation is the name of her entire ideological grift.
To add to your point, part of why we don't have everyone drive at 10 mph is because it would grind society to a halt, not simply because its boring. At 10 mph either people are spending 8 hours a day commutting or people simply only work in their neighborhood. That's such a massive disruption, I'm assuming the economic impact would be comparible to the covid lockdowns, which did lead to a spike in problems with drugs, alcohol, and mental health. There is probably some arguement that we should like speed limits from say 65 mph to 55 mph for saftey reasons, but like you said its a discussion about finding the optimal speed that balances the safety of driving with the need to get places in a reasonable amount of time. We aren't saying "fuck it who cares if some people die, I think driving fast if fun!"
To be honest YES failure is important to succeeding, but is out cut throat society with their razor edge economic survival that makes this almost impossible if you don’t have a small mound of capital to back you up. Megan McArdle has a strangle blind spot to this fact, and her economic privilege.
Reading a McArdle article is like eating a McGridle. You know this shouldn't exist. If you consume it, it will corrupt the system and spew out the asshole of the system.
2:03:43 Does she think that somehow, television and canned food are related directly? Does she think that everyone eats in front of the TV? Does she think no Italian food comes from cans?
There's an 8 hour Dreher compilation on Chapo's official channel, but I've been going through the podcasts from the beginning and they missed a couple of smaller bits
@FiveTiger Please reply here or email me at sammyzucker@me.com with the small bits that will missed and they will be included in the forthcoming Rod supercut
These are not fun, man. Usually the reading series are entertaining because the targets are clueless, deraganged goofballs. McArdle is too odious to enjoy.

This is because Megan McGriddle (do better) is a woman, and Bernie Bros are misogynists.

When McGriddle gives her opinion it reminds me of Ders from Workaholics.."My dad says"

Matt sounds like he's going to have a stroke when screaming at Megan.
