The show takes the fairy tale archetypes, especially the prince/princess, and thoroughly dissects them. The show is quite openly critical of things you'd see in Disney princesses movies, and rejects them.

it honestly is still absolutely revolutionary. there is no other anime quite like this. recent ones like the new gundam are clearly inspired by utena but utena just has this radical, explicitly feminist message and themes throughout all the work, and its so beautifully executed, that ive not seen anywhere else since. i think its the best anime of all time, certainly miles ahead of typical misogynist garbage like EVA (artistically impressive, but thematically predictable and it has some absolutely disgusting and unforgivable aspects)
