Anthy's gesture of busting open the water pipe floods the floor with rosewater, and in its reflection we see a glimpse of what a revolutionized world would look like. Anthy and Utena not as agents being manupulated by men, but as women who are the champions of their own destinies and who CHOOSE to be together. They dance together as fully actualized women--actualized not in spite of but because of their love for each other. This scene is really remarkably beautiful and--dare I say it--revolutionary.

    • @penguinstrain

Oh I thought the reflection was only their past selves, as Anthy is dressed like a princess, referencing her role as the rose bride. Guess your interpretation makes sense too

Also the way the water burst open after Anthy struck it... When i first watched it, i thought anthy was going to hurt utena (re: the anime), but instead she destroyed something orderly that contains water... and it bursts in such high, overflowing speed. In the movie, Anthy is always taking initiative, so this reads to me as Anthy destroying the restrains holding her feelings together, and letting her feelings actually overflow and flood the both of them, separating her and Utena from the world under the two of them. Anthy's feelings being allowed to burst out and overflow gives the two of them a moment of peace where the only thing that exists is the two of them, and their feelings for one another. No abuser, no man, no rules control them. They dance freely, filled with joy, without anything intervening. Literally everything else is under their feet, they've ascended high into the stars.
Literally the most romantic scene I have ever watched in my whole life, and I always seem to come back to watch it no matter how much time passes. Few years passed and it still makes me heart beat. God I adore it.
Edit: oh and may I add, Anthy's feelings and freedom are literally washing away a certain someone symbolized by flowers than am not gonna mention because spoilers

This scene is the closest I've ever seen something properly visualize what love is, or at least how I feel about it.
Tending the rose garden was Anthy's entire purpose in life, and she ruined it for one beautiful moment for someone she truly cared for. To make her happy. It was raining down water and roses on the people below, but she doesn't care. This moment is between only the two of them and nothing else in the entire world matters.
(ofc I know it's deeply symbolic in other ways too but this is one way that really touched me)

When Anthy strikes the pipe she is doing two things, first is not betraying Utena's trust on her after she allowed herself to be totally vulnerable and honest with her she does not attack her when Anthy could have struck her at any moment with her childish dreams, Touga's death or with that axe and by doing so water, which is often a reflection of acceptance on the movie, takes over the roses the symbol of the prince, the childhood ideals, and on that instant we see both of them connect free from the ideal of the prince, we see them trying to connect with eachother as Anthy fulfills Utena's dream to see the stars even if it is not the same as Touga promised her.

Utena and Anthy are perhaps my favorite lesbian couple in Japanese Animation.
The way they meet, how Utena feels about Anthy both in the series as well as in the movie.
And how Anthy was originally easy to be taken and obedient only to have herself make her own choices in the end of the movie to break out of the school and life her own life the way she wanted.
Even though many of the themes may be up to interpretation, I feel that there is more to Anthy than most would see the first time they watch the Revolutionary Girl Utena series.
Even my niece enjoys the series out of the few episodes I have shown her though I may not be able to show her most of the series until she gets older.
But this scene here, when they are dancing together. Is really beautiful.

Levi The Hedgehog Well in the 3rd arc, the one that is all about the End of the World, there are a few suggestive scenes where the guys are on the car driving with their shirts half off as well as Utena and Anthy when they are about to go to bed separately they both lean back that is also a bit suggestive. Also there are some mature themes in the 3rd story arc that I will save until she gets into her teenage years where she can understand a bit more.
Mostly ok series to show her like Sailor Moon is, just a few scenes that might have her wait until I get the approval of my sister considering she decides what I could show her.

There’s something about this movie that a lot of people don’t know:
It may be a retelling of the anime, but it also takes place after the anime itself, in an alternate universe that exists alongside the original one. If you remember what happened at the end of the anime, utena disappeared and anthy left to find her. Utena ended up in a reality prison that exists in the alternate universe, where she experiences a repeat of her entire life, hence why the movie tells the same story as the anime. It took anthy years to find this place. By this time, her personality has changed somewhat.

Many things have been said about this scene. It’s otherworldly in its beauty, concept, execution, etc… Honesty, I’m in awe that no wedding has tried to replicate this (even with in reason in reality) Yet, after finishing the series years ago and coming back to the movie, I think this is the moment that I understood this as not a sequel or retelling of the story but a reimagining of an event Utena and Anthy that they never got to share together because of the ending of the series. Something about us and them seeing their reflection in the water makes me believe they remember everything and want to do things the way they want to this time around.

    2. Trying to generalize Utena and Anthy's relationship as "bs" because it's not "true yuri" is pretty lame of you. One of the main points of Utena is that perfect fairytales and fairytale relationships don't exist, you just find whoever truly makes you happy. That's why Utena's boy outfit and their reflections of their "true selves" in the water are showing that they're both trying to be something that they're not. Red roses falling = abandonment of childish fantasies and acceptance of adulthood

Here's my take on this: The roses represent the concept of a prince. Their dancing makes the roses fall off from the platform, which represents their love overcoming the patriarchy. Their reflections in the water represent their true selves. The reflections switch places with them only after the roses all fall away

    • @penguinstrain

Idk, at the end roses are what destroy the castle and probably ohtori itself. Although the roses did come from akio’s body

Even though the movie tells the same story as the anime and the manga, it actually takes place after the anime itself (a lot of people don’t know that). If you remember what happened at the end of the anime, utena disappeared and anthy set off to find her. The movie takes place within a reality prison where utena disappeared, where she relives her entire life there. It took anthy years to find it. By this time, her personality has changed. After managing to place herself in this reality prison, she secretly helps utena escape.

i like this theory, but what would explain some of the other stuff (like for example touga and akio being dead, nanami straight up not existing)? i think this theory is much better then the ones i hear about the movie simply being an alternate universe but that point is what confuses me.

    • @jaylenhioe2868
      @jaylenhioe2868 2 роки тому

anarchy the alternate universe is the reality prison that utena disappeared to
