  • It looks as though Lufthansa may be quietly downsizing its Airbus A380 plans for next summer. The airline had previously said that it would withdraw four to five of the giants from storage, but in early December a Lufthansa spokesperson told Simple Flying that the current plan is to quote “reactivate at least three A380s to be ready for operation early next summer”. Let’s look at this change of plans in today’s video…

If Lufthansa can reactive 5 A380s, that would be great! But 3 is a good starting point. I am unsure if they are going to stick with 3, or add 2 more.

I think, it depends strongly on the booking numbers in premium classes for the summer season. The economic downturn in Germany (inflation, high energy prices) will certainly affect the airlinebusiness.

I think they are revising the numbers returned exactly for that reason. We had this huge surge in travel post covid from pent up demand, but now the new economic realities will start kicking in.

With his 6 A380s are going back to Airbus by the end of this year, I think Lufthansa can still make it to reactivate 8 A380s but Mr Spohr decision to reactivate at least 3 A380s by early summer of 2023 is good enough.

Either way, LH is definitely retaining the A380 longer then expected. 3 makes a good entry level mix for the summer, but mid 23 could see international bookings and flights skyrocket, and several A380s are known to tackle this problem. I’d say quickly return the 3 and stay vigilant for a change in demand for 2023. ie. 5 or 6 A380s.

Given the economic uncertanty and incredibly restrictive "Covid Zero" policy in China, I doubt Beijing & Hong Kong would be destinations in the foreseeable future. So activating 3 for the LAX route would be right.

Yeah… I noticed LH has quite a mix of two engine, four engine and double deckers in its international fleet. Like how they use quad jets, gives a retro touch to a Modern airline.

@@0ne-6right40 That's mostly because LH has a policy of keeping it's widebody aircraft till 25 years. They would get rid of all the quads tomorrow if they could but have to wait for new deliveries and manage capital spend.

Nope. There will be even more A340-600s returning. The A346 fleet will consist of 10 aircraft by summer 2023 compared to 5 this summer.
And unlike others say, the A380 will not fill the 779 gap, the A340-600 will.
Once 777-9 are delivered, A340-600 will be replaced with the 789 on the other hand replacing A343 and A333 in Frankfurt.
      Long story short:
A380 is fully back, A346 filling the 779 gap, will be replaced by 779, 744 is in the same situation like the A346. A333 and A343 in FRA will be replaced by 789, ex PAL A359 MUC will be replaced by brand new A359 and the brand new A359 will also replace the A346 in some way as the A346 base is MUC and the 779 will be based at FRA.
Fleet in long term, just like you can take from Lufthansa official documents:
A359, A388, B748, B779 and B789. Airbusses based at Munich, Boeings based at Frankfurt.

Perhaps Lufthansa are being cautious starting with perhaps 4 then increasing the number over the next 12 months as we enter the 2024 season, it seems as though BA have been operating their 380s reasonably successfully, Lufthansa perhaps could start Frankfurt operations to JFK late 2023. I hope Lufthansa will be successful with the 380, they are far to young to be grounded forever.

    • @_daxre

Lufthansa will not start Frankfurt to JFK with the A380 as all A380s will be based in Munich. Further LH A380 operations at Frankfurt have been ruled out right by the start of the fleet´s grounding.

LH only has 8 380s left. 6 were sold back to Airbus, probably part of other deals with the 350 and 320NEO series. I'm not sure how much sense it really makes to bring back such a small number. Is it really with the expense of reactivation and added complexity? Also extremely outdated interiors by this point in the premium cabins.
