    Wheel of Time Review of Series 2 episode 3, where Nynaeve goes through some rings that don't make any sense. Rand spends months getting to a man only to decide, I don't want to talk to you anymore. Perrin loses a friend because he couldn't be bothered to say 6 words. And Matt escapes a cell he should never have been in, only to forget about Min. Which is understandable, because it's nothing like Min. So in a show that's nothing like the books, we should probably not be too surprised, this is nothing like the books. But what did you think of what you saw? Let me know your thoughts down below and as always, thanks for watching :)

      On the evidence of your reviews (and Shad's) I ordered the compete book set. Needless to say that I was NOT disappointed. I'm already 1/3 of the way through the series and completely hooked. I wish that Amazon had made a series that was faithful to the books but sadly this is the way of things these days. Hopefully once the 'current thing' craze has passed perhaps some studio interested in making good quality entertainment will pick up the baton and grant us fans a faithful adaptation.

      I'm begining to want to see the cast spontaneously break out into the Alice Cooper song Only Women Bleed.

      The USA didn't borrow or squat on these lands - we won each one fairly by voluntary annexation, or by Right of Conquest, of the rules of the age. To say less is both ignorant of history and diminishing of 18th and 19th century US military might.

    Omg these people in Hollywood are the worst. Robert Jordan would never have allowed someone to do this to his work. He freaking had another writer complete his story to ensure the fans got an ending. I hope future authors still alive ensure there work cannot be twisted and defiled like this. Its infuriating i will never watch season two or any future ones after watching these reviews and having watched season one.

    Remember when the Aes Sedai were about discipline and self control? The whole point of the arches is to test discipline by making to novice choose between their wants and the mission objective. Now the arches is basically a hazing designed to torture without purpose. Alanna has shown she lacks the self control to even lock the door before her threesomes, (also bangs her warders while on a mission to escort a dangerous male channeler). The Aes Sedai are meant to carry respect and authority, but the women depicted in this show have the emotional maturity of a teenager. I have a friend who was massively into Wheel of Time, when we were teenagers he was reading the books and all he could do was talk about them. I'd never read them, my brother had and loved them and so I enjoyed listening to my friend talk about the world. It was fascinating.
    He is now your standard consumer. He tried justifying how in season one they claim that women can be the dragon reborn. He is enjoying this show, but I know he is viewing it through rose tinted glasses.
    You cannot deviate so far from the lore of a world and still use the same name. Amazons Wheel of Time is not Robert Jordans Wheel of Time.
    How can Amazon, what started out as an online book store, be so bad at adapting fantasy novels? I would assume Bezos to have read LoTR and WoT and yet he gives us literary tripe.

    • @booshmcfadden7638
      @booshmcfadden7638 11 місяців тому +8

      He can enjoy it, but he can't claim it is The Wheel of Time. Anyone who believes this is an adaptation of the books hates the books. There's no middle ground or justification or reasoning. Even ignoring the ridiculous divergence from the novels, the show is objectively bad. The acting ranges from flat to hammy, the magic system in season 1 doesn't make sense, the dialog is rushed, the show spends HOURS on characters who have absolutely nothing to do with the plot or moving the plot forward, and the costuming is extremely generic.
      I'm sorry your friend lost his mind. That's unfortunate.

    Book Spoilers: Jordan uses Moiraine sparingly in the Great Hunt. Every time he uses her, though, it is important to the story. It advances plot or characterization. In the books, there is a beautifully theatrical scene of Moiraine and Liandron in Fal Dara. Moraine is being polite and making friends with everyone. She is extending her eyes and ears. Liandron is being condescending (because Liandron is stupid.) Later on, Liandron attempts to use the One Power to torture information out of Rand. Moiraine walks in, and Liandron tries (badly) to make it look like she was just questioning him. Moiraine finds Mat wounded and the dagger stolen. Liandron tries to take Mat. And Moiraine lets the silk over iron fall. She lets Liandron what she thinks about her, the Red Ajah, and lets her know that Mat is under her protection. Jordan does this with just a couple quick lines. Moiraine returns to acting like herself right afterward. Moiraine sends Mat to hunt Pedan Fain and the dagger, because he is the only one who can safely touch it. Moiraine, knowing that she is in danger if she stays in the White Tower, leaves with Lan in a mission to find information on the Forsaken in general and Lanfear in specific. A mission that gives her proof that the Black Ajah exists and is actively helping the Dark One. Moiraine's chapters are important to the plot of the Great Hunt and to the Wheel of Time series as a whole. I don't know if Rafe is just as dumb as Liandron and doesn't understand Moiraine has an important role in the story or if he just actively hates the books and created a completely different Moriaine.

      @@deathsdoor07Usually the complaint is that they are too long. If you have read books like “Dune” or “The Name of the Wind,” and enjoyed them, then you will probably like these. After book 6 some folks think there is a “slog” between 7-9/10, but honesty I just think the plot started to require multiple books to wrap up plot points, when before it could be done in a single book. Robert Jordan did a great job giving instructions on the last books, wrote the very important parts he wanted to do himself, and Sanderson did a great job filling in the blanks. The payoffs you get upon completing the series imo are totally worth it. Best of luck and happy reading!

    There are times where I'm sad I know some of my favourite stories will never see a multi-million adaptation until I watch adaptations like this and end being thankful for that fact. What is wrong with these writers not understanding that fantasy worldbuilding is often constructed in a way that certain plot points/characters and their arcs within them are often hugely important for future events. It's not that an adaptation can't remove certain plot points or other things but you have to be so careful with it. It's like being a surgeon you have to be precise with what you cut as one wrong cut and you might just end up with a corpse for a patient.

    Logain was able to see a glow around Rand, I think it was meant to be a gift... my best guess is, he could see Ta'veren (a power Nicola? displays much later on). When he talks about the event he speaks about knowing that Rand would cast the world into chaos, far more than he had. That was why he was laughing as they dragged him in to face Elayne's mother Morgase (in book 1).
    I do disagree that nynaeve (from the books) is a 'irrelevant character', though she is certainly damn annoying at times. The problem is the show is trying to make her relevant about three or four books too early. It cannot allow her the time to grow organically and learn from her mistakes. It isn't just her power that is required, it is her connection to Rand, and ultimately her having faith in him sufficient to reject the Aes Sedai dogma. Aging up all the character's has had so many brutal implications, along with stealing every significant moment from the main trio... at this point the only reason for anyone to watch it is to point and laugh.

      @@multitimmytiger2 The problem is, these books are ~30 years old now, so the 'irrelevant' aspects were fixed in the later novels, sic. Especially since the Ending cemented off a lot of plot ambiguity and dead ends, dropped ideas and forgotten threads.
      I can guess that they decided to make Nynaeve and Egwene Ta'Veren because it was more equal.
      This does not make the story better. It makes it much, much worse to make Nynaeve, the "Ugly" Braid-Tugging Mary Sue character... Tied to the core of the story. This means that Nynaeve ... IS more important to events than ANY OTHER CHARACTER at this point, because she does not have a pre-destined role to fulfill. i.e. Until there's something for her to do, she cannot be stopped. Mostly because she does not yet have a persona granted from the Pattern / Wheel itself. Once she has an imprint ... maybe she will be less of a Mary Sue. But until then, she's insufferable and unlikely to face consequences or repercussions.
      Because, shit writing. This is why the "Upgraded" Wonder Girl Team is bankrupt, i.e. until she has a Ta'Veren imprint from the past, she's irrelevant. Her actions will bend towards what the story needs to happen, not because she understands or wants things to happen.
      Being Ta'Veren isn't a good thing. It removes agency, and it creates knowledge gaps/writing problems, i.e. Whose knowledge/Experience will they inherit. Perrin inherits an entirely different set of genes when he becomes a wolf-brother, Matt becomes a General, Rand becomes the Mad Dragon Lews Therin Telamon, the man who broke the world by using balefire, erasing mountains and cities from the map as he went mad.
      You can argue that it was always going to happen ... but that's Fate Magic. The Pattern needs someone to exist, so that the result is the same. This is a very time-travel oriented situation, i.e. It's probable that Egwene will become a former Amyrlin, but it's probably better for the story if Egwene inherits the 'redeemed' forsaken's knowledge of the era, in order to solve the problems of creating the seals and creating Magic Tools / Sa'Angreal and Quendilar, by having the knowledge of the Forsaken of the past.
      Except, I think they'll pull a Rand Ex Machina and make her Persona , a female Aes Sedai/Witch/Wise One, sic. that created the Bore/Seal of the Dark One, and knows how to create the Binding Rod and other Ter'Angreal(s). i.e. to Save the Day.
      Because they can save a lot of story writing if they Make Egwene the Ultimate Mary Sue Sedai.
      The problems of the show tend to be magnified because they don't have the cast available. So instead of delaying or pre-filming scenes ... which would be normal in a show this complicated with 20-30 side characters, they decided to pair off characters to reduce the budget/co-ordination and consolidate characters into singular roles. A normal show would delay filming or film scenes in A/B/C location shoots so they could work in post-production, but I guess they filmed this during 2021/22 so ... they didn't plan ahead or delay the show. Which is telling.
      IMO, what they did to Elayne/Min/Aviendha and Rand, they are aliens. 30 to 40 year old teenagers. It's going to get worse when Faile shows up, or Tuon, et al, because they're also going to want to be Special. The Wonder Girl Army, instead of the Wonder Girls.
      It probably means Faile will turn into a 55 year old Scandinavian Fishwife, and Tuon will be a 400 pound angry black woman in her 40s, holding white slaves. Nynaeve and Rand are in their 30s Min, is late 30s, Aviendha/Elayne are late 20s, early 30s. By the time rand gets married... Min is going to be Rosamund Pike's age (sic) and the rest will be 30+.
      Because it seems like they wanted to balance the story with Girl Bosses, the Girls who are the Key to Everything ... but for that to happen, since RJ is dead, they felt like it could be changed up. All problems exist in this conversion, because of what it means to be Ta'veren. They are Plot Armor characters, based off heroes of the past. Except for Nynaeve/Egwene, who are they inheriting ? The combining of characters just resembles vomiting plot out at this point, instead of reconstitution.
      Nynaeve is kind of a consequence of that design/principle. Aging her up from ~24 to ... what is apparently 32, doesn't really work when Moiraine is ~40 ish. They also don't really articulate or show the ageless quality of the Aes Sedai.
      I guess that's a problem of the casting process, that they only have Californians to choose from (sic). I suppose if you don't think about it, Lan is ~42, Nynaeve is 35 instead of 25 ... the problem of the show really is, making Nynaeve an intolerable, aggressive, beligerent, narcissistic know-it-all... she has nowhere to improve. She is a Girl Boss, so her actions cannot be questioned.
      While I can understand that the casting creates significant book changes, the real issue is that the story doesn't work if you put the plot's heavy lifting on the girls. They aren't special enough. Their Plot armor is enough to keep them alive despite the Forsaken and the Darkfriends. While it's convenient in the beginning that Moiraine finds them through the spy network we never see ... (sic).
      To a degree, they are Ta'veren adjacent, because, like all Aes Sedai, they are pawns of Fate, the Wheel of Time puts them where they are needed, or where they have to be, and to some extent, they have to live despite that fate, or they die and the pattern changes to reinsert others in that path. That's the consequence of having the one power. And, it's supposed to be a lesson taught by the Arches, that their Past, Present and Future isn't theirs anymore. If they fight against Fate, if they pursue their interests and refute the order, they can become separated from the pattern. The purpose of the Arches was to create reliable Pawns to Fate, not to create a matriarchal Tyrrany, the Ebou Dar society writ large.
      That's the cost of using the power, i.e. it's Order Magic versus Chaos Magic.
      The fact that you can wield Saidin/Saidar also puts you into the path of Chaos and Order Magic, writ large, because the Divinity, the source of Magic in the WoT'verse is a God of Order. The Pattern is tied to creation and order, hence why Balefire is something profound but exploitative, i.e. magic that destroys time, space and creation, cannot exist in a magic system unless the system is purposefully built on top of something else, likely Void or Chaos or a primal energy. (which you later find out in the books is the True Power, which may or may not be fully understood, sic.)

    The visions in the Arches wasn't always intended to tempt people to stay there by being nice, they were designed to get the Novice to be engaged with the world they're presented, to accept it as their own -- for the good _and_ the bad -- because the bad can motivate them to try and change it, thereby adhering them more to that world, so they might not go back to their own.

In fact, Tolkien even hints through character conversations that a power outside of the world may have played a role in Bilbo’s luck there.
      Also, the Ring isn’t just jewelry but also a weapon. So it would be like finding a drug dealer’s dropped Nine that had been used in a dozen shootings. Would you seek to return it or take it to authorities to be destroyed?

      If they had followed the books, there was some question as to who the Dragon was (though it was obviously Rand to the reader), as Rand, Mat and Perrin were born very close together. They are also ta'veren themselves which indicates an importance to events possibly in confluence with the Dragon. Min's visions eventually show them to be vital to Rand's success somehow. Given the constraints necessitated by an adaptation, the story should heavily focus on the three of them, with the primary three women, Moiraine and Lan and cut out a great deal of the secondary content. I don't know exactly what the proper balance should be, but I'm not a writer. I do know that simply rewriting the story to downplay the men and build up the women was a terrible idea. Diversifying a remote backwater was also asinine. I only watched the first ten minutes of episode one, but the feel of everything was so off, I knew it was going to be terrible.

    However, I have to say, the whole "unless it comes twice" thing about "the way back will appear only once" did actually happen in the books, however, it happened for Egwene much later in the series. Which, again, was a bastardization of the series as there was a *reason* for it coming twice at that point.

    This plays like a fan fiction. But you know... One where the author clearly didn't understand what happened, why, moral lessons, characters' motivations, or things like setting... plot...
    I don't necessarily think the person should be fired, but a metaphorical smack upside the head, and some tutoring is clearly necessary. Because it's like it has all of the thought and artistic vision of an 8 year old (and that's me being favourable).

    I love your "rands". But regarding the scene where Logain sees Rands aura, you're wrong. That is exactly from the books. Logain does not see him channeling or him being a user of the one power in that scene. He can see that he is ta'veren. And he does so exactly like it is described in the books, as a light that is glowing around Rand. That is his special ability. Siuan Sanche has this ability, too, for example.

    Book spoilers: I just re-read this scene. Gate One: Nynaeve walks into a past life and fights a Forsaken with the One Power. Discovery: Nynaeve realizes just how powerful the enemies are, and she is going to be have to become an Aes Sedai to fight them. Temptation: Nynaeve discovers that the Forsaken are not sealed properly. Decision: Nynaeve goes back to the White Tower to learn how to properly seal the Forsaken permanently even though it means that they might escape in the short term. It's important to remember that short sightedness, overconfidence, and single mindedness are Nynaeve's weaknesses. She had to think more than one step ahead. That scene feels like it was made to be dramatized. Rafe's choice undermines not only the message but Nynaeve's character.

    When I read the books I always pictured Nynaeve as looking like Christina Ricci and the WOT CCG artwork reinforced that image. To see her being played by that actress they chose really annoys me.

      I honestly don’t mind any of the castings. Except for Perrin, Aviendha, and Min. Perrin and Aviendha because how they look is narratively important, and the showrunner just doesn’t care. And Min because she honestly looks 20 years too old.

      I think that casting is one of the most annoying ones, tbh. Just because they obviously didn't cast her for her acting ability. And she doesn't look or even seem like the character either...so why *did* they cast her?

    • @TheSuperappelflap
      @TheSuperappelflap 11 місяців тому +2

      the only character that might be cast semi decently is Mat, but i cant tell because he hasnt really done anything yet.
      all the others including Rand look confused all the time.
      which tbh i probably would be as well if i was them.

    One thing that pisses me off is the "locked and loaded" stance archers in TV make. Anyone who has drawn a bow knows how idiotic it is to hold it for a long period when there is no target. Nock the arrow and wait. Doesn't take long to draw and release.

    • @garylancaster8612
      @garylancaster8612 11 місяців тому +1

      Me too. Drives me mad. The orcs do it in the LotR films too. It's like the filmmakers think that archers are like musketeers who level the piece and fire a volley to order. As you say an archer draws and looses in one movement, especially one drawing a heavy war bow. I also get annoyed when people talk about firing a bow, you loose an arrow or shoot a bow

    Tf is happening with Rand lol He works at an asylum and now he's a lord all of a sudden? 😂 In the books he got mistaken for a lord in Shienar because of his name A'l which is a title. Then Moiraine gave him fancy clothes and threw away all his old clothes... he stays at an Inn Cairhien and gets mistaken for playing the game of houses when he lied and would not tell anyone who and what he was really doing there. In fact he was just waiting for the others to show up in Cairhien too. He got invitation from Nobles who thought he was someone so important.

    Men cannot see when another man can channel, but it is possible that Logain does not realize this. He has a talent to see Ta'veren, and might be confusing that glow with some sign of channeling. Of course, that would lead him to assume Matt and Perrin are also powerful channelers.

    What they did here does not make sense... in the book Nynaeve was so strong in the one power they didn't want to let her wander off so they immediately made her accepted. Here they made her do nothing for weeks then decide to make her accepted... after what? After she got bored out of her mind doing nothing but chores? 😅 It makes sense to make her accepted immediately and have her do some real training since they didn't want her running away...

    • @waylander9265
      @waylander9265 11 місяців тому +1

      It was also because she was too old to be a novice by Aes Sedai custom, so making her Accepted immediately was an easy bypass to that problem. All of this is a really efficient way to highlight how much the Aes Sedai valued Nynaeve, rather than the constant sitting around talking

    I agree with the show that Borderlanders wouldn't be able to swear false oaths. And the Seanchan damane are weak with Earth, so "roiling the entire ground" is not something they could do. Only Egwene could do that, which is why Egwene is such a valuable damane.
    But well done spotting that men who can channel don't glow in the books. I missed that part when I watched the scene.
