Thank you for not hiding this gorgeous woodpecker from us! A master of your level can turn a mistake (you're right, I'd never know those were mistakes) into something unexpectedly beautiful nevertheless, and there's a lesson in that alone.
Mistakes are just new learning opportunities. It's encouraging for newer artists to see experts making mistakes. Otherwise we end up believing their paintings come out perfect the first time around. Thank you so much for sharing this.
My mistakes and failures are definitely worse and now I say “ oh what lovely bookmarks….” As I cut them up or of course use the back for tests. Steve Mitchell once quoted something like “ Be ready to be a beginner everyday” ( can’t remember the original author)and I repeat that quite often. Watercolors are addicting and challenging, maybe that’s why they are so much fun.. thank you for sharing and reminding us not to be so hard on ourselves.
Adorable woodpecker. It is comforting to know that every painting you do doesn't always work out, however, like the blind hanger, I thought it was beautiful and wouldn't have thought there were "mistakes". "I'll do better next time" is a great way to deal with disappointment.
Now I really want to see all the paintings in your cupboard you consider failed. I bet they're still a thousand times better and nicer than mine 🥰 I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd love to see a "full length failed paintings video" now...!
Lol- thanks BV. I usually use the back of them to try out colours or sometimes I'll even do a quick study on the back and then I throw them when I've use both sides of the paper.
@@LouiseDeMasi How about the compromise of just shortly showing us these paintings before cutting them up/using the back? Maybe a whole video on all the "failures" would be too big of a challenge, but I could also spontaneously envision just 1-2 minutes of footage included in your normal videos like once a month or so that give a short rundown on what exactly you think you failed in the specific painting(s). I really don't want to overly challenge any anxiety or shame, but we all know you're a gorgeous painter (and teacher), and (*I* think) it's really encouraging for us learners to be regularly reminded of and see how a good artist "fails" too, and being made aware of errors/bad choices really teaches so much too (maybe even things that wouldn't be very obvious/mentioned in a "successful" painting/lesson). Maybe you're up for considering it to become a more regular thing - it's great to have you as a teacher either way of course 🙂
As mentioned by several, we are our own worst critics. I would like to think it’s because we’re always striving to improve and to learn more. I feel very fortunate to have found you on patreon, I have learned so much, you are a ….beyond….fantastic teacher and artist!! Your passion and love for watercolor painting has become mine as well….a wonderfully contagious and most enjoyable passion. Thank you Louise, you are just the sweetest lady and your bloopers are the best! I always get a chuckle.
You were quite right in the comment that you made stating if you hadn’t pointed the mistakes out to us, that we wouldn’t have known. I thought the bird was amazing & after your documentary had finished, I thought that you had fixed all your mistakes & that was the lesson here. I love how you tell us exactly when you wet the paper & paint,or paint on dry paper. Also why you are doing wet on wet, or wet on dry & the results thereof & sometime the results you would get if you did it differently. I hang on your every word & your tutorials are incredible, packed with information & the final result outstanding. I am binge watching all of your work & loving every minute. Cheers 😊😘💕❤️🥰😍
Lov your teaching about your mistakes along the way… it was extremely helpful to learn how to fix areas & how u did it… also how you “turn a failed painting over & use the back.” Brilliant as Arches paper is expensive & love to get a better result on same paper… excellent lesson. Oh & lov your bloopers at the end… the best part of your lessons… 😋
"...do better next time".... Good grief Louise - that painting is completely Gorgeous! You painted the little woodpecker Beautifully! Thank you for sharing. Mel in Devon, UK 🍰🌻
Thank you Louise for your honesty. I can be so hard on myself when I do not come up to my own high standards. You reminded me to cut myself some slack. 👊
Thank you so much for sharing this. I have literally cried at some of my mistakes that hardly seemed to matter later. It’s wonderful to know that we are never alone. ❤
Glad it was helpful! Don't worry I have too. A failed painting will leave me feeling disappointed for a day or two. We all have failures - more often than not.
Louise, thanks for sharing this with us. It’s helpful to see how you went through the process, and that watercolor painting is not perfect. Watercolor is so alive. You helped me see; there are solutions, to not give up, and that paintings can turn out well even if they aren’t the exact way I intended. Beautiful painting. 🥰
Louise, you are the most inspiring artist ... your art is beautiful and your spirit and positivity are even more beautiful. Thank you for the videos you share with us. ❤
Thank you for sharing your experience. Good to know, as you are a fabulous artist. Wonderful to hear that the maintenance guy expressed his delight in your painting, sometimes we do need encouragement when we have been too hard on ourselves.
Greetings from the Philippines! Thank you so much for showing your mistakes in this video. Makes me feel better to know that it is ok if things don't go your way.
Thank you for this video. I learned a lot by you explaining the mistakes. I also learned that I don’t have to be perfect every time and that, we learn by making mistakes!!!
I watched your video on blending recently and this video really shows your blending techniques in action. A really good takeaway was not to bring paint out to the edge of a wetted area to avoid accumulation of paint on the edge. Thank you
I love him! I am so grateful for that man, it is a beautiful painting. If you didnt do those "mistakes" and "fussing", it will be looking different. ❤ its really beautiful
Good morning beautiful. I have woodpeckers here in Florida but not today. We were crushed by the manipulated hurricane. I love to see and hear you as it gives me good vibrations. You are the sweetest lady.
Thank you Louise, it’s so refreshing to see that things don’t always go to plan for others. When you’re trying to learn and you make lots of mistakes you think your the only one and it can give you confidence quiet a beating. Your Woodpecker is lovely. ❤️
This video was just what I needed today. I was about to ditch my 5th attempt at a painting because it's still not perfect. Now I'll just go ahead and finish it. Thanks for letting us know even professionals sometimes have problems.
That's invaluable that you share with us experiencing mistakes❤ How many people drop painting because it seems that they'll never achieve what they think will look perfect or they won't see on paper what they had in their mind? I would start and drop watercolor many times because of this reason. It has only been few months since I've realized that the best way to learn is to accept your mistakes and treat them as a chance to develop my skills. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!
Thank you for publishing this video. It’s disappointing to have a failed painting and good to know I’m not alone. Seeing creative ways to fix something is really helpful too and just as valuable as the original painting lesson. Love the painting and love how the branch turned out. Thank you for this.
Thank you Louise very encouraging. I thought this philosophy could transfer to the mistakes we make in life. We don't get things right all the time but with a little care and patients not to mention not beating up on ourselves mistakes can be amended with good results not mention our development in such learning curves x
I am just learning watercolor so when I follow a tutorial I have frequent mistakes but I strive to make something of it. I get lots of experience this say. And i do appreciate your encouragement
This is very encouraging especially for beginners and those of us (who, me?) who are too hard on ourselves. I have learned that mistakes are learning opportunities and it’s interesting to try and figure out how to fix them. And oftentimes, I end up loving the painting if I go back later to have another go at it. Thank you, Louise!
Beautifull painting, Louise and very inspiring to learn you made mistakes and fixes them as well! thanks for sharing 👏 I also have to tell you those colours in your blouse make you glow and I like to see people I admire looking good! colours are really your thing 🤩
Thanks once again, Louise. Your videos are always so educational and I love your easy speaking style. I looks forward every week to your next installment
I anxiously await each new video that you post. I find them to be a remarkable resource and inspiration for my own watercolor explorations. You are a fantastic teacher!!
A great lesson for all of us; thanks Louise. With almost every painting I do, I'm saying to myself: I've ruined it already, this will never work...Sometimes they end up looking pretty good. In the beginning, I ruefully referred to French Ultramarine as "forget about it blue." But as you say, I realize that I always learn something, mostly from the failures.
Thank you for this Louise as a beginner in watercolour I have thought of giving up often because of making a mistake and not being happy with my painting,, but now I know that it is just a learning experience and as you said you love this medium and would keep going. Your paintings are lovely . Looking forward to seeing it on Patreon. I have just painted your grapes and apple blossoms so now I will have to share them mistakes and all 😀❤️
Dear Louise, Gorgeous top. Thank goodness for the blinds installer. Suggestion: Raise the camera to your eye level to deemphasize your chin / neck area. Thank you for your videos ❤
Dear Louise, I so glad you make mistakes too hahha…just like a normal person 😂…I have a question, what transferpaper do you use? Do you print it out on the transferpaper? Can you tell a little bit more about the absolute beginning before painting please?
Thank you for not hiding this gorgeous woodpecker from us! A master of your level can turn a mistake (you're right, I'd never know those were mistakes) into something unexpectedly beautiful nevertheless, and there's a lesson in that alone.

Well said! Thank you Renee.

thank you for sharing your mistakes. I think the woodpecker looks fantastic myself, but then we're all our worst critics a lot of the time.
Very true! Thank you Sonya.

I would be overjoyed if I could paint that! I beat myself up on every painting and see nothing but my mistakes. Thanks for the video
Thank you Louise for your honesty. I can be so hard on myself when I do not come up to my own high standards. You reminded me to cut myself some slack. 👊
My pleasure Amanda. Thank you.

So true! Thanks Patti.
I really appreciated how to make changes after the fact when thing don't go according to plan. This will really help me how to tackle changes!
You art my favorite UA-cam artist! You have taught me so much!

Glad it was helpful! It's not often they do go exactly how I had planned it.
Happy accidents! I love the reflected/Incorporated color in the branch. It helps bring light and life. Love this painting. 😊

Thanks Sue.

Dear Louise, Gorgeous top. Thank goodness for the blinds installer. Suggestion: Raise the camera to your eye level to deemphasize your chin / neck area. Thank you for your videos ❤
Thanks Louise for sharing - the woodpecker still looked amazing. What would you have done if you did it “correctly” the first time?
hello Louise, can't find the link for those brushes you used? I enjoyed watching your "mistakes"😀Greetings from cold Switzerland!
Hermosooo.
I cannot see what was wrong with it Louise. Going to watch it now
Thanks Jean.
Dear Louise, I so glad you make mistakes too hahha…just like a normal person 😂…I have a question, what transferpaper do you use? Do you print it out on the transferpaper? Can you tell a little bit more about the absolute beginning before painting please?
Sra Louise por favor habilite subtítulos en español. Admiro mucho su trabajo, me Ayudaría mucho la traducción al español. Gracias. Abrazos. MAGDA
I'd be interested to know your drawing technique.
