At the age of 58, this song breaks my heart - because i relate too much to the message.. and it encourages me to stop and be here now and seek my peace - my own significance. I only hope i don't grow old having regrets for not living in the present and seeing the gifts around me. Thank you, Colin, for the reminder and the inspiration.
Colin is just another music genius. Lyrics, guitar work, and that voice! WOW! He can sing low, mid-range, and as high as he wants to. I’ve always loved his unique voice even back with Men at Work!
Our son, Peter, died in Aug 2019 aged 34, of complications following cancer. This song reminds me of everything he was and could have been. I miss him.
“Just be here now, forget about the past…. Your mask is wearing thin” Boy, did I need this reminder today. Beautiful song and message. Thank you good Sir.
This songs signifies to my wife and I that we kinda saved each other and that what art is... you put your own meaning in where you can. we live on the ocean and i play this to her once in a while. this man is an artist once an for all
At the age of 31 life has blessed me towards this man's music. This song is absolutely incredible. Much love to all who read this... Just be here now, forget about the past, the mask is wearing thin
I had my heyday and at 58 I’m now reinventing myself. I don’t know who I am now or what I want to be, but I resonate with this song about as much as any song I’ve ever heard. And there’s a lot I’ve heard over the past 58 years. I hope to pick up the pieces of my life and find my passion again so that I can live out the rest of my life being able to contribute to my community as well as live a life worth living for myself as well.
Your comment really resonated with me. I'm almost 56 and nothing really feels right anymore. I just need courage to change it. Praying for you and all of us 🙏🏼❤️
I cant get enough of this song. Colin’s another under-rated singer and guitarist. I love his voice. He dont get enough credit. He’s 68 yrs old and sings as good or better than when he was with men at work. Actually, I like him better solo…
You were very fortunate. I am not a big fan of 80’ms music, but now I am a HUGE fan of Collin What a great songwriter and acoustic performer. I love it when stripped down versions of songs actually are better than studio versions. He’s fantastic.
dont know if anyone gives a damn but if you are stoned like me during the covid times you can stream pretty much all the new series on instaflixxer. I've been binge watching with my girlfriend for the last few weeks xD
And u know what...I think its better this way. Not that he would...but he should not be commercialized like those more well knowns do and get. They start showing up on tv singing shows and just the media machine that just takes the essence of singer song writers, tosses it aside and is just interested in the surface level BS. Songs like this, especially acoustic versions...are way too emotional to have on in the backround at work or on the drive to work...imo. though ed Sheeran and john Mayer were able to get there. The broad audience is fickle. I'll never truly understand what they like and why.
I obviously know him from land down under and who can it be now. But the song...and specifically the lines that really l caught my attention...were from Beautiful world. 1 made me chuckle...followed by one that is such an amazing line, I have no words. "I tried talking to Jesus, but he just put me on hold. Said he'd been swamped by calls this week. And He could not shake his cold." (That's funny. I like it. Followed by such movind lines) "And still this emptiness, persists. Perhaps this is as good as it gets." And....just give me the man, his guitar and his voice. No full band needed. It never dawned on me. Bands usually go... Singer? Got it. Bass? Got it. Guitar? Got it. Drums/percussion? Got it. Piano/keyboard? Got it. Soul? Nope. You get yourself some soul, you can drop a lot of that other stuff.
And I guess what's worse...is people think they have that soul. But they don't. And...even if you try to have it...it sometimes is just...u got it...or u dont.
Oh my God I love this performance. Colin Hays is a brilliant, genius musician, singer and songwriter. When I hear him play and sing, my heart is filled with joy.
My favourite Colin Hay song with 'I don't think I'll ever get over you'.... "I drink good coffee, every morning". Great story telling + great musicianship where just a single voice and guitar can rouse so much emotion. Guilty pleasure with this song, I can't help but repeat "machines!" in the same voice delivered by Morpheus (Lawrence Fishburne) when giving his speech to Zion. "And I'll check my machine (machines!)" 😅
This song moved me to tears today Colin. I only just discovered it on Spotify and wish I had found it years ago. I love it. Thank you. Sending love and peace from Salt Spring Island, Canada. PS I love Men At Work too 🙂
I just love Colin Hay so much. I don't care where he performs or where he gets his money from....He gives his whole soul to every performance, and it touches my heart...every time. He is ....in my top ten fav artists ever. THAT good!
This song could be interpreted so many ways. I see it as a man that is going through a hard time in his life, waiting for something better to happen. Or he is simply living a life he does not enjoy. However is he not actively doing anything to change his circumstances, all he is doing is waiting for a different life to start for him. Any minute now, my ship is coming in I'll keep checking the horizon I'll stand on the bow, feel the waves come crashing Come crashing down, down, down, on me --- I think this speaks to his desperation for his life to change. He thinks it is possible that it could happen soon and keeps waiting for it. He is not actively doing anything to change his cercumstances, he is just waiting "for his ship to come in"( as the saying goes). When it happens he's convinced he'll stand at the forefront and be able to handle all the hardships that will come his way. Makes it seem as if perhaps this current life is filled with hardships that he has trouble handling. Much like people that think their troubles will change so long as certain life situations change, such as having more money, changing jobs, moving, etc., but for the most part money doesn't solve deep rooted problems, a new job doesn't always change a dissatisfaction with a career path, etc And you say, be still my love Open up your heart Let the light shine in But don't you understand I already have a plan I'm waiting for my real life to begin --- I believe this is a wife, could be any person that cares about him though. They are telling him to look at what is good, that is what will help him. He is resistant and basically shrugs the advice off by saying he is not meant to live his current life and he just needs to wait for his real life to start. When I awoke today, suddenly nothing happened But in my dreams, I slew the dragon --- He is not actively attempting to change his life, he is just waiting for something to miraculously change for him. When he wakes up, everything is still the same as it was, yet he seems a bit surprised that nothing happened. In his dreams he is amazing and can do anything and is the hero slaying dragons. And down this beaten path, and up this cobbled lane I'm walking in my old footsteps, once again And you say, just be here now Forget about the past, your mask is wearing thin --- I think he could be walking in the footsteps of his younger days, when he was young and a different life seemed possible. Perhaps he is thinking through all the things he could have done. His wife tells him to stop living in the past and exist in the present. He could also be walking in the not so distant past where everything was less difficult. Maybe he had a great job and lost it and is now waiting for a great new job to come along. He is wearing a "mask", pretending everything is fine and will turn out great when this new life starts. His wife recognizes that the mask is wearing thin and he is not as able to hide his real feelings. Let me throw one more dice I know that I can win I'm waiting for my real life to begin ---- his response to his wife is reminiscent of a desperate gambler. He wants just one more chance before he quits. He cannot imagine that the odds are against him, he is certain that he can win. However, like a compulsive gambler, one more roll is not going to be enough. Any minute now, my ship is coming in I'll keep checking the horizon And I'll check my machine, there's sure to be that call It's gonna happen soon, soon, soon It's just that times are lean ----- he is still waiting, but even more desperate now. He is making excuses as to why it's not occurring and depreately attempting to convince himself that it will happen soon. If he is waiting for that new job, he is sure that there will be a call on the answering machine. If there is not a message on the machine he can just tell himself that times are tough and that's why it didn't happen yet. This song is very depressing. One can picture a man desperately attempting to change his life cercumstances almost in vain. His wife recognizes that he is sinking into depression waiting for this "real life" to start. She wants him to come back to the present and see what is good about life, but he just stares into the future, waiting for some miracle to happen and change his current circumstances
So good. Can't wait to see him live again on the west coast. But first I have to find the 12 people who gave this a thumbs down and punch them in the face. But after that, can't wait.
Any minute now, my ship is coming in I'll keep checking the horizon And I'll stand on the bow, and feel the waves come crashing Come crashing down, down, down on me And you say, be still my love Open up your heart, let the light shine in But don't you understand I already have a plan I'm waiting for my real life to begin When I awoke today, suddenly nothing happened But in my dreams, I slew the dragon And down this beaten path, up this cobbled lane I'm walking in my old footsteps, once again And you say, just be here now Forget about the past, your mask is wearing thin Just let me throw one more dice I know that I can win I'm waiting for my real life to begin Any minute now, my ship is coming in I'll keep checking the horizon And I'll check my machine, there's sure to be that call It's gonna happen soon, soon, oh, so very soon It's just that times are lean And you say, be still my love Open up your heart, let the light shine in Don't you understand Oh, I already have a plan I'm waiting for my real life to begin On a clear day, I can see, see for a long way On a clear day, I can see See for a long way Source: Musixmatch Songwriters: Colin James Hay / Thomas Mooney

Che bella canzone. Emozionante.
life jacket is for the tears i bawl out every time i hear this song
Any minute now, my ship is coming in
I'll keep checking the horizon
And I'll stand on the bow, and feel the waves come crashing
Come crashing down, down, down on me
And you say, be still my love
Open up your heart, let the light shine in
But don't you understand
I already have a plan
I'm waiting for my real life to begin
When I awoke today, suddenly nothing happened
But in my dreams, I slew the dragon
And down this beaten path, up this cobbled lane
I'm walking in my old footsteps, once again
And you say, just be here now
Forget about the past, your mask is wearing thin
Just let me throw one more dice
I know that I can win
I'm waiting for my real life to begin
Any minute now, my ship is coming in
I'll keep checking the horizon
And I'll check my machine, there's sure to be that call
It's gonna happen soon, soon, oh, so very soon
It's just that times are lean
And you say, be still my love
Open up your heart, let the light shine in
Don't you understand
Oh, I already have a plan
I'm waiting for my real life to begin
On a clear day, I can see, see for a long way
On a clear day, I can see
See for a long way
