This step by step tutorial will show you how to hem a lined, Sequined dress using just a sewing machine! You can do it! See all my videos at stephaniessewingstudio.com
This video was SO helpful, and I echo other comments saying how nice it was you shared your thought process with us. I am hemming a dress after watching this because it's given me the confidence to do so. You're a great teacher - thank you for sharing
I like how you share your thought process as you make your decisions. I learned a lot. I am hemmimmy grands prom dresses. I actually took my rotary cutting tools to cut the lining fabric. Used my ruler in short 3-4 inch sections making sure nothing else was in the way. That way I marked and cut as I went. It worked for me. Now on to sequined over lay. Thanks for your help.
Regarding the lining hem...easiest way to narrow hem is to stitch about 5/8" away from raw edge and then trim very close to that stitching. Then you can sit down and fold double as you hem using that thread line as your guide.
This was very helpful. I just got a call to shorten a prom dress with a sequin layer. I've never done one before. I was aft the sequins would come un done some how. Thanks
I see you are using one of my favorite old singers! Is that the 403? Still have mine too, one of the last good singers around except for the industrial machines! I had a bridal sewing business for 25 years and never had to do a sequined dress...now I have one to shorten for a young girl who is only 5' tall removing 7.5" of the hem ...beaded on a chiffon though, so will need to use fray check or fold under some of the bared chiffon...then rebead where needed I think Thanks for the tips though
😂I have to hem 8 inches on my daughter’s dress! Dress has a two or 3 inch stretchy band incorporated in the hem not sure if I should use it or just ditch it.
I charge more than $30 for this hem. I don't share my prices because they go up every couple of years. And, when I do share my prices, everybody comments and my posts blow up! :)
I love the video but why are there no answers to questions in comments😥 I also would like to know stitch length & needle type? Thanku great instruction just need details 😁
I apologize for not responding. I am so busy in my Studio, and technology is a learning process, but I am getting better. I used a strong needle, 90 or 100. I used a long stitch length because it didn't need to be tight, just held in place.
I only use a ball point needle when the stretch fabric goes up and down with the needle. The sequins is preventing that, so I just used a regular strong needle, 90 or 100.
I used a regular strong needle, 90 or 100. I did not use a stretch needle. A stretch needle is for fabric that stretches up and down as the needle goes up and down. Sequins prevents this from happening. But, honestly, it couldn't hurt!
Nice, my granddaughter is also short and I have to alter her sequins dress with a slit. And because she is short the slit is down further on her leg than she wants….hmmmm….thinking!!!!
Beads are terrible. You must remove the beads where you are going to make the alteration. If you are taking off 4", then remove a path of beads 4" up, then make the alteration. Sequins don't matter, just use a strong needle.
I don't know how to sew a hem on the good side of the dress, since you have to roll the hem with your hands. The stitches can look good on the bobin side if you adjust the tension of the thread.
This is true! And, honestly, I do it differently with different hems. With this dress, the sequins helped it to stay in place so it was not difficult to sew on the right side. If it was a slippery fabric, I would sew on the wrong side, keep the fabric in place, and make sure my tension looks good.
Thank you for the tutorial. // SHLM & HaB (peace & love). The Name of the Creator is Hayah asher Hayah, as what He told Moshah (Exodus 3:14), preserved in the Hebrew Scriptures. All followers of the Messiah are to do the 7 appointed times (Leviticus 23), but no more animal sacrifices, following the Crucifixion of the Messiah. We are now of the order of MLK TSDQ (King, righteous), to Whom ABRaHM tithed. Ask the Messiah to be your personal Savior. He said to him, I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me (John 14:6). All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of Hayah (Romans 3:23). The wages for sin is death but the gift of ALaHYM is Everlasting Life through Messiah Yahushgh our Master (Romans 6:23). That if you confess with your mouth the Master Yahushgh and believe in your heart that ALaHYM raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved (Romans 10:9). He Himself is an Atoning Offering for our sins, and not for ours only but also for all the world (1 John 2:2). The Messiah died on the cross, & Resurrected three days later (presenting Himself as First Fruits to the Father). Please ask Him to be your Savior. He is the ONLY way to Everlasting Life.
For the outside layer of the dress, I pin it all the way around. You are right, the hems are often uneven. For the lining layers, I do it the same all the way around because it doesn't need to be as perfect.
I love how you showed your 'thinking process'. It teaches us to not jump the gun and dive right in, but to think it all out. Thanks!

This is super smart, and I do this all the time. But, I have not done this on Sequins. I think the double fold might make the hem to stiff.
Thanks! I have a sequined prom dress to hem 4 inches off of. I was terrified. You showed me it's possible!
Love your authentic, open personality! Troubleshooting as you go along! I like your style of teaching!
I appreciate that!, Thank you so much!
Great job and I am glad to see that I am not the only one who runs into bobbin issues!❤️

Glad it was helpful!
Have you got a Singer 401a? I do and they will PRY IT OUT OF MY COLD DEAD HANDS!!!!! A girl after my own heart!! 🥰❤️
You are my cousin! I have a Singer 403A, and I love it so much! I stole it from my Mother. :)
I see you are using one of my favorite old singers! Is that the 403? Still have mine too, one of the last good singers around except for the industrial machines!

Sounds like you know what you are doing! I hope she loved it.
Also...love your background music!
Thank you! I am half hippie, and half folk.
You are everything!! this was super helpful, thank you!
this was very helpful doing my first one did not know you could cut it.
You can do anything!
I worked on a mother of the bride gown that was this exact fabric! What a little bugger that was!
You get it!
😂I have to hem 8 inches on my daughter’s dress! Dress has a two or 3 inch stretchy band incorporated in the hem not sure if I should use it or just ditch it.
I would ditch it. Too much trouble, not only will nobody be able to tell, but it won't make a different in the hem.
Thank you!
How much did you charge for that hemming job?
I'm doing a hem similar I charged $30.❤

Since the toole is stretch, do you use a ball point needle even though there are sequins (which a regular point would probably work best on?)
I only use a ball point needle when the stretch fabric goes up and down with the needle. The sequins is preventing that, so I just used a regular strong needle, 90 or 100.
Very informative! I've read that I should use a "stretch" needle. What type & size needle did you use?
I used a regular strong needle, 90 or 100. I did not use a stretch needle. A stretch needle is for fabric that stretches up and down as the needle goes up and down. Sequins prevents this from happening. But, honestly, it couldn't hurt!
Very good 😍😍😍😍

This is true! When I hem a dress with a split, I always ask the customer if they want to take the top of the slit up higher. Good thinking!
I’ve got a sequin plus beads! I would not be able to do this which I’ve done this alteration before. The beads and rhinestones makes it harder
Beads and rhinestones are super difficult. I charge a premium because the beads need to be removed before I sew.
I need to know how to shorten the dress with beads and sequins

What type of needle did you use on your sewing machine
I used a regular strong needle. 90 or 100.
sewing is problem solving !
Absolutely!

What's the size of the stitching before sewing?
I used a long stitch length, almost basting.

I don't cut the same amount off because most of the hems are so uneven, please tell me what u do in cases like this!
