I considered the v2 after owning a 899 for a few years, but felt that the upgrade wasnt that big, so i got a high spec 1299 for the same money as the new v2 and i dont regret it. Feels like a 899 on steroids. The V2 felt too much like the same bike i already had. And i prefer the looks of the 1299/899 over the v2
Excellent video again, very much amplified my own thoughts on wether I should upgrade my 959 to the V2. I decided not to as I love the 959, I used the money to buy a 2014 Speed Triple R which has proven to be an excellent decision.
What a day soaked, you are a properly hardcore motorcycle rider suffering for your art . Beautiful bikes love the deep red colour. Not really my cup of tea but both are stunning bikes . Thanks very informative.
I’ve just purchased my dream bike a 1299 and because of lockdown and weather i cannot get it out the garage, i’ve been watching all of your panigale videos to get my imaginary ‘riding’ fix until we can get out on the bikes again! Thanks!
Prefer the white decals. The single swing arm looks nicer. That is bad about the brake fluid reservoir clearance. Excellent, enjoyable and detailed content. Cheers.
Really interesting review, thanks. I Just hope this comparison doesn't bolster the 2nd hand values of the 899 as I'm planning to get one in the new year! On the subject of them having no fuel gauge, my 2015 Monster 1200 doesn't have one either but it has a trip meter and a low fuel warning light, so it gives you all the info you need. Mind you, I remember the reserve tap...
Never had a heat issue with my 899 but the V2 cooked my nuts. As a larger rider I found the V2 roomier and less wristy. Got to agree about looks though, prefer the 899.
I'm stunned at that Mike - to me both bikes are identical size wise (their dimensions are the same) and both bikes get super hot....but i can't argue with your perception!
TheMissendenFlyer Very odd. To me it felt like wider bars, better seat and lower pegs on the V2. I'd be interested in the comparative 'to floor' measurements.
Here in Germany where we are limited to stock exhaust systems the prices of 899,s are considerably higher than 959 and v2 cause of euro 3 and 108db. I would never trade in my 899 here. But a v2 with an akra exhaust would be my dream bike outside Germany .
Thank you for the great review. I bought an 899 around 2 months ago instead of the V2 due to money. Still yet to ride it as I'd suffered a broken neck, back, shoulder and leg, and also suffered a dislocated elbow in June just gone, so your videos are teasing me to what it'll ride like lol. The dealership was laughing when I bought it after rolling in, in a wheelchair haha.
Great review on both. As a rider I’ve put 50,000km on my old 749 and have to say 899! Brilliant comparisons detail on both bikes. I wouldn’t turn either one down for a spin. Perfect video on a wet evening at Level 3. Thanks Mr.Fly.
I agree. Don't think it's just the TMF channel tho. Lots of channels are getting ads about 3 second from the end too. Very odd. Definitely putting up with tho Andy!
I put up with them to support the channel (with the sound off on the long ones) but have just watched the latest 37 minute Panther Owners Club video of last years VMCC Banbury run (twice!) and not a single advert! Okay it has only had 154 views but if you are at all interested in old bikes I highly recommend this channel to you as something different 🇬🇧🏍
Great vid and comparison. I’ve owned an 899 for 3 1/2 years and love it. The Termis sound awesome and it’s just a great sports bike for the road and more than enough for me on track 4 times a year. I’ve been dithering all year about changing it for a V2. I’ve got to say in standard V2 guise it’s not worth spending anymore money to replace it. I hear a V2 Corse or SE could be on the cards by spring so if that looks something special I may be tempted otherwise my 899’s a deffo keeper! 👍
Great comparison! Thank you. A difficult decision between the two. I think if I’d already owned the 899 then I’d stick with it (especially with the mods you have done). 👍😎🇦🇺
The panigale v2 really does leave the panigale v4 rather exposed, to the point that ultimately the only reason you buy the v4 is bragging rights. It's got the panigale name, the looks, the tech and has way more than enough power to satisfy anyone's speed fix on road or track. Considerably more power than ducatis former superbike flagships like the 998 and 999. You really would have to go some to convince yourself to spend the extra for the v4.
gonads roasting on an open road.....Glad yours got the good weather. Beautiful bikes regardless. No point changing yours, but we knew that before the vid started.
Great video thanks, at some point in the future need to test ride both myself but going on your assessment a cheaper 2nd hand 899 with add ons already done like the Termi system probably the way to go for me, Cheers Andy
Really like your vids, very informative but in a informal manner and without tech talk. Are you still 5’8” as claimed in every vid? 😂 I’m looking for a retro/adventure bike as a 65 year old reintroducing himself into biking. I intend to do a little touring but nothing to lengthy so will require a bike that takes panniers and possibly a top box. 900cc or above for a little mid range grunt and a max budget of £10,000. Any recommendations or suggestions would be appreciated, but having had a couple of triumph speed twins in the past I’m leaning towards that brand. In saying that I have an open mind Keep the video’s coming they’re great
And a curious solution to the slippery footpegs issue is..... The knurled items were already fitted to the pillion pegs! The same pegs as fitted to the 959, V2 and V4 models!!! They are very slippery, especially for track riding.
Nice video! I personally prefer the v2, for me, a Ducati, has to be red with single side swing arm. It’s like a Ferrari, it has to be red with a naturally aspirated v10 or v8, if it’s a McLaren, it has to be orange with loads of carbon fiber. I like owning things in their own personalities.
Love the V2, 899 came out before i got into bikes. I can’t believe that they are still skimping on the fuel gauge in 2020 though. Such shame, at that price point as well, where it has all the gizmos and electronics you want, don’t really ubderstand that tbh.
Hi, do you have a video where you talk about buying and owning a second hand bike ? i am planning to get a mid-size bike (600-800 cc), second hand. I currently have Duke 390 which is my 1st bike.
Excellent, thanks for that. It's sometimes crappy when we read professional journalist poke holes in a previous model, but when you revisit their articles from a few years ago, they made no reference to the 'issues'! It's evolution rather than revolution with bikes, and it's clear to any of us. Anyone running a 1980 superbike against a 2001 (21 years) would be completely outgunned with regards to braking, handling and engine performance. But a 2001 superbike verses a 2022? That would come down to the rider to a much greater extent. That we can fit the latest tyres to 20 year old superbikes helps, but it's certain that the pace of change has slowed. So a 5 year old Ducati is not going to be much more than an incremental change, and most of the changes are compulsory due to regulations. Again, great video, and I'm hoping to buy an 899 soon (a white one, so we don't get them mixed up ;-) )
You say you're not a big guy, but I'm wondering how the 899 feels seat height-wise. I'm 5'7" with around a 30" inseam so I feel like a low seat on any of the newer Ducati's is a must just so I'm not dirt biking it whenever I would need to come to a stop. Obviously not an option for the 899, but always curious what a current owner has to say since there aren't too many 899's out there to choose from when you really want to buy one.
Another good one. Always have me looking at second hand values of 899's. Seems to be anywhere between 8.5ish and 10ish k, so 5 k difference about right if you were considering buying either, but with an 899 to trade in, the difference could well be greater. The mirrors look like plain and simple cost cutting. Probably the only place I fold them in is in the garage and for that, that facility is really useful, as I'm tight for space. Top marks for braving the rain...the sacrifices you make for the channel!
Both great bikes but I would buy a second hand 899 with low mileage while you still can saving 5 or 6 thousand! 899 is a keeper and future classic and price sure to rise?
Future classic you’d have to be looking at the 1098 or 848. Last Ducati sport bikes with the trellis frame + none of this euro compliance stuff. Agree though if it was a choice between the 899 or v2, I think the opportunity to have something so similar whilst saving a few quid would be the way to go personally.
When you talk about engine heat. I had the Aprilia RSV4 factory while based in Singapore and what with the temperature during the day of 35 degrees and the heat coming off the engine I used to melt. You couldn’t touch the frame it was that hot
@@TheMissendenFlyer more power more heat...emissions rules hotter yet.....we are either going to transition to water cooled bikes or they will become unrideable because of heat!
The ducati performance front brake reservoir on your own bike is obviously smaller in the video hence why it has more clearance! If you had that part on the B2 there would be much the same gap I think.
I missed the point: "weight comparison". The V2 is EURO 5 certified and has a technically more detailed exhaust system (more weight). Single sided SA also means more weight. I'd be interested in a track day comparison... fly it's your turn ;-)
Very nice vid & comparison. Makes you realise that most bikes & manufacturers seldom really make many big leaps forward despite all the marketing blurb. Good shout regarding the V2 reservoir fairing collision too. Not seen anyone else mention that but it would bug me too.
Hey MissendenFlyer, how tall are you, you mention you are a fairly small built fella in the video, i'm 5'5 and its the only reason why i haven't pulled the trigger on the 899, as in seat height being too tall
899 for the looks and mirrors. They nailed it. V2 engine, clutch and electronics. Terrible choice as I do value both items almost equally. Heart would take 899, reason v2. Thinking about it I never had much fun buying with the reason.
The real change is the single sided swinging arm, instead of upgrading to another v2 i would spend 1500€ and upgrade the swinging arm of the 1199/1299...if i really needed it. And for real changes which ducati didn’t made to the v2 i would install the cruise control and up/down quick shift from TuneBoy. You can always make your bike better or as you would like it except for the fuel gauge😉
Interesting video - only problem I can see is that as someone who has bought a second hand Ducati: unfortunately some don't look after their bikes as well as you TMF!!! Subsequently I've bought the majority of my bikes nearly or new! Both gorgeous bikes though.
One issue with these bikes is that the rear light lens faces downwards and eventually gets holed by stones thrown up off the back wheel. A tail tidy is thy friend.
Certainly from the cam view, the V2 display is much more visible than the LCD on the 899? As for choice, both look fabulous, I couldn't say which I prefer. The non fold mirrors are a really black mark........what on earth were they thinking, saving pennies on a premium bike is inexcusable......ditto the brake reservoir impairment.
I'm a bit late to the comparison party, but I think the newer Supersport 950 looks closer to the 899/959 etc. than the V2, thus, making it more gorgeous . I don't know if it's just me though.
Thank you for posting. Very nice comparison. I agree with you. The "improvements" of the V2 over the 899 does not justify the upgrade. Also, the 899 is a rarer bike compared to the V2. Second, a couple of months ago I sat on a 2021 V2. Even though the brake reservoir did come quite close (about ⅛" = 3mm) to the wind screen, it did not touch. So maybe they fixed it in the 2021 model year. Finally, what is the brand of the dark screen for your 899?
Thanks for your kind words but I would strongly recommend you make this your second or third bike….I would work up to it and learn your craft on something sub 100bhp - of course you can do what you like, but if you go 899 for your first bike….it may be your only bike!
@TheMissendenFlyer Thank you. Yes, I am a novice however I have ridden friends bikes in the backyard and to the local grocery. Not the same thing of course but I will take it slow in the beginning! Ridden elecric bike around a bit too.
@TheMissendenFlyer Thank you. Warning heeded: I will get the 899 and park it in the garage then get a small cheap bike to learn the ropes with. Or get a part time job delivering pizza on Sunday's...
The 899 is my preference but any Ducati could grace my garage. I would go in just to take a look at my 996 ! I found that it became a second bike because if you went too far on it, you knew that you had to ride it all the way home........and then peel yourself off. (6’2”). Ooooh, creek, ooof....... I would recommend a factory visit too. So Special.
Yes I have - more comfortable, much smoother than the V2, but doesn't look as good or have that certain specialness the ducati has.....great bike though, and excellent value....
Immediately noticed the advantage of foldable mirrors. Totally agree they are indeed a better setup. Also, noticed sir you have two helmets per motorbike :D ... which ones you like the best? Arai...
If your nervous about riding in the wet, seriously throw on a pair of road or power 5 tyres from mitchlin. These tyres havw been hitting 150km in the wet and held beautiful
Quality review as always Andy. A bit concerning about the brake reservoir rubbing the fairing, can’t believe Ducati QC passed that! On another matter I’m aware either of these 2 bikes are streets ahead on the track compared to my beautiful Supersport S but on the UK roads my SS-S is no slouch so I wondered if there is any difference in speed or handling ?
15:15 wow that's brilliant. That's the most Italian thing ive seen. *reference to Jeremy Clarkson's review of the Alfa giulia quadrifoglio's doors being too small
I have owned my 959 for 3 years now. Its been a pleasure to own and ride; I honestly cannot justify switching from the 959 to the V2. They seem too similar, different fairing, updated electronics and the swingarm seem to be the highlights. Given my riding ability, I very much I doubt I could tell the difference. Good to see Duke carrying on the V Twin but other than that - its a no from me.
Yes, don't get me wrong, the V2 is a great (and better) bike than those that have gone before - with the exception of looks maybe - but it's only a tiny bit better in my opinion....like you I certainly can't tell that much difference...
I felt the 899 was cool but very crashable, difficult to ride, twitchy, difficult to balance, small, difficult to feel safe on, compared to my s1000rr, which is like a train i can latch on from every angle. is the V2 any better?
Really like them both to be honest- I own a 959 and really like the demented, angry "Ive not slept for a week" look of the V2, but I parked up next to one the other day at J&S, and was not disuaded either way... I'd love to own either! THough teh V2's mirrors are a little more... "Stalky"
You know, there is no weight on your wrists on a sport bike when you ride it correctly. Not saying you don't know that. Just thought it worth mentioning.
hey buddy would you elaborate. ive been on the track and were told to clamp down the bike with the knee area, and relax the wrists. but it could be just as tiring...
Silver decals and the better screen on V2. I wouldn't trade in the 899 yet. Quite surprising the way Ducati have gone backwards in key areas like the master cylinder banging on the V2 - to be fixed by dealer not at my expense. Also no fuel gauge with that tiny tank? Seriously. Enough to have me start looking at a Thruxton.
The single side swing arm on the V2 looks premium.
Yup with you there, made the choice for me
I prefer the 899 .. The difference for me is you get a lovely sunny day with a 899 rather than a monsoon with the V2 ..
I’m not sure the weather was completely linked to the bike I was riding!! If only it were.....

I hadn’t spotted that - I’m not so sure!
Ahh warm sunny days. I can’t wait for more of those. The Ducs were nice too 😀
Great review as always. Haven’t heard “gonads” in years....😂
Thank you for the comparison. To me it is no big step, but buying a bike in 2020 ist should have current electronics I think.
Fair enough...
Hey MissendenFlyer, how tall are you, you mention you are a fairly small built fella in the video, i'm 5'5 and its the only reason why i haven't pulled the trigger on the 899, as in seat height being too tall
I’m 5’8”
Brave man riding in the rain, thanks for the video. Im thinking of the street fighter v2!
Yes a great idea that - looking forward to trying one….
Does the V2 paintwork have a clear coat? I remember on your older videos it was an issue you raised on the 899.
I don’t honestly know but wouldn’t be surprised if not! That said thanks to my PPf my 899 still looks good as new….
899 all day long, great upload as always TMF 👍🏻
The 899 sounds awesome, that'd tip it for me. Cheeky new tail tidy on the Interceptor? Thanks again TMF.
No it's the same one as I've always had....
Great vid, I have 959 panigale and live in the Fens. The mirrors are fixed on mine.
The one arm swing is the biggest Point between 899 vs V2. Second the beast looking LED V4 front
899 for the looks and mirrors. They nailed it. V2 engine, clutch and electronics. Terrible choice as I do value both items almost equally. Heart would take 899, reason v2. Thinking about it I never had much fun buying with the reason.
Good point - these are a heart/emotional purchase....
You can always make your bike better or as you would like it except for the fuel gauge😉
how is the handling of a panigale v2? Does it feel like a 600cc or 1000cc sport bike in the corners?
It's closer to a 1000....
A brace of Panigale's roasting a pair of goolies, I'll take the red one, cheers what a hoot 🕪
Surely a fuel gauge on modern bike are a must especially when you’re paying for a “premium product” 😱.
Same fault with the new R18 BMW
Agreed...none on the new Ducati Streetfighter either!
Adds to the excitement of a Sunday ride....will I make it there or will I make it home. Italian riders roulette.
Bottom line, which one has the highest gps top speed and which one is easier for wheelies?
Interesting video - only problem I can see is that as someone who has bought a second hand Ducati: unfortunately some don't look after their bikes as well as you TMF!!! Subsequently I've bought the majority of my bikes nearly or new! Both gorgeous bikes though.
Good point - buyer beware and all that....
Nice review... I have the V2 and love it... you just have to carefully bend down the reservoir mount a bit with a tool and it won't touch the fairing.
Good tip! But a bit naff that it leaves the factory like that….
One issue with these bikes is that the rear light lens faces downwards and eventually gets holed by stones thrown up off the back wheel. A tail tidy is thy friend.
The LCD screen for me, I like them both. Great review TMF.
Heat is always a problem with Ducati bikes
how does comfort sitting position/ergonomics compare to the Supersport/
Nowhere near as comfy as the supersport!
I'm a bit late to the comparison party, but I think the newer Supersport 950 looks closer to the 899/959 etc. than the V2, thus, making it more gorgeous . I don't know if it's just me though.
It’s just you 😘
Thank you for posting.
Enjoyed your video, good presentation and thank you for firming up my decision to get me an 899. Ps, my first bike 🏍 and as a beginner!
@@masonichisenga3032 You have been warned!
So Special.
Yes - did you see my video on my factory visit in Bologna?
@@TheMissendenFlyer Aah, just found it. Thanks for the prompt !
How's the red paint on the v2? I know the 899 had problems with paint.
I dont honestly know - I suspect it’s the same...
@@TheMissendenFlyer Oh ok, Thanks
Hi...have you ever driven 2017 or newer GSX-R 1000? How would you compare it to V2?
Yes I have - more comfortable, much smoother than the V2, but doesn't look as good or have that certain specialness the ducati has.....great bike though, and excellent value....
Well I don't like the look of singlesided swingarms...so I stick to the old one! Are you testing the new Monster of any chance?
I hope to John!
Immediately noticed the advantage of foldable mirrors. Totally agree they are indeed a better setup. Also, noticed sir you have two helmets per motorbike :D ... which ones you like the best? Arai...
Depends which bike I’m riding!
Solid review once again Andy. 899 for me mate 👍🏻🇦🇺
Thanks Mike.....
Yes they feel VERY different on the road, after my 899 the Supersport I rode felt very slow (sorry!!!)
....much more comfortable though!
15:15 wow that's brilliant. That's the most Italian thing ive seen. *reference to Jeremy Clarkson's review of the Alfa giulia quadrifoglio's doors being too small
What do you think of the new Troy Bayliss V2 ?
I’ve not seen it….
I think the 899 is a much better looking bike!
Will you get the Panigale V4 SP? I really want to see that bike!
Great looking bikes but tend to be to small for me had a 916sp foggy rep few years ago and loved it but bit older now
Great review of two brilliant bikes......but not my favourite riding position.......stay safe.....thanks for sharing
Nor mine!
I felt the 899 was cool but very crashable, difficult to ride, twitchy, difficult to balance, small, difficult to feel safe on, compared to my s1000rr, which is like a train i can latch on from every angle. is the V2 any better?
Not really no!
Brilliant review of the two bikes 👍.
Thanks! 👍
Really like them both to be honest- I own a 959 and really like the demented, angry "Ive not slept for a week" look of the V2, but I parked up next to one the other day at J&S, and was not disuaded either way... I'd love to own either! THough teh V2's mirrors are a little more... "Stalky"
Agreed - great bikes all the Panigales.....
Fuel gauge ! I use the Steve Mc Queen method look in tank.old school😬
You know, there is no weight on your wrists on a sport bike when you ride it correctly. Not saying you don't know that. Just thought it worth mentioning.
I'm glad I'm not the only one that shares this thought
hey buddy would you elaborate. ive been on the track and were told to clamp down the bike with the knee area, and relax the wrists. but it could be just as tiring...
@@xosder5Hr5 videos point is to ride in a less tiring manner perhaps. any thoughts
I thought the 899 didn’t have the auto blip or Quick shift I forgot which one
It doesn’t have the autoblip - upshift only
Silver decals and the better screen on V2. I wouldn't trade in the 899 yet. Quite surprising the way Ducati have gone backwards in key areas like the master cylinder banging on the V2 - to be fixed by dealer not at my expense. Also no fuel gauge with that tiny tank? Seriously. Enough to have me start looking at a Thruxton.
just bought a cbr650r first bike, defo getting an 899 next, white abso beauty of a machine
It certainly is (not easy to ride though)
@@TheMissendenFlyer maybe save it for a few bikes time then ahhaha
Not sure i would fancy riding that V2 in that weather. I suspect they have race tyres on.
The electronics look after you - although you have to be careful of course...
Could you coerce Mrs Flyer into having a go pillion on the V2?
No chance!
Definitely prefer the styling of the 899 although a sports bike isn't for me.
