Living in Mexico, I grew up with punk in Spanish from Spain and every country in Latin America. Now that I think of it, the almost all of the punk music in English I have ever listed comes from the UK. The idea that Punk music in the USA is not associated with Latin people is bizarre to me.

For the record: 'Punk Rock'---as with Spirituals, Blues, Country Music, Ragtime, Jazz, Gospel, R n B, Rock n Roll, Soul, Funk, Doo Wop, Rap & Hip Hop, House Music etc., are music forms that enjoy African American roots.
This is, overall, pretty well done. I was in bands in L.A. in early 80s, and worked for The Plugz and their label - Fatima Recordz. The Plugz were the first punk band in L.A. to create their own label. There were Latinos in several bands, as well as in the scene. I always went to shows with a group of friends - all Latinos. Most of us were in bands. Latinos were a large part of the L.A. scene.
Well done? This video is atrocious. There are no Afro-Latinos, Carribean Latinos, the central American rock wave of the 1980s, the MASSIVE contribution Carribean Latinos in New York made to Punk, nothing out of Brazil, nothing . Just light-skinned Californians and bands popularized in the US. Incredible. You can tell this was put together by a bunch of American-Born Latinos that can't hold a conversation in Spanish outside of L.A. This was the type of SJW crap that people were uploading to youtube in the late 2010s to look woke and diverse and in the end just made fools of themselves. These videos are really badly reserached and not aging well.

@Sean Diaz being latino is not a culture...los colombianos por ejemplo no somos lo mismo que los mexicanos, are we? stop trying to make of the term "latno" and identity.
I’m sure I’m beating a dead horse, but it’s not “Latinx,” it’s Latino. Spanish, like many other European languages, features gendered suffixes. If I’m saying I’m with my friends, Maria and Felipe, I’d still refer to them as “mis amigos.” Using the term Latinos doesn’t mean you are ignoring women, it’s just the way you refer to Latinos. I don’t travel in any circles that use the term Latinx, because if you speak Spanish to any degree, you know that Latinos is the correct way to say it in Spanish. Also, it’s easier to say “Latinos” than to say “Latinx people” and anyway all of that categorization is vague and confusing. And English uses a lot of loan words from other languages. The word taco for example has no translation in English. And it uses a host of French words for which there are not really any alternatives. bourgeois. brunette. blond(e) adieu. au contraire. chauffeur. chic. critique. So on top of the fact it’s sort of whitewashing, it’s also not really helpful in communicating information, and it isn’t any more or less difficult or foreign to say “Latino” than it is to say “chauffeur.” It would be like replacing that word with something like “drivist.” I don’t even really understand what the point of eliminating the Hispanic origin in a word that is mostly used by and refers to Hispanic people. I’m not upset or anything, I’m not saying this is a bad video for using Latinx in the script, I just think if i was gonna discuss a wide group of cultures’ impact on a certain genre of music, I would probably try to use the correct word instead of making one up, especially if it kind of removes the identity of that group of cultures from the word that refers to them. Anyway, I just wanna note that the polish word for “German” translates roughly to “mute” because Germanic tribes did not speak the same language as Slavs of (modern day) Poland. Romans called them something different, it seems everyone had a different name for them. In Spanish, Germany is called Alemania, named for a large Germanic tribe called the aleman. It happened all the time and I’m sure the Germans aren’t any more upset about it than we are but it’s kind of weird and interesting to think about. I think I’m talking about it mostly because we have some say in what we’re called in a place like the United States, where a lot of us live and refer to ourselves as Latinos, whereas ancient Germans had probably no idea that people in Iberia were referring to the entire region as Aleman, or that some Slavs called them Mutes because they couldn’t understand each other, or that the Romans called them by the name they made up for the region that spoke that specific language.
Isn't mexican culture still heavily influenced by the Spanish? Like it's pretty shocking to me how many catholics are in Mexico given the history there. I think latinx americans have to deal with a really racially polarized environment, and given that, it should be understandable they'd want to take a step away from European culture.

Why not just use the term "Latin"? That would take care of everything - no gender issues, no disrespect to the Spanish language, and everyone is included because the term is more cultural than racial. So how about it? The Very Latin History of Punk. There. Mission accomplished in all aspects!
Because Latin isn’t the same as Latino/Latina. Latin is a ancient language from Rome (Parabellum, Vini Vici Vidi, etc). If anything using Punk Latino would be a correct grammatical use (El punk o el genero Punk would need the use of the O ending)
Latinx isn't a word, literally no one uses that, I live in Socal and in the punk community here and I'm Mexican, not one of us has ever said latinx, that's a white person word
Punk and all it's derivatives (hardcore, skacore, crust, thrashcore, Oi!, grindcore, etc,) is a universal kinda thing. One of the few genres of music where ya can go to a show and see the whole rainbow of humanity in the crowd and onstage. It's a beautiful thing and one of the biggest reasons it's always been a hotbed of resistance and alternative ways of living and building a future worth having. I'll actually never forget when I was in my mid-teens and got shipped to Florida from NYC to stay with an aunt and cousin cause I got into some trouble (again) and me and my cousin went to a show and as soon as the first song started these 2 Latinx dudes grab me and we started dancing around the pit as a three-person wrecking ball dragging people in lol I ended up becoming good friends with em later and found out they were 1st generation Mexicans, twins, surprisingly straightedge and cool as hell. We'd burn a flag at almost every show and that was just to start the night 😂 We beat down Nazis anytime they showed up and even had a routine as to how we'd go about it. They ended up moving a few years later but we've stayed in touch. Miss those cats. Punk is for the PEOPLE! Long Live Punk! ✊👊✌♥A///E
Ever heard of Los Bros Hernandez? They did(still do!) a great punk comic, with that proper fusion of hispanic and punk culture (I think the brothers actually went from being low riders to being punks). The comic is called Love and Rockets (And they named it that before the band!). It tackles a lot of stuff many writers today still can't do very well, and does them gracefully. Two of the most famous characters:Maggie and Hopey, bisexual punk women who date each other on and off.Just as an example, there are many more. And they've had this comic running on and off since 1981!

But that’s why it should be a real discussion, not just us getting offended to the point where our perfectly valid reason to be offended by such blatantly ignorant terms is obscured by an incoherent slurry of racial resentment. There’s no point in standing for your people if you’re just going to stoop to the level of the people who would like to walk all over us.

Why did you completely ignore the Stains? That’s the first and greatest punk rock band to ever come out of East Los Angeles, and they were on Black Flag ‘s SST record label. Extremely important band!!!
This is total revisionism...the first punk bands were not blacks and Latinos..First straight up punk bands were Crime(early 76 SF considered by many people on the inside to be the first legit punk release ie with punk sound, attitude and lyrics), The Damned(76 London), Ramones(74 New York), Television(74 New York). There was a few early bands with all Latin Members the prime one(and one of the best, one of my all time favorites) was The Zeros from Chula Vista, they released the Wimp/Don't push me around 7" in late 76. Also the Nuns from SF had a few Hispanic members primarily Alejandro Escovedo and they released a 7" in 76. There was also the Plugz from 77-78 and they were Latino as well, but if we look at it honestly the vast majority of punk bands were white. That's not how I want it to be, just the way it was. Look at the crowds in old videos. Literally a sea of white faces. So honestly who were all these Latino and Black punk bands from 75-77? I would literally love to hear them. The earliest I can think of would be Bad Brains who formed in 78(originally a funk band called mind power who fully admit that one of the Members came home with the Anarchy in the UK 7" by the sex pistols and they became a punk band that day) or the Zeros( formed in 76 and though they were from Chula Vista were part of the early scene with bands like The Weirdos, Germs, Eyes, the Victims)
English speakers don't get that in languages with genders, sometimes the neutral and male gender is the same. Nobody needs latinx because latino is already friggin gender neutral or plural - latinos, along with being used for males. Why do they have to make everything an issue, it's so exhausting. English-speakers shoving their woke agenda on another culture and language. Needs to stop. This video just perpetuating this non sense.

Latinx is a term invented by Latin Americans to represent gender non conforming Latin people as well. Which is reasonable considering their are little to no gender neutral terms in Spanish. Also Latino isn’t a race, it’s an ethnicity. It’s not that deep.
Aisling There isn’t exactly gender neutral terms in Spanish baby. Literally everything in the Spanish language is tied to gender. The terms was invented for and by trans and non-binary Latinos. Why does it matter so much to y’all? The terms “Latino” and “Hispanic” is colonialist in it of itself.
I really love this, I've never came across this type of information before, and being a Latinx punk, this is really inspiring. Will definitely take inspiration from this and influence my punk band.
Funny thing is. Blacks are critical for punk. I'm a white, teenage male punk, but bands like the Bad Brains and Death changed punk music forever. Women like poison ivy from the cramps, Wendy o Williams from plasmatics, and Kim gordon from sonic youth for example for women changed punk. White men like Johnny Rotten, Henry rollins etc. Punk is for everyone, not just white males, and that's why I like punk so much, it's not about skin, gender, where you're from etc. You like punk? You're apart of the brotherhood we have. You're one of us, you're apart of a family. One of the biggest things in punk, is Union, we are all united as one, but all as individuals. Our union has no rules, no limitations, no exclusions. Those who think punk is "just for white boys", they really have zero knowledge of the history, future and current state of punk. They deserve the right to say that, because we have the right to prove they don't know what they're talking about.
Death are a cool band but they weren't influential at all. They literally released 1 hard rock/proto punk 7" that until that album for the whole world to see got released in 2008 was only known by people who were into Killed by death compilations. I heard the first Death 7" in 2003 on the No one Left to Blame compilation when I was about 13, it was a compilation of very obscure bands who had yet to be on a comp(the Killed by death comps started the trend of finding very obscure bands in 89 so by the early 2000s most people felt like the best obscure stuff had already been comped, thus one of the later comps was called Staring Down the Barrel in 2006)... Years before they released the for the whole world to see collection of what they had recorded in 76. I loved Keep on Knocking and still do, it's a classic hard rock/proto punk song. They are a great band but it's complete revisionism to say they were an influential punk band. They simply were not. Literally no one knew about them in 1976-2003 and they didn't get popular at all till the comp from 2003 and then still they were only known by KBD nerds, after the for all the world to see collection they started getting lots of press, they were extremely obscure which is why bands usually got put on KBD type compilations at all. They were a good proto punk band with one 7" similar to many many other great bands who released 1 of 2 7' and disappeared.Bad Brains are obviously one of the best punk bands of all time and are totally influential.
on the word Latinx: Reactions to the term have been mixed. Supporters say it engenders greater acceptance among non-binary gender Latinos. Critics say the term is ungrammatical and disrespectful toward the Spanish language. Both supporters and detractors point to linguistic imperialism as a reason for respectively supporting or opposing the use of the term. - from wikipedia
No. The supporters are English speakers who don’t understand grammatical gender. Detractors are Spanishspeakers globally who don’t want America to define its terms for them. Hispanics don’t need to be “saved” by Americans even if they do have Hispanic roots.

A) the standard narrative about punk has been that it is white
B) the West Coast US Scene has largely been left out of punk history until recently
C) Death was not part of the 'Punk' scene and were not known out side of a small cult of collectors until the Doc came out.
D) Punk was inclusive in the early days because it was open to everyone, and that meant that the outsiders who didn't fit in the majority or minority groups, as time went on it became more closed, uniform
E) Just as most people don't know that the original Skinheads were Black working class people who had immigrated to the UK from various outposts in the empire in the gulf of Mexico (mostly Jamaica) for blue collar job, most people don't know much about the 4 main punk scenes --inspired mainly by Reggae, Pubrock, the Velvet Underground, The MC5, The Stooges and 60s Garage Rock -- that sprang up in the mid 70s in London (growing out of the Pub Rock Scene), New York City, LA/SF and Sydney..

And it uses a host of French words for which there are not really any alternatives. bourgeois.
brunette.
blond(e)
adieu.
au contraire.
chauffeur.
chic.
Its honestly disgusting that white liberals try to dictate the language of latinos.
Yeah and that same language was developed and changed so why aren’t you okay with change if it helps other amongst the community feel validated.
glksjgkrjhkehjks the term "Latino" is WHITE so come up with another argument. The Latin languages are WHITE.
Isn't mexican culture still heavily influenced by the Spanish? Like it's pretty shocking to me how many catholics are in Mexico given the history there. @@gh6766 that's what I'm saying too. Like whats with the catholicism, am i right?

The first punk bands were Latinos and African Americans and I’m glad someone is finally talking about it
The Velvet Underground and the Stooges also started punk.

Love this , the video I needed in my life
Vato I ain’t never met no one say punk was a white thing
So nice to see The Plugz mentioned! I still listen to them regularly.
I really love this, I've never came across this type of information before, and being a Latinx punk, this is really inspiring. Will definitely take inspiration from this and influence my punk band.
Please dont
Don't let guerros force you to call yourself LatinX

"With out all of us it would be nothing!" That's the quote.
They were a good proto punk band with one 7" similar to many many other great bands who released 1 of 2 7' and disappeared.Bad Brains are obviously one of the best punk bands of all time and are totally influential.
on the word Latinx:
Reactions to the term have been mixed.
@@Grokford homie have you heard of muxes. similar concept
@@Grokford queer latines exist you don't get to play off our existence as "Americans trying to save the language"
@@MC-ns8gb I am a Queer Latino. Queer Latinos exist all over the Spanish-speaking world. That doesn’t mean that you’re right in altering the language.
Not to mention that the -e suffix is masculine as often as it is neutral so you’ve really just shifted the problem.
@@Grokford language exists to serve people not the other way around, if it's not working you can change it
keith morris was black flags original frontman not Ron Reyes
Forgetting Alan Vega from Suicide here is unforgivable.
I was in an East LA punk band called Crucial Justice in the 90s. Good times and great gigs back in the day! So many fantastic bands!
Keith Morris was the original front man Black Flag not Ron Reyes. Sorry, Black Flag is one my favorite punk bands.
Well Ron reyes was the frontman in the decline of western civilization so he became the first thought in people's heads when thinking on pre-rollins black flag
I Love Union 13. Watching from London.
So in love with Alice's hair!!.....I do like the mini doc.... similar to AfroPunk being introduced...This should be expounded on...I would love to see that....
So many fukin dots lol
It also doesn't make mention of the New York Hardcore scene which is renown for strong hispanic voices or of the historic punk scenes in Santiago, Chile, Montevideo, Uruguay or Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The host talks shit about “angsty white boys” and plays a boring song from The Zeros (from Chula Vista) and then goes on to credit The Zeros for being a “Latinx” band from West Hollywood, while playing Nausea by X (a band, to my knowledge, consisted of white people). These poseurs can never get their facts right. And I highly doubt any of these bands would use “Latinx” unironically.
If I had a punk band, I'd name it, "Appropriating Caucasity"
I was always told by my brother that all rock was for the white boys, so I put it in my back pocket for another day. I recently opened myself up to punk and realize he didn't know what the hell he was talking about. I love docs like this could any of you more knowledgeable in punk people help me find more documentaries like this. Thanks in advance.
If you use the term "white boy" then your not welcome in punk, hardcore or metal. These scenes are open to all races and ethnicities but you can't be anti-white. It's not like rap where you can openly diss whites and say racist shit. Frankly it would be hazardous to your health.
Yeah white people suck
In NYC, late 70s and early 80s Mink DeVille was a force in early punk. I believe all the band members we Latino and laced a lot of the songs in English with some Spanish. I probably saw Mink DeVille as many times as I saw the Ramones or Johnny Thunders.
Allowing the word Latinx to come out of your mouth is probably the least punk rock thing a person could possibly do.
Latin America is more rock and roll than America these days. America is mostly hip hop... I love my Latin American following!
Michelle Gonzales- Spitboy
Highly recommend Pancho Villa's Skull, they're a great Chicano punk band!
