- Even before most Americans woke up to the news of the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, wild conspiracy theories about what supposedly had "really" happened were running rampant online. CNN's Donie O'Sullivan reports on some. #cnn #news

Wildest conspiracy theory I heard? The harbor pilot and ship's captain had covid shots recently, and one of them passed out on the power switch. Like there was a big red "off" button. FFS.
Ohh dam i spent 3 years at sea. And when they are done navigating on the bridge and safely moored in port the control of the engine speed and such is transferred to the engine room control room and then the Engine officers shuts the Engines down. and the other way on startup.
@Infernal_Elf I've actually been on the bridge of a couple of ships. One was a freighter hauling tacanite berries, the other, the U.S.S. San Jacinto (relative in the Navy gave us a tour). There's not just a power button, steering wheel, and accelerator like I imagined the antivaxxer pictured (I know you know that). The "dashboard" (I don't know the real name) is like 12' across and covered with gages, switches (not a big, red power button labeled "off") for a person to faint onto and cause the engines and lights shut off. I'm explaining for people who have never been on the bridge of a ship. I can't explain antivaxxers, but a five second Google search could probably get them the idea that it's more like an airplane cockpit than it is a '68 VW Beetle.

@@jamesparker1071 While I don't agree with the conspiratorial nature of your comment, there is some truth to it in the sense that you've hit on one of the potential issues. There were tugboats escorting the ship but they did not accompany them along the entire trip, only to guide the ship out of the berth and into its lane. The Port of Baltimore, like many ports in the US, have lower requirements for how long a cargo ship needs to be escorted which would pose a higher cost to shipping companies. So in a sense, someone making a profit could be a potential cause for this disaster though it was the companies already making extra profit by not having an extended tugboat escort before this disaster as opposed to someone making money off of it afterwards.
Also there were 2 harbor pilots on board the ship so I don't know what you're getting at with the first thing you said.

The real miracle is that these kinds of accidents don't happen more frequently. Imagine all the shipping, all around the world, coming in and out of ports. Humans, all prone to accidents, are in charge of it all. It's not a conspiracy; it's an accident. We should be relieved to realize how rare they are.
I think conspiracy theorists are afraid of things they cannot control. Like accidents.
As tragic as these accidents are, we should learn from them and take measures to prevent the same ones from happening again. That sadly isn't always the case.

@ccollins. The reason it doesn't happen more often is because in Ports around the World large vessels are required by LAW to have a Harbor Pilot and Tug Boat assistance before sailing near critical infrastructure.... Common sense....

The American Heritage Dictionary defines a theory as a "...set of statements or principles devised to explain a group of facts or phenomena, especially one that has been repeatedly tested or is widely accepted... ." As a Baltimore native, I thank CNN for this report. I live north of the city, but it will always be my hometown. The comments I have seen are just disgusting.
Should they rebuild the bridge? Ie. does it carry enough traffic to be worth rebuilding? (All the pictures I've seen have very few cars.)

Why the ships pilot did not deploy both anchors??
How far away from the bridge did the container ship loose its power????
The tide was not going out according to nautical charts. Both anchors depolyed would have slowed the ship in the bay??
Was the pilot of the ship at the helm a US citizen, provided by the harbor master???
Who worked on the ship while in port and was the ship tested for operational effectiveness before heading out to sea ???
The ship is registered out of Sri Lanka , which has identified numerous terrorist groups operating in that country. Due to recent terrorism in the world one would wonder if this was an intentional act while the US boat pilot was at the helm???
Why wasnt any arial flares fired into the air or fog and warning horn sounded to warn all on the bridge???
Where were the escorting pilot ships or tug boats??
The coast guard should have been patrolling the waters near the bay area. What were they doing????

The ship is not sea worthy so it can be scrapped for money to pay for our bridge.

As soon as this happened I remembered the story about a cargo ship busting through a dock. It happened in New Orleans; and it tore down many offices/hotels (costing roughly $100M in damages).

The best way to deal with these conspiracy theories is to ignore them. All they are interested in is publicity. Unfortunately, there will be people who think they have somehow won the lottery because their particular conspiracy theory has been aired on programmes like this. My thoughts are with the families of the victims, and the crew, who must be devastated that they were unable to prevent this.

That ship wasn’t on course. It was no where near the middle of the bridge. It was heading to the pylon before it lost power.

What effect does that actually have on anything? It just gets people worked up with a lot of stuff that is typically false. I figure this was an accident, but know there is a certain group of people who are investigating it to look into it, and I’m leaving it up to them. I just don’t understand people wanting to think the worst about things.

Just because you think it is not a conspiracy, doesn't mean it's not. This huge ship was either soon to dock or had recently departed the docks. Where were the tugboats used to park or launch it not dispatched to assist ASAP? Were there no tugboats on duty in that whole area that night? I saw several tugboats within 3 miles or less to the bridge on a Google Earth view (dated Sep 8, 2023). I think the Harbor Master needs to answer these questions. There was not one tug seen on the impact video. Conspiracy or truth?

I suggest you listen to the Admiral of the Coast Guard who made a great statement yesterday along with Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. They're on scene working with professionals and engineers and detail all the next steps that will take place since the crash.
Investigations can take a while with these type of failures as they go deeply into it -- modeling to see why the bridge fell the way it, looking at the wreckage to see if there was any structural or building issues contributing to it/etc.
It'll likely take less, but they're likely padding the time temper expectations and reduce folk trying to rush them (as rushed investigations can make mistakes).
I suggest if bored some day, listen to a NTSB hearing for example of how thorough that agency is (which they don't have power to implement changes, just issue recommedations, but that helps them be impartial -- it's on us voters to vote in people that will implement changes). I listened to some of the Miracle on Hudson one (as background sound while spring cleaning) -- not at all like the movie portrayed. They have a youtube channel.
Preliminary report takes 2 - 4 weeks which usually has a probable cause. The in depth of the specific cause takes much longer. Lots of minutia from drug screening to detailed second by second Voyage Data Recorder readout of many parameters; interview transcripts or summaries of vessel traffic controllers, the police dispatchers, police that closed the bridge, surviving construction workers.
