Power Box is a lot cooler looking.
Yes, the power boxes are expensive
BUT
They charge my phone, laptop, occasional power tools, and give me light for thirty days until I can recharge. The power boxes are a dramatic life changer for me.
found this after watching your other vids. I agree. And was going to use 2 different adapters to use as a power source. switching them as needed. But I like being in the box as it helps me keep up with them a little easier.
I switched to this last year. It serves double purpose for me since I run a dewalt drill for my auger as well.
I took your design and added a small inverter with a switch and wired it to a socket on the outside with a flip cover. I also added a sae connector on one side for a 50w solar panel with built in charge controller. Hard to replace that with what you showed... i love the design of your box though...
Hi - do you have video or pictures of your setup?
Nah, the 2 amp max draw on the 12v output severely limits these DC to DC converter's ability to power what a power box can.
For what the vast majority of what people run off em these work perfectly fine
@@JDSOutdoors Horses for Courses... 👍 🇬🇧
Brilliant. And thanks for linking the adapter!
Bought one for my craftsman 19.2 V.
Thank You!
Of coarse the power station you show is old school. You are using an old school AGM battery as the heart of it! A Lithium Phosphate battery is the only way to go!
Great video and good point 🤯Still like the boxes for certain gear rigs. But these adapters are hot!
LiFPo4 has some advantages over Lithium Ion. Generally LiFepo4 batteries are sealed, so you don't have to worry as much about getting them wet(Don't leave your cordless drill out in the rain). LifePO4 batteries are safer in that they don't have the thermal runaway issues you can experience with L-ion, potential fire hazard. LifePO4 batteries also can be charged a few thousand times verses hundreds of times you can charge a Li-ion battery without losing capacity. LifePO4 batteries are not as energy dense as L-ion, so they add slightly more weight/size, but still much better than lead acid. Also, LiFePO4 cannot be charged at low temperature (Freezing) or damage may result. So, I think you battery box still has plenty of uses for LiFePO4 applications, it's just about choosing what is best in each case.
Building a power box gives you the builder more satisfaction that you made something that works, and is useful. It's also a very good beginners project for an introduction to solar power. Technical hobbies are also good for most men.
Milwaukee has a really nice one called Top Off and it even has a 110 plug on it, has usb and usb C, keep them out they are high but you can do a lot with them
I still use the DIY powerbox but have always been using with my DeWarlt 20v Lithium battery.... because? I still want my own configurations of switches, ports.... But I do use the smallest box I can use. Besides... I want a safety of fuse in there as well.
Can't beat the compact size of the tool battery route for what a lot of people use them for. Of course there are scenarios when certain options and mounts are ideal to partner with a power box, so I think there is still a market for those, it's just much smaller than what it used to be like you say
100% agree with using one of these adapters. I also have a step down for 12v dc to powerpoles. lots of uses. But the larger battery box would be more ideal for different applications. I think both options should be utilized. Of course, if you need to start up quick and don't have the cash, get the adapter and start using it for your projects etc, right away. I do Ham radio and would need something larger with better discharge, My dewaLT can't keep up.
Great video and good points. but depending on your needs, I would suggest both.
Though it seems like a good idea to use a powertool battery, you'll never get the power output from the tool battery that you would be able to get from a lead acid / Lithium iron phosphate drop in battery. That 12 vilt output barrel connection is go for what maybe 2-3 amps? I built a power box with 2 12 volt accessory ports, 2 usb ports, volt meter, 3 separate switches, 3 separate fuses along with an anderson 50 amp output to connect a 1,000 watt continuous power inverter. It also has a 1,280 lumen weatherproof light. The watt hour storage from the 3 Dakota lithium batteries exceeds a 35 amp lead acid.
BE careful about drawing down spend genuine and even knock off Dewalt, Makita, Milwaukee cordless tool batteries with those adapters. A LOT of those on Amazon have no low voltage/undervolt protection -- even those which claim they do. Be they power wheel adapter, or small light with USB, or USB with a 12v etch, make 100% sure they cut off at 14-15 volts. And that each accessory turns off
I like the product is there a way to connect these with 12volt sockets
Thanks
Could you possibly do a video on a solar charging option for these batteries using a DC charger? Been trying to find out a lot of information about this but kind of comes to a dead end. Or it’ll take forever to charger a battery.
Think I still want the power box.. I want to use the power box to do a movie outdoor at a open space park with my projector..
Wow! Cool, I'm looking for power for my Garmin striker 4
I made a boom box and have a solar charge controller in it, all the load is though it but 1 set of banana jacks, which I use to charge the 2 lithium batteries connected in parallel. Can I hook a 3rd lithium battery in parallel with the other 2 via the pre mentioned banana jacks?
Be careful buying Chinese ones. If you leave it on your battery more than a couple days, it doesn't stop draining your battery until its at 0v. Thus ruining or drastically reducing battery life.
I got same dewalt battery's. that great.that have a 15Ah 60V now, also try the DCB049K usb C 100watt PD charger. running my laptop now. HP 17 in with USB C to HP blue tip cord. run hours and hours on 10Ah 20V. with all that I still use a homemade battery box. reason is ham radio use. ICOM draws over 20 amps peak. that adapter can not give the amps and also is a switch mode converter witch makes hash noise in the HF bands. even CB . so I bult my own out of harbor freight 50 cal ammo box. using a LiFePO4 battery. built in MPPT solar charge controller . using a 100 watt x2 folding panels. great out in the field power box. my only problem is MPPT under the right sun and if on lower HF bands sometimes I get noise. ferrite was a great fix. and that make a small inverter that goes on DeWalt battery. not a sign wave type. also got the DeWalt power station 1800 watts takes 4 buttery's. runs a coffee pot in my tent just fine. mostly use it to charge 4 buttery's at once.
So does a 60v battery step down to 5X the capacity at 12V? For example does 60v 6AH equate to 30AH @ 12 V?
Good question and by the math that would make sense yes. I do know the 60v bats in 20v tools last forever
Still the OG powerbox IMO
I agree and many have copied it which is fine but times are always changing and the compact adapter is going to kill that market
Build the box but upgrade to the larger harbor freight pelican cases for your build, sturdier plastic n sealed much better
but for camping and emergency power... the ammo can high energy high amp out would be the ONLY solution. to charge the phones u don't even need a power tool batter and the adapter piece..... a cheap power bank would be more than enough.
Shame, I just watched the version 2 build and was starting to put together a buy list to source all of the components! I'll check out the adapters!
Do they make one for Walmart Hyper Tough???
How long would a CDH run on a 60v DeWalt battery?
great find mate.... BUT the power boxes I've built are mostly for camping, and the large one (24v) powers a 3kw inverter for "emergencies".... power tool batteries still need their charge, my built ones are charged directly from the various solar panels we take.... Peace.
The larger boxes like that definitely have there place.
@@JDSOutdoors TBH mate I've been looking at stripping down the power tool batteries n making my own battery using them as cells.... Just not got the balls, or the spare cash to do this ATM. They're obviously more powerful n long lasting, hardy etc than the SLA...
The first link doesn’t work. I found the adapter for Dewalt but it only has the usb slots and not the other plug-in.
great idea, BUT you dont have a Glo Hole to energize your glo jigs
How does it handle the light system for the whole kayak? I have the kobalt version and im sure i can find usb powered lights on amazon
Handles it perfectly
What is the most usual capacity?
The only one I found on Amazon has a max input voltage of 22 VDC where did you find one to except 60 VDC?
The 60v batteries output 20v unless put into a 60v tool. Hence the flex volt.
But what about if I'm on a kayak trip and I need them to be recharged with a solar panel
Then a box is the best option for that
I purchased an adapter for my dewalt 20 volt batteries to run the powerbox, it has a positive and negative lead but I believe that will put 20volts to my box wired at 12 volts, will that hurt anything? And what if I hook it to a flexvolt?
Install a step down converter.
I don't understand the reason for 5 switches. I have 3 boxes I have made.. and I keep charged up from solar panel for camping, deer stand, boat or anywhere I need.. bought everything from harbor freight!
Helix fish finder on my kayak draws .8amps per. Hour, gonna need 2 6ah batteries to make it most of the fishing day, what do those cost? I have a 15aH littlhium 12v that was only 106
Hi, for the same price as your 15Ah battery, you can build now a pack with a car jump starter of 99,8Ah with box and needed stuff.
Just a question from a noob, do all tool battery adaptors have under volt protection please? Much thanks
They have a bms so I'm assuming yes
Appreciated, thank you!
Who makes the adapter you are showing? The Amazon link you provided doesn’t work!!
They are pretty much all sold out right now. Check back later or watch local stores that sell tools they get em every now and then.
What if you’re using a powerbox for a ham radio though?
They do serve a purpose still but 90% can get away without it.
I have a 5 amp Milwaukee. Will this run my Garmin 34 plus?
Yes
how long would this run a ham radio i wonder?
Well how many Amps does the radio pull? Are they 12v also? I'm not familiar with ham
Hey, as long as I can re charge it over and over and it can use Solar, I'm all good.
You mentioned 12v. I want to power a 12v pump but would it properly step down if I use a 20v battery?
Yes
@@JDSOutdoors ok thanks. I am just seeing things all over saying needing a step down and all so you don’t burn out the motor but I could always measure what is coming out. Thanks.
So what happens when your Dewalt battery and power box battery dies? I was looking at your design of the power box and there would be enough run to put a hand crank motor that you could put a handle on to manually charge the dead battery. Store the handle in the case and when needed, take it out, connect it to the crank and turn to generate charging for your battery. You can't do this with the Dewalt on it's own, but you could do it with the power box. :-)
If the battery dies you have to charge it. I like the idea of the crank like the emergency flash lights or radios
The dewalt link doesn't work. Can you send an updated link. Thanks!
amzn.to/3DoZNQB
Your link to the DeWalt adapter is not working. Can you update your link? Thank You..
Again dang this is the second time Amazon has switched it.
can I run my ice box with this ?
Of course Ryobi would make their own and charge 3x what everyone else has them priced at.
To be fair it has the inverter in it lol
the ryobi version of this is $20 at HD but doesn't have the 12v out
I've never seen in any videos on how to charge the powerbox once you've got it made
My power box video shows it. It's also the original power box video on yt
What would be good size plastic ammo box that fit 2 6.5 150w marine speakers on the front for Bluetooth build?
50cal
@@JDSOutdoors is there a utility knife I could use to cut the round speaker holes out and how could I get the right hole for a charge pie on the box?
@@kylewilliams3306 hole saw is best
@@JDSOutdoors I do not have a hole saw or drill so what would be another option to cut holes in plastic ammo box?
@@kylewilliams3306 very sharp utility knife
I appreciate the DeWalt USB and battery combo is handy. I own them. However, I have made 2 of your power boxes and would never give them up. Why the 180 degree turn?
Size and price. I'm not saying the power boxes suck but in a time where everything is getting more expensive, and people are taking way more stuff out camping, fishing etc why not save a little money and space is all. The power box has its place.
Yea. What else is he hiding from us?
Cool brother but if have TV can't run TV or laptop if there power out need something that can run TV,Laptop, fridge etc ok have thinking way ah head
Why not just use your dewalt battery to to power up your power box
Ok put an adapter to use the Dewalt (or other) inside the most powerful ammo power box!!!!
Could easily do that as well
the 12V out put only has 2amp max draw. good idea, but not enough umph!
You can’t beat a power box, a lot of good use other than you explained.
What other uses that the adapters can't accomplish?
@@JDSOutdoors Glo ry Hole
@@JDSOutdoors I will admit that this concept does have it's place and is definitely worthwhile to own....... As long as you're aware of the limitations.
As for the "other uses"....... All of my solar generator boxes have pure sine inverters, and of course, a solar charge controller. In a "grid-down" scenario (or camping in the middle of nowhere) you'll run out of power and have no way to recharge your battery pack. Then you'll probably wish you had a mini solar generator box instead. My latest version is only 6" x 3.5" x 6.5" with all of the bells & whistles and a 450Wh lithium battery inside.(40.5Ah). It is far more capable than just the adapter & battery and very reasonably sized too.
@@test-193 now we're talking a different category. I have a video coming out soon on solar generators. I'm building a 3,000 watt pure sine wave with 400ah lithium and 400w solar. Obviously that will power more than the 5a 12v adapter
@@JDSOutdoors field ham operation, field recording are 2 examples. Where you need more than a few hours of power and can't interrupt the power source. I can see where a power box would be more weatherproof than this as well. But the adapters are nice I use them on my packs for other things like 12v fans and led's. Fans in the rv, fans over electronic equipment, fans in the rv fridge hah
That's no fun. It's practical - I'll give you that. And it's nice to have it at the ready, but people like building the boxes for fun.
Those are nice and all, but I'm not going to be able to stay out all day fishing off 1 drill battery ....
$100 for a power box ... I built mine for under $25, and my battery was only $20 on top of that.
My budget for my battery station is a little higher though, planning a 100ah lithium build to power all lights, fans, and livescope
I can fish all day off 1 drill battery why can't you? Plus the beauty is most people have more than 1 battery to bring with.
@JDS Outdoors I'm not sure my livescope and lights are gonna last to long on one of those ... weight wise my Amped outdoor 30ah is about equal, ill just stick with that till I build my power station.
@@mjnelson84 you would be surprised
So show me how to charge it with a solar panel, I don't want to pay a power company
Power? What's the power?
The DeWalt is a 20v 6AH battery, or, 120 WH. The upgraded 9AH battery is still only 180WH.
With the "Flex", you might get 60v out of it, but the power would still be the same. The 180WH battery would give you 3AH equivalent, at best.
So, in the big boy battery box, you may wind up with much greater power - that has to be taken into account.
The USB is only pulling 5v max and the plug is 12v and that 12v plug has ran my fishing electronics for longer than the power box ever did. For what most people run off the boxes this adapter is a way better option
@@JDSOutdoors Well, it's easier than building, and if you have spare tool banks, you're set.
@@colfaxschuyler3675 it's easier and cheaper. Most people have some brand of power tool and they have this adapter for all of them
@ colfax... the standard 120Wh will last 6hours, the 180Wh will last 9 hours.
I suppose you formuled it a bit wrong , "equivalent" should have been additionally.
@@Ben-rw7wgI probably did. This was from two years ago, and, listening to it again, I have no idea what I was talking about.
I am glad that you commented, as I had lost track of the video.
The battery pack attachments are fantastic.
I've been raiding the discard battery bins for a while, and have accumulated a bazillion packs and broken them down for the 18650s. They wound up getting a good deal on Ryobi packs, and put the building on hold.
Twelve 4 AH packs, several 2 AH packs, and an assortment of 1.5 AH packs. Ryobi kits with both USB and power inverters.
Jigs for cheap LED "fog lamps" from Amazon.
Maybe one day I'll build a bigger box - I'd love to have enough backup to keep the fridge at temp during a power outage, but other than that, we can run much of the purge stuff needed.
I never sourced the 12 AH 60v DeWalt he mentioned... 720w of lithium ion batteries would be a monster.
Sell me the power box you built
HmHm...MAKITA !!
The word you’re looking for is obsolete
Not gonna power panoptix very long…
Those adaptors have no low voltage protection, will kill your battery in no time
Thats why you unhook them when not in use.
you cant run a trolling motor on that junk
Thx for the heads up, but for like, like my box because I put fishfinder right in it. Plus fishing lures and terminal tackle.
