    Mount the transformers in an ammo can. Make sure the box is grounded for safety. Filling the box with mineral oil will provide better cooling for the transformers. You can even use high voltage insulator bushings for the output leads.

      You'd be surprised. In the US 120V 20A will easily run a dual-set no problems. You can get MUCH larger arcs though than they got in this video. They're missing the resonant capacitors on the 2KV output. 2 microwave transformers in sieres with resonant caps can easily do 2-3ft arc draws. Usually lasts like 10 seconds on 15A breakers and a couple minutes on 20A. Pretty fun stuff! I hope they add resonant caps on a future video. They also shoulda bolted the two together instead of isolating the one..still fun stuff either way xD

    You should put a clamp meter on the cable to see if the arc is effectively creating a "short circuit". Would explain why the transformer gets so warm.

    • @Speeder84XL
      @Speeder84XL 9 місяців тому +3

      Pretty much all arcs behave like short circuits for the transformer output. A ballast on the primary side is a must to keep the arc going for more than like a few seconds with a long "cool down period" before the next run. Especially when dealing with low frequency AC like this.
      Once the dielectric strength of the air is exceeded and the arc strikes - the resistance will drop to almost zero.
      If the electrodes are then moved apart (and stretching out the arc), it will go up as more power is needed to sustain the ionized air path.
      This could be used to limit current - but will only work for DC or high frequency AC (and even then it's not easy to manage, as the range between very low resistance and not being able to sustain the arc any more, is very small).
      With a 50 Hz sine wave (mains power) the resistance of the arc can't go up much at all, before it's extinguished at the zero crossings. So it will be either "close to short circuit conditions" or no arc at all.

    The initial arc length is determined by the 1000 v/mm rule. Once the arc is established, however, this is a plasma. A plasma is an excellent conductor. This is why you can draw out a much longer arc than the 1000 v/mm rule would seem to indicate. Once a plasma is established, the maximum arc length is determined by how much power you are putting into it, not the voltage.
    That blue stick needs to be an insulator otherwise you are risking your life.

    a much safer way of putting the transformers in series is reversed paralell. Then the core stays at earth potential and there is opposing voltages on the high voltage outputs. This way you do not add extra stress to the dielectric insulation on the primary windings

    try running mains voltage into the first primary and then run the secondary into the primary of the next transformer and then see what volatage you get on the output of the secondary of the second transformer. You can then add a third an so on, if the clearance and creepage are good enough not to arc over internaly.

    • @HighVoltageMadness

      It wont work because the inductance of the primaries is to low and it will overload the first transformer.

    • @Deleted-vd

    • @Speeder84XL
      @Speeder84XL 9 місяців тому

      @@wisdomoftheshadows Yes, but still quite good given the simplicity, just using those transformers.
      Higher voltages can be reached by putting a capacitor sin series with the outputs - that would indeed give even bigger arcs, while still keeping the circuit relatively simple
      The best would probably be to build a high power current regulated AC/DC converter instead, that outputs like 10 kV DC or something.
      Low frequency AC is not very efficient for generating long arcs, as they tend to go out at the zero crossings.
      DC or even high frequency AC gives much better arcs for the power input, compared to use 50 Hz directly from mains. But that would be a whole other project.

    Your electrical guy doesn't know what he's doing. You need to hook two microwave caps in series after the output of the transformer. Then you'll be able to draw plasma arcs 3-4 feet long instead of your measly 6 inches. Adding more and more transformers is barely increaing the voltage and is actually making the plasma ionization of the air weaker because the current is now lower.
