After playing this position a lot for a year, these details mean more now than they did then. Coming back and watching these videos again I'll be carrying a lot of details into my sparring this week. Deep well here.
Wow your details are amazing. I use spider gaurd every day. I've always kept my gaurd so wide and legs away from my body... always pushing then my training partners push my legs down... pretty much they destroy my spider gaurd... Literally I had this talk with a black belt from my academy and he said mike try the lasso and sleeve or lasso and collar... doing the same thing and expecting a different outcome is the definition of insanity.... your legs are so much closer to your body making it more difficult to pass your gaurd... just like inverting staying so tight that people can't pass your gaurd.... I see it now.... now I have to break bad habits and know when to push and when to stay tight. I almost gave up on spider gaurd.... I just needed to work smarter and harder. Thank you so much!
You guys who are giving a thumbs down should explain why you are doing that so the problem(s) can be addressed. Otherwise, that’s not cool if you are doing that just to be an ass, because the instruction is clearly superior to most instructionals on UA-cam.
this means Jons stuff is actually good! cause haters are gonna hate. and they can think what they want, i have yet to see anyone at feather pass his spider guard
I sometimes thumbs down stuff just to let the algorithm know that it was something I'm not interested in, especially if it was autoplayed to me. It's nothing personal. A 98% positive feedback rate is overwhelmingly good and the 2% could easily be explained by non-jiu jitsu players who have no idea what they just watched and aren't interested in it.
great tips! One other guard retention issue I have in spider guard is when they step back and pull my legs down, essentially forcing me to sit up (I guess it's the same way some people set up the toreando). I've also been struggling with the basic spider guard scissor/wheel sweep lately when my partner assumes a very strong posture and prevents me from rotating his shoulders at all (generally tall/strong people).
diabolic42090 so the move I showed in this video curling your feet out wide should help a lot stopping them from forcing you to sit up. The scissor spider sweep I will cover in a different video, but if they posture up a lot omoplata or change to collar sleeve then omoplata would be good options.
Hey bro if they start to sit you up butt scoot or skip ... Always hv the passers upper body bent over whatever control of grips you use... We as humans arent very mobile on our feet with the torso bent at 45 to 90 degrees.
That de la riva sweep at the end is gold! I play a lot of Lo guard & triangles so that sweep is something i’m gonna add when guys are being tight with their knee/elblow. Thanks! :)
This video reminds that I wanted to see your thoughts on guard pulling, i.e. the techniques you prefer. I have seen a lot of footage of yours where you slide into guard with a collar grip. I notice a lot of high level players doing that as well.
The most common break for that spider hook is walking over and placing your right knee on their calve/ankle and then popping it out. Are the spider hook retentions the same if they do that?
wufufufu Should have put that in the video I forgot! It’s actually the same counter, the bending in knee movement defense will work just the same. It completely blocks that pass if done properly.
great as always. do you have any tips for when they go to their knees and they just keep their posture straight up? I feel like I can never break them down low enough to close a triangle around them.
Shyam Tanna I prefer to play with the lasso shallow and low I rarely go through with the hook. You can I just don’t prefer it, feel like it harder to transition back or to other positions and easier to get suck with heavier opponents.
Hey John, Great channel. I am a smaller guy who has been attempting to use Spider guard as a way to help mitigate size from larger opponents. My question is how as a smaller guy (5ft 4 145lbs) implement spider guard on a larger opponent without getting crushed.(190+ lbs)? Thanks in advanced! great channel my dude!
I've been trying to hit this triangle set up but finding they suck their elbow in before I can jump my hips up. How do you stop them closing this space as soon as you bring the lasso leg out?
Xav R If they suck their elbow really tight you won’t be able to do the move. You will need to transition to another attack. I think I mentioned the overhead sweep in this video, but if not that’s a good one to try just put your right foot in their stomach and left de la riva hook in and try to take them over head. If they leave the elbow gap open you need to hip up fast and surprise them so they don’t close the elbow gap before you hit it.

Damn, I love the way he throws in that overhead sweep at the end like it’s nothing 😂. I’m literally lying and bed and said “wow” out loud.
The only Bjj channel that i make an effort to take notes.
Thank you!! This fixed my biggest problem with retaining the spider hook.
awesome details on the leg angles to prevent opponents grips or foot stomp
Always great Thomas. Do one Top level sweeps from the spider/lasso!
What a slick triangle. Thanks Jon!
Super nice. Much appreciated sir. Thanks.
Please do a full series on how to use the delaheva guard and thanks for this video
Love this detail. Gonna try this!

Probably because they hate getting stuck in spider guard.

thanks for taking the time to respond to so many people!
diabolic42090 no problem happy you give feedback!

that upside down face tho :) another excellent video

For the lasso you don't need it to have it wrapped around the arm and foot flex on his back.
Hami Abdullah no you don’t I actually don’t like playing it that way much because it’s much harder to transition fast to other positions.
that's a deep lasso, its better to control an opponent
Great stuff once again

What are some of your favourite flowing drills? Could you do a video on that? Thanks!
kevint18 I have a few drills I think our good for learning to transition all the guards together. Can post one of those soon.
really good one!!
thanks bro!
Keep coming with these great content

wufufufu I will include in next spider video I shoot.
what about when they posture up in the spider guard?
Thanks
great as always. do you have any tips for when they go to their knees and they just keep their posture straight up? I feel like I can never break them down low enough to close a triangle around them.
Mauricio Gonzalez hey Mauricio! Yeah I think In that situation omoplata is a great option also switching to collar sleeve then doing the omoplata.
Thanks for the response, I'll try it out tomorrow!
Amazing details! How shallow do you recommend the lasso? I don’t go to deep. Is that sufficient?
Shyam Tanna I prefer to play with the lasso shallow and low I rarely go through with the hook. You can I just don’t prefer it, feel like it harder to transition back or to other positions and easier to get suck with heavier opponents.
Thanks bro. Great, I'll continue as is then. Not fun getting stuck with bigger dudes!! When will you be at Elliot's? I will make sure I'm there.
Shyam Tanna June 30th is the seminar! See you there!
how do you stop the "throw-by" pass from spider
Great video. Do you ever play spider guard where you are gripping the collar on one side and have a sleeve grip and spider hook on the other side?
kilsooya yeah I call it the Romulo guard after Romulo barrel. I love it great attacks and very useful for transitioning.
JonThomasBJJ When you get a chance would you be able to make a video on that type of spider guard as well?
kilsooya absolutely!

You. Need. More. Subscribers.
Thanks so much buddy, I know it will take off eventually, just got to keep putting in my work.
My spider always gets leg dragged (i play lasso/spider & dlr/spider) any way to properly to prevent it?
I find the cross step defense a good last resort to the leg drag
👍👍👍👍👍
Nice, nice..verry nice ! Tks, rgds from Srbija 👍👍👍
Wow really 11 thumbs dwn... Why though.... There was nothing to show causation of the technique and concepts shown...
