I was stationed near London a couple of times in the 90s but I never experienced many of the things you’ve introduced me to.
It sure was a beautiful day. The weather almost perfect. Thank you so much.

I used to go fishing near those forts with my brother. On a nice day it's a beautiful place. They are like a man made reef and home to many different things. It must of been a very different place for the soldiers who manned them in the war! Always enjoy your wonderful adventures and finds.

Thank you Broderick. Yes, I agree, it must have been so different to actually be on those forts and to be stationed on them. We are so lucky that we can visit them in completely different circumstances.

Back in the day, as a young teenager I loved Radio 390 which I believe broadcast from these forts...it seems a long time ago now, but leaving aside the rather staid Radio Luxemburg, it seems incredible that until the pirate stations (early sixties - 1962? - to 1967 I think) there was no UK radio station broadcasting to youngsters, and no real UK radio outlet for pop music...

Hi, yes, you're absolutely right. One of the stations was radio 390. Those were the days! (apparently). x

That's interesting; I once worked with a bloke who lived on Sheppey, and he told a story that I'm still not sure was a joke: he alleged that immediately after the war a captured German U boat was being towed up the Medway and all the blokes on Sheppey tried to surrender to it!

What a great adventure, I certainly hope they are able to restore these historical forts. I can't watch something like this without wondering what the walls would say if they could talk. It must have been a moving experience.

@@nicolawhitemudlark I've read a little of the history of these forts and conditions could be very tough at times. During bad weather they sometimes went for extended periods without resupply and ran short of food and water. One soldier stationed there went mad and jumped to his death. His colleagues had the ghastly sight of seeing his body carried backwards and forwards past the fort as the tide ebbed and flowed.

Such an incredible amount of history there. I could see myself living in one of the towers isolated from everyone else. The sound of the water and the view of the glorious sunrises and sunsets would be enough to keep me sane. Spectacular views during the voyage there and back. Haha ! Yes. And i was a reader of the famous Classics Illustrated version of War of the Worlds, not the HG Wells. Fascinated by all the history around the Thames Estuary. There is a story about the Pirate Radio stations on one of these forts, but took Place in later 60s ... It is found in 'No Sleep til Canvey', by Will Birch . which describes all the Pub Rock bands, some of whom came from towns near Southend, Canvey Island and other spots in the Southeast. Out of Print but easy to find online. Hugely entertaining if that is your sort of thing

Fantastic. Two of my favourite Utubers come together 👍❤️....I grew up around, on and in the Thames area and have visited these sites ( Sailing) many times. Sometimes not so pleasant when it’s dark or foggy and blowing a Hooley 😳.
Have you visited the marshy islands opposite Queensborough landing Jetty ? As a kid I used to row there with my Brother from my Dads boat to go Mudlarking ! We found soooo much stuff...Poison bottles, clay pipes, Toothpaste pots etc etc I believe it was used as a dump and I certainly associated with the old Prison of war galleons that were moored up near by.
The finds were all at the waterline as the banks eroded into the water.
Love your videos and would love to get back out and Mudlark again one day . All the best Nicola 👍

Coincidentally I was watching BBC First because a new series was announced and it's called Whitsable Pearl, the first episode they go out to sea and arrive at a boat, in another camera shot I suddenly saw these old forts, I thought hey interesting but the strange thing is you can't find them on google maps and i was also confused because of the radio pirates of yesteryear like radio sutch which later became radio city but they didn't come from the red sands forts but from the Shivering Forts, I always thought they were one and the same but now it turns out that they were built in two places in the estuary of Thames and to my astonishment several, one of which was blown up in 1967.
It is that I found a map on the internet with the correct places where these forts are and have stood, so that gave some overview of exactly how it worked with all those forts, he still finds it fascinating.
Nice video thanks for sharing, best regards from the Netherlands! (I have often been to the UK by train and ferry HvH and Dunkirk DFDS and of course Calais P&O)

Wow, Nicola, you've excelled yourself with this Adventure! Wonderful - and how blessed were you with the weather? AMAZING! Gorgeous photography and helpful research - just fascinating. Thank you very much... PS: Music credits? Perfect (Bit of the Matt Bellamy's about the piano!) Perfect collaboration - can't wait to see more... Have you ever been over to West Mersea? I would think there would be some good mudlarking over there? Cheers, great stuff! 👍🎬🥂😊⛵

Excellent video Nicola loved your narration of all the forts. Looked like a great day for sailing. I love history but I never knew those forts where there. Guess I need to learn more. As always be safe 😊

Still catching up with your back catalogue. I was born in Leigh on sea and went to school in Westcliff on sea in the 1960's and 1970's. We were always aware of the forts and could see them in the distance from Southend. I used to listen to the pirate radio broadcasts (which I seem to remember was not legal and the BBC (?) used to try and jam the signal). In the 1960's at school we used to hope the SS Richard Montgomery would blow up, which would damage the school and let us have some time off. Not sure we entirely thought that one through though! I've been lucky enough to travel out to the forts by boat on more than one occasion, but I've never seen the Thames as calm as the day you visited. Thank you for this video, and all your others. I hope that 2023 is kind to you.
