The exercise in putting the gold leaf on in that application would make your hair fall out. I can't imagine doing something like this! The old upholstery looked like it was silk. It never ceases to amaze me on how someone will do a sloppy job in restoring an antique piece of furniture. This is one of the main reasons i watch the channels that i do. You guys know what you're doing and do it well because you take the time to learn the proper techniques. If my grandmother was alive still she would have enjoyed this video immensely! The reason for that is because she started doing upholstery as her way of paying the bills. when i was born i spent so much time at her house just sitting there watching her work in fascination. It is an amazing thing to see!
    I just wish she was able to see you work. She passed just shy of her 101st birthday. God rest her soul. She did this work for just over 80 years before she stopped.
    This chair turned out absolutely stunning. I hope it goes home with someone who takes special good care of her.

      With a staple gun and hot glue?

    • @elizabethmorsund4512
      @elizabethmorsund4512 10 місяців тому +3

      I mean, obviously he was not trying to do a historically accurate repair, just trying to get the chair stable and looking more or less historically accurate. And he was doing the work for free. So I can see using staples rather than tacks, as they are faster and hold about as well. (Maybe? They probably rust faster, and possibly cut through the fabric in time?) Now, the hot glue most casual crafters might use would probably not hold up over time, and that trim might peel off fairly easily. But there are lots of different formulations of hot glue, and some are very durable, though I don’t know if they would be considered “archival”. Certainly hot glue sticks like that would not be historically accurate. But, he did achieve the goal of restoring the chair to working order and making it beautiful.

    What a beautiful result for a delightful chair design! Your skill level suits the original design. May I ask the type of wood it was made from? It's a delicate-looking chair, but such a deceptively strong design! Your excellent skills lead to the beautiful results. I especially like how you created a polisher for the legs with a drill! Brilliant! My only disappointment: I wish you could have used a fabric similar to the original silk, which, in my humble opinion, suits the delicacy of the chair. I love how the old materials are ecologically friendly, just requiring a much more skilled artist. Thank you for sharing.

    I broke the rules and voted for 2 channels. This competition was really about comparing apples to oranges to bananas to pears. All channels have excellent content. But this restoration and John's Furniture were on another level and I couldn't choose between them. I am a huge fan of Transcend Furniture,, Angie regularly turns dross into gold. And she is a solid craftsperson when it comes to repairing damage, but not on the same level as the other three. She has a different business model and works on a different type of furniture. John's Furniture: Wow. The whole package. Trained from youth by an expert. She wove a chair back and bottom! AT Restoration: I have come across this channel before. Haven't really followed it because it's a type of furniture and restoration that you just don't see much in North America. And what he does is so complex! Amazing restoration. Like John's, such a high skill level. Finally, Fixing Furniture. You can learn so much about repairing joinery on this channel. The most informative video in the competition, but probably suffered in the judging because the finish was left for the customer to do so the end result wasn't "pretty". Both Fixing Furniture and Transcend Furniture Gallery are great teaching channels for people with ordinary skills and shops. John's and AT's show what seasoned professionals can do. Long story short, I am so glad they had this competition. I was under the weather today, so watched all 4 videos back to back. Great content!

      I think all channels did pretty hard work. Some chars are just so modest that you even don´t notice them but the work can be still complicated.

    A single 'golden' chair might be ok for a hallway piece as decor but my guess is this chair would have been part of a [dining?] set for either the ridiculously wealthy or royalty. Beautiful resto!

    I was really hoping you'd use a similarly flowery light colored silk as there was initially on the chair. Other than that, it looks like you like your ambient music as much as I do 🙂

      Me too, the pale silk was much prettier for a delicate chair.

    I wish I could give more than one like. This work is gorgeous and I like that it was taken from a Russian palace - such history. It’s amazing how much work went into just the upholstery of this piece. Although I like the end result of this chair more, I have to give my vote to Trena for the work she did weaving the cane. I will add your channel to my subscriptions.
