- French President Emmanuel Macron has defended his shock decision to dissolve parliament and call elections.
He said calling elections was the only republican option and urged French voters to come together and “say no to the extremes”.
Macron’s decision to call two rounds of elections in June and July has left the Conservative republicans deeply divided.

Putting politics aside for a minute, who is motivated to show up to vote for an immature crybaby throwing a fit because his people didn't get elected in an unrelated election? He is threatening to put his government in chaos one month before his country hosts the Olympic games.
Macron's party is now called "Renaissance." So, let's say you a leader in "The Republicans" (Chirac's old party), the Socialist Party, or any of the smaller left wing French parties. Marine Le Pen's National Party claims about 40% of the vote. Macron's party has 20%. Now both Le Pen and Macron are making the rounds trying build a coalition of more than 50%. Traditionally, every other party would keep Le Pen out of power by refusing to join a coalition with her. They prefer to join into any other coalition. That's how the rest of the parties have been keeping the far right out of power.
Now, Le Pen can work each potential political partner in turn asking them if they will help her to save the Olympics. She has nothing to lose. She is not in power nor has she ever been in power. If the Olympics fail, it is not her fault. Since Macron will still be President while the Olympics are failing, it will be his fault.
