1968 Kenmore Alphabet Washer - Cycle D, Permanent Press

- This time we are going to see what this washer does on a permanent press cycle. I don't really have anything that would naturally need to be washed in this cycle so since I just spent the day at the beach I have a bunch of towels that need washing. So even though towels are the last thing you would want to wash in a Perm Press cycle it's what I have and at least we will get to see what the machine does.
We also get to see the machine go out of balance and set off the buzzer, and I run an extra regular speed spin cycle after the main wash cycle is complete.
Enjoy the show.
Nice demo of the permanent press cycle just as I remembered it from my aunts alphabet Washer that I used many times. Nice to see this model washer is still around and so is my aunt she’s 95.
God Bless your aunt. Bet she's got a lot of stories to tell.
Those out of balance buzzers really save the machine from beating itself up. My 79 Kenmore had one and scared me one time. Wish the newer washers had them
That was the best cycle yet! Wow, does a partial drain, then agitates WHILE it refills. Then it stops, finishes refilling, and continues agitating. That cool down part of the cycle is something else!
My older Whirlpool has a Permanent Press Cycle, and indeed it does say cool down, but in no way does it take on more water, it just pauses. My dad's old Whirlpool belt drive, now that one has got a few cool down cycles on the timer for the different washes, but I can't say I've ever seen any of those cycles run, so I don't know if it still has this kind of awesomeness built-in.
The best part is it does that partial drain and refill thing twice.
@@tallboyyyy Yes!
Does that Whirlpool have a Knit cycle in which it does a single cool-down, as opposed to a double cool-down in Permanent Press?
@@tvtimetravel I believe my dad's Whirlpool does have a Knit cycle.
@@jaykay18 Those first came in 1973. It was a separate cycle from Gentle which had no cool-down.
Nothing like the Kenmore Cool down! Wish they still made them like that today!! I recently retired my 1961 Lady Kenmore
Do you still have it ?
@@patcola7335 no, I finally let it go last year when I moved. It needed parts I could not locate.
@@glennjackamonis97 Did your machine still have the bulkier rounded cabinet or was it squared off by 61? You certainly got your money's worth out of a 60-year-old machine.
It had the rounded edges with the metal strip in the front. Great machine I hate the new ones!!!!
There's nothing like a pink wooo wooo.
This is truly a gem! Thank you so much for posting, I've been looking all over for this machine. My Grandmother had one for the longest and we finally replaced in the mid 90's after my Grandfather got tired of fixing. We had the matching large hamper door dryer too. She kept the dryer until it was time to replace as well. Miss those machines!
One of these days I have to try out the wash n wear/permanent press cycle on my new 1963 Whirlpool Imperial Mark XII belt drive washer. Used the super wash and gentle cycle and those cycles seem to work great so far.
I'd like to see it.
I’ve noticed on certain belt drive Kenmore washers-the off-balance buzzer trips when the load is even a little off-balance-and some-they don’t trip until the last minute-just before the tub bangs against the sides of the cabinet.
I love the sound of that off balance buzzer, Mine always went off when I washed jeans!!! Thanks for the video TallBoy and have a good night!!!
The guy I bought it from said it went off a lot while he had it. For me it's only just started going off within the last few loads. Prior to that it was running perfect and not going out of balance.
@@tallboyyyy My Mom's Kenmore did that a lot when she first got it back in 1983 and a lot of times the load wasn't even off balance... We had called Sears for service on the washer and when he came, all he did was take the back cover off and bend the balance buzzer bar back a little away from the tub and that did the trick!!! He said that at the time of installing this piece at the factory, this bar tends to get bent a little towards the tub when installing and just the slightest off balance will trigger it off!!! After that my Mother never had anymore problems with the washer's off balance buzzer unless the load was severely off balance!!!
I heard that the early ones had an off-balance switch/buzzer with a wire trip arm-the later ones used the plastic red trip arms-I also heard they were bad to get bent. I think tallboyyy should make the off-balance buzzer trip arm adjustment as Robert suggested-they were bad to get bent.
Nice video. These machines were a beast and were built to do the job it was designed for. I do think that one of those pulley sounds like it needs to be serviced because it's very loud. Wonderful washer by the way.
I agree with you on the pulley noise. I plan on doing some detective work to see exactly where the noise is coming from. Can't tell if it's something loose or if a bearing is failing.
Permanent press cycles used more water due to the "cool down" feature. Partial drain of wash water and cold water added to help prevent wrinkles, (a gimmick that was abandoned! after a few years!)
I will never forget how ours made this weird growling noise during spin cycle which sounded like digging a screwdriver through a cardboard box. Scared the crap out of me (I was 9) Also, our agitator top had a built in fabric softener dispenser
@ Tallboy...
The matching dryer to this washer is nice too.
Solid-State Sensor in the drum, Wrinkle-Guard (I think, but not sure), Lighted Drum, and Full-Width Door.
Nice Dryer!
Two or three steps down below the Lady Kenmore (which was the top of the line).
👍🏾👍🏾

I've seen a quick glimpse of the dryer on someones video of a wash-in somewhere. The video was showing all the different machines the collector had and the dryer was one of them although I don't believe they had the washer.
Yes the dryer has the Wrinkle Guard, I had the full set in Avocado back in the 90s
Make sure the snubber isn't worn down. That should help with keeping it balanced .
My grandparents had a whirlpool which is the same as your kenmore there’s was a 1969 or 70
Very nice machine! Definite work horse. Could that noise your hearing be coming from the belt itself? That sound reminds me of the belt sound you hear on a car that needs to be dressed
The belt may be loose because when I got the machine it would squeal when it went into spin mode. I do have a new belt for it but don't have the time or space to replace it right now.
My favorite part of this washer is just clean clothes
i wish seller has a matching dryer and you got a 1968 matching pair
That would be nice but I don't really have room for this washer but it was too cool and inexpensive to pass up. Adding a dryer to the deal would have forced me to take a pass on it.
Not quite enough water for the load size, the machine is not turning the towels over, it's pulling and tugging on them.
It sounds like my grandparents old washer
What, are you doing ; your
Going to break the clothes washer, don't do
That !!
There is a reset on the water level just for that purpose.
