Lolol I didn't realize with heartbreak comes anxiety and lack of sleep for me. Her mentioning the middle of the night and staying up at 4am is so relatable. It's crazy how bad it gets. Hope everyone is doing okay. I wouldn't wish this pain on anyone
This song sits differently when it's dedicated to your dad. I know it has the lyrics in love and the one and in the middle of the night I can feel you again.. but none of those lines have to be romantic in meaning even if they were written that way. And that is the beauty of music and Taylor's skills. When I hear this song from her.. I hear the lines like we might still be in love and think of the love between a father and daughter.. the line.. you might still be the one.. I think of my dad being the man to raise me and be the man I look up too.. and the line sometimes in the middle of the night I can feel you again.. I picture my dad carrying me to bed late at night when I had fell asleep.. but unfortunately he wasn't a better man. But I am thankful that Taylor gave me a song I can release my feelings too. Thank you Taylor.

My 28 year marriage is ending and this song sums it up well. I stayed hoping the magic would return, but ultimately, it never did and I walked away. He told me he hadn’t been happy for a long time. I wish he had told me that rather than treating me the way he did. Sad thing is I still miss him.
@@evonnesmith6927 Sorry I'm going off tangent here, but reading your comment made me feel lots of things as it really hits close to home. My parents went through the same thing and it deeply hurt me. You've absolutely made the right choice to walk away after waiting and hoping and you should believe that yourself. Relationships in the end of the day are meant to make both parties happy and better, and when they're not doing that, they're not worth it. 28 years are a long time for that person to take root in your heart and grow and grow until all you can feel and love is them, but know that you can and still will find happiness out there, people who will love and value you like how you deserve to be treated. Everyone deserves what's best for them and even though it might have been magic in the beginning, sometimes they're simply just not the right person. It's better to realise and walk away, than staying in a fizzled out, draining marriage. It takes an immense amount of courage to leave them and turn a new page and what you've managed to do is so respectable. I only wish my mum has done the same. All the best wishes to you :)

Actually, I am far more impressed by her musicianship. She is a genius melodist. There are lots of people who could write lyrics like this, but very few who could write so many brilliant melodies.. and harmonise them so well.. song after song. Having said that, I feel this song's lyrics are actually some of her best. Because she wrote it for others to sing it is far less self-orientated than most of her lyrics from other songs.. and I think they work beautifully because it is easier for the listener to identify with the message. I am really impressed she wrote them when she was only 16 (I think) before she could have really known from personal experience about the themes of the song.

Then I listen to Taylor’s Better Man and hear the woman who found the strength, courage, and confidence to take control knowing the best thing for her is to leave, despite loving the man and having done all she could to make things work…. But HE was unwilling/unable to change to be a better man. Love these songs. And listen to them often back-to-back.

That song got me through some rough times. It took a while to accept that the mask he wore early wasn't really who he was. I fell in love with someone that didn't exist. I really wish my parents were better people. I've never had my heart broken before, so i didn't think I'd be able to feel the album very deeply, but heartbreaks don't have to be romantic, do they? Gods truly, I wish that things were better, that your love for me was better, that we were better, that all of us were better. And if it's not too much to ask for, i hope one day we get better.

I spent all my time under my parents' roof wishing they were better people. When I finally got out of there, I was terribly terribly lost because the thing about toxicity is, you don't know how to be your own person. I was working late one night, all alone in a high rise in downtown Atlanta when I heard this song for the first time. It had been almost ten years since my husband walked out on me & our two kids. The song absolutely gutted me & I cried my eyes out. I still sometimes grieve for what could have been, what might have been, if he'd been a better man. Different than finding the strength to leave a bad relationship - but the grief over the "magic" parts & the "what ifs" is the same. Incredibly powerful song.
