    When a "Mastertier" shows it, everything looks easy.
    Gotta make me some of these.

    That's a useful tip on separating the tail fibers, thanks! 👍

    I think I am a certified fan! I watch your video's over and over. I haven't got a lot of imagination for tying flies because I never have gotten to use any of them. I get some ideas when I watch other tiers and either don't have what they are using, or I don't like a material they use I substitute a material I like better. I have learned the behavior of each of the materials putting them through the bath tub. All the best, Sean

    Gorgeous sulpher dun , excellent tie with a touch of Petitjean and a twist of McPhail. Will tie a few of these for sure. Thx Davie.

    I did enjoy it, Davie... thank you.
    At the end, mentioning how bright and easy this fly is to see on the water, you referenced Yellow Sallies being similar visually. I've been looking for a good Yellow Sallie fly for a while now. If you have a tie you like and could make the time, I'd like to see it.

    In John Goddard's "Waterside Guide" he states that the yellow may dun is not taken by trout. I have found the trout on the river Monnow to be ignorant of this and they take them freely. I look forward to trying this pattern on them. I usually just use a scaled up Tup's Indispensable, tied either normally of Klinkhammer style. It will be nice to try something different for a change, thank you!

    Thank you Davie!! I definitley enjoyed this video - really appreciate your detailed commentary. Interesting techniques you are using with the CDC feathers for the body and thorax, gives a nice soft result (I would have defalted to using coarser pheasant-tail fibers). Will have to try some CDC bodies. ATB! Hank

    Might you be willing to share what your vise is that you use, Mr. McPhail? I'm not familiar with the jaw design, it escapes my memory of all I'm accustomed to. Nice flies sir, A talent I'm trying to master with your help, thank you.

      Hi Thomas Baer,
      I use a Law vise which was made by a gentleman called Lawrence Waldron but unfortunately he has stopped making them...I have attached a link to a site that has more information and photos which you may like to see...I'm glad you enjoy watching the videos and the flies i tye..

    Hi Davie,
    Like many others, let me compliment you on your instructional videos. They are very easy to follow and even relaxing. I do have a technical question for you. What determines when you tie the tail fibers on the hook. I've noticed that in some flies the cerci is one of the first things tied on, but on some flies (like your Lark & Grey) you tie the wings first before attaching the tail. I'm just learning how to tie flies and any "pearls of wisdom" would be appreciated.
    Best wishes,
    Miguel

    Hi Davie, beautiful fly! You say it's simple but you tie so gracefully. You seemed to really enjoy tying that fly too! Your dyed materials are icing on the cake. I was going to ask if you happened to see any of the ASFI Expo held this past weekend. I've been following a tyer I saw on UA-cam,Eunan Hendron. He's a very nice man, skilled and willing to help the novice, just like you. All the best Davie, thanks again!

    Really nice looking fly as usual Davie. I love to see you tie. I try to emulate you as much as I can. I have developed my own ways to make some things work better for me as well. You are the champ though. I have developed a little of my own style. Also I have many more materials to substitute than when I started. All the best to you and yours. God bless. Sean ( I have been given a huge bunch of turkey pointer quills in many colors. Is there anything particular that can be used for. I have used some of the fibers as nymph and dry fly bodies. Looking for more ideas. Thanks again for sharing. Sean)

      @DavieMcPhail  8 років тому

      Hi Sean,
      The more you tye the more you will develop your own style and this is why we all enjoy watching other tyers as we all have our own wee tricks...I have some turkey points and what I use them for is making bodies on nymphs..I'm glad you enjoyed the video and I'm sure you'll be tying the Yellow May as it's a good pattern and style that can be tyed in any colour combination and size to suit the flies coming off...

    great looking fly the wing shape is just beautiful ,you make it look so easy,but I will give it a go,just wondering does the dying process not affect the floatability of the c dc ? thanks for another great looking fly.

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  8 років тому

      Hi George,
      They will float at first but if you use the floatant you like on your flies then it will last far longer as I'll do this even on lies that I've tyed with natural CDC as again this will keep the fly dry for longer...I'm glad you enjoyed the video...

      Thanks for answering so quickly Davie. Sorry to be so persistent, but I wonder if you just dunk the flies into the liquid and then let them air dry, or whether you apply somehow sparingly with fingers or soft brush? Many thanks.

      Hi Alms Mine,
      I have attached links to the floatant that I prefer to use on my dry flies, I have used these for more than 30 years. The oil does need to dry overnight to be at it's best but the silicone needs to be lightly applied,. It comes with a small pad inside and what I do is to warm it with a hairdryer until is soaks up the silicone then all I have to do is rub my thumb on it which will give you enough to coat your fly...I hope this is of some help to you and don't worry about coming back to me...

      Hi David,
      Cul De Canard (CDC) (French for "Duck bottom") are the feathers from the back of a duck directly around the preen gland.

      +Davie McPhail thank you. beautiful fly. I make sort of flies from available materials at the moment, with my home made tools and vice, they are, of course very nieve but I have fun and am learning.
