  • Roland BN-20 Compare to White Toner Transfers & Sublimation Printing
In this video we are going to talk to you about the differences between three extremely popular printer sets, which is the DigitalHeat FX printers, the Roland VersaStudio BN-20, and the Sawgrass Virtuoso line that comes in both the 500 and the 1000.
One of the most popular things done with all of these printers is going to be printing t-shirts, and it's really important to understand the limitations and the capabilities of these printers before you pick which one is best for you.
So let's go ahead and talk about two things that are really important. That's going to be the colors of t-shirts you can print on and the type of materials you can print on.
Both the DigitalHeat FX System and the BN-20 are going to have similar capabilities where you can print on light color and dark color t-shirts, so from white to black and just about everything in between, and the materials you can print on. So you can go on cotton, polyester, blends, and kind of everything in between there as well.
See how the Roland BN-20 Transfers work in this video: • Roland BN-20 Print & C...
The Sawgrass system is a sublimation system, which means you're just going to be printing on light colored garments, and you're also just going to be printing on polyester garments, preferably sublimation certified polyester garments for the optimal results.
Now the next thing we want to talk about is a look, feel, longevity. These are questions that almost everybody asks. And the first question that I'll answer on that is that if you take care of your t-shirts, no matter what system you're printing on, so if you're printing on the DigitalHeat FX or the Roland or the Sawgrass, if you're printing a light or dark colored garments, if you're washing according to wash instructions, your longevity is going to be great.
Learn more about our most popular DigitalHeat FX Systems, the OKI 8432 and the UNINET iColor 560 in this video: • DigitalHeat FX System ...
But there is going to be a difference in how it actually does feel and how the longevity actually is when it comes to just the actual look of the transfer and how you're applying it.
When we're talking about the DigitalHeat FX and the Roland BN-20, these are both an adhesive based transfer. So we talked about earlier that we print on top of something and there's adhesive on the back, and then we are sticking that to the t-shirt, essentially, in so many words. It's almost like a sticker, but it's chemically bonded.
Watch us create a a t-shirt with sublimation printing in this video: • How To Sublimate a Shi...
And with that, there is going to be a feel to that. We are adding something on top of the t-shirt. Even though it's a very, very thin and very light, there is going to be a texture to that. And the more of that you put onto the shirt, the more of that texture you'll feel.
The difference with sublimation that we talked about before, it's not being adhered to the garment, it's becoming a part of your garment, it's becoming a part of the t-shirt. It's inside the shirt.
Therefore there is no feel, there is nothing on top of the shirt. All you're doing is adding color to the shirt and that's a molecular level thing, so you don't feel this at all. You will never have a crack or a break or any type of adhesion issue at all, as long as you're using the right type of shirt, a sublimation certified type of the shirt, and you're putting the right colors on the shirt, the longevity, that's great.
Really when it comes down to it, all three of these systems are a great investment for your shop. And you might want to just have two of these systems or all three of these systems. It really depends on what you're going to do, how you're going to do it. The best way to get that answer is to go to coldesi.com/ and live chat with one of our pros!

When I first started my business 14 years ago I primarily did vehicle wraps and store fronts. Allot of vinyl work, but we have adapted with supply and demand. Being able to offer your existing customers different services creates continuous business. We went from a customer placing an order once a year verse every 2-3 months.
Our success is based on diversifying our offered services. By having multiple options to produce the same products also gives you flexibility to pick and choose when to use each method. By not being limited to one option you can choose which method is the best print quality, which is the fastest and factor in profitability.
The T-Shirt Business is a Huge market!!!
You just have to distinguish your self as a print shop because now everyone with a cricket thinks they are a print company… lol

First things first, absolutely the best video i've seen yet comparing the three systems that you compared. And i've been watching lots and lots of youTube videos. Big huge thumps up. I've been considering getting into t-shirt making as a hobby and or a side business hustled then see where it goes from there. First I was looking into the DTG printers but quickly canned that idea due to the cost and maintenance of those things. Then I was looking into sublimation but don't want to be limited to white and polyester shirts only. Then i was looking at the white toner printer option, more in my price range and little to no waste or maintenance. Next i was considering the vinyl cutter machines like the cricut and the silhouette cameo machines, these are probably the cheapest way to start even though i'm not a big fan of having to do the weeding thing but i guess the weeding process isn't that bad depending on what your making. But that has limitations as far as doing multiple colors. Then just today i came across the Roland BN-20 and fell in love as it offers not only the ability to do t-shirts but stickers and signs with not much limitation on size on signs. I think the BN-20 is now my top choice. Is there any other system that I may be missing that won't cost an arm and a leg

Thanks Kevin! For t-shirts I think this is it. You're other options on the cutter side is a professional version of the cricut - those will do one color at a time. colmanandcompany.com/cutnpress.html But your next step is probably visiting one of our websites and chatting with a pro there. coldesi.com

great video and great explanation of all three of these printers. I've been doing Sublimation for a while, and while I love that ultimately the image is printed into the material, I just don't like the limitation of needing 100% white/polyester for the best results...neither do my customers. Next, I have always thought the White toner printer (digital heat, OKI, Uninet), would be the best for me...producing full color images to be applied to any kind of fabric (color/material). However, I've heard the software to create the images is a little complex and if not done right (rasterizing for example), the image will not print correctly...I have to research that a little more.
as for the BN-20, it's another printer that I loved loved. I've really love what eco solvent printers can do...the ONLY thing I dont like is that ultimately, the image transfer is a cut out, therefore, the image will have to have defined edges...like, if you see at 6:50, the Digital heat printer printed out an image that had "splattered effect" edges...I don't think the BN-20 could do that...like, it would printed, but there would still be white vinyl visible...im not even sure if im explaining that correctly. Either way, it's hard finding the perfect solution...may need to visit Direct To Film options ;)

Dye sublimation works by applying heat and pressure which causes the ink to transform to a gas. When the gas cools it bonds within the fibers of polyester fabrics or coatings. It also realizes its best colors after the sublimation process.
Self weeding HTV makes a great sticker material. Run it through many kinds of laser printers. You should carry the Uninet iColor dye sublimation laser printers. They also have toners for UV, clear, security (with handheld detectors), CMYKW, metallic colors. You can hot swap the toners during a print job. The company also sells slitters for making custom cut rolls or sheets of stickers. As well as other machines for spooling your prints to rolls which can be used inside a variety of sticker dispensers from cardboard to mechanical. Their machines also have the A-B two step process of printing dye sublimation to the Step A material and then using the Step B adhesive to bond it to a garment or other type of material.
Sawgrass uses a gel sublimation type of "ink". It may last longer than inkjet, may not clog as easily between uses, may not require a weekly print to prevent clogged print heads or ink lines. But that life span of about 9 months from the date of manufacture puts it at odds with a laser printer. Laser printers don't get clogged print heads, don't have ink lines to get clogged, they can go months or years between prints without issue to the machine or the quality of the print. And they don't require you to use your own ink to "clean" them.
Now inkjets have all of these problems. You have to use them frequently to prevent clogged print heads, clogged ink lines, to clean them you have to use your own ink to purge the print heads, you have to print at least once weekly for preventive maintenance, if the ink isn't pigment based then it will easily smear or run off the page if it gets the littlest bit wet...like if someone sneezes on it or spills something on it. High humidity also makes it more difficult or even impossible to get a good print out of an inkjet. Inkjets have the problem of over saturation causing a wavy look to the page after depositing too much ink.
For any of these prints you can use them on a Brother Scan N Cut to cut out intricate fussy designs. They are aimed at the hobbyist but have mats that handle materials up to 12x24 inches with up to 3mm thickness. Scan N Cuts have a built in 600 dpi optical color scanner that is used mostly to create custom cuts, to align the loaded files so that you can get the most out of your material, no need for registration marks or crop marks, it has a plotter feature as well, can be used with after market products for engraving soft & thin metals, leathers, fabrics, card stock, plastic sheets, flexible magnets, etc. I use my 125 SDX to make custom-made magnetic jigsaw puzzles with an embedded design. The embedded design can have pieces smaller than 1/4 inch. I make my puzzles as 1,000-30,000 piece puzzles cut from letter sized flexible magnetic sheets.
I can do almost all of the design, editing, and such from the cutter itself as it has a built in computer. Is uses a 5 inch color touch screen display that you can use with the included stylus or your finger tip to control. You can use the internal storage or attach a USB Flash Drive for file storage. You can scan with it too at up to 12x24 inches (12x12 for my model). You can save files to your Windows or Apple PC over USB 2.0 cable, via the built in wi-fi radio modem, or even send it to the web for its online software. The online software is a bit clunky but it lets you create, edit, retrieve your projects from a smartphone, Apple or Android tablet PC. There are plenty of cool ways to augment prints from the three expensive machines shown in this video with the Scan N Cut.
Scan N Cuts are superior to the BN-20/A in the fact that it automatically determines the depth for the blade, cut pressure, cut speed. Granted it isn't as fast as cutting materials. The combination of the scanner and Auto blade sensor with the other features this makes up for that. Oh, and you can cut vinyl rolls up to 72 inches long from the optional feed roller. About $400 for the 125 SDX.

Hey Tomasz -what do you mean by so expensive? It's all pretty amazing, commercial quality equipment that you can actually make money with. There ARE cheaper ways to make a custom t-shirt, for example, but the price for what these machines can do is more than fair. If you don't have the budget - that's perfectly understandable - we've got cutters and smaller sublimation printers - there are ways you can spend less for sure, just not getting the same results
