As someone who just recently started sewing, I am sad that I didn’t get to watch Nancy Zieman when she was on PBS. But since learning about her and her legacy, I love to watch her on UA-cam. She is a wealth of knowledge. Learning about her “right fit measurement” was amazing.
Knoxville TN here I am 77. Have needed a sewing table for a long time but really really need one now. I have decided not to do alterations anymore and just do quilting. Need to make lap quilts for family. I can handle that size good. I don’t have a quilting machine. It would be nice but would want other things. I have had 3 neck surgeries, 2 back surgeries, left ankle surgery, and right knee replacement. The knee surgery has changed a lot of things sewing wise. Table chair need to be higher. I only have used 4 or 6 foot tables. You have to use what works. Yes I want I want I want but I’m thankful for what I have. If you ever have one That is really missed up I would be interested as long as the machine area goes up and down. It will mostly have table with fabric on it any. Way. Thank you thank you guys. Only found your site about 3 months ago. Love how you explain items and give do and don’t details. Like your t-shirts and logo too.
Great advice T. I'd love a cabinet with more space to the left and back for machine quilting. I have a older horn. Then I bought a new Viking 95Q. It barely fits inside the hole. As a result, the needle position is not centered where it should be. It's doable for now but I can definitely tell it's not optimal for comfort. So, the only thing I would add is also measure the sewing machine and ensure it fits properly inside the cabinet hole with room to spare.
How about space behind your sewing machine for your pieced quilt to go without falling off the table and pulling. Can you also talk about the sewing chairs. I get a backache after an hour of sewing.
Height of sewing surface is important in an other way. For we who are vertically impared. A chair can be raised to put you at a comfortable level with your machine but if your feet then don't reach the floor, you're in trouble. Keep you knee to floor measurement in mind also.
I changed from a cabinet to a sit stand desk when I bought a high end embroidery machine and a serger. Checked new cabinets and the position of the larger machine was too far to the left so I could not sit in front of the needle. The bed of any serger is taller than a sewing machine; ergonomically it needs to be on a lower surface than the sewing machine, so those side tables are way too high if the sewing machine is at the right height. If you buy a sit stand desk make sure it goes low enough for the serger, I got an E7 base from Flexisoft on sale and put an Ikea table top on it. The table base adjusts from 3' to 5' in length so it is easy to adjust to your available space. I can fit an Ikea Alex cabinet underneath which pulls out on wheels for extra storage space. Sometimes I sew standing up and it makes a great cutting table as well. I do miss the ability to just push the machine out of sight into the cabinet, but the ability to adjust the table height is worth more to me.
Great information! Thank you. I’m tall and had to move too adjustable workbenches for sewing tables and cutting tables. Most sewing cabinets are too small and low.
I purchased a Tracy’s Table cabinet years ago and they have now made 4 acrylic inserts for me for my many machines… Love the air lift feature as it adjusts for whichever machine I am using. you can also add-on any of the side or rear extensions- my sister just did one last year for a cabinet she purchased about 6 years ago. They are based near Wausau WI… They exhibit at the Great Wisconsin Quilt Show every September… only feature I would like after all these years is a height-adjustable one…
I am considering purchasing a sewing cabinet for a house we will be moving into so I can have my own crafting space. I am not just interested in sewing, but also jewelry making, illustrating, writing, and other crafts. I am wondering if using a closed cabinet with the sewing machine stored underneath allows for enough leg room to be comfortable while doing another craft; or if I should just get a nice desk with drawers to use as a versatile craft space instead of a sewing cabinet.
Country Lane furniture solid wood sewing cabinets. They deliver. High quality, solid, gorgeous pieces of furniture made for sewists. They make inserts for any sewing machine.
Great advice! I am currently looking at open cabinets as well as another sewing machine. I found a cabinet that I like that will work with my current machine, but won’t work if I buy the machine I really want. Can you tell me what brand of cabinets you carry.? Always trust your opinions. Also, do you ship the cabinets in a flat box or put together? It shocks me that we spend thousands of dollars for a cabinet that we have to assemble. Thanks for all your good work.
I would love to find an acrylic piece that would fit my Juki TL2010Q for a sewing table I bought years ago. Unfortunately I can't seem to find anyone who makes custom pieces to fit. 😒
Arrow Sewing makes custom inserts for any machine, as long as you're using a Kangaroo/Arrow Cabinet. Check it out here: arrowsewing.com/custom-inserts/custom-sewing-machine-insert/
Look in your local community for a plastics fabrication shop. Most communities have one as custom plastic/acrylic items are made for commercial display, etc. I called several in my area and found that they would make a cabinet insert for my sewing machine.
I’d love to see a cabinet that lets me sit directly in front of the needle. Almost every cabinet I’ve looked at has the machine centered over the leg opening, which puts the needle to left, and I have to squeeze to the left side of the leg opening to center myself in front of the needle. I don’t need the machine centered in the opening, I need it positioned to the right. Please. Let’s consider the ergonomics of sewing,

That's a great tip!
You do a very good job explaining your furniture & sew machine needs.
Thank you!

Definitely be sure to hit those points for the next one! 😅

I’d like a sewing room…….this is great knowledge on the sewing furniture.

Ultimately you will have to sacrifice some of your leg space under the cabinet when your machine is stored away. In the end it's up to you!

I like the purple-black-white quilt on the wall. Do you have the name of the pattern?

We primarily carry Kangaroo / Arrow Sewing furniture. They do ship flat unfortunately, just to keep the cost and ease of shipping down.
Aloha from Hawaii!! Do you ship to Hawaii???
👍👍😁
How do you keep your cabinets from sliding on a woo floor?
Use the little felt or rubber stick ons

Can we please decide which is an “open” cabinet and which is “closed?” You switched definitions when you changed locations.
I was hoping for more of a substantive reply that addressed the issue…

My husband cut a hole in a long table for my machine. I can sit anywhere, including in front of the needle
I've been using a cheap plastic table I got from home depot for 6 years. I paid 35 bucks for it.
Hey if it works, that's what matters!!
I have another don’t. Don’t let a non-sewer convince you that the cabinet is the right one for you. 😂
Yeah that's a great one! Haha 😂
