This is very helpful. I slipped and fell in the bathtub 3 days ago, caught my rib on the edge of the porcelain tub. It's been painful like a knife stabbing me I can't remove. EXCELLENT - for 2 reasons. Firstly they include a stack of information, including lots of things most of us wouldn't have thought of, all towards helping an injured rib heal, and the SECOND thing is that they don't - like so many boring videos - they don't talk as if they are reading everything, they speak with interest, as if they really want to get this information over, as if they care. Some people who CARE in this world! Amazing. Thank you. John Windsor-Cunningham
Thanks for the video! I fractured a rib after severe coughing from pneumonia. I felt it crack, and the pain was intense (I screamed when it happened, then a lot of f-bombs followed). Urgent care, then hospital for x-rays. The pain is incredible, and I can't imagine multiple fractured ribs. Good luck to all of you fellow sufferers.
4 months later how is it healing? Hopefully you're much better now. Did the medical professionals give you anything (besides unnecessary medical bills)?
After it fractured how did you cough without it hurting.i can't take the pain when I cough is there a way to cough without as much pain. Thanks for your time.

I broke 5 ribs after a fall in my house. Still in the healing process. This happened 5-1/2 weeks ago. I was in the hospital for 2 days. The doctor also told me I had a small lung puncture. Not significant enough to treat and a bruised lung. I have improved with breathing, standing and sitting and walking straight. Still a struggle to get myself out of bed. I was sleeping in a recliner for 3 weeks. My left rib cage is still so tender. The E.R. doctor said my ribs should heal within 6 - 8 weeks. I'm trying to patient. I can't drive and it's a struggle to get up into my SUV (passenger side). to go anywhere. I am 67 years old. I was in excellent shape. Exercised 6 days a week. Weight bearing, aerobic, weights. I eat a very healthy diet. No processed foods, no white carbs, no sugary foods. I guess long story short I am not use to being out of commission for this long. Wondering if I will every heal from this :(
Tina hunter oh dear, so sorry to hear this! Wish you well in your recovery, it takes time I know after an accident to my ribs, painful process. Please take care. 🙏😔💕
@@tinahunter9793 : Ms. Tina, you had 5 fractures, and it took you 4 months to heal all of them? Omg!!!!!! Wow!!!! I can only guess I might be down for 5-6 months then, considering I was runned over by a guy's DODGE RAM TRUCK, suffering right collapsed lung, damage to liver and spleen, 7 totaled rib fractures, and eye, as well as stomach, chest, and knee abrasions..
Going thru this for just about two weeks now and am naturally doing many of these movements and postures. Helps me to feel better as the body develops a lot of aches and pains during the periods of little movement. A few other suggestions I have for those experiencing a rib fracture for the first time : - when you feel the need to cough or sneeze, stand if you can and hold the affected side - both front and back - securely with your hands to help ease the pain. I’ve found this even suppresses the need to sneeze much of the time and that’s even more satisfying ; - when sitting and standing up, or sitting up and laying down in bed (or any other effort which causes strain) be sure to breath in before the movement and then out while making the movement ; - stay away from the prone position as much as possible: during the day be sure to sit or stand and walk around your house and garden as much as you can without overdoing it. This allows the lungs and other organs to move and function well, clears any phlegm in the system so you can breathe better and ultimately it will ease the pain. Just remember to work to your limits - stop where you feel pain. I hope these small tips help you further. I know they have been a godsend for me.
Yes this has happened to me and I don’t go to the doctors so home trying to figure put after wrestling and thrown over in bed think I landed on the elbow and as I payed to catch my breath about ten mins after on my left side I breathed in and heard and felt a small pop.. It’s been almost 7 days and it feel a little worse the pain hard to breath fully in, feels like something is shifting when I reach on top of like the fridge with the rite none effect arm..as I bring it down almost makes me feel like a weird dizzy feeling or like I’m pushing something I should not. The cold has made the bones sore I have noticed the last two nights .
Very timely information! My husband was involved in a bike crash and, among other things, he cracked a rib. I just learned a few things to make him more comfortable right now. Thank you!
@@BobandBradI just had my second bike crash, broke ribs both times, this time was 3 on one side and 1 on the other. It’s pain. Last time i was in the hospital for a month. Many different surgeries
Was fencing, tripped and fell on post fracturing the 7, 8 n 9th ribs, was winded for ages, lucky boss was with me at the time, drove me to hospital, was a great relief when the doctor administered morphine, that was 6 days ago, am still in serious pain
Hi guys!! My SI joint has been a downfall for the past 2 yrs. Last week I bent over our kitchen table to get relief of low back. Well obviously I was to close to edge of table an slide off, fracturing my ribs an I would say I damage the cartilage as you were talking in this video. You guys are great an teach an show us alot!! Thank you an God Bless!!! I had to chime back in and thank you guys so so much on confirming what to do after awhile. Such a blessing! 💙
Thanks for your videos. I have Multiple Myeloma and have just broken my 5th rib of the year. My ribs break if I smile the wrong way! I appreciate the quality and delivery of your videos. Thanks a bunch!
With heavy osteoporosis I have experienced many cracked ribs from too much pressure on individual ones from various objects including reaching through car doors with windows somewhat up and have found the best way to aid healing is to KEEP the lungs full of air as opposed to empty. In a sense, invert your breathing regiment. This provides great strength to the rib cage and pushes the ribs out into position where they can heal fast. Great job guys, thanks!
It seems so counterintuitive to partake in actions that make you feel worse, but with a rib injury it’s very important to breathe deeply frequently. Rib injuries are torturous! Everything hurts. Lots of ice and rest.
LOVE this video!! Just worked on someone a while back that had cracked ribs!! Now I’ll have something to share with future clients with cracked ribs! You guys are super!!! Have a happy week! 🙂
Most people take for granted and will probably never realize all the roles the "uninjured" ribs play in our lives and the fact that they move and flex with almost everything we do, both voluntary and involuntary, normal functions. I've been through many injuries in my life and a lot of pain from them but I can say without a doubt, ribs are the worst and longest lasting pain, triggered by almost anything you do ! I shattered my knee and tore the ACL completely apart in 2010 and it was horrific pain for a long time but at least I could still breathe, cough, sneeze, etc. without the feeling of being ripped to pieces from the inside out. This is the second serious injury to my ribs and I Pray To GOD, the last. I'm three weeks, two days since it happened and still in serious pain, can't get deep breaths and sneezing is Absolutely Excruciating !! I fear I'm developing permanent scar tissue that may limit my future lung function/capacity and more. I'm starting your regimen immediately. Just plugged in the heating pad to sleep with now. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and wisdom to all of us unfortunate "rib injured". It means a lot.
Am 78 and had a fall while trying to save my 90 year old husband who choked on his tea and was moving backwards . I couldn't take his weight and both crashed on the floor as he has a balancing problem.Nothing happened to him as he had a cushion effect as I was under him ! Xray revealed a slight shift in the 7th and 8th ribs. Had pain killers for 10 days.Felt relieved when I read that all my co sufferers had excruciating pain while getting up from bed. Take care all of you. 😊
I broke a few ribs in a head on collision and had surgery on my ribs with a metal plate in my body and 8 months later I can say my ribs healed well I’m just getting used to the scars on my body and my new body and new movements I hope I heal 100% in due time good luck to everyone going through this broken rib situation don’t give up and stay strong 💪🏾❤️♥️❤️
Thank you so much for providing us with your knowledge and wisdom. I have a small fracture on my 10th rib from a Heimlich maneuver, yes it was a rough day but doing better now. Seeing your video gives me some peace of mind, knowing what is best to do next…. Thank you 😊
You guys have been a huge help putting my condition into perspective. Wrecked a Motorbike cracked a rib and took a kidney punch. One week in. Worked all week I feel 80% better. Kept everything moving, I think it will help overall.
Did you go to the hospital? My husband fell off a mtn bike on the concrete wash by our house. He fell on some rocks. He refuses to go to the hospital. It's been 3 days and he thinks something is fractured. He's a 6/10 in pain
@@Vrilliance having just crashed into a rural mailbox on my mtb at 30mph and broke 3 ribs, collapsed lung, level 3 separated CT shoulder joint etc, my pain was well above a 10 and still is after 14 days. I’d say he’s fine as long as he can take deep breaths. I’ve broken ribs 3 times so far and every time it’s the most painful thing known to man or woman! Good luck
Thank you so much for this! I'm about 12 days out from multiple rib fractures. I am finally at a point where I can carefully move and lightly function without extreme pain. I noticed last night, however, that it's starting to feel like the muscles in my back have clamped down and are adding to the pain, so I was trying to figure out if it was a good idea to start trying to stretch those muscles or not. This was exactly what I needed to know. (My doctor gave tons of instructions about breathing and keeping lungs healthy, but not much on healing ribs, muscles, etc.) I appreciate this so much. I'm going to have to start slowly and gently, but I'm looking forward to getting these exercises started and healing all of the damage as much as possible.
@Tammy Gray, what are the instructions for keeping you lungs healthy, please? I had 8 broken ribs and the right lung collapsed after a skiing accident. Another fracture was on the right collarbone and one on T10. Had surgeries for spine and collarbone, fixed with some screws. The pain is killing me, even now after 5 months. I'm looking for any information that will help me sleeping during the night and functioning during the day. Thank you.
My 87 y/o mom in rehab to heal 5 broken ribs, had small pneumothorax that didn’t require chest tube. It’s no joke she will have spent 2-3 months as “inpatient”.
I had to have an CT scan with the dye stuff to tell me I had three cracked ribs. I broke them last year around April. It took my doctor all the way to November 2020 to finally tell me what I had. They still hurt, so I’m worried the scar tissue issue you speak of is what I have now. I’m just in tears a lot now… Can barely play with my children now. Calling a doctor when I get home from vacation because I can’t keep doing this almost 16 months later.
Great video and advice I broke 6 ribs in a car crash and it’s been 6 months later and my ribs are healed really well it’s amazing how the body can heal itself. God is amazing
Oh my gosh, thank you so much for this video! I broke a rib a week ago and it hurts like hell. Knowing there are little things I can do to help really make a difference. Plus, I thought laying on the same side as the broken rub would be a bad thing. So happy to know that I can lay on that side! Thanks again, guys!!
I fell off a roof onto concrete, broke 6 ribs, collar bone and wrist. For 1 month I could not walk and had to sleep in a chair. I cannot describe the pain of just shifting in my chair, a burning throbbing broken glass type feeling. I am serious when I say that no pain can possibly come close to it.
I fell over two weeks ago backwards off a tall ladder onto stone shoulder first and ended up in ER in agony. They said that the fractures on my ribs were small and didn't really show up on the xray and gave me a sling and sent me home. For the first few days I couldn't move alone or sleep. Over two weeks it got better then four days ago on trying to get up from bed I heard something crack on my left side and since then it is agony in a different way and feels wrong. My doctor cannot see me for ten days so if it doesn't get better I will end up again in the ER. It's my first fall and break in 65 years so I guess that I'm lucky.
Stephanie Murray Hi Stephanie so sorry you had such a bad injury. I had a fall hitting my right ribs, breast and side of the concrete ground almost 5 months ago, the pain experienced was excruciating, not yet recovered from it. Back at doctors today, bloods taken. Not sure whats going on. Im 64yrs and still having pain. Please let me know how your doing. Hope your beginning to feel better each day. Take care
@@francesmorris3413 Well it took me four weeks to feel more or less ok on the rib problem but the shoulder will take a few weeks more and physiotherapy. Yesterday I worked on the house and it was ok then later the pain began and I had to go lie down and today the pain is back up high and I don't take pain killers. Trying to rest, not easy for me being an active person. I hope that you are doing ok.
Thank you guys I greatly appreciate it I'm actually experiencing an injury for hooking a turn too fast on my e-bike and I probably bounced off the pavement this is very informative thank you guys and it's a pleasure to subscribe to you guys.
Wow..sounds almost exactly what I just did this pastcweekend..only I was out at a lake and riding around this old sand and gravel road and the sand caused me to stop short from going 20 mph into the curse and I flew forward like superman..I hit hard riggt on my chest n upper stomach. I couldn't breath for a few seconds. I did go to the er n they did all their scans n told me I didn't vreakxqnything..Thank God but I'm pretty bruised on both sides of the upper ribs. I'm in pain riggt now and I pray it doesn't last too long.
Love you guys. Sitting here with two broken ribs. Getting in and out of bed is murder, but once I get on my side I find relief. Was wondering if it was okay to try sleeping on the injured side. Now I know. Thanks again for your informative videos.
Thank you Bob and Brad for all your good information. I was in a car accident five days ago and my ribs started to feel painful the day after the accident and have continued to do so. I have followed all your advise regarding how to rest and use cold packs but I have not gone to a doctor. I am feeling better in the morning and the pain gets worse during the afternoon and evening. I am taking Ibuprofin for the pain. My question is, after all this time, should I still go to the doctor, or should I assume that my lungs are not punctured, etc. Thank you.
Been suffering from a broken ribs for a couple of months now and it really hurts. My Orthopedist gave me some muscle relaxation and painkillers along with antibiotics. I consumed that for a month afterwards I then proceed with organic medicine. It saddened me because i thought this is just a broken rib only to find out that there’s also multiple bone contusion at my back that also made it a little bit challenging. The process of going back and forth to the hospital during this pandemic is truly a hassle but wishing everything will be fine soon. Loving the informative videos you both did a great job. Love from Philippines 🇵🇭
Had a bicycle accident just a few days ago. Flew off the left side of the bike and landed on my left arm. Along with a few scrapes and bruises, I broke 1 lower rib on my left side and cracked my left elbow. Rib did not puncture lung and there was no internal damage from the rib breaking. Told to relax and do no exertive activities (getting up is exertive and painful right now). Each excursion reopens the break as it heals, but eventually it does heal. Arm put in a splint cast, given some pain meds and sent home. Told not to bandage the ribs as it may cause a serious lung infection due to not breathing right because, although the bandaging would help with the pain, they restrict the rib movement and air flow. Doctors offered no further information on what I can or should do. I cannot lay down, if I do I have excruciating pain and it is all I can do to get back up. I have to sleep in a office chair that leans back. I have asthma and this break makes taking my sprays pure hell. I'm told it will take a few weeks before the pain finally subsides and even longer until it heals. Thanks for the information in this video!
Just fractured my 2nd,3rd,and 4th ribs and hurt my shoulder in a mountain bike crash today and I start a new job in 8 days. It’s going to be interesting! I’m pretty sore but I have a very high pain tolerance so I’m not too worried. Thank you for this video it’s going to help me.
I had a severe fall 5 wks ago and still hurts to breathe, cough, laugh or SNEEZE. X-rays were negative and I got zero information from my doctor on if I had any tears or damage to muscles, organs or cartilage. Just in tears at what I see as being completely dismissed, but for the usual heat/cold/NSAIDS. I screamed trying to turn during my X-rays. Hx, 68 yo f with osteoporosis, fell into my left shin (10” hematoma) and flipped off the steps onto the ground (about 5’ fall), onto my left back and shoulder. Oddly the right side including liver area are the most painful. Haven’t been back after I was denied CT/MRI DT insurance coverage. I was so embarrassed because I fell; dark and I have ataxia, trying to carry things through the front door. Feel like an old fool that should’ve gone to the ER. Thanks so much for this video. ❤
Excellent! Just watched your older vid (and loved it) and this updated on popped into my feed right after (yay technology) learned a lot from you two today!! I believe I may have a cracked rib as when I touch it I can feel it cracking. You’ve answered my question as to whether or not I should see a Dr. and you’ve provided some great therapeutic stretches and treatments I can work on during my healing journey!!! Thank you so much!! Happy New Year Brad & Bob you guys are awesome 👏🏿
65 yr 5'2 99lb osteoporosis. Healing one rib right now. Previous was 3..then 3 again left side. Great video im 47 years fell 3days ago wasin pain.but today i couldnt even breathe when i woke up.was in panick mode. Sale the video great advice thanks.
I had displaced fractures of 9th and 10 ribs a year ago. I always have trouble with the "stirring the pot" type excercise. I think it contributed to my delayed healing. A better excercise for me was: start position- lying on side, fully outstretched, top leg bent and shin touching floor, arms together on facing side. Stretch- raise top arm and rotate upper body until arm touches floor on other side, while keeping top leg in start position. Your head should be facing the ceiling at full strech. Do not stretch to point of pain.
you are a pair of comedians and had me laughing in pain , i had a hard fall last night doing motocross and was slammed down on my left side ribs and my head , i was winded for a while but didnt pass out .the only way i could get comfy was on my back with no pillows , but that was partly due to my neck being sore too .thanks for the video .
Thanks for sharing all this. Two days ago I had a fall on a steepish drop of a forest trail. Toe caught in the soil and I tumbled over landing on my RT thigh, my RH rib cage landed on my forearm, which broke my fall, I guess. Mouth full of dirt, yadda yadda OUCH! I was able to finish my 5km run after I washed off at then next water fountain. I think I mostly bruised intercostals? cause it's an 'area' that hurts when I want to sneeze, or take deep breaths. There is NO pain unless I want to sneeze. I've cold packs several times. The pain attenuated over night and I was able to go for a 4km run late this aft (Fri 20/IX/24.) Took me a km before the chest discomfort almost disappeared. I'm a 72 yr old guy, used to running modest 5-8km runs. Sitting around there is very mild or no discomfort. Many years ago an ER MD took x-rays following a bike accident (my hand and forearm) He told me he'd never seen anyone with as heavy set bones as mine. I'll wait two weeks? to see if this disappears? Then call my MD? Thanks for sharing your expertise...!!
I've been out of work for a month now, been talking to a new contractor and in the middle of getting hired, took my boy sledding and broke ribs 2 days ago, well I'm starting this new job Monday, ahhh a mans life
I have OI and I can’t count how many rib fractures I’ve had over the years. If I cough or sneeze and I’m not sitting straight I fracture a rib or two. Great info ! Thanks for all you do.
2 broken ribs 3 weeks ago, its still so much agony. I cant believe the persistent pain, I've had accidents before and a savage childbirth but this is somehow the most debilitating as its affecting my breathing, laughing, coughing, sneezing, driving, all areas of my life. I want to go out for runs and do lots of playtime with my boy but I cant. It sucks so bad and really getting me down. I hope so much this heals, I feel like its me for life atm. 😭😭😭 thanks gor the excersize ideas 🙏
I`m a Physio Student and i love the modified Palov Press around the 14:00 min mark!! Usually there is no rotation involved but in this case it seems quiet helpful with a rip injury!
I can't even take a big breath because it hurts so much. I don't understand why I should sleep on the same side as the injury? I haven't gone to the doctor because they never help with anything I can't get from listening to yall. Still the pain is absolutely horrible! BTW, I injured my mid right ribs by reaching quickly for my cellphone slipping off the seat of my car while going around a sharp turn. The arm rest of my CRV was up and apparently much stronger than I ever could have imagined. It hurt immediately and I knew that I was in trouble right away. First week so far has only gotten more painful, but I feel comfortable that it's not more serious than bruised ribs. Also no, there was no accident just a very sharp turn that created enough inertia to throw me against the armrest as I was already reaching in that direction. 🥺 What a lesson I've learned!!
@@michaelsparks3573 I know what you mean. I can't afford to go to the Dr anyway. I guess everything that pertains to health involves money. going on 9 wks for me from a fall. still hanging in there.....hope your doing better now
Thanks for the great video, Brad & Bob! 7 weeks ago, I broke four ribs (4,5,6&7) after a fall with the (electrical) bike. Holy moly guys! I fell down the porch stairs a week ago. Fell on my back-right side then went down 6 steps. I cant sleep on my side, cant sit up from laying position and my right kidney area hurts and swells up at night. No fever or blood tho. What you are saying to do would kill me!
Thank you for your precious tips and information. Could I ask you one question? I am a 54 year-old female runner. (Guess my bone is grtting weaker in this menopausal phase.) I've had this rib pain since yesterday since I tried to reach something in the car through an open window. I felt sudden pain in this awkward position but were able to run. Could it be a fracture or some kind of soft tissue tear??? ( I have slight to medium level of pain, but breathing diesn't cause sharp pain. )

Only had the slightest visible bruise outlining where my arm was.
Nope. All was back to normal after 2-3 weeks. The pulled tendons or ligaments that connect below the outside of my knee have been the slowest to heal. This morning was the first time I stepped out of my truck and the twisting motion didn't cause any pain. @@piyushkumar-me1nb

So...if the lung isn't punctured...there is nothing a doctor can do, other than charge $500 for a talkabout.
They can take an X-ray to confirm its broken and where. That's it besides anti inflammatory medications and pain killers.

Another tip - if you have to cough or sneeze, hug a pillow to brace your ribs while you cough. It really helps decrease the pain a bit.
Right
I broke 5 ribs after a fall in my house.

Every time I get hurt and look for help, your videos are the ones that help me the most! Thanks a lot, docs!
Thats truth
I third that emotion
Going thru this for just about two weeks now and am naturally doing many of these movements and postures. Helps me to feel better as the body develops a lot of aches and pains during the periods of little movement.
A few other suggestions I have for those experiencing a rib fracture for the first time :
- when you feel the need to cough or sneeze, stand if you can and hold the affected side - both front and back - securely with your hands to help ease the pain. I’ve found this even suppresses the need to sneeze much of the time and that’s even more satisfying ;
- when sitting and standing up, or sitting up and laying down in bed (or any other effort which causes strain) be sure to breath in before the movement and then out while making the movement ;
- stay away from the prone position as much as possible: during the day be sure to sit or stand and walk around your house and garden as much as you can without overdoing it.
Thankyou ..
Bruised or broke my ribs two weeks ago during a bike crash and by far the worst pain is from sneezing. Thanks for sharing.

Very timely information! My husband was involved in a bike crash and, among other things, he cracked a rib. I just learned a few things to make him more comfortable right now. Thank you!

I cracked mine reaching over a pallet to feed animals. Felt the crack and knew. Ugh. I’m breathing deep right now. Thx
It seems so counterintuitive to partake in actions that make you feel worse, but with a rib injury it’s very important to breathe deeply frequently. Rib injuries are torturous! Everything hurts. Lots of ice and rest.

Ripped to pieces 😂
You two were the first one's to pop up, when I googled fractured ribs, thank you for this video I'm going to need it.

I broke my rib when I rolled over in bed. How is that possible? Does this mean it is likely to happen again?
I just fractured my ribs and the pain just keeps getting worse. Thank you for your video
I’m so sorry 😢 I hope things are improving for you and your family life! That’s good you are watching these videos to help!!

My left ribs so painful but thank you this video ,, im worry ,, but thank you
I fell over two weeks ago backwards off a tall ladder onto stone shoulder first and ended up in ER in agony.

Hi Stephanie so sorry you had such a bad injury.

My teacher has suffered from this injury. He is getting better
Just fractured my 2nd,3rd,and 4th ribs and hurt my shoulder in a mountain bike crash today and I start a new job in 8 days. It’s going to be interesting!

Mountain bike same here lol
Same here but e-bike. I drove mine into a ditch while I was looking at a bird

🥺 What a lesson I've learned!!

thank you so much doc's from the Philippines
We are so happy we could help!
Thank you you pin pointed my break it helped a lot it had to be the one up near the collar bone of course but you got me so I can breath
Compression wrap is working wonders for me during day at night I lay down with it open under my back and as soon as I have to sneeze or cough I tighten it up quickly and place pillow on chest.
I have 3 fractures ribs
Broke a rib on each side while in a mosh pit. Thanks for the information
I am 46, 6' and 240lbs Male. I took a fall in a parking lot pothole, and landed with my arm between my side and the pavement, but managed to save my starbucks coffee. That was two weeks ago and my side is tender, especially when taking a deep breathe, but sneezing doesn't both it at all. It is more of an ache, not any sharp pains. Only had the slightest visible bruise outlining where my arm was.
Still tender
Nope. All was back to normal after 2-3 weeks. The pulled tendons or ligaments that connect below the outside of my knee have been the slowest to heal. This morning was the first time I stepped out of my truck and the twisting motion didn't cause any pain. @@piyushkumar-me1nb
Thanks for the exercises fellas. Unfortunately I fear I’ll miss a month of boxing due to this, but am paying attention to how I can recover intelligently
Im center and played basketball tonight. After a rebound and good tackle, I felt excruciating pain. Cannot do the deep breathing. Coach said a broken rib. Having X-ray tomorrow. Sleeping hurts... Couldn't even take a shower.
