I do agree on the relevance of personal taste, but In my perspective, selecting the shape of someone's first pipe should also consider more practical aspects. For example, the desired duration of the smoke session will determine the size of the bowl, clenching would be easier for unexperienced pipe smokers if the pipe is bent, a narrow walled shape (e.g. billiard) would provide a warmer experience for outdoor smokers in cold regions, readers would prefer straight pipes for clenching (or churchwardens), writers would find useful the author shape, etc. Thanks again for sharing your experience and ideas, and for presenting them in such a clear way. Best regards
My wife watched this video with me, and said she was so impressed that a pipe is an accessory like pair of shoes, or a purse, or a hat. I told her she's got it all wrong. We're talking pipes here! I do believe this video is going to cost me. She also told me you were handsome. She won't be watching any videos with me anymore.
Nigel Mancini - Well, that’s unfortunate, sorry about the unintended results of my video, both causing you to spend money, and my effect on the opposite sex. 😒😒😒
Your deadpan, calm delivery is so soothing...exactly how I imagine smoking a pipe will feel. Thank you so much for helping to educate another newbie over here!
Myself I've always been a bent, or church warden guy. They just seem to me that they're more comfortable and since I usually only smoke at home relaxing it just suits me better. Great topic though I never really thought about this much.
I consider shape more in terms of functionality. The long stem of a churchwarden cools the smoke. The short stem of a bulldog means less weight, so it's easier to hold between the teeth for hands free smoking. A bent pipe lowers the bowl to make it easier to smell the smoke rising from the bowl for aromatic tobaccos, and so forth.
After a hard days work driving I like to go home get one of my favorite tobacco's sit back and watch some muttonchop videos. It settles me right down. Thank you muttonchop
Love this channel, thank you for putting the time and effort into this. As I have just got back into pipes I have been binged this channel. I smoked hand rolled for about 16 years, then bought a cheap pipe and used it for a few months, vaped for 2 years and I still do but I have also treated myself to a Savinelli Tiger 626 and a Butz Mirage. The first pipe tobacco I bought a few years ago was Petersons De Luxe which I enjoyed, seeing the selection of tobaccos in the US like the plum pudding compared to the UK is cruel, not to mention the price you guys get a 50g tin for compared to us. Thanks again.
If only I saw this video a few months ago, but I was still able to figure out eventually that a billiard is right for me! Great advice, as always, and I want to thank you for helping us newbies as we get into this hobby.
I started with a straight billiard, but found I like to smoke multiple bowls in a setting. I got tired of tasting pipe liquid and using pipe cleaners. So I changed to a bent pipe and have settled on a Savinelli 614 shape. Growing a beard did definitely help lol
Newbie pipe smoker here. I've been catching up on your videos. A lot of great information in them. Thank you for taking the time and sharing with us. Have a great week.
Thanks for the videos. I am a beginner and after watching your videos, I have learned the Breath technique and it works wonders. I also have a quality tobacconist right down the road called Briarworks. They recently moved their factory to town and sell Briarworks and Moonshine pipes. They are a wealth of knowledge and their customer service is fantastic. I already see a nice pipe collection in my future. I cannot agree more with your pipe selection. I walked in and asked them how to pic the right pipe. They let me hold everyone of them in my hand and suggested pipes based on how i hold it in my mouth and hand. I went with a Moonshine Cannonball. Keep up the good work!
Hi Chris, cool topic. I singled it down to pipes with amber looking stems and went with that filter. Bought Peterson Rosslare 106 straight billard. A useful presentation 👍
I find half bends just right for me, easy to hold, less leverage against the mouth grip, a brandy or half apple. My Sherlock Holmes Peterson is one of my favourites. Corn Cob fir ghosting aromatics, Churchwarden for reading a book or when I feel Tolkien like, Bing special straight when I listen to my 78 swing and crooner collection. So it depends on the occasion and its good to have a small collection to choose from. I love and use them all. Lastly, if facial hair is such a plus why don‘t weirwolves smoke a pipe😉
This video really hits home. I’m new to pipe smoking. I wondered if I was weird for worrying about this. I’ve since picked my favorite shape a pot type. I like a lot of styles but they don’t all fit me. Also I agree about the beard. I have bald spots and can’t pull it off. So I’m glad I found what works. Great video. Keep them coming please!
Thank you for advice and tips. Personally I've never though about this aspects. I think my pipes not enhancing my look but reflects a lot my "personality" simple and not so elegant and sophisticated infact i love row pipes and similar.

Awesome presentation, as always. I like your comment at the end about facial hair. It's maybe due to nostalgia to the good old days when groing beard and mostach was always stylish and trendy. And it's the same for pipe smoking in that era.
Poker to poke public in the eye...Bulldog because I have one...Dublin cause was married to a Dubliner...I like french pipes specially them Billiards, I've have another shapes but those are my favorites. Yesterday found from a garage sale a Peterson's Aran bulldog with silver ring in quite good shape, need some proper cleaning though. Thanks for the nice clip Chris and as always coll smokes,mate-
I just bought my first quality pipe. I went with a Peterson full bend. I have a big beard and moustache now so I think it looks good on me. It also smokes great, which is the most important part.
I never considered the shape of a pipe to complement my face, but look for shapes that contain the most briar around the chamber and the shank, so that heat is better dispersed. However, your videos have taught me how to avoid overheating my pipes using your breathing techniques. Thanks!
This is all so true! I can't get big pipes cause my framework is small: smaller bones, smaller face, very small mouth. A big pipe with a big stem looks bad on me and is uncomfortable. but I had to buy big pipes to aknowledge that. Second: I only like bent pipes... the most bent possible (ideal is the oom paul shape), why? cause when I smoke, I look out and sometimes I read, so straight pipes are right in my field of vision. good video!
I'm a shorter fella with a full beard. I started with a Churchwarden and still remains my favorite... however I just ordered a Cannonball pipe made by Moonshine. I actually mocked up the basic shape/size that the description provided out of Styrofoam just to see how it would fit and sit. It was crude to be sure and to help judge the weight I put a stone in the bowl. I think I'm going love this pipe and it just might be my new favorite.
I don't smoke when out and about and tend to hold the pipe rather than clench it. So for me it's all about how it feels in the hand and of course how it smokes.
Brother Chop, Couldn't agree more. Rocking the full winter beard and some shapes I wasn't too happy with do suit me better now hahaha. Great video my friend. Still a fan of my full bent apples and straight bulldogs. Semper Fi, SargeTube57
A unexpected flavor, not exactly what I thought the video was going to be about but a different take on the blend. Aesthetically pleasing is certainly one of many factors when determining the smoking utensil one chooses to purchase. Great vid with smokey flavors that provoke the thoughts. Sweet smokes amigo 😎
Every ugly duckling is some mothers swan........ Just go with a pipe you like and don't bother about other people. Muttnchop is right so enjoy your pipe smoking. Find a pipe and a tobacco that you like and enjoy them to the full. Happy piping !!!!
Have been smoking pipes over 30 years. Yes pipes are an accessory for everyone. Still think the best pipe is the pipe you enjoy smoking. No I'm don't grow facial hair and that's my choice. Loved your video and thanks for sharing. Keep up your great videos 😊
My method for that was simple: buy cheap pipes of every possible shape that looks good to me, then find if it pleases me. At the moment, my favorite shape is that classic "Sherlock Holmes" pipe, the one that looks kinda like a saxophone.
I am planning (at least in the beginning) to smoke in solitude. Therefore the most important thing for me is the flavor and pleasant discovery that is in the hobby and I want to pick the right pipe to meet that objective. I would like to know if there are pipe types and shapes that are problematic in flavor delivery or those that are inherently problematic to maintain? Are there those pipes that I should consider just to get a simple enjoyment and avoid problems if any. Thank you! I am enjoying these videos!
Very helpful for a new pipe smoker. I am hoping you can maybe expand on this with another video on how to evaluate quality from one pipe to one brand to the next . As a new pipe smoker from learning how to pack and smoke to looking at all the manufacturers out there how can one evaluate quality? What should I be looking and considering for an upgrade ?
my choice of pipe is usually a bent basket pipe but i have a corncob with a tall boll and yes it doesnt look the best but it was cheap and i use it for smoking aromatic tobacco
My father, my grandfather, my uncle and my great uncle, never, as far as I am concerned, spent 2 seconds worrying about how they looked with a pipe. Other than my father, who briefly tried a beard, there was no facial hair. I began my pipe smoking journey with 4 pipes I inherited from my father. The best pipes I have are those that found me.
The secret is not giving two %#@&$. Pick a shape you find attractive, if it smokes well smoke it. If not seek out a new. Smoke not as an accessory to your wardrobe, smoke because you are an adult who cares enough to indulge in the finer things life offers. It only has to be a rat race if you enjoy running. I myself hate running so, I always stand and fight! Good smoke too you all.
lightweight full bend, it hangs well below the nose and is light enough to not strain the jaw, rusticated for grip pleasure. i like billiard bowls but that's only a visual preference and i guess because it is a tad lighter than many others. there is a problem with these it might set you off, you cant run a cleaner down it as well as a straight stem. if you want a pick of a favorite google: denver 119s pipe i dont go out in public with straight stems i end up holding them because i feel uncomfortable. it doesn't look good with my face but these full bent suit me well and i often walk with it.
I don't worry too much on how it looks on me. More so how I think the pipe looks. I like billiard and Dublin shapes the most. I also prefer the pipe to be out of my face, so I aim for full bent. It also keeps the smoke out of my face a bit more and easier to clench
This is my favorite video 😂. Lesson: grow a sweet beard and smoke any pipe you want. I smoke a bing sav some days and some I have a 606, 620, even a wee little 626. My favorite however is a bent bulldog or something like a 617 or 677 sav. The one I just love looking at and get compliments on it is the 636ks savs that I love.
Nice Video Brother! Glad To See A New Video Out Here By You. Good Topic For Everyone New Smokers & Veterans. The Part About The Facial Hair Is Soo True. When I Keep My Beard All My Pipes Look Good & Fitting. When I Shave It Off Or Just Go With My Goatee Only Two Or Three Of My Pipes Seem Fitting. However As Long As I Stay Home I Can Always Enjoy Them All...lol..🍻😎👍
So glad to have found this channel as I'm just starting to get back into pipes! What pipes shapes work best for "clenching" for long periods of time while reading, writing, or doing other things that need your hands to be free?
3 years late but imo you want something with a bit of a bend, and a slimmer bowl and shank if possible. The more horizontal the bowl of the pipe is from your mouth, and the heavier it is, the more work your jaw has to do to hold onto it.
@@placeholder8671 Thanks! I totally agree. My favorite for clenching is a little Peterson Irish Made Army. It's super light and the bend is just right.
Hi Muttnchop Piper, First of all, let me tell you that I really enjoy your channel, I’m a new pipe smoker and it has been really helpful to watch your videos. Related to this particular subject “What Shape Should I Choose?”, My best advice as a new pipe smoker is to try with Corn Cob Pipes, they came in almost all the shapes, and it’s a low budget option to find out what shape fells better with your way of smoking. Regards JJ Keep Up with the Muttnchop talks
Never smoke in public and rarely look in the mirror while piping, but I will now! Variations on the bent bulldog shape for me. The facial hair comment was great - pipes and beards go together!
Choosing a shape is a tough subject. I have unfortunately spent a good deal of money only to discover that I don't like certain pipes. I recommend following Virtually Dead's advice and trying cheap pipes at first. To be more specific, make sure you try a straight cob and a bent cob. I always thought I would like a straight pipe, but I now find that some level of curve (even if it's just a prince) is far more comfortable. As far a what looks good one me, welp, I just don't know. I laughed out loud at Chop's advice about facial hair because it is so true and I never realized it before. Although I'm getting older, my facial hair looks good after about a week of growth, but any longer than that and it looks terrible. And I just can't figure out what pipe shape looks good on this old kisser. Maybe I'll take Chop's advice and look at some Google images.
I can't grow a proper beard and I am 30 years old now. I like the technique you suggested, so I think I am going to go with it, or just purchase a huge collection of pipes with different shapes. Happy Piping !
I like the bent style pipe , but I do like your choice of the slightly bent with the pot style bowl , I also like the Peterson bent in black , I had a beard and moustache which was very strong , until I had to have chemotherapy and it fell out , but I've now managed to grow it back but it's not as strong as it was but hey ho , in my case it's better than nothing . Thanks for your vids. From England .
straight stems sag in my teeth, full bend is the way to go. the first pipes in europe were very long and sagged to the floor, if i could get away with one of those i would
Law N' Smoke - those are great selections, make sure and pick a shape you like, not a shape someone tells you to choose, you will always regret the purchase. 👍👍👍
For some reason straight Billiard was always appealing to me, since I was a young lad🤔😎Somebody must make the app that will help you to choose the correct shape of the tobacco pipe according to your face structure and life style 😎
New pipe smoker here. My favorite pipe shape is the chuchwardens, but they are not very good for transportation. Just started with a corn cob missouri meerschaun, cobbit shire. A little bit longer than normal but not a full churchwarden.
I've only got two pipes. But, I've never thought of how either one looks on me. Just the size of the bowl, length, basic aesthetics. Then, not many people will see me pipe smoking.
You're definitely right mentioning that decent facial hair makes a difference. I personally feel that older men, past the awkward sparce facial hair phaze can better pull off a pipe. When i picture pipes in my head its usually an old white haired guy that comes to mind. They just look cooler. It is what it is. That doesn't stop me from trying tho. I just ordered a savinelli alligator in blue and cant wait until It gets here.
Interesting topic muttonchop and your take on choices esp with looks and facial hair. Would be good to have a more in depth look at shapes and smokes based on preferences for tires of bacco and how they typ smoke on different shapes. Best wishes.
I have a pipe that feels so good in my hand. It fits my hand. It's a pleasure to hold in my hand. I don't think I would like a smaller pipe to hold in my hand, but it is a bit heavy to clinch. Always a trade off somewhere it seems.
Any recommendations on styles for outdoorsmen and women? I’m not concerned with how it looks on me as I’m mostly out alone. Thanks for taking the time and putting out a video with great information!
Cobs, Rusticated, or sandblasted. Personally I prefer pipes that I won’t have to worry about the Finnish as much and I can set down. Cobs are my favorite but for briar I like pokers and tankards
Happy pipeing to all longhaullarry here just want to say thanks to Muttnchop piper for returning my thanks to him , I'm new to the channel but have been watching for sometime. I just wanted to say I'm a bit jealous off my fellow pipe smokers south of the board as tobacco is so much cheaper in the US.. lucky...in Canada where I live and all over Canada tobacco is heart stopping ..I will give you a price mmm Captain Black Royal here in Canada 50 Gram pouch is 63 dollars in the US maybe a bit under 9 dollar's . I'm still trying to savor the smoke but my taste still needs work ..mmmm try try try is all I can do for now 😀..time to teach class happy pipeing..
Funny that I just came across this. This is EXACTLY where I am at. Have started pipe smoking about two months ago and fell in love with it right away. I have smoked out of 8 different corn cobs and just bought a Dr Grabow to try a briar and have a meerschaum. I found a few tobacco's I really enjoy and am ready to make the plunge to a real nice pipe. Thank you for the advice. On a side note you are correct about the facial hair. I had a full beard until two days ago. All my pipes fit me until I shaved. I wont even smoke a few of my pipes now until I get my beard back. I have really been "eyeballing" one specific shape for looks and I found out I am a clencher most the time. I have heard that an ( oom I think it's called or a fishtail maybe. The pipe is a vauen clover 1953 ) do you think this type of pipe would be an easy clenching pipe do to the shape? Thank you for putting out these videos, they are very helpful.
Greetings from Essex County, UK! I hope you're well. Currently rewatching a lot of your videos, I need refreshing my pipe basics. For a few years now, my go-to everyday pipe is an old Wessex XL120 (St Claude, France) rusticated bent billiard, 9mm filter, black. It smokes very well, I've always used Vauen filters and never found too much impact on the tobacco flavours. I like it because it's rather big, it looks rugged, not too heavy and despite its size I can hold it in without clenching too hard... Keep up the sterling work. Best regards, Manny PS: I've never been a LOTR fan but I have always wanted one of these incredible looking pipes... How do they actually smoke?... Cheers!
With that type of mustache, I know you're the ultimate authority on this subject.
Every pipe and pipe tabaco company should give this man a kickback, he introduced so many people to pipe smoking.
I never thought about how I looked smoking the pipe. I always just bought the pipe I liked. Of course, I do have a beard and mustache 😊
Yup.
Rick 778 - Well there you go then. 👍👍👍
So of course you look awesome...
Agreed. I'm more concerned with how they're going to smoke when choosing a pipe. I have no sense of style anyway, or so I've been told, lol.

Smoke not as an accessory to your wardrobe, smoke because you are an adult who cares enough to indulge in the finer things life offers. It only has to be a rat race if you enjoy running. I myself hate running so, I always stand and fight! Good smoke too you all.
lightweight full bend, it hangs well below the nose and is light enough to not strain the jaw, rusticated for grip pleasure.
i like billiard bowls but that's only a visual preference and i guess because it is a tad lighter than many others.
there is a problem with these it might set you off, you cant run a cleaner down it as well as a straight stem.
if you want a pick of a favorite google:
denver 119s pipe
i dont go out in public with straight stems i end up holding them because i feel uncomfortable. it doesn't look good with my face but these full bent suit me well and i often walk with it.
Greetings from Norway. I really like your channel. Can you do a video on "wizard pipes”? Happy piping.
Geir Arne Landrø - Thank you my friend, I’ll add it to the list. 👍👍👍
Another excellent video! Thanks!
In my opinion straight lighter shapes suit well for taller ,lean men, Best Greets and Thank You, have a nice week ahead, Paul
🤣
Great video. I have learned so much from your channel. Thanks for sharing!
PipeWriter - You bet my friend, it’s been my pleasure. 👍👍👍
I don't worry too much on how it looks on me. More so how I think the pipe looks. I like billiard and Dublin shapes the most. I also prefer the pipe to be out of my face, so I aim for full bent. It also keeps the smoke out of my face a bit more and easier to clench
Paul Allan - Very good points, thanks for the added information my friend. 👍👍👍
The man has an aesthetical concept, cool. In the other hand I'm done, I'm sheldon after Antarctica
Thats something was wondering about a little bit but not too seriously
Shawn Hendricks - It’s just something to think about. 👍👍👍
Nice video, i agree. My favorite shape is a Devil-Anse and Billiard
Great advice thanks for sharing!
Great point about the facial hair
Hi Muttnchop Piper,
First of all, let me tell you that I really enjoy your channel, I’m a new pipe smoker and it has been really helpful to watch your videos. Related to this particular subject “What Shape Should I Choose?”, My best advice as a new pipe smoker is to try with Corn Cob Pipes, they came in almost all the shapes, and it’s a low budget option to find out what shape fells better with your way of smoking.
Regards
JJ
Keep Up with the Muttnchop talks
Juan Jose Flores - I agree, thanks for commenting. 👍👍👍
I love the thumbnail for this vid. It looks like you’re throwing up the four horsemen hand sign.
Well when i used to smoke a pipe i enjoyed the type of pipe that had anywhere between a slight bend to a full bend and how it felt in my hand
I cant help it, but this man is so cute and kind, I love it!
Muttnchop is too good for this site. He's such a wholesome and warm person.
The exception rule is awesome man 👌😁
Ahmad A-Kareem - Thank you my friend. 👍👍👍
Never smoke in public and rarely look in the mirror while piping, but I will now! Variations on the bent bulldog shape for me. The facial hair comment was great - pipes and beards go together!
Johan J Shaw - Yes they do. 👍👍👍
Batz - Great comment, thanks for the added info my friend. 👍👍👍
I can't grow a proper beard and I am 30 years old now. I like the technique you suggested, so I think I am going to go with it, or just purchase a huge collection of pipes with different shapes. Happy Piping !
Thank you very much sir
I like the bent style pipe , but I do like your choice of the slightly bent with the pot style bowl , I also like the Peterson bent in black , I had a beard and moustache which was very strong , until I had to have chemotherapy and it fell out , but I've now managed to grow it back but it's not as strong as it was but hey ho , in my case it's better than nothing . Thanks for your vids. From England .
Another excellent video chris.I enjoy your honesty and frankness. By the way I have a beard.🤣
I like traditional shapes, billiards or bent. Anything Savinelli or Peterson. Savinelli 673s and 320s top my list.
straight stems sag in my teeth, full bend is the way to go. the first pipes in europe were very long and sagged to the floor, if i could get away with one of those i would
Law N' Smoke - those are great selections, make sure and pick a shape you like, not a shape someone tells you to choose, you will always regret the purchase. 👍👍👍
Haha I almost died laughing when you said the facial hair line!!! Great video thank you!🤣👍😎🤔
For some reason straight Billiard was always appealing to me, since I was a young lad🤔😎Somebody must make the app that will help you to choose the correct shape of the tobacco pipe according to your face structure and life style 😎
JEEROFUKU appalling or appealing?
James Denny Thank you, mate ))) That bloody autocorrector has mind of his own )))) Appealing of course ( corrected)😉
Me too
JEEROFUKU - That would be a cool app, I would get it. 👍👍👍
My favorite style is squashed tomato slanted diamond stem bulldog
Author, Bent Apple and Billiard are my favorite shapes.
New pipe smoker here. My favorite pipe shape is the chuchwardens, but they are not very good for transportation. Just started with a corn cob missouri meerschaun, cobbit shire. A little bit longer than normal but not a full churchwarden.
Wisdom told here - thank you
I was so glad to hear that with facial hair it looks good with any pipe. I wear a beard at 18.
🐑
I like strait or slightly bent pipes. My current favorite is a Peterson strait pot
Interesting topic muttonchop and your take on choices esp with looks and facial hair. Would be good to have a more in depth look at shapes and smokes based on preferences for tires of bacco and how they typ smoke on different shapes. Best wishes.
Great advice!
Great video ! Thanks a lot
Good vid Chris. Thanks.
Piping Deacon - You are welcome my friend, sounds like you have things figured out, congrats. 👍👍👍
"First, you need to be honest about your head" Hard truth.
Well, it's not quite right. I've got a list of undisclosed mental problems and I tend to laugh randomly, and often at inappropriate times.
Oh the shape.
Nevermind
Greetings from Essex County, UK!
I hope you're well.
Currently rewatching a lot of your videos, I need refreshing my pipe basics.
For a few years now, my go-to everyday pipe is an old Wessex XL120 (St Claude, France) rusticated bent billiard, 9mm filter, black.
It smokes very well, I've always used Vauen filters and never found too much impact on the tobacco flavours.
I like it because it's rather big, it looks rugged, not too heavy and despite its size I can hold it in without clenching too hard...
Keep up the sterling work.
Best regards,
Manny
PS: I've never been a LOTR fan but I have always wanted one of these incredible looking pipes... How do they actually smoke?... Cheers!
Greetings from the USA, my lord of the rings pipe smokes great, I just smoked it yesterday with some G.L.Pease aged Montgomery
