Hey AntennaMan. It is a mess indeed. Did you see this document the other day? www.fcc.gov/ecfs/search/search-filings/filing/108011864103366 It says all the things we all have been saying but in a very succinct and elegant way. Why can't this guy run for Senate or FCC chair?
My new Hisense tv with Nextgen tuner scans 5 Nextgen channels but they don't come on. Just a black screen saying tv not supported. Called support and they said to rescan and position antenna. Still the same, has anybody had this problem?
I agree with forgetting 3.0 for now. ATSC standard we have today works and will be around for a long time. I have a HDHomerun tuner and have no plans to buy a 3.0 tuner. I think your advice is smart.
I bought the same Tablo quad tuner DVR you have. I bought a $100 antenna and can get the 4 major networks and a couple other channels in HD plus a couple SD channels. I bought a 2 TB laptop HDD, that I put inside it for about $70. I also bought the Tablo guide service for a year for $50. I can record as much as I want and will never run out of space because I delete them after I watch them. I do have streaming services that are ad-free because I can't stand commercials. I spend less than half what I did with cable, which was a little over $130. I'm on my 9th month without cable and have saved more than I spent on that equipment a few months ago and now it's straight savings. That's what drives me nuts about Next-gen TV. Them thinking I'm going to settle for not being able to record it and watch it whenever and wherever I want to. I either get DVR capability or I'm not interested.
I think what they are going to do is plant DRM (digital rights management - copy protection) in the DRV recordings. It will require that you play it back though the recording device... which, to be fair, is what I usually do but sometimes I want to save it off device, record it for the car. As long as I can play it back on my PC, I can do this ua-cam.com/video/34yqhInSIaI/v-deo.html
What drives me nuts about Next-gen TV is the broadcasters think I'm going to settle for not being able to record it and watch it whenever and wherever I want to. I either get DVR capability or I'm not interested. I definitely think we need to get ahead of this and not let them control whether it can be recorded, or watched on other devices inside our own home, especially. I also think watching on portable devices outside home should be allowed too but I don't draw a line in the sand on this issue, the way I do on the ability to have DVR capability.
The trouble with DVRs has always been people fast forwarding through the commercials. If no one watches the commercials, broadcasters have no revenue stream, and if they have no revenue stream, they'll go bankrupt. Then we'll have no OTA TV. The trouble with streaming from home when away from home is that it can get around regional black outs, like for sports. Then, if I have a friend in Indianapolis, I can watch all my Indy Colts games here in Texas without paying for an expensive NFL package. But I'm pretty sure hackers will find a way around these restrictions, and I'm not even sure it would be illegal for someone streaming from their own home.
@ajlenze8 How to get people to watch commercials is up to the broadcast companies to figure out. There really hasn't been that many shows that for social reasons need to be watched live, so they can talk about them at the water cooler the next day. Some commercials are watched when using DVR, but if they suck, I will definitely fast forward them. The solution is to make better shows and choose better commercials. Easier said than done, but if they can't or won't do that, I'll get the content elsewhere anyways
Commercials when I was a kid were worth watching. We sang the jingles to Oscar Mayer hotdogs and bologna. How many licks to a Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop? Where's the Beef? When was the last time you saw a commercial for Lucky Charms? They are still magically delicious but now our airwaves are clogged BIG PHARMA. Now kids are watching ads for HIV medications and A1C crap. This is terrible! According to the CDC, as of 2021 only 31,626 people have received an a diagnosis for HIV in the US. Why the hell are we seeing this crap? I am not a doctor. I don't write prescriptions! Our healthcare program is screwed. If BIG PHARMA has this much money, perhaps they should lower the cost of medication!
@@frommatorav1 The trouble is that technology is better today. With a VCR, since you had to fast forward the tape to skip the commercial, it took some skill and effort, plus you tended to end up seeing a bit of the commercial or at least watch it sped up. Now, with better software (including AI), you can probably just check a box in your DVR settings, and your show gets recorded without commercials - if it's not happening yet, it soon will be. That's all fine - and believe me, I use every trick in the book to avoid commercials - but broadcasts only happen because of the income from those commericials. No commercials = no broadcast TV, except for PBS.
@@PeterC408 Just because I watched TV for a couple of decades before I started my avoiding commercials "career", it doesn't mean those commercials were better. It's just that we were forced to watch them so many times that they're burned into our brains. "Oh, I wish I were an Oscar Meyar wiener!" LAME! An old woman saying "Where's the beef?" a dozen times in 30 seconds. LAME! "He likes it, hey Mikey!" LAME! Every once in a while, there was a decent commercial, like the Mean Joe Greene Coke commercial, but they were extremely rare. The only consistently interesting commericals were movie trailers, but now you can watch them on demand. The reason there are so many drug commercials, is that the only watchers who don't avoid commercials are old people who still watch like we did 40 years ago, and they have a lot of health problems at their advanced age. That's also why there are a lot of investment and insurance commercials. "Liberty, liberty, liberty... Liberty!" STILL LAME!
I agree with this, but one thing I'll say is that ATSC 1.0 uses garbage 8VSB modulation that's very easy to interfere with. Often times using indoor antennas we need to open the window to stop it from buffering so much.
Okay but when you are tying your hands with an indoor antenna, ATSC 3.0 is not the solution... you need a drill bit that will enable you to get the antenna outside. Here is my antenna and I am getting 154 channels from 60 miles away across the entire San Francisco Bay (the long way). ua-cam.com/video/OE1pUIbcneA/v-deo.html
@@PeterC408 The issue is people have their hands tied and cannot use an outdoor antenna. Some people live in an apartment or in an HOA that bans the use of outdoor antennas. Before you comment I am aware HOA bans of outdoor antennas are illegal but most people do not have the money to start litigation against the HOA.
I don't have cable, dish, or even an antenna. I have not watched "traditional" TV for years. I also do not pay for any streaming services. Unless it is FREE streaming, I don't watch. I get all my news and entertainment from the internet from multiple sources so I am more informed than those who only watch main stream media. I don't even like social media, one sided censored crap. I want a movie? I find and download it. I am up to date with world news but really don't have the time to follow anything on "TV". I have been a lot happier that way. I honestly could not name a current TV show or series, and I am happy with that. I do enjoy your channel and watch it regularly. I kind of miss the old Kodi days, but don't even have time for that if it was working like it used to. I have a back log of downloaded movies I haven't had time to watch yet. I have a 65 inch flat screen that only gets turned on if company comes over otherwise I am watching on the PC or on my 40 inch in the bedroom free streaming or off of my PC. I am Gen X and just don't get or care about the current garbage. When you talk about hardware though, you got my attention.
Check out HayStack. It is a free app that plays the news from several different sources both right and left. Sure there are the occasional commercial but nothing compared to real TV or Cable. Great Channel.
I'm interested in the ATSC 3.0 converter box because I have two VHF local stations that cut out on me sometimes even with my 100 mile antenna. The new standard works better and I would love to have that. ATSC 1.0 doesn't give me that for these two stations, CBS and NBC!
We are all interested in getting more value for free, but ask yourself who's going to pay for it and .... why? No one is going to give you a stronger signal and better picture out of the kindness of their hearts. Who? Why?
Thank You so much for sharing what you use! We are planning on changing to internet only in September and in the meantime I am trying to decide what DVR set up to get and Tablo seems perfect! I also loved your Plex multi media library and I am wondering if your Tablo recordings are incorporated into your Plex media library? Can Plex use your Tablo quad as a tuner and record shows like it does with the HDHomerun?
You are most welcome. Over the years I have had many TV tuners, mostly Silicon Dust HomeRun units. I too was captivated by the ability to capture and display TV on my Synology NAS drive running PLEX. I chose not to store my TV video on Plex any longer. It was an unnecessary complication and not a better experience, just harder to maintain. Small 2TB drives are cheap, I just threw one in my Tablo and now that is fully standalone from the Plex. They Synology NAS is indeed a cool device and one that we use all the time. Get one with an Intel processor, its better for video ua-cam.com/video/atgntoWU3XA/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/l3JHTwWmFaE/v-deo.html
Here is a video on how I get things from my TABLO to my PLEX, on the rare occasion that I want to rip one from one to the other. ua-cam.com/video/34yqhInSIaI/v-deo.html
@@PeterC408 Thank you again! I had not seen that video and it makes sense why you keep the Tablo as a stand alone unit. I will do the same and it allows me to achieve my immediate goals of getting away from the outrageous cable bill and still be able to record my TV shows to watch when I want. With what we save, I can invest in a NAS drive and PLEX to organize and save all our precious memories and make them available to my kids. Now that they have grown up, they want to see the photos and movies that mom took over the years.
I much agree with you, but a point of clarification on the HDHomeRun which supports ATSC 3.0. You say it's $100 more for 2 tuners you can't use. Well... Those 3.0 tuners also receive 1.0, so you compare a 2 tuner device to a 4 tuner device.
Yes, very true and understood. I am just mad because I could see everyone was getting so excited for 4K TV but I had a strange feeling that the other shoe was yet to drop. Then there it was "Corporate Greed" trying to steal the airwaves that belong to the people. When I was a kid, there were only 13 channel or so. Everyone had a common experience. The next day, everyone had seen the new show, knew the new tag-line or was reenacting the catch, punch or jump we had seen the night before. I miss that.
@@PeterC408 Oh, I get why your upset. I am too. My opinion, albeit an unpopular one, is that even ATSC 1.0 was a step BACKWARDS! ATSC 1.0 channels don't navigate the terrain in my area well (read: at all) compared to analog. I'm in the frings of 3 TV markets. On analog, I used to be able, with a rotor, get it least 3 or 4 channels from each city. During the "Digital Transition"... I LOST them all. One station will come on weak, but only fall-early spring.when there is no leaves on the trees.
Let's see... the legacy TabloTV had a feature which the sunset'ed and grandfathered. It is not available on the new box but you can of course hit fast forward and I am getting really good at it. 😉
I have been an ATSC 3.0 fanboy due to the technical improvements compared to ATSC 1.0 you mentioned. Between DRM and the patent debacle I'm loosing faith it is every going to happen. We have always been an OTH family since we built the house in the mid 1980's. As far as internet access we have recently been able to upgrade from DSL to Fiber internet.
@@PeterC408 I signed the petition and sent a fact based message to the FCC about how, in my opinion, this violates many court rulings/FCC regulations regarding time shifting and accessibility. Poor and underserved communities will be hit the hardest by this if the tv networks are allowed to do this. In conclusion I said "OTA TV must be free and unobstructed for all so that it can serve it's purpose as intended to inform the public and promote public safety in the event of emergencies."
It is true, the whole reason for the FCC regulated OTA is for the underserved communities. It needs to be protected so that everyone has access to the news, education and emergency communications.
Sure, ATSC 3.0 works but it includes a provision for encryption which content providers are opting to turn on. This take our free airwaves and makes them private. Your box from China most likely does not have the further certification needed for decryption and, like millions of 4K TV sold over the past 5 years, will not work with these new channels.... ever! That is why I say No to encryption, a move that will likely delay the rollout of ATSC 3.0, so I am happy with my current tuner.
I do not have a DVR hooked up right now, I just watch TV live (80s throwback? I'm in my 20s haha). There's enough channels out there I like to watch I can find something. Plus fooling with recordings can get cumbersome (depending on the DVR I guess, the one I have is cheap). I'm not going to record a bunch of stuff. Also, a workaround to DRM if you want to record: just record off the analog output of your DVR box (if you're fine with 480i video). Either way there's no ATSC 3.0 in my area thankfully
Take a look at this ua-cam.com/video/xq7g2tMllic/v-deo.html This TV tuner / DVR records has 43 F.A.S.T. channels littered with 80's throwback shows and you can record them. Quincy, I Dream of Genie, Brady Bunch, Twilight Zone, Star Trek .... You build a great library of things to watch while you sleep and they are ready to go with the ability to skip commercials. Best money I've spent in the last year.
Europe uses DVB. ATSC 3.0 is a freak. It doesn't need a vote. It needs a bouncer to show it to the door. I like my NTSC TV. It's for a camera, tapes, library DVD's, and my free to air FTA Ku satellite box.
@@PeterC408 I'll look that up but I believe ATSC 3.0 includes 4K. If it is only 4K, that is a large ham bone to swallow and a giant step backward compared to ATSC 1.0, which supports several aspect ratios.
People will ask why should I pay more for no new programming, 4K that may never arrive, and live programming I will never watch. OTT is becoming the future NextgenTV is a doorstop. ATSC 1.0 will be with us till the end. (Or until you can't fix a Tivo anymore 🙃)
NextGenTV was only popular with two groups: 1) people who thought they were going to get better "Free TV" for free. 2) companies that saw the opportunity to get a free over the air sales channel on the tax payer dime. Neither one is going to happen. Project is doomed (at least or the near term). Just look at the channels we get now... we could do 1080P for years!!! Only PBS stepped up... everyone else is at 480 or 720P. To think we would all of a sudden get 4K for free... that was not going to happen.
I know this video is a year old and totally agree about ATSC 3.0. Your statement about using ATSC 1.0 since 2009 gave me a giggle! I've been using it since 1999! Yes, a very early adopter with a Sony Trinitron HDTV, their first HD model sold in the U.S. market with a SEPARATE HD tuner back when the networks, mostly ABC had one or two hours of HD per evening and only via antenna. Until recently, had three tv units in my house all connected to a rooftop antenna and internet. Got rid of two sets as there is little to watch, almost zero via OTA broadcasts, all commercials, lame programming, jewelry TV, weirdo religious channels, a lot of Spanish language and old reruns on most of the sub channels and other off beat channels. As a culture, we have too much screen time and should move on to other things. TEE VEE IS DEAD!
TV used to be a unifying experience. Everyone watched the same things the night before. From Evel (Evil) Knievel stunts to Happy Days, we all arrived the next day at work or school with the same experience from the night before. It was inclusive. It was Americana. Now we have divisive programming that breaks us into clubs: AppleTV, Hulu, Netflix, Disney and YES! There are too many commercials. Remember when Chuck Wooleryof the Dating Game would says, "See you in 2 and 2", he meant 2 minutes and 2 seconds, the length of a commercial break. Now it is just sickening. They are so long, I forget what I was watching! It is a little bit dead but we all are to blame.
@@kennixox262 This box also records 43 F.A.S.T. Channels (Free Ad Supported TV) super good content and it can be recorded and commercials skipped. It is worth a look. ua-cam.com/video/xq7g2tMllic/v-deo.html
Better signal but they ruined it...its like they don't want us getter channels for free. And if someone cracks the encryption they will come after all of us using the "illegal" tuners. No limit to their greed.
We are not getting their channels for FREE!! we are watching the ADVERTISEMENTS!!! They collect revenue for that. That's the business model. Now these greedy Fat-Cats want you to pay to watch their stupid, loud and ever longer stream of commercials so they can make more money. Someone can always "crack the encryption" but now they have made it illegal to talk about it. Remember the video streaming app, KODI ?? It became the new Fight Club. #1 rule, don't talk about KODI. Many famous UA-cam personalities lost their channels when this came down. Take a look at Blu-Ray. I have all my movies, including Blu-Ray, on my NAS drive and can enjoy them at the click of a button. I would love to make a video to show you all how I did it but I can't! The video would be flagged and the channel heavily scrutinized or shutdown. We often celebrate our freedom, but how free are we really? You better not tell someone how to transfer their movie collection to enjoy on a tablet, phone or modern PC. You want to see the limits of our freedom, try and buy a pair of prescription glasses without a prescription - that's the limit of our freedoms. It's pathetic. Greed indeed. How did they get the "gag-order"? They have made it illegal to "profit from or cause financial harm" to the content owners.
The Mint Mobile accounts (regardless of the contract) all contain 10GB of HotSpot data so that can help when you are out and about but it is not enough to run you house with. The best way to get 5G home internet is from one of the network owners (Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T). Trying to get access from a vendor that is buying access and reselling (Visible, Straight Talk, Consumer Cellular, Tello, etc.). Those guys are going to be looking for abuse and if you get it to work, it won't work for long.
It is a game changer. If you get a good number of channels, there is some great content out there. I upgraded from the dual-tuner version that I had for years to the Quad tuner just a few months ago. I went from a 500GB drive to 2TB
I heard you say you cut back on internet? Wifi? I pay for Good WiFi internet 500 down 300 up with stary internet in my bldg in Manhattan. Same price as TMobile 50.00 I also have TMobile cellular all 5g with 2lines with 55 plan with free Netflix 70.00 total. Works perfectly anyplace I go.
Sorry, I am not sure what we are talking about here. WiFi is Local Area Networking and is quite different than the Internet but many people call Internet, WiFi. As an IT guy, I hate when people say the Network is down when it is the Internet that is down. My networks don't go down but the Internet sometimes does. Many research and government buildings are "air-gapped" meaning no Internet connection but they can still print and get to their servers. Network and not Internet. There are some good deals out there but your Netflix for example is limited to 720P. I pay extra to get 4K with Dolby 5.1
Eventually, probably, but there is no use waiting or spending money for the current 3.0 implementation. It's too volatile right now and will only get worse before it gets better. Mine will work until 2027, guaranteed.
Unfortunately Tablo has discontinued the good DVRs now that the "New" dvr is available. Which is easier but doesn't allow for streaming outside of the home. There may be an opening for someone with the skills to build a tablo clone of the quad dvr
I like the Mint mobile idea however with my T-Mobile sub I get free Netflix, Apple TV, and MLB all of which save me some big $. Does Mint mobile offer any of those perks?
Good point. No they don't, just the lowest price possible for the same thing. Free stuff and bundling were designed to create just this kind of loyalty. Look carefully those "perks", sometimes this are limited or do not last very long. AppleTV+, for example, only lasts for 6mo. I am a big fan fan of TM, but look who just purchased Mint. With TM we were getting 5GB of data and paying for more data and $15 to for "FREE" international calling. How is it free if I am paying for it? This is saving me $30 per month/ per phone * 6 phones + all the extras we were paying for. That said, if you're happy, I'm happy.
@@PeterC408 I get it and I'd have to sit down with a calculator and figure it out, I know if I have to pay for an MLB subscription it's $125 a season so that's pretty significant. Netflix has no limits and they are also offering an MLS subscription too. Would be tough to part with all those, but I like having choices. Thanks for the great channel.
Remember that Mint mobile also doesn't work in Canada or Mexico if you travel there. Otherwise, it's essentially T-Mobile at a low price... except you get deprioritized under T-mobile customers... which isn't very often.
Things change. You can travel anywhere in the World. You can call Canada and Mexico for free from the US and if you travel to Canada it will cost you 6cents for calls and 2cents for texts. Travel to Mexico it is the same. See this web page www.mintmobile.com/features/international-roaming/ the only thing I don't like is that I have to buy travel credits but there is no credit check because it is pay as you go. I can't really find any fault with it. Deprioritized?? What my google lookup will be .001ms slower because some people paying $100/mo are near by? I am okay with that for the huge saving.
I don't see ATSC 3.0 becoming popular because the younger generation isn't interested in owning a TV. My local Fox affiliate has started doing social media programing and news via social media (and also their apps) and I see that becoming the norm. 5-10 years from now, I see if where if I want to watch NBC/CBS etc, I get Peacock or Paramount+ and an app from the local affiliates for news content and that's it, no more broadcasting over the airwaves. I know quite a few people that watch only social media content and the occasional movie on their phone or laptop. I see another norm where people either don't consume content or for those who do, they only watch YT or Tik Tok.
I appreciate your comment, but I see OTA going through a resurgence. Sure I can get entertainment 50 different ways but which climate change happening, local weather events have taken on a whole new meaning. OTA is the best way to get local news, sports and weather and it is FREE. You can't get good weather on TikTok or YT plus, there is a huge aging population that will soon retire and want to return to the basics. They want to lower their phone plans and get spending under control. This is right up their alley and with programming that they remember, want and respect.
@@PeterC408 Get good weather on YT? There's a guy who lives near me, Ryan Hall who does arguably the best weather content I've ever seen. Not up to the hour but the best. My dad is 65 and retiring now and choosing to NOT consume media (no TV, limited YT, no movies etc). My brother and sister choose not to consume media of any kind. I know more people who don't watch TV programs or movies. They'd rather go our and do things, and when they do watch that occasional whatever, its a YT something or a Tik Tok on their phone while they're out and about.
The only bad part is that these things are always a give and take, if they don't get anything there is no way that this technology is going to advance. Here is what I think is going to replace ATSC 3.0, FAST IPTV. ua-cam.com/video/QuznZ4lOdts/v-deo.html
We don't need it, by the time we have a 4K system in place 8K will be the standard anyway. What's the point? Why can't each station have their own broadcast app? Most of the stations already have one set up to carry their news. They could carry their entire days programming. I do realize that most of the stations are looking for a way to make extra money but I'm not paying for TV, that's just not going to happen. In Atlanta I grew up with three television stations that went off of the air at 11:00 and I could always find something to watch till then. Now I have hundreds of channels of nothing but pure junk, can't find a damn thing to watch. My TV mostly watches me nowadays, maybe I could just use it as a 55-inch picture frame.
I agree. People have been holding off on getting a TV tuner for years because of ATSC 3.0 and now it looks it was only moving forward powered by corporate greed. Here is a TV tuner that chose to stay at ATSC 1.0 and offer a new type of Internet TV recording over 2 virtual tuners. This is pretty darn cool ua-cam.com/video/xq7g2tMllic/v-deo.html
There will be no change over until both parties agree. Companies are not going to want to spend more money to give you a better signal and picture for free. Look at NTSC 1.0, it supports up to 1080P, but very few channels are there. I have over 100 channels and I can only think of 2 or 3 that are at 1080P. 5 years is a long time in technology.
These are our airwaves. Dedicated to the people. I was raised Capitalist but some things we don't touch. OTA and libraries are not up for corporate greed.
@@PeterC408 I'm in total agreement with you, Peter. Radio and TV OTA broadcasts are public domain elements, along with libraries, as you say. Should we charge for necessary elements such as water, the air that we breath, and educational learning? Those first two take care of our physical needs. The latter is a mental need. I can see having to pay for the infrastructure to deliver those elements; but don't charge us for the natural products themselves.
I don't mind the network owners having a few pay-per-view subchannels for big boxing matches or maybe first-run movies, but the rest is FCC OTA licensed broadcasting that (as I understand it) they are contracted to supply as free in a major way. They probably want to transition everything that goes to cable companies for re-broadcast to OTA DRM-controlled broadcast channels so they keep it 'in-house', but doing that will cause the loss of rebroadcasting revenue they currently get from selling programming to cable networks.
The broadcast airwaves are public domain with conditions applied to their use by the FCC, that I agree on. The major media companies could just abandon them for all-internet streaming, but I'd think if they were smart they'd go all broadcast and use a few subchannels for PPV, first-run movies, and similar (there probably is a way to do it in the ATSC 3.0 architecture, I'm not familiar with the whole thing). That would streamline & simplify things for a media company, getting rid of a lot of the intermediary contracts and hardware associated with a cable service relationship and/or internet providers (as 5G services take off). But 'silly me' always looks for the cheapest, simplest way to do things, a concept that doesn't seem to make sense in the world of media moguls.
Unfortunately Comcast owns NBC. It cannot be helped. Some people might have just given up television all together. I just wish local channels were locally & independently owned like how it was in the past. Most local channels are owned by big media such as Comcast NBC Universal, Nexstar, Sinclair, etc.
Yep, my own little SF affiliate KTVU is owned by Disney!! I was wondering why they were making segway about every movie and talking it up like it was gold. My weather guy rides every new ride as they come out. FOX has got to STOP! They are poisoning the country.
ADTH is not shipping they are playing games I have not recived my package and they keep telling me that the shipper hasn't sent it out. At this point I think they'er scamming the people in the USA
Why are they Encrypted their channels...it is sick.... that is why I am not going the locals like NBC....it is all plexlated....i just disconnected the antenna... altogether 😮...more reason to charge... GREAT 😮....i am going with the net all the way 😮
You are correct. My first hard drive was 30MB and you had to upgrade your power supply just to support it. Not 30GB, 30 Mega Bytes. And it cost $600! You bring up a good point and that is that legislation may need to change as technology changes what is possible. #Gun_Lobby
Is this a question or a comment? Roku does support the HD Homerun but that is not to say that it is not without its challenges. The application is STILL in beta and I hear that if you are not using it with Plex to record, there can be some recording issues. Here is an interesting blog post from Silicon Dust themselves on the HD HomeRun www.silicondust.com/hdhomerun-channel-for-roku-now-with-dvr/
all i want is a 3.0 tuner. it doesn't have to have all the bells and whistles, doesn't need dvr, doesn't need network connectivity. just needs to be like the basic 1.0 tuners we already have
Without the ability to record, we are watching LIVE TV once again. Many of us has moved past that and found that time shifted is so much better. Enforcing DRM under the guise of copy protection is a joke. Anything can be copied. Take a look at Blu-Ray, movie enthusiasts have spent money building collections that can't even be watched on a modern PC. Times change and we deserve the right to move the collections we have purchased to the next level. I have all my movies on my NAS drive, but can't make a video to show you how to do it!!! The video would be flagged and shutdown in a minute. Freedom my ass! You want to see the limits of our freedom, try and buy a pair of prescription glasses without a valid prescription - that's the limit of our freedoms. It's pathetic.
I wouldn't buy any new equipment now. ATSC 1.0 will be available until at least 2027, and as far as I know there's currently ZERO ATSC 3.0 content that's any better than ATSC 1.0. I have a SiliconDust HDHomeRun Flex 4K, which is capable of receiving ATSC 3.0. When I first installed it, it received ATSC 3.0 just fine, but the channels looked exactly the same as the ATSC 1.0 channels. Now it doesn't receive any ATSC 3.0 channels because of the DRM problem, but who cares if the content is the same as ATSC 1.0. I know that SiliconDust is working on the DRM problem, but since I can still use it with ATSC 1.0 and the content is the same, I'm not too worried. Maybe I'll worry about it again in 2027.
I am interested to know where the date of 2027 came from, gut or did you hear that somewhere. If so, more to my point; The content is the same and will probably remain the same unless Comcast manages to steal the public airwaves and make their own network atop our publicly funded airwaves. Now is the time to buy ATSC 1.0 when they are selling off existing inventory for $100 instead of waiting for the new $300 tuners to work properly. One of the products I highlighted for Prime Day sales was the 2-tuner TabloTV for $99!! Many people were duped into believing were going to get 4K broadcast for free. I don't blame them, it is nice to have good hopes, always, but that's now how capitalism works. PBS already comes in 1080P with ATSC 1.0, it is one of the few. Local TV stations need ratings and cable pays them to retransmit their local signals. We are going to have a hard time competing with that.
@@PeterC408 the FCC recently ruled broadcasters who broadcast a 3.0 signal must also simulcast a 1.0 signal that is substantially the same as the 3.0 signal until July 17, 2027. They'll supposedly begin reviewing this rule in 2026 to see if they need to extend this mandate beyond that date. I hope this helps.
@@jimwoodle2626 Wow! That's great. There's no point in using encryption if I can watch the same thing in 720P. Is this documented on the FCC site. By 2027. I will get a new 3.0 tuner, I'm just not going to pay extra to get emerging technology.
@@PeterC408 yes, the ruling is posted on FCC.gov. I read it, but honestly didn't understand all of it. Fortunately, there were several articles written about it. If you google atsc 3.0 "substantially similar" rule, you should see quite a few articles. They were all posted the last week in June.
Once you take the cheese out of the mouse trap, the mouse loses interest. They were only interested in stealing out OTA network and using it for themselves to make more money. Sick people. I think you should only be able to make so much money, after that drink Margarettas or work for the public good, your choice. It reminds me of the BF Skinner, behavioral science experiments with the Rats and the food. Some rats became so focused on gathering food that they would continue to gather it even after it started affecting their own lives and living environments. Stupid rats! People do the same thing.
@@1thinkhealthy at first I didn't because I have TMobile and where I live the reception is crappy. But outside of my home area I love mint for the price I pay
Yes, that is true as I stated but then it goes back to the prices you saw before. My plan from before was limited to 4GB/mo and cost me over $30. Now I can go to $15 and get more data. No brainer.
Actually, I am very encouraged. Not only did people stand up and were counted but we made a difference. Encryption is on the chopping block. Luckily for us, each channel needs to be reapproved each year. We can unite and make life very difficult for these channels. No encryption, is our mantra.
Comcast is bad but I picked them at random. Disney owns ABC, ESPN, A+E, MARVEL, Lifetime, National Geographic and the History Channel. The only problem is that Power & Opportunity quickly turns to Corruption; soon they start sharing their political agendas, editorializing the NEWS and hiding facts. I think the NEWS needs to go back to FACTS and TRUTH. We need to hold the news Sacred. Stations and station owners should be held accountable for delivering accurate unbiased news. I always wondered why my local ABC affiliate would talk about their trip to Disneyland or the movie they just saw, this is not an editorial comment this as an advertisement during the news broadcast!! Shame. Pete Rose is still my hero!
It is a political football. Companies are not going to invest in giving us a better signal for FREE!!! They want to take our airwaves and use them as their own publicly funded Wireless infrastructure. Luckily, we've caught this in time and are making a lot of noise about it but if we remove the encryption option the money will go away too. I am okay with that. Most channels broadcast in 720P (or 480) and it works well. How about more than a handful putting out 1080P or all standardizing to UHF instead of Hi-VHF which is harder to pickup.
ATSC 3.0 will fail. Already televisions aren't spending the extra money to put it in their televisions. It was always about DRM, sure it fixed a few 1.0 bugs, but it was never about UHD or any of the other carrots.
If TV broadcasters wanted us to have a better picture, they could go all the way up to 1080i with ATSC 1.0 but most of them are still broadcasting in 480P. Why? Because they are doing the bare minimum for OTA customers and they don't care about us at all. Chuck Wollery from the Dating Game used to say, "See you back in 2 and 2" because commercial breaks used to be 2minutes and 2seconds. Commercial breaks now over 5 minutes. Don't get me started! I can barely stand to watch TV on Cable or OTA without the ability to fast forward through this sea of pharmaceutical ads. That should be outlawed. I am not a doctor! . Doctors hate it too. Everyone thinks the are a doctor now. They need to make the medication cheaper and go through proper channels to advertise and stop inflating the costs of medication by advertising to the wrong audience.
It's a beautiful game. Women don't play like they did 20 years ago, its a whole new ball game. This is real soccer. Also these talented athletes have dedicated 10+ years of their lives to get to a World Cup and play for 90 minutes. It is the very least we can do to watch. Check out the French game against Brazil and tell me that it was not an exciting game.
The World Cup is an international event. You root for your home country, whether it's women or men competing. BTW, there's nothing wrong with the women's soccer game, either.
"Clickbait is a text or a thumbnail link that is designed to attract attention and to entice users to follow that is deceptive, sensationalized, or otherwise misleading." I simply explained why I am not going to jump at the chance to buy more expensive hardware that does not yet support nor may possibly ever support the new standard. The title is exactly what I expressed, so I am going with no, by no means is this clickbait.
Watch the video. ATSC 3.0 is mired down by corporate greed and encryption. Sure it's free, if encrypted signals are free? It is the worst case of corporate greed since Purdue Pharma got everyone addicted to Opioids. F-ing Bastards!!! Watch PainKiller on Netflix. So much better than suing them, making them wish they were dead! 😬 Lol. 😄
While I applaud Lon & Tyler keeping the FCC consumer friendly, your's is a scare video. You forgot to detail 3.0's technical improvements plus features & that the transition from 1.0 to 3.0 is 2027. For this reason I recommend not buying more 1.0 equipment and not buying 3.0 equipment until these initial DRM issues are sorted. Lon referenced an online article that detailed DRM. DRM restrictions are implemented in software & that software may be updated based on FCC rulings. I trust the FCC to remain consumer friendly and look forward to 2027 and a new TV.
While I applaud the advancement in technology, I always teach my kids to look for the motivation. Why would a for profit company invest in giving you a better picture for free? If you can't answer that, you are either looking at something that won't happen or you don't fully understand. I think Comcast and other content owners saw a chance to grab a free network and make it their own. Shut it down and a better day will come for OTA.
The OTA networks are competing against streaming services, many of which are 4K capable. 1.0's VSB modulation has problems that 3.0 overcomes, reception range will increase. I trust the FCC to prevent 'for profits' from grabbing the OTA network while respecting the broadcaster's concern over piracy, just as was done with cable, DVD & Blu-ray. I'm willing to accept a few limited DRM restrictions, as long as this does not stop the introduction of 3.0 DVRs (preferrably inexpensive!).
My biggest concern at the moment is, there will be no quality content on the networks for the next few years, due to the writers/actors strike! I've been DVRing approx 10 network shows a week for the last few years, shows that my wife does not want to watch, that's a real concern that no one is talking about.
Now they have made Cloud-DVRs with content expiration dates. Everyday I am losing as many programs as I am recording. Writers were not getting paid, Doctors are not getting paid, yet the consumer keeps shelling out more and more. We don't need to regulate our citizens, we need to regulate our legal system, insurance and pharmaceutical companies.
The last Head of the FCC was Ajit Pai, Verizon Lawyer appointed to rubber stamp every piece of legislation in the interest of Big Business!! Trust no one and question everyone in power! Corruption and Opportunity are so much closer than you think. Regulation brings, certification which adds costs and time that will limit productivity and cut out the entrepreneur. The Internet drove some much innovation because it was unregulated. Now Ajit Pai has removed Net Neutrality, so your ISP can see your traffic, monitor it, store it and profit from its sale. Get mad!
If they take free tv away from Americans there will be a revolt, LOL. Although most likely there will be black market providers for this type of tv too.
It is hard to black market free. The administration was trying to outlaw VPNs because corporations need to know what we are doing in order to throttle us. We lost Net-Neutrality and now they are very interested gathering data. We have all seen that posting videos of our kids could lead to deep-fake audio begging for money - who would have dreamed that!!? We have no idea what we are giving away!
Many people don't see anything they want on free tv, especially under the age of 40. I know the media wants to wishcast NextgenTV but it doesn't have the shows a lot of people want.
@@PeterC408 I don't even need Netflix, just free streaming services with movies (but I assume those services will go behind paywalls at some time in the future).
poor info with bad takes. you assume everyone is in a good market along with good reception. Most are in the sticks and can barley pull in anything. ATSC3.0 is a way better signal and quality . i receive 3.0 channels where the 1.0 versions i can not.
I'm in Los Angeles with a straight line-of-sight view of the broadcast towers of all the majors (ABC, NBC, CBS, PBS, FOX, KMEX, Telemundo, etc) on top of Mt. Wilson (5000 ft up). Almost all have switched to ATSC 3.0 per FCC website but none are broadcasting it out right now or its encrypted. Also, last week I walked into a Best Buy store and the staff knows nothing about NExtgen TVs beyond 'its coming soon.' No labels on the TVs I looked at either stating they were NEXTGEN/ATSC 3.0
ATSC 3.0/NextGen TV indeed is a huge mess!

Thanks for update. I’ve had the Tablo Quad for 4 plus years now and love it! Super easy to use, well worth it!
Who? Why?
Awesome video brother. Thanks for sharing. Keep the content coming. Hope you have an incredible week. Much love and RESPECT
Much appreciated

Me too. No borks!
I ordered a tuner box from China It dose work. The backwards compatibility is not the best.

Those guys are going to be looking for abuse and if you get it to work, it won't work for long.

why dont you list the new white Tablo TV?
It's on its way.
I gotta get a Tablo Tuner in my life
It is a game changer. If you get a good number of channels, there is some great content out there. I upgraded from the dual-tuner version that I had for years to the Quad tuner just a few months ago. I went from a 500GB drive to 2TB
@@PeterC408 That's awesome. I'll definitely be trying that out. Yes, I get a lot of channels even though I live 30 miles away from the city.
@mkostial05 I'm 53miles from the city and I get 154 channels with this antenna amzn.to/3OEUoL0
@@PeterC408 That's amazing!!
Hello I live here in Illinois I get my signals out of Chicago I don't know what to expect from atsc 3.0 or next gen on January 22nd 2024
Time will tell. Let us know. I am interested to know if you get a better picture or run into encrypted channels.
Aren't they going to phase out ATSC 1.0 as they roll out ATSC 3.0? If that's the case, then what's the use of trying to hang on to ATSC 1.0?
Eventually, probably, but there is no use waiting or spending money for the current 3.0 implementation. It's too volatile right now and will only get worse before it gets better. Mine will work until 2027, guaranteed.
Unfortunately Tablo has discontinued the good DVRs now that the "New" dvr is available. Which is easier but doesn't allow for streaming outside of the home. There may be an opening for someone with the skills to build a tablo clone of the quad dvr
They may have pivoted but have announced a BIG Sale on refurbished units, so you can get one that way. I will find a link and send it
I like the Mint mobile idea however with my T-Mobile sub I get free Netflix, Apple TV, and MLB all of which save me some big $.
MY VCR STILL RECORDS JUST FINE.
Lol. Mine records 4 at a time, organizes and titles them, and skips commercials. There's always a next level.
Stop the greedy bastards, write a letter to the FCC.
@@PeterC408 Thanks
You have NO CHOICE- in 5 years, ATSC 1.0 GOES AWAY! MY ADTH has 1.0 AND 3.0- I'm all set for the changeover!
I forsee all OTA networks going to streaming for pay. Sadly.
GREAT 😮....i am going with the net all the way 😮
NTSC 1.0 is still here for the foreseeable future. And responses like yours may keep it from happening altogether
wow all that stuff you recorded imagine if that was all video tape you would need a big room for the storage lol.
You are correct. My first hard drive was 30MB and you had to upgrade your power supply just to support it. Not 30GB, 30 Mega Bytes. And it cost $600! You bring up a good point and that is that legislation may need to change as technology changes what is possible. #Gun_Lobby
HD Homerun dosen't work on Rouk
Is this a question or a comment? Roku does support the HD Homerun but that is not to say that it is not without its challenges. The application is STILL in beta and I hear that if you are not using it with Plex to record, there can be some recording issues. Here is an interesting blog post from Silicon Dust themselves on the HD HomeRun www.silicondust.com/hdhomerun-channel-for-roku-now-with-dvr/
The encryption stuff is atrocious!!
all i want is a 3.0 tuner. it doesn't have to have all the bells and whistles, doesn't need dvr, doesn't need network connectivity. just needs to be like the basic 1.0 tuners we already have
Without the ability to record, we are watching LIVE TV once again.
Believe me, it's going to be extended another 10 years. There's no way they'll shut it off by 2027
It's not going to be a success. I rather let my tvs upscale the OTA channels. 3.0 is expensive for networks to upgrade their equipment. 😂.

Yes, that is true as I stated but then it goes back to the prices you saw before. My plan from before was limited to 4GB/mo and cost me over $30. Now I can go to $15 and get more data. No brainer.
Say good bye to free ota tv.
Actually, I am very encouraged. Not only did people stand up and were counted but we made a difference. Encryption is on the chopping block. Luckily for us, each channel needs to be reapproved each year. We can unite and make life very difficult for these channels. No encryption, is our mantra.
Looks like it's time to break up Comcast.
6.99 a month😢 we're talking free tv fool not paid
New tuner costs $0.00/mo
Yes they are trying to get things fixed
It is a political football. Companies are not going to invest in giving us a better signal for FREE!!! They want to take our airwaves and use them as their own publicly funded Wireless infrastructure. Luckily, we've caught this in time and are making a lot of noise about it but if we remove the encryption option the money will go away too. I am okay with that. Most channels broadcast in 720P (or 480) and it works well. How about more than a handful putting out 1080P or all standardizing to UHF instead of Hi-VHF which is harder to pickup.
Love family guy
Stewie!

So much better than suing them, making them wish they were dead! 😬 Lol. 😄
Its not you are under Rock?
