"This even smaller piece of plastic junk has a special chip in it that allows you to receive these special 4K video signals" You can just imagine how many buzzwords they can fit in an hour or a half.
I'm impressed with the audio quality there is with this presentation; especially so seeing that brick wall in the background. Seeing such a hard-wall, one could assume the audio would sound akin to being in a shower-stall; but not so with this production. Here in the US, there are many on-camera news talents doing their presentations from their homes/apartments because of the concerns from the COVID-19 Pandemic; where the audio with some I've seen/heard sounding atrocious; yet, they are well-paid TV professionals that are unable to make their TV audio sound as good as what Tyler has done here.
The SiliconDust HDHomeRun 4K tuners DO support standalone DVR/PVR setups on PCs. I'm using one now with NextPVR and SiliconDust's BDA driver software on a HTPC. Once you plug the tuner into your network and install the BDA driver on your PC, the tuner appears just like any other USB TV tuner using the BDA driver standard even though it isn't physically plugged into a USB port. Really neat stuff. With NextPVR recordings, you will be lacking audio on any of the ATSC3.0 channels as NextPVR doesn't yet support AC-4 audio playback. But this isn't a problem because I use NextPVR to record these stations and then use an AC-4 audio enabled version of ffmpeg to transcode the videos to use AC-3 audio during playback. For folks who want to use ffmpeg for playback or transcoding of ATSC3.0 streams, here's a link to the AC-4 audio enabled version that I built a few days ago. www.dropbox.com/s/4n99mhmnornbh1h/ffmpeg-ac4-msys2-static.zip?dl=1 Many thanks to Paul B. Mahol for adding the AC-4 decoding to ffmpeg. The archive contains 64-bit binaries so they will only work on 64-bit editions of Windows. For folks who want to run 32 bit binaries or to run ffmpeg on Linux, the source code for this AC-4 audio enabled version of ffmpeg can be found here: github.com/richardpl/FFmpeg/tree/ac4
I love watching Tyler's videos because he always brings me back to reality and makes me realize that I should not go out and buy a new TV yet! I'll just keep using my 6 year old Samsung with only a 60" screen and 3 HDMI ports and live with it until this new Tech gets established. First world problems, eh?
Truth and Quality , Practical and Useful Information. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ You are correct , be one of the first and lay out some Big Cash as many others will do , or wait for time to pass , pay less and have more choices/options. Here is something to think about. When you get rid of your still working Tv's that are in good condition. Donate them to some one on a fixed income.
My TV is well over a decade old and works fine. I didn't see a reason to buy a new one, regardless of whether I saw this video or not. Buying a new TV when there are no ATSC 3.0 stations in my area seems a bit like buying deep-sea-diving gear when there are no deep seas around here.
Hello Antenna Man I’m a Senior widow that first I’m shutting down Satellite TV because it’s become to expensive especially when a monthly income. I watch you and trust you to guide me to what I need to get A Good TV signal I’m about 0 miles North of New Orleans. I saw your Gen Tv video not sure about that so I got couple months so I appreciate your advice. Thank You
Launching ATSC 3.0 is a big msitake we need to wait for a Backwards compatible 4K standard like we did with Color in the 50's, and the fact we're not shows the FCC learned nothing from the massive Faliure that was the 2009 Digital Transition. also if you remeber back in the 2000's they told us that ATSC 1.0 was so much better than Analog NTSC, and we all know that was a load of Bull so I'm very untrusting of ATSC 3.0's claims
I think the FCC learned about the flaws of 1.0 and fixed it with 3.0. The problem is they used 8VSB modulation on 1.0 instead of OFDM. If they had used OFDM, 3.0 probably would have been backwards compatible but it's not.
The actual problem is the 8VSB modulation,it's very finniky. COFDM modulation is more robust. In example,I have been to Taiwan and they rejected 8VSB due to serious multipath interference with ATSC. They were about the use ATSC until the very last min they switched to DVB-T,which uses OFDM.
Antenna Man Even if 1.0 was OFDM, it would have used MPEG TS, which is inferior to, and not compatible with, the IP backend of 3.0. The IP system allows for real-time picture frame rate and resolution changes; with MPEG TS, the tuner technically has to re-tune the station each time you switch things. Also, the IP interface allows for cell companies to license some of the 6 MHz for more capacity. So we'd need new equipment, anyway. I suspect that DVB-T3 will soon exist with an IP backend, using the new VVC video codec instead of the now-obsolete HEVC codec in ATSC 3.0. DVB-T2 uses MPEG TS, and cell carriers need their bandwidth...
ATSC 1.0 is much better than analog NTSC ever was. NTSC gave me at best 10 low res channels with lots of snow and other problems. ATSC 1.0 while not perfect gives me 50 channels with picture perfect quality. Looking forward to even better ATSC 3.
Really appreciate your videos! Lots of great information. An update for you. I’m in the Baltimore Market and WNUV ch 54/The CW station will go live March 9th here. Sinclair has cooperative agreements with Hearst/WBAL TV ch 11NBC and Scripps owned ABC affiliate WMAR and another broadcaster possibly WMPB to carry the sub channels of WNUV as well as the 1.0 main signal of WNUV. So we will monitor this. Thanks again and have a great weekend!
Interesting. Thanks for the update. I'll have to contact the guys at Sinclair to see if I can get some behind the scenes footage. I was going to do this in Pittsburgh but covid was very bad at the time.
@@AntennaMan Thanks! I also used your information to improve my reception. I will message later you on Facebook to tell you what I did. But I have a question about a Channel Master signal amplifier I want to buy I saw you use the other day--Thanks!
I always learn so much from your vids. I assume low priced tv's will eventually have the necessary receiver built in, too. Please let us know more about this transition in the future. Thank you!
7:04 I live in that area and my indoor antenna only picks up 12 channels. Its a ClearStream Outdoor but used indoors. Usually I can pick up 45-60 channels with the other antenna.
Based on that lower bitrate = fringe area is more like analog was with static. Still watchable unlike the current have it or don’t. I will be SO GLAD when these tuners come down in price. $200+ is a lot to pay.
Truth and Quality , Practical and Useful Information. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The ATSC 3.0 , www.redzonereceiver.tv/shop. Model RZR-1400 has come down in price , is now $900.00 dollars.
If your local ATSC 3.0 market is like the one I'm near (Nashville), you might want to wait to get a new tuner until the kinks are worked out. I keep up with a forum in which members are testing out ATSC 3.0 reception in Nashville. Some of them are dealing with instability or audio issues. I had originally wanted to get one myself, but after seeing their issues, I'll hold on to my 1.0 equipment for now.
Hi Tyler I am concerned about the new requirements forcing me to give up my TiVo DVR with Lifetime service. I have two TiVo DVR‘s that are using the current tuner. I’ve paid $400 for the TiVo lifetime service for each of my DVR‘s. What do I do when the current 1.0 service is discontinued?
2:25 I will not need to replace my antennas. I have the wired and plastic ones I bought to improve indoor reception. Oh and I have box ones. Like about $100 each. I have heard of Locast which is like buying an "antenna" through an app. But $60 for the year... 3:11 more affordable tv tuners will come on market soon. My target price $60 which is what I would pay for Locast app for a year. Also good thing old atsc 1.0 and 2.0 will still broadcast. Oh wait 3:31 they skipped ATSC 2.0???
From what I understand, when stations move to ATSC 3.0 they have to share an ATSC 1.0 channel with another station which means adding mode subchannels onto an existing 1.0 station. Are people losing subchannels or getting degraded picture quality on ATSC 1.0 when their market goes to ATSC 3.0? I just found out my local station WSTM Syracuse NY is switching to ATSC 3.0 on March 11.
The FCC requires the subchannels to stay for five years as well so none should go away. The picture quality will be reduced when multiple stations are shoved on a single RF channel.
Antenna Man Only the.1's need to stay on the air for five years. Subchannels are technically exempt, though they'll probably remain on air, as has occurred in markets who have implemented it. Hopefully they got really good encoders!
@@AntennaMan Except 96% are already the lowest resolution possible (blurry 480p), I have only 1 720P subchannel and that is because it is rebroadcast channel for Fox TV since no one can get the main Fox channel which is on some island 36 miles away. What you just said is exactly why ATSC 1.0 is going no where. Channels may shift around but that is it.
@@donbest5024 I get anywhere from 2 (typical) to 6 sub-channels (ION) with 3 being shopping ones, Fox has 5 sub-channels, CW has 4 sub-channels, PBS and MeTV have 3 sub-channels. I only have 1 that is 720p, the MNT/Fox one.
I got one of the HD Homerun tuners and connected it to my 8-element flat-panel deep-fringe UHF antenna w/pre-amp. I realize that I am in deep fringe territory here in western Oklahoma, 78 miles from the transmitters in Oklahoma City, but I am getting a really reliable, solid signal from a few stations, while some are only receivable on rare occasion, which is to be expected. As far as ASTC 3.0 goes, one of the stations down there is broadcasting all of the ATSC 3 feeds that are available from the other stations on channel 19. I can only receive this transmission on occasion, only when the atmosphere and conditions are just right, so any reception benefits that ATSC 3.0 will bring, I am just not seeing them. Yet. Maybe they are not up to full power, I don't know, I am just a nerd like yourself who likes to tinker and see what's out there that I might be able to pick up. I really enjoy your channel, keep up the good work!
No. They issued coupons because last time it was mandated broadcasters transitioned to ATSC 1.0. This is a voluntary transition. We're still a good 5-10 years before this thing really takes off anyway. That's plenty of time for someone to save $50 for a converter box.
We had a few stations in Kansas City launch 3.0 this week. The launch made one channel go blank but a channel rescan brought it back on what I assume is a 1.0 signal.
Tuners will get cheaper, and right now, it's just simulcasting.1's. Not even the better colors are being used, yet, and chances are, your TV couldn't manage them, anyway. Bide your time.
@@EMichaelBall : Unless you're lucky enough have some stations simulcasting in ATSC 3.0 using 1080p@60 fps like in the Phoenix market and a few others. You may see an improvement in PQ over its ATSC 1.0 broadcast in those situations. ...

For at least a couple of years, they'll mostly just be simulcasting the ATSC 1.0 .1's and nothing else. There won't be much else to the standard for a while, and chances are your TV's can't support the improved colors in the standard. So save up for college, instead, because student debt is no joke. That said, I can't wait for the cheap AWARN (location-specific emergency alerting) tuners; that's the real game-changer in 3.0!
The NTSC standard was introduced in 1941, and 68 years later replaced by ATSC. People were forced to replace their televisions, creating considerable growth in the Chinese economy. Now, rather than maintaining a broadcast standard for an extended period, we are being told to replace our incompatible televisions with a new standard that will allow broadcasters methods to charge for the service while still inundating us with commercials, and further building the Chinese economy. All this in only about 30 years after the entire country (with a few minor exceptions) was forced to throw out NTSC standard televisions.
Technology advances quickly. Current tv sets will just need a set top box. It's not like you have to replace the whole thing. ATSC 1.0 allowed for paid OTA TV as well. It never happened. The government requires the main .1 channel of any broadcast tv channel to be free and open to the public. That's always been the rule. No one was interested in paid OTA.
Truth and Quality Practical and Useful Information. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NTSC was real loooooooong in the tooth. ------ China did not come along into Tv manufacturing business until many years later after 1941. And any way Japan moved in to the Tv manufacturing business long before China. The French were on the air with 809 line high definition Tv long before any one else had Hi Def Tv. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ When NTSC standard was settled on in 1941 we went with Analog Video and FM Audio. In and around 1941 we had the technology to go with FM Video , this would have made a much improved picture over Analog Video.

I certainly hope they put out some good quality converter boxes, because I intend to keep my 4:3 27 inch picture tube for the foreseeable future. I also hope that markets like mine (Kansas City) which are all UHF, remain so.
@@CrossForum My problem is that would entail making an entierly new entertinament center in my living room. And for me... much of it would be a waste, because 95% of what I watch is 4:3 programming.
2:17 It kind of sucks that the companies can get away with calling it an "HD" TV antenna. I guess there's some loophole in there somewhere that protects them.
Thanks 1st I heard of this new ATSC 3.0 standard. Makes since due to I never could see 4k being broadcast with the stations we have now. To get 4k we had to change the HDMI and DVI standards. It seems natural for the tuner standard to have to change for the extra bandwidth 4k works off of. All of the stations do not even broadcast in 1080p or i. Most are some mixture of 1080 720 480. To which I really do not care about 4k tv due to I watch most all 480p content. However, I would like to get clear OTA channels with out having to do a lot to get them like finding that right spot to put your antenna into and even not having to do some crazy multi antenna set up. I all ready have a homerun ATSC 1.0 box set up putting another beside it or replacing it would be as easy as rescanning channels. I do not see the stations building new broadcasting towers just for this change. Thanks for the eye opener video. Keep it up. Thanks again.
As of this post, it looks like Baltimore has a rock solid lineup of ATSC 3.0 compliant networks already, basically all of the big network mainstays except for CBS, hopefully they will go live soon too since the Ravens play on CBS a lot. I'm excited to see what DC will offer soon too given that I grew up closer to there, and prefer their news channels. It's good to be a Maryland antenna user!
I don’t think that 4K will be noticeable on smaller TVs like 43 inches or smaller. I think it’s mostly for the benefit of oversized TVs like 60 inches and up. However, better reception and more channels will benefit all TVs regardless of screen size.
It depends. If someone in a rural area has problems with multipath from trees then reception should improve. If the issue is someone living too far away or in a very mountainous area then no. The new standard can't overcome obstruction or the curvature of the earth.
@@AntennaMan Another added bonus to ATSC 3.0 over previous generations is the ability to have boosters or repeaters on the same frequency (single-frequency network). In the past, there have been translator stations that rebroadcast television stations in communities on a different frequency, because if one happened to be where both signals were both detected, they could cause interference and cancel each other out. Due to the nature of this signal type, they can broadcast on the same frequency and likely higher power than the older translator stations. This will improve the coverage of stations in rural areas.
ATSC 3.0 is great it would be a big help since I have so many trees around and I heard it is great in moving environments like cars and buses. But it's not coming to the Philadelphia region for a little while so sadly I'm stuck with 1.0. But that's okay because I have a bunch of those old WinTV tuners in a PC that I use as a multimedia server that wont support 3.0 until I can get tuners that support it which who knows when that will be... Edit: honestly I wish we can just all use DVB-T(2) for TV and DAB for radio instead of these weird standards.
@@jeffkardosjr.3825 DAB isn't perfect. DAB+ has sound quality better than DAB and Hybrid Digital and with DVB-T2 Lite on the horizon which is expected to replace DAB+ for Radio then sound quality definitely won't be an issue since it will be on par with digital TV.
Truth and Quality , Practical and Useful Information. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Some very small differences , ATSC 3.0 is the same as DVB-T (2) and variations of DVB. And you are correct , DAB for radio is much better.
I have been watching your channel for tips on antennas and hardware. My DIY antenna picks up most channels from Orlando and Tampa, FL. I have recently lost the video portion of Ch. 18.2. I contacted the station and they told me this was due to an "upgrade" of the signal. They added a sub channel (2.3) but my older TV's would not get the video on 18,2. I had purchased the TV tuner box you recommended and I do receive the video from 18.2 on that device. Do you have any updated recommendations on external tuner devices?
Do the signals travel farther with the new Nextgen signal? Example: If you are 50 mi away from Philadelphia, would you get better reception with the new signal versus the existing signal from the same transmitter?
I see a lot of states at that NextGenTV website that aren't listed as having 3.0 or even in the future. Does this mean this isn't a nationwide standard and only some places will be switching?
Columbus Ohio went ATSC3 live. On Jan 7th. After a rescan, some stations were moved around. found that the ATSC1 signals were stronger an I could get more channels that I couldn’t before.
More correctly, some stations when they went ATSC3 moved to new broadcast towers an frequencies. Which required the rescan. Either the old ATSC1 signals moved towers, or are broadcasting at higher power levels or both. As my reception has improved. An I can now reliably pick up my lone VHF channel now.
So,..I purchased the HD Homerun 4K to view local Detroit channels in 4K. Well,..they are not 4K although the channels are listed as HEVC signals. This is what was posted in the forum: "No one is transmitting 4K over the air right now outside of a LPTV station in Idaho that has Insight UHD as part of an encrypted subscription OTA service that has a bunch of other cable channels. There's no seperate ATSC 3.0 allocation for each station like there was during the 2009 transition, so groups of stations have to come together and pick an existing signal to share for at least 5 years, which doesn't leave enough bandwidth for 4K. Plus the major network feeds still originate as either 1080i or 720p, so what's available is just HEVC/AC-4 versions of the primary channels at mostly the same resolution, with a few stations deinterlacing the 1080i network source to provide 1080p. The main improvement for now is that the modulation used by ATSC 3.0 is better at handling multipath issues, and in some PLP configurations can be decoded under unstable reception conditions like while you are in motion." What was that,...No one is transmitting 4k? expect BF Idaho? The box is going back.
I contacted the Next Gen TV website and told them that all the Virginia cities on their map can be condensed into one area. Most locals call it Hampton Roads anyway (This is from a 20 year native of that area). There are no other Virginia cities with ATSC 3.0 Currently or coming soon.
One of the things I look forward to with the new ATSC 3.0 or NextGen TV standard is I can at last justify purchasing one of those junk antennas which Tyler is telling people not to buy but they buy anyway.
I like what Frank Loyd Wright said. Ive been cursed all my life with people that trust me. A funny twist. And many years ago. A guy said , at one time every ones last name was Gatlin. But some of fell out of grace. I said how's that?? He said what's your last name now??
So I have Sling TV and bought their "AirTV" antenna tuner to view my antenna received channels via the Sling TV app. It works pretty well to be honest and it's nice that my antenna channels are integrated in with my sling subscription. That said, is their tuner ATSC 3.0 compatible or will it stop working once 1.0 is turned off? I'm debating getting an HDHomeRun tuner and using that instead. BTW, I am in an area that does have 3.0 broadcast, although only 5 channels, two of which are Spanish speaking, lol.
I live in Raleigh area and bought a hdhomerun 4k tuner, I have a Clearstream 2Max installed on my roof. Love it! Can you explain plp and other benefits.
So basically we can keep the old TV and just get a 3.0 Tuner, or skip the tuner and get an up graded TV with ATSC 3.0 built in tuner. Our area won't be up and running till later in Fall. I also just got the 2Max. I plan to remove the dish and repurose the J pole.

So without the new tuner over the air converter boxes won't work with the new NexGen.TV, ATSC 3.0? Are you saying the change we had to make years ago will not work once the new one gets online
There aren't any channels listed on that site for my "market" Sadly, it likely wouldn't matter in the slightest anyway if there were. The backstory: I am from an area with 2 ABC affiliates, back in the analog days one of them, channel 3, was consistently the strongest signal strength channel, to the point that if you didn't switch RF modulators to channel 4 (and most people didn't bother) there would be visible ghosting or even a rolling double image (which many people had) from it bleeding in. This one only ever had mono audio. The other, channel 5, had stereo audio but was consistently the weakest. Whenever a movie was being shown I just kept my fingers crossed that 5 would be working and not fade out so that I had the better audio. Along comes digital and now all of them have improper aspect ratios and/or aspect ratio flags, sound issues, Etc. The NBC affiliate always broadcasts 5.1 and routes mono and stereo audio to the front left and right channels instead of just sending 2.0 audio or using Dolby Pro Logic during those times. This makes it impossible for viewers like me to use Dolby Pro logic because the AVR thinks that it is already discrete 5.1. It's maddening. In short my local stations have been messed up for as long as I can remember. Here's hoping that they can get it right this time around.
I like your Videos, keep us updated. When will Broadcasters Upgrade to 4k Ultra HD ? I currently find it annoying to have to deal with having 2 TV's , 1080p and a 4K Ultra HDTV. It would have been nice to at least have 1 Broadcaster in Ultra HD when the TV's were released.

In an effort to get KREN Channel 27 uhf in Reno, Nevada I combined two antennas by replacing the vhf rods with longer ones from a donor antenna and cut the uhf section from the donor antenna and attached it to the uhf end of the “FrankenAntenna.” I then aimed the “FrankenAntenna” at 169 degrees. I didn’t get KREN Channel 27, but signal db was substantially increased on all other channels. Is there a way to discover if KREN is transmitting?
KREN is licensed for 1MW ERP which makes it a full power station. RF channel 26/ virtual ch27. It’s Univision so it’s likely that they are transmitting. Just call the station to confirm and get the coordinates of their transmitting site so you can verify you are pointing your antenna in the right direction. Their number is 775 333-1017
You should do a video on stations actually taking advantage of 3.0 (like real 4K, 5.1 audio, etc.). Besides better reception it feels kinda meaningless.
Since Tyler mentioned about Low Power analog TV stations If you're still nostalgic about analog TV do what I tell you. Buy a HDMI to RCA converter and an RCA to RF converter (make sure the RF converter has VHF/UHF output frequency), and use your old CRT TV. My Mate VINCE has some videos on how to broadcast analog TV over the air. Of course it's more like a low power wireless CCTV.
Here are some of his videos: 1. ua-cam.com/video/__AACj_EVpA/v-deo.html 2. ua-cam.com/video/SAS19C1otCQ/v-deo.html 3. ua-cam.com/video/F9SGv11f1dA/v-deo.html
It is interesting that you show the Sony TVs. If you look up that model just here on UA-cam you’ll see the amount of reviews and in depth coverage for that model. The 900H is considered one of the bang for your buck TVs currently on the market that support some of the enhanced features of the newest consoles. It has a ATSC 3.0 tuner built in (after update). Interestingly enough, many people already have the tuner in their TVs now and may not even know it.
Tyler mentioned in another video that Sony TVs is one of the brands that get the fewest channels. It would be nice if I could just get a firmware update and get an ATSC 3.0 tuner without buying a new TV, but that doesn't seem to be the case. I'll probably just get a converter box, if ATSC 3.0 is ever available in my area (it seems unlikely).
Hi. I bought the 4K HD home run. It picks up more channels and does a better job than the previous model (not that the previous model was bad). But I have not figured out how to get the astc 3 channels. I live in the Pittsburgh area. Could you do a video on this? I also bought the Televes vhf/uhf antenna which is very well made and improves reception. I use it indoors. Thanks for all you videos!
Flexible Bit Rates and Coverage Areas? This would be a great video .... however technical .... but good. The graphic with the colored concentric circles and the bit rates for each look intriguing.
Can you spend a bit of time expanding on how ASTC 3.0 and being connected to wifi work with each other. While many future viewers will only be able to use ATSC 3.0 in a "stand alone" environment, many of us have high speed wifi internet and we would like to know what additional capabilities and features that will bring to the table. I noticed too that "smart TV's" will be taking advantage of this as well. Thanks for all you are doing to keep us informed.
Mainly UA-cam-style targeted ads. Subchannels will move exclusively to Internet delivery, partly to entice viewers to hook up their Internet connections to tuners, and partly to open up the RF bandwidth to cell carriers for extra 5G capacity. Money in broadcasters' pockets coming and going.

How about a mobile TV over the air video. For example, let’s say someone has a conversion van, with a TV installed. Due to multi path, (and I assume Doppler effect plays in as well), reception above 5mph is difficult to impossible. How will this be improved in ATSC 3.0?
OFDM modulation which is what cell phones use. Check out this video of mine. You'll see me demonstrate ATSC 3.0 in a moving car. ua-cam.com/video/EewIWWddPtI/v-deo.html
I've contacted some of the TV stations in the Kansas City, MO & KS area & have heard that KSHB-TV & KMCI-TV, both owned by Scripps, are supposed to launch ATSC 3.0 in late Summer 2021.
Detroit's WXYZ/WMYD combo (also Scripps) has launched ATSC 3.0. They're using the WMYD transmitter to broadcast all of the major network stations, while the WXYZ transmitter broadcasts WXYZ and WMYD.
You can't fix the Tivo tuners. Once ATSC 3.0 replaces the current TV standard (5-10 years) you will need a new Tivo if Tivo even decides to make a new tuner. Rumor has it they're done with DVRs.
Yeah I bought one of those flat "HD antennas", it works fine. But paid $30 for, so I bought a pair of VHF / UHF rabbit ears for $9! I'm going to see if that gives me the same stations & if it does I'm going to return the $30 one!! 💪💯
After the latest HDHomerun Quatro 4K firmware upgrade, I'm still experiencing audio issues from the stations active in the Pittsburgh market. So, it's not ready for prime time yet. It's a gorgeous picture, though!! ~Frank
It uses the AC4 audio format so that's not supported by most older, or new gear yet. It will be a combination of Silicon Dust and various devices adding support for it. My Windows 10 box plays it fine, 7 doesn't, my Shield plays everything as far as I remember, my various Roku boxes do not yet. They finally had to let you pick either 1.0 or 3.0 channels so if you don't have anything that play the 4k channels you will be able to play the 1.0 channels fine. So far I don't think Portland OR is actually broadcasting 4k video yet, just up to 1080p. Might be a while before they do.
My Android phone and Samsung TabA still don't have video on the HD HomeRun app either, but get audio now on the 3.0 channels. I keep checking for updates and they keep releasing them but no luck so far on those two either. Unfortunately the AC4 codec is licensed so if your software or hardware didn't want to pay for it you won't get it. Apparently Shield did and win 10 did and as it gets popular more will add it but hard to find a standalone no cost download for it.
I get multipath interference, from cars, on my weaker stations. I will probably get a new TV, in about 2 years, and i will make sure it has an ATSC 3.0 tuner in it.
Great information. I have used your tips for reception at my property in the middle of Texas and went from three to over 60 stations.
We just had 10 stations launch in 3.0 in Houston. My favorite thing so far is the rock solid signal.
Great job! Im happy you are out there giving me a heads up on what’s happening! I appreciate it!

Tyler, as usual making it easy for me (non geek) to understand and not stress out. I may like this new ATSC 3.0 due to tree blockage. Thanks.
My altitude is around 380 feet. Only locals trees are an issue.
And BTW, no glitches if you move ISDB-T receiver on other direction aside from that, some of locations have building blockage
I suppose if he didn't make it easy, you'd be like my sister-in-law when my brother and I talk about computer programming.
Can't wait for the Clear TV ATSC 3.0 infomercials with the exicted, wide eyed, smiling guy selling more junk to the rubes.
UH that IS what they are, that is why they are fraudulent. It is IMPOSSIBLE to get 4K without ATSC 3.0. The Clear TV 4K IS ATSC 3.0, dummy.
It took some tweeking but I figured it out. If you see some of my older videos with the brick wall you'll hear the difference.

My TV is well over a decade old and works fine. I didn't see a reason to buy a new one, regardless of whether I saw this video or not. Buying a new TV when there are no ATSC 3.0 stations in my area seems a bit like buying deep-sea-diving gear when there are no deep seas around here.
Phoenix sure has many already. I get over 95 over the air stations now using a Channel Master outdoor antenna. Thanks for the update.
Thanks for watching the video. Phoenix was one of the first areas to launch NextGen TV
I get no OTA stations where I currently live, so I'm watching this purely out of curiosity for OTA TV standards

ATSC 3.0 is all about spying on you. It is not a true broadcast media.

Yes, there are some TVs now that have the right tuner built in but they're all high end models. The same happened in the 90s with ATSC 1.0.

Hi Tyler
I am concerned about the new requirements forcing me to give up my TiVo DVR with Lifetime service.
I have an 8 bowtie UHF array with boost amplifier on my roof for several years now. Still works for my local digital stations.
In some areas sub channels are in HD,metv, grit, laff etc. with new standard.
Sweet, my area and surrounding markets are getting it throughout this year.
Will the FCC issue coupons like they did when you had to first buy converter boxes years back?
No. They issued coupons because last time it was mandated broadcasters transitioned to ATSC 1.0. This is a voluntary transition. We're still a good 5-10 years before this thing really takes off anyway. That's plenty of time for someone to save $50 for a converter box.
1:29 god the shape of that tv the way its drawn there is giving me QUBO flashbacks
We had a few stations in Kansas City launch 3.0 this week. The launch made one channel go blank but a channel rescan brought it back on what I assume is a 1.0 signal.
I subbed, didn't knew that Quatro had a 4k version. I can now plan on future upgrades on my network. Awesome.
Might consider getting one of these new HD Homeruns when Plex fixes the audio issues they are having with ATSC 3.0.

I wonder if any companies are going to make a standalone tuner that can hook up to the tv directly and have a dvr in it
They will at some point. We're still in the early stages of this standard taking off.
@@AntennaMan Very true I’m just hoping that when they do they’ll have it at a decent price point
I have and will continue to have a VCR with digital TV. How else would I watch my old tapes? Convert them into fragile DVDs? I don't think so!
Do you think that this new standard will in any way help people in rural areas to access tv signals?
DAB radio has terrible audio quality and pointless.
Yes, 1.0 is terrible if you have a lot of trees around.

Have you seen the T-mobile T-Vision Packages
I have been watching your channel for tips on antennas and hardware. My DIY antenna picks up most channels from Orlando and Tampa, FL. I have recently lost the video portion of Ch. 18.2. I contacted the station and they told me this was due to an "upgrade" of the signal. They added a sub channel (2.3) but my older TV's would not get the video on 18,2. I had purchased the TV tuner box you recommended and I do receive the video from 18.2 on that device. Do you have any updated recommendations on external tuner devices?
How about car radios and ATSC 3.0 converter box for vehciles.?
Will you do reviews of the new receivers needed to decode the new signals?
Do the signals travel farther with the new Nextgen signal?
Example: If you are 50 mi away from Philadelphia, would you get better reception with the new signal versus the existing signal from the same transmitter?
EXACTLY! ITS THE TUNERS! thats a thing is 'rabbit ears' still wpork, you just have to connect them to a digital tuner
I've seen that happen in some areas. The lighthouse atsc 1.0 signals end up going on a stronger stick reaching areas they never did before
Need to understand the set up scenario and the advantages of this new tech.
So the only thing I would have to change in my setup is the tuner, not the preamp or any other equipment?
Correct!
So,..I purchased the HD Homerun 4K to view local Detroit channels in 4K. Well,..they are not 4K although the channels are listed as HEVC signals. This is what was posted in the forum:
"No one is transmitting 4K over the air right now outside of a LPTV station in Idaho that has Insight UHD as part of an encrypted subscription OTA service that has a bunch of other cable channels.
The main improvement for now is that the modulation used by ATSC 3.0 is better at handling multipath issues, and in some PLP configurations can be decoded under unstable reception conditions like while you are in motion."
What was that,...No one is transmitting 4k? expect BF Idaho?
The box is going back.
Yeah we're a long way from 4K. Too many people think this whole thing is happening overnight. It's not.
Magnificent Presentation !!! Thank You Kindly. Take Care and Very Best Regards.
I contacted the Next Gen TV website and told them that all the Virginia cities on their map can be condensed into one area. Most locals call it Hampton Roads anyway (This is from a 20 year native of that area). There are no other Virginia cities with ATSC 3.0 Currently or coming soon.
my market is not 3.0 yet ; so if i was to buy a 3.0 bow will i still get my regular channels yet
One of the things I look forward to with the new ATSC 3.0 or NextGen TV standard is I can at last justify purchasing one of those junk antennas which Tyler is telling people not to buy but they buy anyway.

I like what Frank Loyd Wright said.

Thank so very much for the info. I do live in NYC which has a lot natural and unnatural deflection. Multi signal interference as well.
NYC is the worst for multipath.
I live in Raleigh area and bought a hdhomerun 4k tuner, I have a Clearstream 2Max installed on my roof. Love it! Can you explain plp and other benefits.
I live in the RDU area as well.......I hope to get a 3.0 tuner soon. WRDC and WARZ-CD already launched them. You watching those stations?
@@friesareyummy live near mcgees crossroad, get Wral, wtvd, wncn, wlfl,, wrdc, warz, wraz in atsc 3
I'm still using an ancient SDTV, so if it keeps going, I can wait to buy a new set until built-in ATSC 3.0 tuners become more widespread.

Tablo likely will have a 3.0 tuner at some point when demand grows. We're still in the early stages. It's like asking a VCR company in 1999 if they can make one for the digital standard that hasn't fully taken off yet
So rural areas would get more channels? In central Kansas 16 channels with outdoor antenna.
It depends on what the broadcasters do down the road.
So without the new tuner over the air converter boxes won't work with the new NexGen.TV, ATSC 3.0? Are you saying the change we had to make years ago will not work once the new one gets online
Correct
There aren't any channels listed on that site for my "market"
Sadly, it likely wouldn't matter in the slightest anyway if there were.
It would have been nice to at least have 1 Broadcaster in Ultra HD when the TV's were released.

why do i get the primary channel and not the two other channels the station puts out?
No one's really doing 4K yet. We're a few years away from that.
What is fake 4K???
@@AntennaMan ...but Clear TV says you can get it with their antenna and the FTC lets them make that claim.

I guess my two old Zinwells from 2009 will be retired in a few years. They had a good run!
Just great yet another box to connect to my system that needs an outlet for power.
This one will spy on you too. I am surprised no one is talking about how ATSC 3.0 is a two way media and will spy on you.
@@ghenulo I think it’s a hardware and software compatibility thing, so an update couldn’t be done
I can't find a box to translate HDTV antenna coax / ATSC 3.0 in to my TV, when will they come out?

Here's the big difference: ATSC (1.0) is mandated for OTA U.S. broadcasters, but ATSC 3.0 is not. It remains to be seen whether it gets adopted by broadcasters.
Very true. This is something I'm trying to preach. Too many people think this is like the digital transition of 2009.

What’s sad my DMA of Nashville TN is one of the full 3.0 markets. But the tuners are so damn expensive.
That's because we are still in the very early stages of this launch. Tuners will be more affordable as time goes on.
@@AntennaMan I’ve bought a Silicon Dust 3.0 tuner to see if my fringe Nashville DMA can get channels I can’t even pick up right now because of the new lower bit rate transmission option. Time will tell.

It was all i could do to afford the upgrade to flat HDTVs. Now I'm going to to do it all over again in a few years? I may just say piss on it and watch my DVDs.
Nope, anyone saying otherwise is full of $#!+ and has not studied the regulations.
How about a mobile TV over the air video. For example, let’s say someone has a conversion van, with a TV installed. Due to multi path, (and I assume Doppler effect plays in as well), reception above 5mph is difficult to impossible. How will this be improved in ATSC 3.0?

When will they broadcast in 4k. Or are they.
Good question.
Hi Tyler
I am curious you say that we need to buy a new tuner for our TV, are use a TiVo bolt with four tuners. How do I go about fixing my issue?
~Frank
Hey Frank! Yes no doubt there are some bugs that need to be worked out both on the broadcasting and consumer side
@@69Dartman do you know if audio works on VCL on windows 10? That's what I'll be using.
@@AntennaMan I can check if there's a way to do it.
I get multipath interference, from cars, on my weaker stations. I will probably get a new TV, in about 2 years, and i will make sure it has an ATSC 3.0 tuner in it.
Not me! I am not letting spy on what I am watching! Fuck ATSC 3.0
Excellent info! 6:30 - Multipath interference - any in-line filters to help minimize?
I heard an attenuator can sometimes help with multipath but besides that it's hard to get rid of.
