This makes me really appreciate my 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD.
187,000 miles on it.
With the prices of new trucks, I decided to put a few grand into my truck.
Never screw with your Daily Driver. Leave 'em stock and they live a long time without major malfunctions.
yup while i can drop a turbo 5.0 small block in my B4000 i rather not tear up parts that were only made to handle 160 hp so its left in its anemic state of 160hp of ohv pushrod goodness
some do not have common sense like u, want to feel powerful.
I put a stage 1 tsp cam in mine at 215,000 it’s a 2002 suburban 5.3 still looked new inside
That cam and lifter set that was put In that motor helped it the stock afm system sucks. That motors demise was probably no oil changes and a lead foot
The LS motors are way way way better then these junk ass LTs!!!!!!
Another great video, Ray. YES, I would love to see the autopsy of this engine! Blessings to you and your family!
I was looking forward to the oil pan coming off to see the metal inside. But I'll take the engine autopsy over the oil pan any day. Thank you Ray
that streak of glitter is all you needed to see to know the bearings are toast. thing basically needs a rebuild
So many folks spend the money on lift kits and fancy rims instead of oil changes and PMs. Thanks for making this Ray- and just realized, I've been following your videos since "way back" when you worked at the dealer... you guys are the best! Wish I lived nearer to you as I'd love to be a customer too.
I totally agree. You might not have had this problem at all if the oil was changed.
Dude that engine is clean so it was well maintained. It's just GM and there crap quality anymore.
Spend a fortune on a vehicle and then spend a fortune on making it look good and to hell with changing the oil or pm. Smh
I don't know why Ray refers to his old place of employment as a "dealership"? That place was an independant repair shop. A dealership sells cars and trucks. Unless they did sales too, but I don't think they did. It sure looked like a Midas, or a Valvoline, or some kind of independant repair shop...certainly not a dealership.
@@scott.koopmannhe was at a dealership prior to the independent shop he worked at prior to his opening up his own shop.
One day, someone noticed Ray over there with his head stuffed under the hood of a car, talking to himself. Constantly yammering away about everything he was doing….I mean *EVERYTHING.*
So he says, “Hey Ray….you ought to do a UA-cam channel!”
And so here we are, riding along on Ray’s shoulder, for better or worse.
Only a true gear head can love this channel.
And I do.
Yep, appreciate the effort these men put into it. Raymond, Eric O, ETCG etc

Me too. I won't ever need ignition coils or manifolds again as i've switched everyone in my company and family to electric, but i love watching him repairing US fossils.
I had the Exact same thought!!! LMAO
I would never click off one of your videos not matter what you are working on look forward to them every day 😊
Same. My morning/day is incomplete without a video from Ray!
something i notice about you, you don’t criticize your customers. you don’t call them names or talk about their vehicle….. in a day and times like we are living, you can tell who was raised right……. i guess that’s why i always look forward to your videos!👍🏿
I’ve noticed that he tends to treat every car about the same. There are some UA-camrs on here that prefer one brand, and badmouth others. He’s just like here’s the car, here’s the content, here’s the issue. We’ll fix it and have fun doing so.
Yeah it’s cause if he talks trash he won’t have no customers hello
I really love that Ray doesn't. There WAS a guy that worked in an Audi stealership that constantly bashed customers, their cars, EVERYTHING. He was nasty and obnoxious. AND he got fired when the dealership found his channel. I never want anyone to lose their job, but that guy was over the top, and deserved firing. I have 2 VAG cars. Once in a whileI need a dealership. I'm glad I never ran into that guy, because with his attitude, I'd end up in jail.
Ouch, that sucks on a 5 year old truck! Thanks for sharing Ray!
Man these intakes are deep, when you can hear Ray and his echo in the video... Pretty crazy deep !
🤣🤣🤣
Now I know why I love Ray’s videos. watching a few other made me realize it. Ray’s videos are just positive happy and without any annoying whining. Keep it up Ray and always be nice to the wife unit.
Yes, interested in the autopsy and what really failed. And the rebuild/replacement engine too of course.
I really like my 2018 Silverado with the 5.3L - sure hope it lasts longer than this one. Regular oil changes and leaving it bone stock will help.
Add that catch can like this one had! It can only help prolong the poor valve abuse.
My 2018 is stock too. ..xcept for the AFM disabler in the obd port. Those collapsing lifters suck.
My Pappy said son your gonna drive me to drinkin' if you don't stop drivin' that Hot Rod Silverado
I am liking the new intro Ray! Great job keep making the awesome videos.

YES! on the autopsy video. The top end of that engine looked really clean and the truck looks very well cared for.

It’s only 5 years old lol
I was reading comments from when you first opened your own shop or shortly after. I am glad you did. Why would anyone think you would not survive. Ray i learn something every time i watch and i am always impressed with your knowledge AND patience. A rare combination, in my recent experience. Blessings
I started watching him while he was still working at the shop b4 the last one, but when the storm came & he said he decided to go out on his own, I knew he was going to be way better off, making his self more $ & being able to sleep at night bc he knew he did the best he could for the customer, & at big shops, they care more about billing by the book, and I know he didn't like the fact that they overcharged customers like they did, but when you do right by Ppl, you'd be surprised at how stuff falls into place! I would trust Ray to work on any of my cars & wouldn't question whatever he told me, but I would give him a few pointers on suburu, bc they are a dif type of engine, and the metal is softer than most & they are ticky and tricky to deal with but, once you get them figured out, they are rather simple to repair! But I know this went way off topic, but I agree with you on this, and he will continue to grow, bc he's damn good!
Ray need to open his own shop and I learned alot from watching his video and would like to see what the bottom end looks like
The dealership video with the AFM lifter failure was a brand new video when I started watching the channel, that video was how I found the channel!
A stethoscope is very helpful in locating bearing noise, knocking noise, scraping noise etc. in a noisy environment. This helps in isolating noises that are transferred thru equipment components and allows you to go directly to the affected area of concern.
Yes we would love to see an autopsy done ... Would like to see how well this engine performed before going down the rabbit hole ... Love these Videos and Wife Unit channel !
If you do anymore work with it you should send the engine to Eric at I Do Cars for the teardown.
Ray, for locating noises in an engine, nothing works better than a "listening stick". Basically, hold a broomstick against your ear (so it points forward) and touch the end to the engine (with engine running)... the sound will be conducted by the stick to your ear, and you can follow the sound to the source. Used to use it to find lifter ticks and tapping tappets back in the 70's
I prefer the kinda-stethoscope devices with the two earpieces so you can block out some of the background noise. They have a solid probe instead of a bell, so you can be more precise.
Morning Ray. Interesting to see the mess that can be created by upgrading stock engines. This is a very good video.
It CAN be done but it has to be done in order and you absolutely CANNOT go overboard. Especially on computer controlled engines. Without a proper tune you get detonation or "noise" that tells the computer. Which makes changes that exacerbates the problem.
we the people NEED to see the autopsy.
I'd say YES to a strip down vid to find out what failed in the motor as well. Also like previous commenter I've been watching your vids since the dealership days and about 12 months or so of those. Was concerned when you branched out on your own. But you have a great reputation and "Tell it like it is" and don't "Upsell" things that are not needed. If you were in Australia, I'd definitely be your customer. Keep up the exceptional work.
He doesn't rebuild engines, or sell parts off of bad ones. No reason. He'll buy a replacement, install it.
@@russellstyles5381 I know, but a tear down to investigate what failed would be informative.
@@russellstyles5381 I know he doesn't rebuild engines. But doing an autopsy on one to find out what actually failed would be informative and with his commentary all the more informative too..
I really like watching your videos, I start my day with your work. I can't do my own work anymore, do to my handicap, but still like watching someone who can.
Wow! As a septuagenarian, I too suffer from my afflictions and follow the same daily regiment as you do,,,
I’m going to say this truck has been redlined on more than one occasion.
I was thinking the same thing.
Exactly. Comes hand in hand with the modifications I guess.
Redlining now and then isn't bad if the oil is warm
There’s a reason there’s a redline on cars and not boats
If it was only squatted
Without an thorough autopsy, I'd say it's completely impossible to know what was the cause of such failure. So yes, an update video is going to be very interesting and informative of what not to do to cause said damage. Have yourself a great day, Ray and family.
Sometimes shit just happens. But it helps to know what might have made a failure more or less likely to happen. But never forget that sometimes shit happens and there were nothing you could have done to prevent it other than having every part x-rayed looking for imperfections in the material.
At first, I thought it could have been something like no oil ( or at least not enough oil) in the engine. Some parts heating up too much and break. But then Ray checked, and there was plenty of it, although not in a very good condition. I'd say Ray is going to have his hands full with this one. It's sad that manufacturers now only think about themselves instead of the consumer. It's hard to get a car that lasts for twenty or thirty years without any problems, even if you act as soon as a problem starts developing.
Was it an active fuel management engine? I know I'm avoiding gm products due to the horror stories they produce
@@JMilly84 At this moment in time, your guess is as good as anyone else's. However, I don't think that was the reason.
@@JMilly84bottom end has nothing you do with AFM those are top in components
I never click away from your videos. You keep me captivated by talking through the less interesting physical parts 😊
Rainman Ray's Repairs.. YES.. I would like to see what happened to this engine.
A follow up autopsy would be greatly appreciated… considering the low mileage on this truck.
My '07 Silverado went 234,000mies before any engine work was needed, and that was a stuck DoD lifter that I was able "release". I have disabled the DoD (the cheap way) and while it is no longer a daily driver (it wasn't when the lifter went bad), it still does general chore duty without a problem.
You deserve yourself a nice brand new truck. Just like that one you're putting the bank stuff on
Interesting 🤔
I don't think he wants the new stuff. Could be wrong.
He mentioned in a previous video he doesn't want to get rid of his truck because it is Pre DEF.
the emissions stuff chokes down and makes moden diesels so unreliable dodges look like toyotas at that point
and to fix it costs over 10k
Banks and BG are his bonus sponsors incomes.
Maybe a 2023 Ford f150 Lighting😳
You can’t covet something you have, only things you want but don’t have. You value it, cherish it, like it, appreciate it, hold in high regard, esteem it, and just plain give it a big thumbs up. It gets brownie points, cookie points, a fist bump, and a shout out.
Words Ray, 😊 hope that makes you grin.
If you really want to demonstrate metal in oil grab a magnet and touch it to the oil. Super cool to watch
It was probably aluminum sparkles from crank or cam bearings. Ferrous (iron, steel) would have come out in chunks.
@@Thestargazer56 maybe. But you'd still see which particles were steel and which were aluminum. The next time you change your oil try it. You just might be surprised
I've been watching Ray for over a year now. Still not disappointed with any of his videos.. I love to see the "carnage" of the motors that are blown. Reminds me of my younger years rebuilding my own engines and on occasion, launching a bearing or a rod or a camshaft. Keep the stuff coming Ray!
Love these videos always use the knowledge from these to work on my own vehicle or others. And now i started to say gravity since ive watched so much
Put a o-ring in the center of that wobbly socket and it does let it flop around so much but you still get all the wobble you need
8th! HERE WE ARE ON A FINE TUESDAY MORNING RAY AND THE WIFE UNIT! But don’t EVER forget about the three new employees! Roger in Pierre South Dakota
Troy is so lucky to have a good guy to work for. I spent thousands in school as many of us do and learned it’s a wast of money. Learned much more in the real world. Could have saved that money just starting in a good shop. Those fancy patches and certificates were nice I guess.
136,104 miles of hard work will do it. Look forward to an autopsy on this beast, but I hope the owner goes for a new long block. Keep 'em coming Ray. You are the best.
Judging by the wheels this thing isn't doing any hard work
I disagree....these engines should get close to 200k before needing overhaul or replacing if the truck has been taken care of but seeing it's a Chevy those engines area known for letting loose early!!
Loved the new intro!!
Another outstanding video Ray your the man keep up the good work Ray but the most important thing is to have your self a great day Ray
I've been here every video since you left the dealership, thought I selected an SMA video and hung around for a min and liked it so still here, now by far my favorite creator
Thumbs up on the intro keep it in
Yes we want pt 2 to this video please
Was the stem of the 3rd valve you looked at bent or was that just the camera angle? It looked different than the first 2 to me though.
Thought the same
Yes, Please do an "I Do Cars" video. Would love to see a complete tear down.
You need some red solo cups to spin those filters off . Catches all oil .
Good idea!!!
@@ChuckyBeaver I've been using them for years. Break filter loose then spin off with cup . No mess

Killer intro!
Cool, fun, and professional too; good one!
Yes we would love to see an autopsy done.
I know you said that it had oil pressure but , that valve train sure looked pretty dry considering it was just running
When you got that much metal....oil galleys probably caked and packed inside pushrods.
I like the "Good day, welcome back, I am glad you are here" It reminds me of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood show when I was just a little guy.
Autopsy yes
sad for the owner, nice truck , hope to see more vid on this engine.
I wonder how long the cam has been in there. I'll bet this rig gets flogged regularly. I'd like to see what failed.
My 5.3 in an 02 avalanche had a similar sound. Found it was a lifter that collapsed. Ate the cam and we replaced the engine. The mileage for first engine was 140000, then at the same mileage on the second engine it happened again. No drag racing , no jack rabbit starts just a lot of city driving. Love the engine just had issues. We sold the truck.
Love the videos Ray can't wait to see the next one ❤❤😊😊
Always need to see the autopsy.
4:50, I think I see the problem. It says SAE 0W-20W on the oil filler cap. :|
Might as well use water.
Yeah.....putting a different weight oil in it. That’ll help.
I'm so glad I got the 4.3L v6... the extra space and less parts. Got all the power I need to drag my camper all over with just a transmission cooler to keep Temps down. Not saying I didn't do a few little minor things to make it mine.
I wouldn’t mind seeing what you find on this engine.
Just turned 44 on the 23rd! I have come to appreciate bone stock for a daily driver more each year! I’ve got a 2008 suburban that had the top end rebuilt by dealer when I bought it at 160,000. I had timing set replaced as precaution and oil pump and water pump since they had that stuff off as well as rear main seal and oil pan gasket at 170,000 since they were seaping! Runs like new!
Id rather change my oil twice as often ,then by 5k of wheels and tires.
that is why u have ur savings in ur bank, instead of Banks.
Definitely would like to see more on the silverado
That’s what happens when you put all that crap on it!
It’s a 10 mm socket (I like mine too) and it’s yours so you like it and don’t want to loose it.
Interesting job. I thought right off the top that it was a AFM failure. Not so sure now. Thanks for bringing us along. I have an 07 with AFM. 👍
I would like to see the autopsy and removal of engine. Nice to see from end to end as well. If the owner permits it.
Reeee! @2:03 -- Actually, cruise ships have bow thrusters and can turn on a dime.
Just got back from a cruise. Between the rotatable drive units(Azipods) and bow thrusters they can just spin around in their own length.
Your a very professional mechanic well done
Waiting to watch you rip that engine out and tear it down.
I'm just here to say I'm in for the autopsy, Ray.
You would think that someone who put all those aftermarket parts on car would pay more attention to oil changes. That oil looked like tar.
Just imagine how many oil changes he could of done with the money spent on aftermarket and lift kit parts. Do ya think he’ll learn from that mistake?
I've seen it be worse from some of the auto channels here where the inside is full of sludge and likely had not had the oil changed at anything less than 10,000 + miles, if ever. This one simply is thick with the glitter from either a bearing (likely, and it's from the crank being most likely).
I have a 04 5.3, and you couldn't convince me to sell it, but these new ones, you can keep it.
It is possible this vehicle has been turned up to 11 too often.
I have had a 283, 327, 305 and a 350 Chevy and not one problem with any of them. We are not making progress.
You need a phone in the shop so you can make the phone noises.... I miss the phone noises
We all miss them.
Doodleeedooo
Have to tell wife unit to secretly change the ring tone on Ray's phone to doodeli doo😂
Yes definitely need a video of tear down. Which main bearing spun from 9k rpm rev?
Gm has so many issues lately with quality control. Anything built after 2015 is junk.
Old gm was America's heartbeat... Now it's America's heart attack 😅
2010 was the end in my opinion.
It has a cam in it….and he’s having ray fix it
It ain’t a Chevy problem
And 2010 models are complained about 2
@@jakejonesy9275These engines in the 2000s where known to go 300,000+ miles trouble free if maintained. This engine looked to be maintained well for as clean as the valves are. It shouldn't have threw a bearing at 136,000 miles.
An autopsy video of any component is always going to be a great video, so yes Ray; if you do get the go ahead to do further work on this vehicle to get it running then yes, an autopsy of the engine would be much appreciated.
YES, I would love to see the autopsy of this engine!
Omg I'd love to see the engine autopsy that would be fascinating
Always a sad day to see an LS give up the ghost! Had a 99 TA with an Ls1 ran it hard. Sold it at 230,000 miles and aside from a crank seal leaking oil it was still very strong! Love the Ls platform.
"LS" this and "LS" that.....we've been seeing quite a few failures from the "bulletproof" LS that everybody blows thier load over. Still dont know what the hype is.
Yes Ray, love to see you pull the engine. I suggested to see you do that.
so much top end work before you found it was bottom end problem requiring removal of engine. still you followed a logical process. bit sad so much work needed to home in on problem. but Ray is undaunted, keeps going til problem isolated. much 😮 for you!
Beautiful truck, but as soon as you said " it's a 2 wheel drive unit" 😢what a disservice to a truck like that😂 ,love the videos Ray 🤘🤘

Love watching your content Ray. Enjoy your commentary the most, as you often teach me quite a bit without probably realising it. Would find the autopsy just as intriguing - I am always interesting to find out how things come together, and the best way to find out is when they're coming apart.
Yes we would love autopsy of motor and that would be a nice metallic color to paint a vehicle.
I like the patience you bring to the front and the way you make a bad situation into a non existent one.Very nice job indeed Damnskippy !
Hey Ray, Word up about your filter cutter. It wont last long cutting like you did. Make a few lighter cuts, not one puncture cut. It's like a tubing cutter, make all the cuts light and the cutting wheel lasts a long time. It's brittle, so if it isn't squared up it can snap.
they come i 4 ray thats your second blowing engine this week. Can't wait to see you pull it apart

Crazy to start seeing my year and model of truck start to show up on repair channels. I just hit 25k on mine, but I've been working from home since I got the truck. lol Only mod thus far is a GM Performance intake(went with this one from the dealer to keep my dealer lifetime powertrain warranty).
It does look like a bearing wearing issue thats happened over some time, like a camshaft wear, going by such small particles of maybe iron and not so much aluminum, but the noise points more to conrod bearings that may have lost oil pressure through the camshafts bearings, I don't know what system these have being mainly dealing with Chrysler myself, awesome show thanks heaps for sharing, and you remind me so much of an old school buddy of mine that grew up to be a mechanic at "Heyman Ford" 😉
Yes please. I like to see engine teardowns when there are big time issues.
Omg At the Amount of Glitter coming out of that oil pan and Oil Filter It definitely Lost a Main Bearing The nocking noise isnt loud enough to be a rod bearing and if it was a rod bearing it would get louder during a specific Stroke Up or down and Would change pitch during higher rpm Hard to tell from the video its very consistent noise no matter the Rpm like a Main Bearing 21:37 good Teardown Video Raymond @Rainman Ray's Repairs
