Hi, I did not ask for likes, comments, or subscribers in this video as that is not its purpose. Do as you will, however your help in getting this message passed on to other D&D UA-camrs would be a big help and much appreciated. Especially those with audiences that skew younger and newer to the hobby since they might have no idea about the impact Ed and Tim have had. Thank you very much. @@welovettrpgsThank you for the thoughtful video--it's amazing how these folks shaped all of our childhoods and teen years by giving us the vehicles and permission that we could tell our own tales of myth, wonder and high adventure. All we needed were dice, graph paper, pencils, a commonly understood rule set and our imaginations.
Aten, I'm a patreon of Ed's. Tim is a good guy but he's very anti-religious & that doesn't sit right with me. That still doesn't affect my respect I have for him. Ed will always have a special place in my heart tho. There's Tolkien and then Ed in my book. I'd love to have a Google meet with you some night. Just to talk about everything. If you ever want to spend an hour with me just talking, I'd consider it an honor.
Ah, two of my favorite ttrpg UA-camrs! I know it is hard to not fall into the negativity, and for good reason, but I appreciate both of you for bringing in positivity into the hobby. Thank you.
Yeah man, this is so important. We are gradually going to lose these folks as time rages on. Let's celebrate the people who are still with us even as we honor the memories of those who've passed on by continuing to play the games, go on the adventures, and enjoy the art they've given us!
Thanks for the video! Positivity is very important and my own channel with The Okay Grognard Show focuses on my lifetime of gaming, wargaming in the early 1970s and adding D&D when it was published in 1974. I transitioned to 1E AD&D as it was released and although I have played and run all editions, and countless other RPGs, I always run 1E for my main D&D campaigns. My first Gen Con was in 1975 and I have attended and DMed at all of the Gary Cons. I semi-retired about a decade ago to Lake Geneva and have helped manage Lake Geneva Games since 2016. I love to celebrate all forms of tabletop gaming and am enjoying being here in LG as so many others continue to discover RPGs and share the 50 year legacy of our hobby!
For me, you're preaching to the converted, but thank you for reverencing the progenitors of this hobby, and reminding us that none of us are here forever. I hope that artists like Jeff Dee, Erol Otus, Clyde Caldwell, Larry Elmore and Jeff Easley, along with creators such as Jeff Grubb, David 'Zeb' Cook, Steve Marsh, frank Mentzer, Tracy Hickman, Doug Niles, Rob Kuntz, and SO many others can be remembered as the frontiersmen of the hobby that we enjoy to this day. Thank you for your videos.
Brother, I’ve been a DnD giy since 1978. R.I.P. Mr. Ward. May you and you your fellow advenurerers meet again in the Great Tavern in the Sky. I won’t lie 😢 my tears are real. These gentlemen have influenced my life in so many ways. Not to mention SIMPLE MATH people! English, Latin, Mathematics, Sociology, problem solving, empathy and wrath. I pray for your peace. And your family. Amen 🙏
I already subscribed to Ed’s UA-cam channel. And I don’t even play DnD. Jet I know how much I as non-DnD-GM owe to guys like Ed Greenwood. I will go over to his channel page and leave him a massage. Thank you for this video.
Dragons foot was my touchstone to my fellow grognards well before any D&D version was being played by professional actors on UA-cam. The chance to interact with Gary, Dave, Len, and Frank, not to mention the non famous awesome content creators (real content, like dungeons, campaign worlds and everything homebrew you can think of) was priceless. Dragons foot is still there, and everything is still archived and searchable. You can play for eternity with all that exists on there for free, and the best thing is that you will be getting it straight from the legends that made TTRPG a reality. Also go to Ed’s and Tim’s channels, like he said.
Well said. Ed Greenwood's channel is a fantastic resource for deeper Realms lore. I wasn't aware of Tim Kask's channel, though. I'll have to check it out. Thanks!
Thanks. It was a member of our Discord who informed me about Tim when I asked if they thought this would be an OK topic . I'm grateful to have learned about Tim's channel as well.
thank you so much for this video sir. Not only informative but also touched my heart. you are a pillar of our hobby community. I realize im only just back into this hobby that i fell in love with back in 1980, but i am still feeling the love of the community. It is content creaters like yourself that brought me back into the fold. Thank you from my heart to yours...i see you.
I also just happened upon Ed Greenwood's channel recently. I was kind of shocked that there existed this resource where I could just get the lore from the mouth of the guy himself. We must absolutely cherish this while we have it.
I started playing at the young age of 7 in 1980 my DM was my 13 year old brother. Needless to say that D&D gave me a huge advantage in school for reading and basic math. I appreciate you sharing this with us and making this heart felt video. I agree, the negativity just pushes new players away. I personally have grown tired of the constant negativity by UA-cam creators about D&D. Rarely do they put out anything of substance and positive. I have also noticed they tend to all make the exact same videos at the same time. Even if it isn't a current event. I subscribed to both Ed and Tim's channels. I didn't know Tim had one. Thanks again.
R.I.P. Jim Ward. He was a giant in the history of the hobby. I had a very nice online relationship with him. I mentioned this recently on Tim Kask's channel, so if you saw the latest video of his, he mentioned my little snippet. I was fairly active on the old-school D&D forum, Dragonsfoot... as was Gary, Tim, Jim, Frank Mentzer, Rob Kuntz, etc... I became a bit friendly online with some of them and had a really fun time there. Out of the blue (2008-ish), Jim Ward messaged me that he wanted my address. I was a bit confused... and asked why he wanted it. He said he just wanted to send me something he thought I would like. In the end, he sent me a nice signed, hardcover copy of his latest version of Metamorphosis Alpha that was coming out at the time. I was so honored. He simply liked my dumb posts and interaction online... and saw my fondness for his work... and he wanted to give me something nice, just to be nice. I'll cherish that book forever. Thank you again, Mr. Ward... safe trip.
As a lover of the Greyhawk setting, thank you for your extraordinary efforts in recreating the "history" and evolution of the world of Greyhawk, for my part it is much appreciated!
When I first uploaded this my links were screwy. (In description they should work now). I'm bad at technology. Someone was nice enough to post correct links. Their post went into the moderation folder. I approved it with the intention of pinning it but then the comment vanished. It might be something on my end, seems there was something more going on than just me being dumb. Anyway, I didnt catch your name, and I wanted to thank you to let you know I didn't delete it. I'm sorry but I have no idea what happened to it. Thanks.
I have several interviews with James on my UA-cam channel, as well as an interview with Gary, I have interviewed many many of the pioneers of the hobby, and on June 20th 2024 I'll be interviewing Rose Estes on my channel.
Between your message here and James Holloway's Monster Man podcast tributes to Jim Ward, my attention has been turned to these creators and the treasures they shared with us. Cheers!
Excellent video topic. I'm a long time subscriber to both Ed's and Tim's channels. Tim very patiently tolerates my often wild lines of thought, and answers my questions with great aplomb. I love Ken St. Andre's work, which of course includes Tunnels & Trolls; but, my favorite was Chaosium's _Stormbringer_ system. Sadly, that brings me to two more lost legends: Greg Stafford (1948-2018) and Stephen H. Perrin (1946-2021). On the up side, while not a game designer, I love Fantasy Games Unlimited's entire catalog of games, so I would like to mention that Scott Bizar is still selling FGU games, and at very fair prices compared to the norm these days. FGU had some rocky years; but, they're one of the old-school companies that are still in business. I recently purchased the original boxed-set version of _Daredevils_ for $15 USD, plus $3 shipping...you can't beat that. Moreover, it's the easiest introduction to Bob Charrette's and Paul Hume's *Base Chance of Success* (BCS) system, which is my personal favorite system of all-time. I've heard that Paul Hume passed, but still haven't seen any confirmation. Cheers!
Thanks you for linking Tim's channel - I'll check it out, and more generally thanks for doing this. I'm already subscribed to Ed's channel, it's great. So ist your's btw. Cudos!
I've been watching Greenword's channel for some time. His Realm Speak has been so informative and the stories are just classic Greenword. I had never hear of Tim until this video so thank you for noting his contributions. It's wacky but I'm one of those fans that rarely dives so deep as to learn the history and personalities behind the content I enjoy but as the game sphere has become so interconnected and channels such as yours have illuminated the minds behind the madness that is our hobby, I've really been learning so much more than I anticipated.
Sometimes we can't see the forest because of all that trees. Thank you for reminding me to focus on positivity and kindness. I will happily follow your advise. By the way, as a fellow mustache twirler I would like to take the chance to admire your beautifully selected composition of beard length, moustache and your haircut in conjunction with your formal attire. AND, of course, I like your videos. Please keep up with your good work and hopefully live long and prosper. \\//_
Thanks! But full disclosure, it's an effort and I admire truly positive people. To some degree it is difficult being well informed about the world and to be positive. And yeah, I hit the ban hammer on anyone who drops a political buzzword in the comments. Thats not what I do here.
