  • Maxpedition has come out with something quite a bit different... a messenger bag. This video looks at the Larkspur, the smaller of the two they came out. Check it out at www.maxpedition.... Two part video because it ran over 10 minutes and I spliced it in half. Please check out Part 1 too • Maxpedition Larkspur M...

I'm surprised at how much stuff I can really carry in the Larkspur. Those two pockets in the front are such a bonus its wild. I fit lunch and books and supplies and everything all at once. It always just flaps over and its all good.

Thx EGL. It's a bear to measure stuff like that. I was able to get more than 4 1/2 depth of stuff in there though. It has awesome capacity to throw all my daily stuff in there.
Yes, I see why you left the large compartment paracord zipper pulls off. They now lay nice and flat under the rain flaps and the whole zipper is covered. Very smart.

Nice review. I was chuckling over on part one when you said that Maxpedition considers this the "small" version. This bag is not small!

Thx Andy. Thx Cybrus. I used sticky velcro but after I washed the bag it kinda came off and I didn't replace it. A viewer said he took his to a shoe repair shop and had it sewn shut on the bottom. I hope to do the same.

You had me thinking about this Ron. I know what you mean. I need to take my camera along and show some of the stuff i bring along on our hikes and how I use my daily EDC bags. Thx for the idea.

I've been in the bicycle business for 20+ years. I also am very interested in things tactical. I've been trying to come up with a bag to use on my bicycle commute that would allow for inconspicuous handgun carry. On that count, this one would work. However, as a real messenger type bag, the Larkspur misses on a few key points.
    1. You don't wear a strap around your waist while riding. The strap should instead come up diagonally and buckle to the main strap. That's the way all of the bike bag

  • @bikebrian
    @bikebrian 15 років тому

companies do it. Look up Timbuk2 or Chrome bags. A strap around your middle can feel like it's cutting you in half.
    2. A pad on the main shoulder strap. People tend to overload bags. A single strap over your shoulder can start to hurt if you're wearing the bag for hours at a time.
    3. The entire bottom of the bag should be covered in the 1000 denier ballistic nylon. Dumping off the bag with something pointed inside can cause punctures.
No mention was made about waterproofness. Is it? That's it

    actually it is 18 x 14 x 4.5
the pulls were left on .. on purpose
the hidden slot pockets can accommodate up to 1911 sized pistols.
    Glad you liked my design

One more thing, we need a 360 degree view of what the bag looks like while being worn. There is a proper and an improper way to wear a messenger bag.

Great review, the first i have seen of these bags.I love shoulder bags as i hate carrying a bergan/rucksack. I spent a month living out of a shoulder bag i made myself in the deep bush in Sweden last year and all i had was my shoulder bag and my bedroll.
Based on this review i am seriously thinking about buying this bag or the Gleneagle one so thanks alot!

The ability to organize on the whim though is pretty cool. Take stuff out, rearrange for some other activity, etc. Kind of unique.
I hear what you're saying about a medics bag. I wonder if their MultiPurpose Bag is close for that use? Thx Frazer..

I really like Maxpedition gear and I have a ton of their stuff. Nonetheless, I don't like this particular bag, since it doesn't have a bottle holder on the side, no dedicated laptop area and even though the material is rugged, it is flimsy. I was debating between the 5.11 Tactical Rush Delivery Messenger Bag, the Hazard 4 M.O.D Messenger Bag and the Maxpedition Larkspur Messenger Bag, but I ended up buying the Messenger Bag by 5.11 Tactical.

Yeah....befor I had my editing program I use to do eveything in one take and forget lots of stuff many times. I do like to edit tho. I actually enjoy the editing process alot. I can easily loose myself in it for hours. Like my most recent
video of my climb up Mt Warning, that took me 6hrs do to.
I just took it easy and had fun.

You'd know about making vids RDP! I have gotten a bit lighter with my editing and letting it roll a bit more looser than I was. Now a one-take vid would monumental...

I haven't seen this vid a long while but I probably mentioned Moleskine. Its a notebook manufacturer and there are geeks that swear by them. Kind of cultish almost. lol Thx for the input and observation on the velcro, Kip!

Me again. Are these bags waterproof? No mention was made. Also, waterproof zippers could make the bag lighter. Just a thought. Real bicycle messenger bags use a diagonal stabilizing strap rather than a waist strap. Far more comfortable while riding. Also keeps area around belt and pockets clear. Check out bags by Timbuk2 and Chrome to see some of these features. Just in case you think I'm just some jerk, I have a Maxpedition Fat Boy that I carry almost every day. Great bag.

Roz, Once again you've enriched my life with another informative presentation. That's a really nice pack. Looks like there's tons of room in there! Do you think it could hold more than three human heads without looking lumpy?
    Just curious.

Hi, your bag is pretty nice but not all of the way there. I work in the bike business and have handled hundreds, if not thousands of messenger bags, heard the complaints, seen the failures. For starters, use the ballistic nylon to cover the entire bottom on the outside. People just dump off heavy bags without looking. The heavy nylon would protect from punctures. Put a thick pad on the shoulder strap. carrying a heavy bag all day cuts into your shoulder. Padding helps.

It seems to me that any pouch with a velcro flap is useless if the pouch itself is affixed to the bag with velcro. 5:58 is a good example of where it takes two hands to open the flap. That's useless. Excellent review though. What are molestinas?

  • @RoscoeBa
    @RoscoeBa  15 років тому

Brian, I don't know what to tell ya. I haven't ridden a bike since I was like 13. I don't think Maxpedition is geared towards the bike rider community. As you mentioned, there are companies that satisfy those needs. Sorry my vid didn't have enough info for you. I do my best. You should design and sketch your perfect bag and sew it up like the guys at DIYTactical. Great site! TacticalTailor might make it for you too.

Thanks for the great review - it definitely helped sell me on the bag. I was wondering what you used to close that opening on the back of the bag - just stick-on velcro?

Nice review. One question I have that I can't seem to find an answer for anywhere is: What is the width of the zippered opening in the top flap? Ideally, I'd like to be able to put a laptop in that pocket so I could just open up the bag and run it through the scanner at the airport without having to remove my laptop. My laptop is 14.75" X 9.75" so it seems that it would easily fit in the pocket, but the zipper might not open wide enough to allow me to put the laptop inside the pocket.

Thx LD! You're funny! No, I def would not use this for the range. Wouldn't hold heavy gear like ammo too well. Go with the Active Shooter Bag for that. EGL (right below this comment) designed that one too.

I thought this one was going to EGL. Sorry if it sounds like I'm beating on you. The bag is pretty clearly inspired by bicycle messenger bags. They're somewhat fashionable these days. Your vid was fine except for the lack of a wear demo.
