this guy is fantastic, as I try to provide my Masters students of governance and public service ethics in Africa, the background that led to the amoral atmosphere of African politics, rooted in colonial administrative ideology (as per Peter Ekeh, 1975) and the rise of a bourgeoisie fleeing to Africa to avoid conflict in Europe and seeking to accumulate wealth and power ... Just a fantastic overview of European history. Fantastically lucid summary view. A joy. No exam, just need to understand. Since I was growing up a few years after WWII in affluent USA we never learned much European history at all, except for the enlightened and daring social studies teacher here and there. I can remember him so well: Mr. Perrelli, explaining the pretensions of the Cold War political theories, going back fifty five years. THAT's teaching. Richey has it too.
In England from 1800 to 1900. 20,000 Waterwheels declined in number. Windmills declined in number. The Englishman Thomas Newcomen's 1500 Atmospheric Pumps disappeared. The Scotsman James Watt's 500 Steam Engines and their descendants increased in number to 10,000,000 !!! It was a Power Revolution! That's an increase in total Power output for the whole country of between 1400 and 1500 times!! A percentage increase of between 40,000 % and 50,000 % !! What other of all those so-called " Industrial Revolutions had that effect on the country's economy? And it was all thanks to James Watt's Invention of the world's first PRACTICAL Steam Engine, and its descendants. I was surprised myself when I looked at those numbers!
Factories, Water-Power, and big business have been around for millenia. Not very rich James Watt's invention of the world's first PRACTICAL High Pressure Steam Engine in not very rich Scotland was the one and only invention that caused the first, and most transforming Industrial Revolution. It was a Power Revolution. James Watt dumped Newcomen's Atmospheric Power and Arkwright's 2000 years old Water-Power for High Pressure Steam Power. Historically speaking it was a sudden event. In James Watt's lifetime the world had changed, because of his invention.
