I have a 4 watch winder from this company. I think you could remove the outer layer of the watch pillow to make it smaller so you don't have to mash it down with your watch like that. I have a 7.5 inch wrist and I had to glue some leather pads on the pillows to get a tight fit. If you put watches the pillows loosely, like you had the San Martin in the video, I'm able to hear the watches shifting around and it is bothersome. The motor is quiet enough that I keep it in my bedroom and my wife hasn't moved it out. I've had it for a couple of years and there is some wear in the plastic lining where the pillows go in but otherwise has really held up.
On the topic of whether it is truly useful I would say in general it is not. I do keep watches on it and tend to rotate them but have enough watches I like to wear that I'm often taking one out of the watch box and winding it up to wear. I think it is nice if you have Seikos or Orients that aren't windable. If I am planful enough to know I am going to wear one of mine the next day I throw it on so I don't have to shake it up when I go to set it. It also helps reduce the winding wear and tear on ETA 2824 movements if you throw them on before you wear them.
I have been pleased the the function and looks of the winder but don't think I will get another when this one wears out.

I don't like winders. I grew up with my father owning a full service car sales and service lot so am very mechanically inclined. I don't think any of us would go outside and turn the car on and leave it running while in the driveway. Yes like a car it is wise to use occasionally so just wear them. LOL. Great video as always. I agree there is normally no need for a watch winder, and I think the way you're using it is clever, after all you can't wear 3 watches at a time! One exception is complicated perpetual/moonphase watches that are more likely to be damaged be resetting than by the winder.

The watch winder you show there is a watch killer. A microprocessor controlled winder will simulate a wearer. Run a few rotations per hour for 10 hours then off for 8 hours. Not running endlessly. I have a fairly large rotation and believe that a controlled watch winder is less destructive than unscrewing crowns and hand winding.

This is what the winder does, it runs in short cycles for 12 hour then totally off for 12. Each cycle is something like 2 mins then 20 mins off and 2 mins etc.

I get it watch winders arent nescessary but from my perspective for a person who has one watch and wears it everyday then its no different than having 60 watches and using winders to keep them all wound. Sure youre putting some wear on the movements but thats also part of watch ownership, servicing. Comparing a watch to a car motor is a inaccurate analogy. A better comparison is a grandfather clock. You dont wind those as they run 24hrs a day being run through the pendulum. No one stops those once a month to let it "rest" they run for 20yrs until it stops and you get the same watchsmith who works on wristwatches to fix them as as well. I let my car "rest" everyday but i still have to service it atleast once a year haha

Totally agree about watch winders, really are unnecessary, though they do look cool I admit. My local watch maker gave me this advice. Now, I do change my watch almost every day, I've 25 in total but 7 of them are battery powered, so none of them are unused for a long period. He did say if any of the watches are sitting there for a long while. Just give it a quick wind, just enough to get it started up, and immediately stop winding. Once every week or so is enough. You're keeping it going and just an hour a week will keep the lubrication active and you will have no wear and tear. He is vigorously anti watch winder and says there's absolutely no need for them. Of course some think differently, but this guy has over 40 years experience of watch making and repairs including Rolex and I believe him.

Yeh exactly, its not needed and can be used the way i say in the vid or if the collection is slightly smaller then just hand wind a few every few months or so

I don't believe watch winders are necessary unless you have watches that have grand complications like calendars that would be a pain in the ass to reset. If all you have is time and date, that is easy enough to reset. Also, like you said, it puts a lot of wear and tear on your watch.

I used to have a watch winder but they became glorified display cases 😅 It was useful at the beginning but as my collection grew, I didn't want to limit myself with the watches on the winder, so eventually i just turned it off since i veered towards the ones that weren't on the winder.

Please let me know how you like that winder there specifically. I got one off of Amazon that looked extremely similar to that one just in a slightly darker veneer for around 75 usd and it failed miserably after about six seven months kranich is the brand name it was going under I like you agree that a watch winder is not absolutely necessary it does make it convenient for someone like me who switches watches out multiple times per day lol and yes I'm being literal not every day is like that but I think I may have a problem lol 😂😂😂

I would not be a fan of winders, don’t see the need for them. 18 month warranty… likely that the motor would end up wearing out long before the watch movements leaving you with an overly large, expensive display case! 🙂 Good, honest review Zee as always!

Only reason I'm looking at a watch winder, is having a few vintage seiko automatics that can't be manually wound. Would only keep them in there to basically wind them when I'm wanting to wear them, never leaving them in there permanently

I have what looks to be the same one that I bought from Amazon some years ago. It ended up working intermittently them not at all. Not sure where to get it repaired or replacement parts.
I also find that mine is quite loud. I keep it on my dresser, about 3m (10 feet) from my bed. We can hear it at night. It does not bother you once you fall asleep, but it's certainly not silent.

Stop using my winders many years back I mainly used them just as you are but then I started getting into straps mostly exotics and that got me back into watches I wasn't wearing all that often A perpetual calendar piece is about the only watch that needs a winder if your going to be wearing it often Anyways you nailed yet another review my friend and Merry Christmas Happy Holidays and Stay Frosty 👍

Another good review Zee... I bought cheap watch boxes where the glue comes undone in hot weather. Bought a 4 watch winder, too much space for only 4 watches, too noisey as kept in my bedroom... now I have 3 wooden boxes (all the same x 12 slots) which works for me, and they are stackable, with glass lids... each to his own on this, but it has to fit into the house and life. As for the winding, agreed - it's not necessary anymore. Oh, and with 4 watch winders, the fit of the cushions is really important as the watches will bang against each other

  • @Conundrum191

Although I leave most of my watches spun down when I am not wearing them, I did pick up a Boxy brand winder a while back. I find it useful if I have a watch I'm wearing all week but want to wear something else for a weekend. Rather than let the weekday watch stop for half a day and have to reset the date and time, I just put it on the winder for that weekend. I do agree though outside of a moonphase or a perpetual calendar, it doesn't make sense to leave a watch on a winder all the time.
