The BJP has continued to reach out to Kerala but has managed to gain little foothold. The state, which will go to the polls on April 26, has seen a rise in the BJP’s vote share, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s party hopes to register its first Lok Sabha election victory this year.
Manisha Pande and Dhanya Rajendran spoke to journalists Aby Tharakan and Binu Karunakaran, and content creator Anusha Andrews, to understand why it’s taking so long for the BJP to gain popularity in the southern state.
With films such as Kerala Story, the BJP has been propelling narratives that can help it reach out to the Christian minority. “We were angry at the bad Malayali accent,” says Anusha.
Manisha and Dhanya also discuss how chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan is seen as a strongman in the state, the infighting within the anti-BJP alliance, the issues that matter to Kerala’s voters, and how the BJP is allying with right-wing Christian forces on planks such as “love jihad”.

Also, take some time out to look UP and see Keralites doing decent jobs abroad as well as within the state and country. Not everyone is perfect but the sense of the people here on whom to trust, and specifically whom NOT to trust in elections has been doing just fine. And will do just fine. BJP is pulling at the seams of Kerala's tolerant character and it's indeed working. While at an office in Chengannur last week, a man in his 60s with sandalwood paste on his forehead walked in on business and started a political discussion which soon progressed into all out praises for Modiji and trashing of Rahul and Gandhis and Muslims. He hailed the bulldozing of Muslims houses in North India and talked plain bullshit about them. I asked him where did he learn that kind of hatred and he said he has lived in Orissa, UP, MP etc and he knows them well. The guy went ballistic when I scratched BJP record a bit and looking at his mood, I felt it's better to leave and I did.
Manisha, the reason why it's not working for BJP here is 'NO MORE' the liberal mindset of the people, but the balanced population mix of Hindus, Muslims and Christians in every constituency. No prize for guessing why BJP performs better in Palakkad and Trivandrum, and why THE Panchayath where I live is ruled by BJP!

My experience of north Kerala is how a post Hindu society will look. Restaurants with Hindu bhagwans as decoration and beef served. It’s no composite culture for sure. For people who believe end of hindusim is enlightenment, it’s understandable why Kerala is a model state.

I come from thrissur there is no Islamophobic views among Christians the Christian live in city along with Hindus and the Muslims live in costal areas along with Hindus..there is no communal faultline in thrissur because the Hindus there are seen as kind of docile community who are happy with poorams and pulikali not really want to be take part in the cities gold or other business..so Christian only have these bitter sweet feelings that it’s a city known for pooram and pulikali not for Christmas or Easter but they can live with it…
There are some Malayali Christians who have Islamophobic views, and I think people call them Chrisanghis. I wonder why these people do not question the atrocities by BJP and RSS against Christians in North India where BJP is in power.

Christians of Thrissur were never into agriculture they are traders and educationalists still have huge financial and political influence in city, where they mingle with worker Hindus in their shops, who are very much happy with their cultural and social influence in city..there is no region where Christians of thrissur and Muslims of thrissur live together they are concentrated in different regions and live with Hindus..but Christians,Muslims or Hindus of thrissur are not hardcore political voters,like in Kannur or Malapuram..they vote for anyone who can develop the region and Suresh Gopi stood a good chance of winning before both other candidates were announced to be frank were very much heavyweights and now he got crushed between them..

The most hypocritical society I have seen in my life is malayali.. If the Malayalees were really secular, then only Muslim would always win in Ponnani and Malappuram. Similarly, in Kottayam, Ernakulam and Pathanamthitta, a Christian candidate would not have to win everytime. The only reason why all parties are fielding ezhava candidates in Attingal in 2024 election is because of the fact that there are about 60% ezhava votes there.
