I have to disagree the recession started at the 1986 tax reform act and has just gotten worse for the majority of people. And in the 1970s they started taking farm land after the government wouldn't allow them to export the crops that their entire operations were built on to today where 2 friends from high school from wealthy parents, are facing foreclosure if they don't borrow money to remove a 1200 acre vineyard from their inherented property now that his father passed.
I sold building smaller off grid...I was sick of mortgage and insurance... insurance tells you how you can live...I now have a wood stove and r40 12 inch walls..500 year land taxes... chicken's and 40 acre view of Lake Superior... anyone wanting to hang in the game... enjoy and good luck... simple is way better

To me the only way to truly get warm is from a good ole wood stove. we moved to town. we have a gas furnace. nothing like a wood stove to get warm by! i do have a wood cook stove on the back porch but its not hooked up and doesnt have a top to it. we are looking for a top plate.

As a retired HVAC TECH and taught it for five years , I can tell you that price per / btu unit of electical heat compared to gas heat per/ btu unit costs is a lot more ! And in the winter time , if the electricity goes down ,you have no heat BUT natural gas flows as the gas companies have back up generators to pump natural gas ,so in effect , you will always have heat ,maybe no fans but heat will circulate ! I' ve talked a lot of people out of electrical heat , as with heat pumps , to natural gas heat ! As a man that went through 4yrs.of college in the 1960's , I have a full and good knowledge of HVAC , not to speak of my 42 years of experience at commerical heating and cooling O.K.!
My #1 priority is to stay warm. So when I got a small inheritance I bought a wood cook stove. Now if the power goes out I will be warm and can cook. And if it stays off forever, I can be providing both to neighbors, too.

My new house in California (2023) has an electric water heater. The water barely gets warm and it takes much longer to warm up than my old house that has a gas water heater. Multiple plumbers have come to check it out and it is running as it should. All new homes in my county are 100% electric. Electric is more costly to run than gas powered appliances. Everything California does is lacking common sense.
Not to mention all the water that is wasted to get hot water! Am surprised they aren't mandating tankless water heaters...that's probably their next move.
add a water heater recirculating pump (lowes $270) .. it will keep your pipes warm and give you instant hot water to the whole house...your hot water is cooling from the water heater to the tap most likely due to exposed pipe so when the hot water travels through it becomes cold.

here's what I do, I bought a small electric heater for 20.00, it has two settings on it, one for 750 watts and another setting for heating a whole room which is 1500 watts. I turn the heat off in my apartment and only heat the room that I am in, it saves me a bundle because the electric bill is included in my rent.

I live in NW Arkansas. We dont have piped natural gas but use Propane. We have grown 3x in population and are still using the same powerplant that was built in 1974. Eventually we will reach maximum demand and have rolling blackouts. So we installed a 500 gallon Propane tank a d replaced our defunct electric stove. The heat from the stove helps heat the house...we are saving 20 percent on our electric bill as the heat pump moves the hot air around . These eco loons are crazy. Arkansas is a lot of things but its a free state as far as guns energy and schools are concerned

Hi Dan! Your discussion on the boat slip waiting list reminded me to look at the list I have been on for three years. When I looked about 6 months ago I was number 78. I looked 15 minutes ago and I was number 30! That's the biggest jump on the list I've ever had. The list has always had over 120 people on it, and often more than 130. I noticed the list only has 115 on it now. It's a fairly large well to do lakefront community. Is it due to the economy? Maybe.
Anybody who's taken Physics 101 knows that "no natural gas" mandates are the *opposite* of green. If you burn gas to create electricity, that about an instant 30% energy loss compared to burning the gas directly to heat home air or hot water. You don't get to change the laws of thermodynamics.

There is no middle class since the Reagan Revolution when 401k's replaced pensions and wages have not kept up with inflation for 50 years. All the gains in Gross National Product went to the top 10% also since Reagan was President.
My current home has only electric heat option. Every night I turn the heat down to 60 F. Just enough to keep pipes from freezing. During the day, never set it above 65 F. Cannot afford the electric bill otherwise. Oh, and NEVER turn on AC in summer.
I use elec. space heaters, only turn on when I need a certain room warm...my PGE bill went down over 1/2 from last year ( i do have gas furnace I rarely use) YET, PGE sends me "warning" emails I am "using too much electricity" ...said my bill would be $400 + for Dec. Just got it the other day, is $200...their "sky is falling" BS

To change from gas to electric water heater, you have to get a new dedicated electric plug preferably 220 at the heater. So the cost of change out is the water heater plus the new electric line, new breaker (if the breaker box has room) if not then upgrade the breaker box and rewire everything. I can't see 30k per apartment but it would be a good chunk of change.

we have a natural gas furnace and we freeze in our house. There is one furnace to heat the whole place up. its in the center of our almost 800 sq. foot home. The way to go is small home,small auto. If it gets super super cold. we haul in our buddy heaters into the living room. That sure helps. Thanks Dan. great video!

I don’t know the statutes, but, There are federal laws protecting the natural gas industry and other forms of energy. They tried this in New York, and their laws were thrown out as illegal. Had something to do with commerce, and how natural gas is piped throughout the nation. Local and state laws cannot preempt, federal laws, especially when it comes to national flow of energy. Going to be interesting to see how these communists wish to proceed.
I'm a small business. I went to order some supplies, and I'm shocked at how much the price has increased and the sheer lack of the supplies being in stock. I used to go to just one place because they had good prices, good selection, and good quality. I"m now shopping at three different suppliers to get what I need at a decent price. And I'll be starting off the New Year by probably raising my prices (again).

We live in an old Italianate house built in 1884. We close off rooms in the winter and keep the heat at 64 degrees. I grew up in an old farmhouse, heated by coal. We didn't heat the upstairs. Lots of blankets!!! I was shoveling coal and taking out ashes at age 10. I don't like too much heat. My mother slept with her window cracked in the winter. It's healthier.

I worked for the Department of Energy, federal government for 24 years in the Pacific Northwest (PNW). I am currently retired. Electricity is sold and transferred to California from the PNW regularly. With the growing population in the PNW and the lack of snowpack in the mountains seeming to be happening more and more often, that provides water for hydroelectricity, I have NO IDEA WHERE ADDITIONAL ELECTRICITY FOR CALIFORNIA WILL COME FROM. This strong push to get rid of natural gas and force the use of electric cars it such a big mistake!!! Where is the additional electricity coming from????? As of now, according to what I know, there is NOT enough electricity in the USA to fulfill this new requirement for electricity. Seems like those pushing getting rid of natural gas and pushing electric vehicles forgot, or never did know, where all this additional electricity will come from. Your story about the ignorance of modern politicians and lawmakers dovetails into an answer I gave yesterday. Someone pointed-out the advanced age of our Congress members, and asked where the younger folks were. I replied that Congress members are so old because the younger spawn-of-the-rich are too lazy and/or stoopid to handle public office. We, the Working Class don't count. We are ineligible for such offices, as we lack the necessary means and connections (e.g. a typical reelection campaign for U.S. Senate runs around $30 Million). This is why we feel that we live in a tyrannical dictatorship.
What I don't understand is where do they think the electricity is coming from? Electricity just doesn't come and there is not going to be nearly enough coming from solar or wind. We need to burn fossil fuel either to make our cars , homes, machines work or at the other end to make the electricity.
This wouldn't work for me in Minnesota. I have all gas appliances and a 100 Amp electric service. I would have to rewire the house and upgrade to a 200 Amp service. The costs would be astronomical.
Both types of water heaters are very good. And also an instant water heater. I have an electric unit and it gives very good service. As a Remodeling Cotractor I install both :)
Dan, I was a HVAC contractor for 45 years and there was either a problem with your friends heater or the thermostat just wasn't turned high enough. I have had a heat pump which is all electric in my home for 43 years, and I can keep my home any temperature I want. I do like gas heat, but electric heat is just as good, unless your electric rate is way higher than your gas rate. You are right about it being crazy to make an owner of a home or building to change to electric heat if they have a good working gas heater. I live in Oklahoma.
The thing that makes it really ridiculous is things like water heaters and furnaces are pretty efficient, thermally speaking. That is, the amount of heat they produce for the amount fuel they burn, or the amount of heat they produce per unit of CO2 produced, is better than the efficiency of burning fuel to make steam to drive a turbine to generate electricity, transform to grid voltage, back down to household voltage, and then finally run through an appliance. If the idea is to reduce our carbon footprint, the only way that can happen is if we drive those appliances off of renewably generated electricity but the demand we would create by rushing a transition will mean that a majority of generation will remain fossil-fuel based for the foreseeable future. If the deadlines were decades instead of years, ok, maybe it would worthwhile. But with all gas appliances and all automobiles needing to replaced by 100% electric within the next 3-10 years, we basically have to increase electrical generation by a factor of 4-6x. That will only be done coal and gas. Nobody is willing to build new nuclear and the cost/availability of wind and solar (and the resource cost of building enough storage to even out their daily/seasonal delivery fluctuations) is simply prohibitive.
They want to eliminate gas water heaters, but will power an electric one with coal. These people are absolute morons.

I wonder if the mixing valve in the shower mechanism may have a problem. Shouldn't brand new but so much comes out of the factory faulty these days.

Gas needs to be grandfathered in. New construction can be built to new codes. However the grid cannot handle the increased electric load. Not possible! This state sucks!!
Electricity is generated by burning fossil fuels. That means the same gas that is used in the stove and water heater.

I live in NW Arkansas. We dont have piped natural gas but use Propane. We have grown 3x in population and are still using the same powerplant that was built in 1974. Eventually we will reach maximum demand and have rolling blackouts. So we installed a 500 gallon Propane tank a d replaced our defunct electric stove. The heat from the stove helps heat the house...we are saving 20 percent on our electric bill as the heat pump moves the hot air around . These eco loons are crazy. Arkansas is a lot of things but its a free state as far as guns energy and schools are concerned

Hi Dan! Your discussion on the boat slip waiting list reminded me to look at the list I have been on for three years. When I looked about 6 months ago I was number 78. I looked 15 minutes ago and I was number 30! That's the biggest jump on the list I've ever had. The list has always had over 120 people on it, and often more than 130. I noticed the list only has 115 on it now. It's a fairly large well to do lakefront community. Is it due to the economy? Maybe.

Anybody who's taken Physics 101 knows that "no natural gas" mandates are the *opposite* of green. If you burn gas to create electricity, that about an instant 30% energy loss compared to burning the gas directly to heat home air or hot water. You don't get to change the laws of thermodynamics.

My current home has only electric heat option. Every night I turn the heat down to 60 F.
Just enough to keep pipes from freezing.
During the day, never set it above 65 F.
Cannot afford the electric bill otherwise.
Oh, and NEVER turn on AC in summer.

I use elec. space heaters, only turn on when I need a certain room warm...my PGE bill went down over 1/2 from last year ( i do have gas furnace I rarely use) YET, PGE sends me "warning" emails I am "using too much electricity" ...said my bill would be $400 + for Dec. Just got it the other day, is $200...their "sky is falling" BS

To change from gas to electric water heater, you have to get a new dedicated electric plug preferably 220 at the heater. So the cost of change out is the water heater plus the new electric line, new breaker (if the breaker box has room) if not then upgrade the breaker box and rewire everything. I can't see 30k per apartment but it would be a good chunk of change.
UTILITY BILLS -- Here in NORTH DAKOTA ... Montana Dakota Utilities (MDU) has RAISED ELECTRIC HEATING RATES so high that it's become totally UNAFFORDABLE now 😡

we have a natural gas furnace and we freeze in our house. There is one furnace to heat the whole place up. its in the center of our almost 800 sq. foot home. The way to go is small home,small auto. If it gets super super cold. we haul in our buddy heaters into the living room. That sure helps. Thanks Dan. great video!

I don’t know the statutes, but, There are federal laws protecting the natural gas industry and other forms of energy. They tried this in New York, and their laws were thrown out as illegal. Had something to do with commerce, and how natural gas is piped throughout the nation. Local and state laws cannot preempt, federal laws, especially when it comes to national flow of energy. Going to be interesting to see how these communists wish to proceed.

I'm a small business. I went to order some supplies, and I'm shocked at how much the price has increased and the sheer lack of the supplies being in stock. I used to go to just one place because they had good prices, good selection, and good quality. I"m now shopping at three different suppliers to get what I need at a decent price. And I'll be starting off the New Year by probably raising my prices (again).

We live in an old Italianate house built in 1884. We close off rooms in the winter and keep the heat at 64 degrees. I grew up in an old farmhouse, heated by coal. We didn't heat the upstairs. Lots of blankets!!! I was shoveling coal and taking out ashes at age 10. I don't like too much heat. My mother slept with her window cracked in the winter. It's healthier.

We have always had electric heating in Norway, but we used to have abundance of hydroekectricity.
My apartment has two electric furnaces, i have to jack up the heat in the winter because when the wind comes down the lake, it can get very cold. The building was constructed in 1993 with a super market attached to it. Still the lunatics will continue to run the asylum. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
We have an abundance of natural gas here and in Canada. no reason to use electric

I worked for the Department of Energy, federal government for 24 years in the Pacific Northwest (PNW). I am currently retired. Electricity is sold and transferred to California from the PNW regularly. With the growing population in the PNW and the lack of snowpack in the mountains seeming to be happening more and more often, that provides water for hydroelectricity, I have NO IDEA WHERE ADDITIONAL ELECTRICITY FOR CALIFORNIA WILL COME FROM.
This strong push to get rid of natural gas and force the use of electric cars it such a big mistake!!! Where is the additional electricity coming from????? As of now, according to what I know, there is NOT enough electricity in the USA to fulfill this new requirement for electricity. Seems like those pushing getting rid of natural gas and pushing electric vehicles forgot, or never did know, where all this additional electricity will come from. SHORTSIGHTED AND STUPID PEOPLE ARE MAKING DECISIONS THAT WILL AFFECT MANY OF US!!!!!
Your story about the ignorance of modern politicians and lawmakers dovetails into an answer I gave yesterday. Someone pointed-out the advanced age of our Congress members, and asked where the younger folks were. I replied that Congress members are so old because the younger spawn-of-the-rich are too lazy and/or stoopid to handle public office. We, the Working Class don't count. We are ineligible for such offices, as we lack the necessary means and connections (e.g. a typical reelection campaign for U.S. Senate runs around $30 Million). This is why we feel that we live in a tyrannical dictatorship.

What I don't understand is where do they think the electricity is coming from? Electricity just doesn't come and there is not going to be nearly enough coming from solar or wind. We need to burn fossil fuel either to make our cars , homes, machines work or at the other end to make the electricity.

This wouldn't work for me in Minnesota. I have all gas appliances and a 100 Amp electric service. I would have to rewire the house and upgrade to a 200 Amp service. The costs would be astronomical.

Dan, I was a HVAC contractor for 45 years and there was either a problem with your friends heater or the thermostat just wasn't turned high enough. I have had a heat pump which is all electric in my home for 43 years, and I can keep my home any temperature I want. I do like gas heat, but electric heat is just as good, unless your electric rate is way higher than your gas rate. You are right about it being crazy to make an owner of a home or building to change to electric heat if they have a good working gas heater. I live in Oklahoma.
The thing that makes it really ridiculous is things like water heaters and furnaces are pretty efficient, thermally speaking. That is, the amount of heat they produce for the amount fuel they burn, or the amount of heat they produce per unit of CO2 produced, is better than the efficiency of burning fuel to make steam to drive a turbine to generate electricity, transform to grid voltage, back down to household voltage, and then finally run through an appliance. If the idea is to reduce our carbon footprint, the only way that can happen is if we drive those appliances off of renewably generated electricity but the demand we would create by rushing a transition will mean that a majority of generation will remain fossil-fuel based for the foreseeable future. If the deadlines were decades instead of years, ok, maybe it would worthwhile. But with all gas appliances and all automobiles needing to replaced by 100% electric within the next 3-10 years, we basically have to increase electrical generation by a factor of 4-6x. That will only be done coal and gas. Nobody is willing to build new nuclear and the cost/availability of wind and solar (and the resource cost of building enough storage to even out their daily/seasonal delivery fluctuations) is simply prohibitive.
