I’m 18 now, and when was 15, I remember thinking of having an iphone airpods and watch, putting down and charging concurrently. Now when I do have all those, I looking for something like that, and can’t find anything legit. Have to charge everything seperately

I’m not mad that Apple canceled AirPower. I just think they weren’t expecting AirPower to be THAT far ahead of its time. It’s just not possible right now with today’s tech. It’s like Howard stark said: “I’m limited by the technology of my time, but one day, you’ll figure this out.” In time, AirPower will be possible. Just takes a little patience.

Not to mention the baseline of how much legal trouble they would get in by telling you they don’t make money off your data if they did.

I'd argue that my personal bodged implementation of MagSafe is the ultimate iteration since I stuck it to my bedside table with double sided tape. Now my phone locks into an _exact_ position perfectly and I can turn off my alarm without dealing with cables when I peel it off the fixed MagSafe.

What if they only turned on coils that the devices are charging, meaning no overheating problems, and the charging data is sent from device to device rather than device to AirPower to iPhone. Both pair with the iPhone and should be more than capable of telling the iPhone when it is charging, therefore the iPhone shows them on the notification screen. Maybe I am not right, but I think this may work, if the charger can detect where the phone is, it turns on the coil lined up there.

Wireless charging is not useful for users like me. I have a habit of using my iPhone and other Apples while charging, that means I need to pick them up. With a charging pad, I need to pick up the charging pad with my iPhone. A cable does not really disrupt my using experience, but a bloody big charging pad does. Plus charging pad may overheat my iPhone, or stop charging if I misplace it. That’s why when I went to buy a pair of AirPods 2, I went straight to the ones with regular charging cases, no reason for me to pay extra money for a function I won’t use (even I have one charging pad bought for testing the wireless charging function on my iPhone 8plus).
My magsafe charger got overheated while charging my airpods pro and it popped open, I had been using it for only a week. Looks like there is a long way to go before they can deliver anything like AirPower.
Why did the airpower need to send the charging data to the iPhone? Both airpods and the apple watch are devices that connect to the iPhone and could send the charging data through Bluetooth or NFC.
Now they have a solution for this problem: MagSafe for iPhone. The magnets just align the iPhone with the charging coil and it also communicates the charging state, like in the MagSafe power bank.
Apple using the excuse, doesn’t meet our high standards, doesn’t mean much. Butterfly keyboards are still in laptops and haven’t been improved or fixed.
The idea of the mat is a good one but ill conceived. Apple should just have Wireless Reverse charging on the next iPhones and iPads and call that "Air Power".

Why would the charge data from the Apple Watch and air pods need to be sent to the air power mat and then to the phone? Wouldn’t the AirPods and Apple Watch already be synced to the phone?
I wonder if an easier solution could’ve been having the phone, watch and AirPods communicate with each other on the AirPower mat via Bluetooth. Perhaps the problem of coil overlap could’ve been avoided by having designated areas on the AirPower mat for a specific device.
basically what happened was what happens at every company that has produced anything ever. at some point some higher up said "hey wouldn't it be cool if we did x?" and another higher up said "hell yeah, lets do it, tell everyone we're doing it" and then they actually went to their engineering department where they were told on no uncertain terms that what they're asking for is not possible.

Why would the charge data from the Apple Watch and air pods need to be sent to the air power mat and then to the phone? Wouldn’t the AirPods and Apple Watch already be synced to the phone?
Looking back 3 years after it was supposed to release, MagSafe kinda replaces the need for AirPower, as it can lock on via the magnets.

I wonder if an easier solution could’ve been having the phone, watch and AirPods communicate with each other on the AirPower mat via Bluetooth. Perhaps the problem of coil overlap could’ve been avoided by having designated areas on the AirPower mat for a specific device.
basically what happened was what happens at every company that has produced anything ever. at some point some higher up said "hey wouldn't it be cool if we did x?" and another higher up said "hell yeah, lets do it, tell everyone we're doing it" and then they actually went to their engineering department where they were told on no uncertain terms that what they're asking for is not possible.
Greg, great point about announcements. Apple generally has had success because of their announcement schedule. The new streaming services coming out are such a thing. I don't need em but that doesn't mean others won't pay for their streaming services. (:

Just the fact that Apple hasn’t shut down under the leadership of Tim Cook is saying something, something that says Tim Cook’s a great leader. I respect Tim Cook and nothing will change my mind. Tim Cook’s doing great.
Cook was a production/pipeline guy. You can tell because everything runs really smoothly from a business perspective in that way. A lot of it is the choice to reuse components rather than reinventing the wheel every 2 years
It had cooling issues? I thought that was up to standard... I mean airpower has *air* in it so it would meet expectation for over heating and thermal throttling
