How do you apply grass to your garden without the seeds sprouting more grass in your garden?

      *In support of Brooke's prepping.*
*PREPPERISMS: The following isn't meant to be an exhaustive list of Prepper knowledge, just inspiration. Please copy & share!*
*"MORE YOU KNOW, LESS YOU NEED"*
Skills are more valuable than stuff. Acquire as many practical skills & knowledge because they can't be easily lost, broken or stolen & practice them now! Remember, knowledge weighs nothing so "the more you know the _lighter_ your load".
*_Proverbs 22:3 "The shrewd one sees the danger and conceals himself, But the inexperienced keep right on going and suffer the consequences."_*
*"TWO is ONE & ONE is NONE"*
Because stuff gets lost, broken, stolen have backups to your backups of essential items listed below.
      *"RULE of 3"*
You can die after 3 seconds of indecision during a fatal threat (predetermine reasonable losses) 3 minutes without air (practice freediving breathing techniques) 3 hours of exposure to extreme weather (practice hydrotherapy to enhance body thermo-regulation) 3 days without water (practice economy of movement & water fasting) 3 weeks without food (practice fasting) 3 months without a long term plan (because seasons change) 3 years without a partner/team (screen members now) 3 decades without reproduction (new generation is necessary)
      *FOUR SELF-DEFENSE*
EVASION (head-on-a-swivel; become a "Grayman"; hand-signals & covert language just for the team)
PERSUASION (humble negotiation/bartering, reading body language, micro expressions, listening, psychology, persuasive language patterns)
DEFENSE (if evasion/persuasion fails, target their eyes, throat, groin, ears, knees, feet then escape; resilience & tenacity can outstrip strength & speed)
DEFENSIVE TOOL (Although firearms may be common, it may be wise to consider a concealable range defense tool with low maintenance & not dependent on manufactured ammo, such as an adjustable cane/walking staff, baseball bat, crowbar, slingshot, bullwhip)
      *FIVE to SURTHRIVE!*
True, we should all be prepared to survive without energy/electricity or public water. But creating energy & water off-grid means more than just surviving, but it's thriving!
SOLAR POWER SYSTEM: solar panels, battery bank, inverter
WIND GENERATOR: wind turbine, battery bank, inverter.
HANDCRANK GENERATOR: gear ratio allows just one person to turn a handle & generate power.
COMBO GENERATOR: generator combines as many of the other sources above.
DEHUMIDIFIER: can pull water right out of the air!
PROs: Solar & Wind power increased by adding more panels, turbines, or batteries.
Handcrank can be connected to a bicycle, can generate electricity 24/7 & isn't dependent on the weather
Dehumidifier (large model) can provide upto 8 gallons of water per day (depending on humidity level) even in an apartment.
CONs: No sun or wind, or human fatigue may limit power. Dehumidifiers are useless without electricity & if the air is contaminated be prepared to filter the water.
      *SIX SHIELDED SHELTER*
_"Watchout With Wetty, Windy, Warmy, Wiggly, Wicky & Widow-makers!"_
Build shelter where it's high & dry above "wetty" during rain, but close to a "wetty" source to stay hydrated; where "windy" is blocked when it's cold, but allow "windy" when hot; where fire wood keeps you "warmy" when cold, but shaded from "warmy" when hot; where you're off the ground away from "wiggly" critters & off a "wicky" cold ground; & not under "widow-maker" dead trees/limbs that could fall on you. Remember, you need something to sleep under, to sleep on & to sleep in.
      *SEVEN HEAVEN SKILLS*
Study videos for these force multipliers & practice daily/wkly:
      LEARNING/REMEMBERING (attention=retention, repetition=recall, adaptability=survivability)
HABIT CREATION (Study "Atomic Habits" & use cues, craving, routine, reward; success is the compound interest of effective habits)
MEDITATION (enhances attention span, pain & stress management)
HEALTH (Eat better but less; Move more often & faster; Hygiene your machine by keeping clean)
      FASTING (autophagy & strengthens self-control/self-discipline)
FIRST-AID/TRAUMA (YOU are your "first responder", practice M.A.R.C.H. algorithm)
NEGOTIATION (bartering, reading body language, micro facial expressions, active listening, psychology, persuasive language patterns)
      *EIGHT PREP RATE*
Acquire EVERYTHING to survive for an entire short period first, before getting more stuff for a longer period because you do NOT want to have a year's worth of stored water but only 1week of food & no medical supplies when everything collapses!
1ST: 1 week of water (1gal per person per day), 1 week of food (pre-cooked non-perishable), medical supplies, 1 week of hygiene supplies, 1 week of etc, etc.
2ND: enhance home security, safety & security protocols
3RD: 3 months of water, food, etc
4TH: enhance transportation dependability & security & options (bicycle, cart)
5TH: Bug-Out-Bag Myth that bugging out is your first option? NO! But despite the fact that sheltering-in-place is optimum, we never know when we may be forced to bug-out, so make a Bug-Out-Bag because it's "Better To Have It & Not Need It, Than Need It & Not Have It".
6TH: 6 mos mix of more water, food, etc, seeds (heirloom Non-GMO seeds are greater than gold), & physical library of educational prepping books.
7TH: Self-Sustainable Sustenance, food production (study & practice gardening/small animal farming [chickens, meat rabbits, etc])
8TH: Priority Faith to pray for wisdom & humility to answer "If I only had enough time/money to acquire just one more skill/thing before a collapse what would it be?"
*_Beginners should just strive to survive without electricity for 72hrs. Over time, work up to surviving a nuclear attack, because then you will most likely be able to survive every other kind of disaster. Remember, "prepping" is not an event, it's a lifestyle._*
      *NINE CORE MEMBERS*
Anyone opposed to your core Principles & Purposes of life should NOT be in your group!
      GUARDIAN (Security, safety)
HEALER (doctor, medic, nurse, therapist, herbalist)
      PROVIDER (hunts, forages, scavenges)
TINKERER (engineer, scientist, mechanic, handyman, tradesman)
FARMER (reproduces animal/plant food; "When you can feed yourself, you can free yourself!")
CLERK (organizes supplies, equipment, tasks, training)
CAREGIVER (domestic [cooking, cleaning, laundry, etc], counselor, teacher/babysitter)
LEADER (empathetically unemotional, logical, negotiator; will emerge as core group is established)
CHAMELEON (quick learner, adaptable, willing to change positions & either already has or studies other skills not listed here)
*_All skills should be cross trained._*
      *B.O.B. (BUG OUT BAG)*
_(Do NOT confuse this with a smaller "Go-bag/Get-Home-Bag" kept in your vehicle)_
Without compromising quality, get the lightest weight versions of these items & choose multifunction tools to keep total pack weight to less than 20% of a healthy person's body weight. Some examples are included below but there are always better quality items so do your own research. Remember, the best survival items are the ones you already have & know how to use, & since the more you know the lighter your load, study ways to improvise equipment/tools in the field & practice now with what you have. Outside of the B.O.B. hang a small bag of "survival pocket litter" that you immediately empty into your pockets/hipsack & onto your belt that includes one item from each of the following categories, just in case you get separated from your B.O.B.
CONTAINER: Collapsible 1liter plastic water bottle or metal capped canister; mini-Sawyer water filter (water is 8lbs per gallon, so in addition to having some initial water, the ability to filter discovered water while on the move will be vital to keeping hydrated & your load light)
CUTTING: Knife (fixed, full tang), Multi-tool w/folding knife, saw, screwdriver set, scissors, can & bottle opener, &pliers
COMBUSTION: lighters, ferro rods, fresnel lens (magnifying glass), tinder, candle, flashlight, headlamp
      CORDAGE: rope/paracord/duct tape
COVERING: 55gal plastic drum liners OR sleeping bag; hammock tent OR 5x8 heavy duty plastic tarp; 2 pair socks, 2 underwear, 2 undershirts (avoid cotton - cotton kills), long-sleeved shirt/pullover hoodie, pants (no shorts), boots, work gloves, face masks, bandana/shemagh, hat, mosquito netting, light rain jacket w/hood, (unless you live where it's colder than ⅓ of the year do not pack a heavy winter coat, just layer up all clothing when cold & insulate with plastic/rain poncho), avoid camouflage or brightly colored clothing because it's not "Grayman"
CARE: First-Aid/Trauma kit (tourniquet, compression bandages, assortment of gauze, medicine, etc); Hygiene (comb, 3 hand towels, toothbrush, bar soap, toenail clippers, toilet paper, sewing kit, upholstery thread, etc)
CONSUMPTION: Food (pre-cooked non-perishable -MREs/jerky) & Fishing/Hunting tools (fish/gill net, snare wire, traps, hooks line & tackle, slingshot, crossbow, gun)
COMMUNICATIONS: Whistle, handcrank/solar AM/FM weather radio; walkie talkie, CB or ham radio, Topo Maps (local, state, country) & Compass; Energy (charger cords, handcrank/solar charger, batteries)
CREDENTIALS: (pin reminder note on B.O.B. to get these before leaving) birth certificate, passport, marriage license, house & car keys.
CASH: Initially cash will still be King; small pocket-sized barter items of non-perishable food, Trade Coffee, sample bottles of liquor, gold/silver chain, candy/gum)
CRAFTING: Axe/Machete, Folding/bow/wire saws, Clawbar/prybar 10" (doubles as hammer & key to city), Self-adjusting wrench, Locking pliers, MultiBit Screw&Nut Driver, Electrical wire stripper&crimper
CREATIVE: playing cards, harmonica (can scare off predators), pocket bible, SAS Survival Guide.
*_"But what if nothing happens?"_** It's okay to be wrong, just don't be dead wrong!*
*Liberty=Peace & in the name of my Savior Jesus Christ I pray to his father, Almighty God Jehovah, that we always enjoy both!*

A Native American garden has sweet corn, pole beans and squashes, even pumpkins planted together. These are the three sisters. The beans give nitrogen to the corn, the squashes cover the ground and keep it moist for the corn as well as keeping weeds down. The corn provides a place for the beans to climb and fruit, as well as entice pollinators for the corn and squash. Spearmint planted helps keep some bugs and critters out of the garden ( most mints). your garden looks great.

    • @tracythomas7692
      @tracythomas7692 4 роки тому +8

The Three Sisters garden was a high carbohydrate garden. The corn was for grinding, beans for dry beans and squashes/pumpkins. All stored for the winter and provided carbs that are so needed when eating a high protein diet of meat. Potatoes are also vital for the prepper garden since they store a long time and provide much needed carbs.

Brooke, I'm so happy you are sharing your 'prepper' journey. My church has emphasized self-reliance since I was a kid in the 70's. As a kid I was a reluctant gardener, but as an adult I have come to enjoy gardening.
One of the biggest lessons I have learned over the years is to begin where you are, which looks different or everyone's circumstances. As a single grandma, my food storage will look different than for a family of six.
Another thing I would say is to not get discouraged if things don't work out. Reflect on it. Learn from it.
Finally, Mylar bags are the bomb!!! They are reusable, so well worth the initial investment. I have opened of 10 year old oatmeal, pasta, and beans that still were in great condition.

I got a garden for Christmas this year ❤️! For 9 months my hubby put his raise increase away and at Christmas made a beautiful wood treasure box and gave me my new dream garden! We bought our property in the deep woods of northern Minnesota and have been so busy remodeling the homestead that a garden was financially and time wise un achievable. He knew how important my garden is to me and..... surprise! So this spring I put in a 40x30 fully fenced raised bed garden system. It is breathtaking and bursting with goodness! I am truly blessed!

Planting your own garden is the best. You have a great variety of vegetables and herbs. Did you know that the red and green lettuce, you could just cut it with a knife and leave a little over an inch in the ground, the lettuce will regrow till freezing time. I was raised on the farm with a huge vegetable garden to feed a family of 13. Then I gardened till I was 75 yrs. old. Had to move closer to our youngest daughter, so do miss gardening at 79. Love your videos Brooke. You are such an enthusiastic and positive person.

We planted in straw bales and loved them! No weeds! Yay! We made the mistake of planting two tomatoes in each and by the time August rolled around I literally had a tomato plant jungle! Unfortunately because of the overcrowding we developed blight on our San Marzano plants and I lost many beautiful tomatoes. Lesson learned 😢
This year I am only planting Plum Regal (blight resistant and just in case) and Bonny Best tomatoes. The Bonny Best are a fantastic tasting duel purpose tomato and the plums are strictly for canning.
Where we live we have lots of deer, and feral cats. Thankfully the bales stop the kitty’s from using our garden as a litter box. I started throwing my dogs poo into the weeds around my backyard and since I started doing that the I had zero damage on my vegetables.

I live in a second floor room above a business and have no yard or outdoor space to call my own, but I do have window boxes to grow plants and flowers in, so I am thankful for that. Also, the landlord allows me to grow flowers along the backside of the building where I live. It's a challenge to maintain the garden because it is in the busy part of town with public access and alot of foot traffic. The people seem to appreciate it but some are disrespectful. I've had plants stolen, broken, trash thrown on it and even sometimes people urinate on it. Sad what people are capable of.But we carry on, and all in all, I really enjoy the peace I get from creating something that makes my neighborhood look nice.Maybe I'll send you some photos.Anyway, I know we share much in common and I really appreciate you!

The chickens in the Chicken House are not using any antibiotics and are tested daily. One of the agreements I made when buying my farm was I was not to have any fowl because of biosecurity. On the plus side, the Chicken House can not use eggs which are too big/small, wrong color, ect... The eggs must be of a certain volume or they are rejected. The company next door will not allow A USDA inspector to enter the houses because of biosecurity, so the chicken house can not sell the eggs or chickens.. Therefore, I am able to get all of the eggs I want. I eat goose sized, double yokers and I get cases of eggs to supplement my pig feed. .. I have never seen/smelled a chicken since I've lived here..

I actually have lived in a cabin in the redwoods of northern California, without electricity, or modern conveinances. It was in the 90's. Hard but worth every minute. I had my son in that cabin, so it holds a special place in my memories. I did all wash by hand, taught my kids, kept that wood stove hot, and planted flowers in the spring.Quite the adventure, and I still miss the woods and the peace I enjoyed there.

Agree, the garden is good therapy and distraction. Hi Brooke, you have a nice diversity in your garden, will be cool to see more as it comes to harvest time. I always struggled with cukes and pickles, until a friend told me to turn under my pumpkin leftovers for the next season. Did this and it worked, I also use grass clippings from neighbors field...free and a water saver..stay safe and healthy....

Great looking garden Brooke ,, you really have a green thumb .. For that region I'm amazed on the growth you already have..
Good to see the guards on watch ,, 14 yr. Old long haired simiese ,, Wow,,he's beautiful !! ..
My garden efforts change a little each year ,, but for this year I have 6 separate beds and 4 containers growing stuff...total varies from 600-1000 sq. ft.
Kitchen garden with ..4 types of leaf greens ,,radishes and carrots.
A full bed of Bush beans with a couple bell pepper plants dropped in the ends.
A bed of tomatoes -heirloom ,, beefsteaks and romas.
A bed of cucumbers ..some vining on ground and some climbing on trellis.
A bed shared with sweet corn and onions.
A bed of melons..watermelon ,, cantaloupe and honey dew.
2 additional containers (red 20 gal feed tubs) with Roma tomatoes and 2 containers with jalapenos.
1 pear tree showing good fruit this year,
6 more fruit trees planned for this year ,, apples ,, pears and plums of mixed variety,,, but seems to be a problem from supplier ,,may have to hold off until later months..
No potatoes this year,, couldn't find seed potatoes anywhere around ...... oh well ,, they yield well but don't keep long for me,,I don't have anywhere cool enough for storing and haven't gotten into canning them.. .....and no squash of any type this year...
It's all fun to do and of course provide for meals,,,, I give quite a bit away to family,, neighbors and co-workers ....
With canning ,, dehydrating ,, vac. seal and freezing more than I need......I have only gardened in spring/summer/fall months but kinda thinking about building a cold frame cabinet assembly and growing a winter garden ,,will see what things look like then....
... Well I've babbled enough for now .........HAPPY GARDENING !!............Stay Safe and God Bless ......
    P.S. : ..... WOW !! After reading this ,, it's no wonder why I have trouble losing weight and inches.....and I'm not a vegetarian either........lol..

Heat of July, along with humidity here in central Illinois. Our garden over the years has gotten a bit smaller, more specifically more sweet corn and tomatoes and fewer beans. My husband dotes on his sweet corn and I dote on my tomatoes because I start them from seed in winter, along with peppers. I feel closest to God in my garden, nothing like playing in dirt and then watching things grow. We farm corn and soybeans, too, and watching them grow over the season is close to our hearts. Everyone would be kinder if they planted a garden! Time for victory gardens again. Be blessed!🌞🥦🥒🥕🌽🥬🍆🧅🧄

During winter I dig in sand, kitty litter and grass clippings into our garden. Sand helps keeps the dirt soft and easy to dig over, kitty litter helps to keep a bit of moisture in the garden and helps provide oxygen and grass clippings as a compost. Our garden does really well each summer.

Nice garden Brooke! I am in my second year of gardening and learning. I have raised beds where i grow the most essential stuff in my mind. Potatoes, leeks, onions, carrots, herbs, sugar snaps, lettuce, tomatoes, chili, bell peppers and beetroots. We have had a hotspell, and some of my garden didnt like it so much even when watered, but now i see it is starting to thrive and i love it! Its fun, and i thing its important to grow your own food. You learn a bunch and you get a bigger appreciation for nature and the food you serve on your plate. It is about time to harvest the potato and sugar snaps, and the lettuce i eat every day.

Oh what a great garden! I thought I was the only one to use grass as a mulch - everyone thought I was crazy. Our yard got the run off from the field behind our house - my grass benefited from there fertilizer. Mowed twice as much in my back yard lol. Flowers, herbs, and garden benefited from my grass clippings :-). I need raised beds now (bad back). Miss all my time outside. I’m in the process of building a raised bed garden using corrugated steel roofing cut in 1’ strips and riveted together into 30” circles. Hardware cloth will go underneath to keep out those pesky rodents! An 8’ piece will make 2 for under $24 and they will outlast wood. I willbe doing 12 total and have 5 Garden Patch growboxes that will help create a sacred geometry design in my front yard. I’m excited about starting my own sweet potato slips, planting regular potatoes, and whatever else suits my fancy.

Hi Brooke, love your videos. Brings back memories of my childhood...6 of us living in a 3 room log house, no running water, unless you ran from the cistern with the bucket... (at least until I was 8) and no indoor bathroom. When I got married, I had to ask my mother-in-law how to clean a toilet. She looked at me with a blank look and I told her the only way I ever cleaned the "toilet" was with a hose and broom 😂! Needless to say, she was shocked. I was raised on a 182 acre farm with chickens, beef cattle, hogs, hay, and row crops. We had a 60'x100' garden and canned everything. My favorite is seeing jars of pickled beets all lined up. I foraged for all the wild edibles I could find to make jelly and wine out of. Dad and I even made clover blossom wine one year. Now, my hint for your garden...we made arched hoops from cattle panels, staked the ends down, and use them for heirloom tomatoes and cucumbers to vine up. Since heirloom tomatoes grow until frost kills them here in Missouri, they can get to be 12 feet tall. Past any staking. But they just grow over the hoop, then you walk under and pick to your hearts content.

I am really glad I found you a month ago, I have been watching your videos and I watched the alone episodes you and Dave were in. I am so totally in agreement about the news, I am happy to ignore the crazy world and just watch you on you tube and grow my own garden, I am pretty proud of myself this year. I had saved lots of seeds from previous years and ordered seeds last fall for this spring. I put up a green house last year and this was the first time I used it. I stated all my plants from seed and did not have to buy even one plant, I even gave away some baby plants this spring. I planted lots of the same stuff you did, plus I planted a lot of different squashes. I am growing both winter and summer squashes, some watermelons and honey dew. I am planing on canning some spaghetti sauce and ketchup so i have a lot of tomato plants too. I am also a preper and love watching you adventures in the woods, keep them coming it helps me keep calm and sane knowing that others are out there who feel that same way I do.

Nice garden spot! I recently added "Sun Chokes" and "Comfrey" to my survival garden. The sun chokes are a fast spreading root crop that returns every year. Great in soups! Good item for harvest through the fall and winter. I only dig what I need at the time. The comfrey is an old time remedy used by many farmers. Called "Bone Knit" for it's healing properties and helping to heal broken bones in record time. I mainly grow it for a super food compost and a compost tea. I harvest it at least 4 times during the growing season and add around plants or make a tea for the plants. The reason comfrey is so good as a compost is the fact that it sends down a massive tap root from 12" to 20" feet down. It gets vital nutrients from deep down that other plants can't and stores it in its leaves. Chopping and dropping this plant really feeds everything quite well. Planting a large section of just comfrey will supply much of your mulch needs. Just plant these two items away from your regular garden spot. They tend to spread. Especially the sun chokes. Blessings to you and your family!

Brooke - You made me laugh - during the video one time you were looking at the cucumber and called them pickles! I think the same thing when I look at cucumbers too! And you are right I have always had a garden except the year my husband died, I love the food but its also a beautiful quiet time to reflect or just not think at all. God bless you girl!

We had 31 degrees last night. Yep it nipped the squash and tips of the potatoes. I'm at 3500 feet. I've got raised beds that are lined with hardware cloth to keep out the moles. But few things can lower stress like time in the garden.
