Magda Olivero and Fernanda Cadoni sing the Flower duet ("Una nave da guerra") from Puccini's "Madama Butterfly." This is a live recording from December 26, 1961 at Napoli's Teatro di San Carlo where Nicola Rescigno conducted. Other cast members included Renato Cioni (Pinkerton), Mario Zanasi (Sharpless), Anna Maria Borrelli (Kate Pinkerton), Mariano Caruso (Goro), Mario Ciofi (Il principe Yamadori), Aldo Giannini (Lo zio Bonzo), Mario Carles (Il commissario imperiale), and Luigi Paolillo (L'ufficiale del Registro).
Sorry; no photo of Cadoni could be found.

It's interesting to note that most people listening to Olivero's rather peculiar way of singing (her vocal production) would not expect her to last as long as she did. It wasn't really the 'textbook' singing that most sopranos who preserved their voices used, but apparently it worked for her, not to mention it really brought her voice to life and give her an incredibly unique, instantly recognizable style which I love. She made her Met debut (Tosca) at 65 and many say she was the best Tosca ever

One of the finest verismo sopranos of all time and my favorite soprano for most of Puccini's roles. I prefer Albanese live in this particular opera (or Moffo for studio) but Olivero in Lescaut and Tosca to me were unparalleled. Here in the US in addition to Tebaldi and Callas Milanov was also a big name even though Europeans never really seemed to care for her (and still don't). Yes I agree Zeani is one of the most underrated/overlooked sopranos of all time.
    I'm not familiar with Cadoni.

This is the first time I have heard Magda Olivero as Butterfly and I am not disappointed. Her singing style is idiosyncratic and peculiarly her own , but so full of emotion. Just listen how the audience cheers after the crescendo high note on Ecco e m'ami. She must have made a terrific impression in the theatre that night. Such delicacy when she sings in thirds with Suzuki. Truly unique.
