  • I found one of these old delays on craigslist in Cleveland (thanks Allen!) and then went over Nels' house for a quick lesson on what this amazing pedal can do. He has been using the same one since 1979 and uses it all the time. It is truly a sonic space machine. This is just a super quick intro, hopfully will do more soon.

    Ahhhhhh, the days of the early 2000's when you could still go on Craigslist and find vintage pedals for good prices.

    The part with the reverse and the octave when Nels plays arpeggios, that was "Belew-in-a-box!" I've wanted on of these since they came out.

    I love how Nels really enjoys this pedal, you can really experience his fondness with the way he describes its idiosyncrasies.

    It amazes me how Nels can take simple musical ideas and then turns them into something that can be an entire song.

    An incredible pedal! I much prefer the 16 second to say a 2880, or "standard" looper..there's nothing else like it..warm, funky, lo-fi-ish, yet has headroom. It's allowed me to expand my rig sounds far more than any other pedal I've ever bought. I own two of the "newer" ones. They have a great tonal footprint. A suggestion for anyone thinking about buying one..READ the manual. It doesn't operate like a time based loop-only pedal. Once you figure it out though..game over! 16 second is king!

    What a beautiful, mad pedal for beautiful, mad men. God bless the bold guitarist.

    With all due respect, the click track is very useful when composing loops. I've had one of those since they were first introduced, I still have my vintage one. This was killer tech for the time, and affordable!
    Also, the "clock out" worked with my keyboard "clock in", made for some cool composing. It also would sync with my drum machine "clock in". One just needs to do some experimenting....

    I saw Nels the other night in LA and couldn't figure out how he was doing that. Thanks for this! (I remember Bill Frisell using one back in the 80s.)

    Have the reissue and love it. I keep a big chord in the loop, sweep it slow and later slid it down an octave...and watch the air get sucked out of the audience when playing live😉 pretty sweet

    all due respect to Peter Stroud but his brief demo of the 16 second; but I never could see (until now) what Nels saw in the 16 second. Thank you so much for posting this!
    it is so much more than a looper

    Dude, nice.... Like your funny old guitar. Great sounds. I've got the 2880 Looper, and really enjoying the reverse sounds. Freaking awesome. And a ZT Lunchbox too. Would be nice to have one of those vintage suckers! Good work Nels.

    I have a Digitech pds 800 echo plus sampler that can create similar sounds, you can speed up and slow down sounds. it's 8 seconds delay, and it's pretty random as well, you can create otherworldly sounds with it. Still I would want one of these.

    Doesn´t the Clix Rate affect the speed of the delay/loop ??

  • @Ancaja123

    wow love the mod setting on this, very different than the reissue. much more of a pitch vibrato, and not as much of a phasing/chorus effect

    • @javiceres
      @javiceres 6 років тому +1

      Astral Deeps It should be pitch vibrato in both. If you mix wet and dry signals equally loud you have Chorus, if you, like in some examples in this video, set it to 100% wet you got vibrato. There should be nothing more to it.

    • @Ancaja123
      @Ancaja123 9 місяців тому +1

      Hmm...mine broke on me, but I have recordings where I can hear clearly, messing with the Sweep settings on an already recorded loop didn't act as a pitch lfo. Unless it was recording into itself...it very much sounded like a Phaser or Chorus added onto it. What you said makes more sense though.@@javiceres

      On second thought, I think you must be right, and maybe it had to do with the feedback setting. Wish I could get mine up and running again.@@javiceres

    I have the old one as well.My remote is dust.Thank you 80's OC recycler!.I have a short video.Check it out.EHX should have the ability by now to make a proper re-issue again that would allow to have the sample rate be variable with reverse and X2 time settings and have a a low-fi switch to filter out high end....low end etc.Dare I say this because the new stereo memory man gets pretty close.Are you listening EHX?CMON!!! you can do it.Reticon chips are getting extinct!!!!

      Sorta kinda almost the same-ish sounds, and not in the same way at all, if you know what I mean. If you’ll indulge me in a clumsy metaphor, it’s all well and good to have a self-flying dragon, but half the fun is in learning how to hang on.

  • @sirvidia
    @sirvidia 12 років тому +2

    it's basically an early looper. lot of pedals will do this, also with degrading sound.

    • @rocketsalad
      @rocketsalad 2 роки тому +2

      A lot of pedals have *tried* to do this, and to varying degrees of success some have, but don’t forget that the 16SDD is the reason they exist at all. It’s the OG, the grandpappy, the standard by which all others are judged simply because it has defined the standard for over forty years.
      Describing how it “feels” to use an old pedal like this is not unlike trying to review a vintage car in present day. Yes, of course modern hardware exceeds the vintage in all quantifiable aspects, ie “the specs,” and fundamentally they may all accomplish the same essential task they set out to do, ie driving or music making. However, in the case of cars and pedals as in the example I present here, where words and UA-cam videos fail is in conveying to the observer how they feel through the fingertips of the player or driver.
      There is something ineffable, immeasurable, beyond the scope of measurement and quantifiability, something that comes through your fingertips as you play through a tool such as this, a feeling akin to what one might feel transmitted through the steering wheel to the fingertips, through the pedals to the toes, through the seat to the butt of the driver of a vintage sports car.
      On paper, sure, the new car or new pedal will do the same thing as the old one and maybe the numbers will suggest they do it “better.” They do not, however, do it “the same,” and for some, that is everything.
      [Lastly I just want to add that this isn’t directed at you as a response or attack, per se, and that I’ve only used quotes around certain words to express that they are being used in a way outside of traditional meanings and definitions. Like, sure, we feel a pedal when we twiddle the knobs, but that’s not the feel I’m talking about, I’m talking about how how it “feels,” how it makes us feel, like in the hippy-dippy deep down in our soul kind of way, know what I mean? Anyhoo, thanks for reading this ✌️]

      @@rocketsalad I follow the sentiment/insight exactly. Most experimentalists know equipment (and pedals) have their own personality.. and like getting to know someone you must adapt to appreciate .
      I have one of these and use it very differently from probably anyone else in a space metal context so to speak for the music I create 👽
