    i think quite interesting is that all choosing the bat used it more like a shortsword. They swung it like a bat, yes. But with a bat you would normally not hold in in front of you because you have less time for swinging it back and then down on your opponent. You need it in a position ready to hit your opponent critically. To actually injure your opponent and not let him get to stab you, you would need to hit quite hard on important parts of the body so the knifeperson cant continue his attack, which he is defenitly able to when just hit lightly.

      You can still effectively jab with blunt weapons. Use it as a check, then lever with your off hand to bring in a weighted right hook.

    The problem with sacrificing the arm is that you do not know, how exactly your body will react to the trauma of perhaps getting both bones in the lower arm shattered. It might be directly debilitating.
    Anyway - quite interesting again. Did something similar with two sais against a European long sword a few years ago. Of course, the sais often come in pairs AND you can use them to hook.

      Another issue is how solid the hit is. A glancing blow that shatters the elbow and part of the forearm, and you should still be able to charge in. But if it hits you solidly on the elbow and snaps your humerus, you're not gonna be able to charge in. Getting hit like that is like running into a wall, it'll stop you dead in your tracks and make you stumble back; and it's not even a matter of the pain, just how much force it suddenly imparts.

      That's what I was thinking too. Besides that trying to block a metal bat as someone swings might work but I think more often than not the person swinging is trying to put damage into you so your hand/fingers are gonna be crushed.

    Thanks for another interesting video!
    Much would depend on the individual and the exact dimensions of the bat. They make small bats for fishing where someone can administer a quick kill to a fish with a knock on the head. These bats are very lightweight and just a little bit shorter than the one you used. They would be a good example of what you were using. Some softball bats are also fairly thin and lightweight. They would be longer than the bat you used and would be very effective even when wielded with one hand. Some of the larger baseball bats might be too heavy to use effectively with one hand. That would be a different kind of fight.

      I'd also wonder about using a bat as a shortened staff.
      A two-handed approach (like a baton) would mean you could defend and attack from either end, and easily transition to a large swing.

    Just a little insight from Filipino martial arts. For a blunt weapon like a bat to hit hard it's mostly about speed, not distance traveled.
    Speed can also be created by arcing attacks.
    A skilled stick fighter can throw powerful attacks the same way a whip or the one inch punch generates power

    If someone has a knife, and you have armor, you're still not safe. The single most salient point I ever learned in jujutsu was that someone that's good with a knife will know how to conceal it and you're not leaving without getting wounded, unless you can run faster than they can. I wouldn't engage anyone with a knife with anything shorter than a nuntibo or eku.

    The weight of a bat is not that much to make it cumbersome in a fight. A wooden bat weighs maybe 29-36 ounces. Aluminum bats weigh even less. In the video the guy with the bat looks more like he’s trying to fence with it rather then using as a clubbing weapon. The bat has huge advantage. It can be held with two hands giving it much more power and with size simply turning wrist adds more powerful impact. It’s disadvantage is if missed with swing you can be open for counter attack. Also the knife is faster and can cut.
    If you are not trained the bat is easier to attack and defend and it’s not even close. For someone who is trained the difference is smaller but the bat still has the advantage.
    On a side the size of the “bat” makes it look more like he’s fighting with a baton which be a very different weapon then a bat

    With a real, heavier bat, trying to hit someone with such short swings wouldn't have cause much harm. To cause damage with an heavier bat, the swings would have to be longer, making the attacks much slower.
    And the guy with the knife, should have shortened the distance with his body and stabbing with short thrusts, instead of leaning his body forward and trying to stab with an outstretched arm.

    • @stevenoconnor3256

      There's no significant speed difference, bats are top heavy so it's gonna help you follow through. You can thrust with them, smashing a person face. Me and my friend took a wooden bokken and hacked through a tree limb that was thicker then it was. If you understand how to use the bats momentum you can use its own wieght to carry you through multiple swings.

    • @storyteller5931
      @storyteller5931 Рік тому +1

      @@stevenoconnor3256 That is not how physics work. A bat being top heavy will make it more difficult to recover in between swings. A well balanced baton or Dan Bong, would be much better as a weapon.
      What matters truly in the attacks, is the kinetic energy which is mass times velocity squared, and although mass matters, velocity will matter much more. So for a bat swing to produce considerable damage on a target, the swings will have to be longer to have more speed in them, therefore the swings being slower. There is no such thing as short fast swings with a bat and producing much harm, unless the person being attacked is a five years old. Regarding the bokken and the tree limb, unless the bokken was made of much more denser wood than the limb, or got considerable damage too. I call BS on that. Unless you are the sort of person that believes that katanas can cut through metal too.
      I'm an Hapkido instructor with 20+ years under my belt, so I kind of know one thing or two regarding self-defense.
      I was surprised that in the video, both the knife user and that of the bat, didn't shown much expertise in their use.

Basically swing the bat in a full circle,you should understand if something is top heavy once you get it up to a certain point its weight will assist you in the swing. Take any stick you find in the backyard and then use it instead of a wooden bokken, a wooden bokken will break it 90% of the time. I'm very good at picking my wooden bokken, I always pick the ones that have weight to them. Only ever had one break and that's because I hit a giant log with it.

      @storyteller5931 Рік тому

      @@stevenoconnor3256 Your lack of self awareness is mind-blowing.
      By doing 360 degrees swings, the only thing you will do, is for most most of the time, managing to have the bat pointing away from the target, giving the defender ample time to avoid the swings by either retreating of closing the distance making the bat useless as a weapon.
      If you are gonna hit dry or rotten sticks, sure they'll break at the expense of damaging the bokken too, no matter how god it is. But I have no clue at what you think is being achieved by hitting any kind of tree branches or sticks with a bokken.
      That only shows you have no clue of what you are doing. Cutting mats with a katana, allows someone to see how clean a cut is, thus allowing to improve the technique. Hitting tree branches not so much. That you once even tried to hit a giant log with a bokken, thinking that anything but a broken bokken would be achieved, says volumes.

All you have to do is pick up a ball bat and understand that it's hard to stop a full swing. Hard to say which one would be better, and of course there are many factors to consider as with any weapon matchup. I think that if the knife fighter can get close enough to the bat fighter it’s likely a win for the knife fighter but if the bat fighter can successfully keep range it’s a win for them. But I think the biggest disadvantage of the bat is that is not weighted as an effective club for killing people, so even keeping the knife fighter at range is not an easy task because of how unbalanced they are as weapons.
    I think in this matchup, I’d prefer the knife, but I feel like I would still be facing a great deal of uncertainty facing an opponent with a bat.

      Just wondering if you've swung a typical baseball bat before. It is weighted as an effective club.

    RIght first of all this makes me angry because like most supposed martial arts on the internet its complete bullshido. I have a small softball bat and i would like to challenge anyone out there who believes they can defeat me with their knife. I also would like to challenge any Aikido "master" to take away my foam katana from me before i strike and make a hit/kill. WHen this bat lands and hits on their head, you will not be able to get your point with your knife as you are showing in this video. You will either be in shock from having your wrist smashed into dust or unconscious and in a come from a cracked skull. So all these points you claim to be scoring in this video are just ridiculous. If you dont believe me, then accept my challenge. All i will bring with me will be foam Katana and a small softball bat. You wont be hurt but you WILL be enlightened. The person holding the bat in this video hasnt got a clue how to wield it or use it properly.
