Richard fish Flat Heads go to Iowa and fish the tributaries of the Iowa River. Average Flat Head is about 20 pounds. We used set lines, a pole stuck in the river bank with a line about 3-6 inches off the water surface with a Sun fish for bait. Flat Head takes the bait hooking himself. Works like a champ.

I use a chicken rig from the shore, with 5/0 octopus hooks and strawberry jello and artificial vanilla marinated chicken breast, on a 20lbs mono line. I've never got a flathead with it, but I just dragged in a 26" 8-10lbs channel cat with it. The scoundrel hit so hard that, even with the drag loose, it snapped my rod holder at the 4 spot welds.

I have always sworn by those Abu Garcia Ambassadeur reels. I have two of the smaller 4500S and one of them I assembled out of 3 reels that my buddy and I had when I was a teenager. I used to put 80 lb mono on it and catch blacktip shark on it. It's missing a few parts by now (24 years after I assembled it), but it's still a nice reel and it's still sentimental to me.

Ya know? I got me some of them there Elmo nose hairs in mu dang ears!! Annoying as heck,,,,,,,,, ahhhh well.
I sure wish we had catfish in my area, but we just don’t, I have to go from Alberta, Canada all the way to Manitoba. 10 - 14 hour drive depending on what area I chose to fish in Manitoba. I usually go for Walleye and Trout, but I’m going to get a few rods and tackle together, line up a couple of buddies and drag my boat over there. You have inspired the next fella’s road trip! Sell my one walleye boat (kinda have 2, and get a nice 18 ft pontoon boat. Either this late fall or next spring! They currently are buried under an early heavy snow storm here. Might be a loonnggg winter!!! Yikes!
You, Elmo, and all yours take care and best wishes. GOOOOOOOD FISHINNNNNNN!!!!! EH.
