- To visit the real Dracula’s castle in Romania, you have to know which castle to visit. Perched atop a cliff like an eagle's nest, at an altitude of over 800 m, the Poienari Castle is one of the most impenetrable fortresses in Romania. Poenari is located in the Arges County, right on the Transfagarasan Pass, the road that passes through the Carpathian Mountains. 1,462 steps must be climbed to reach the ruins of Poienari Fortress, perched high above the surrounding area.

It's amazing how many people flock to Bran Castle even though it's not much associated with Vlad Tepes nor has any similarities to the castles described in Stoker's book.

Bran castle is very touristic. I think that a traveler has to read a few things before his/her travel.
@@jefe Bran looks beautiful, I'm sure if I'm in the area it would be a great place to check out. I'm assuming it probably has a rich history of it's own, though likely not as sensational, but the few books I've read about Vlad Tepes don't make much mention of it except to tell you it's not "Castle Dracula" of either fact or fiction.

This area of Romania is beautiful. Resembles Western North Carolina where I live a good bit, although it is a little more rugged.
