      Andorra has no standing army but signed treaties with Spain and France for its protection. Its small volunteer army is purely ceremonial in function. The paramilitary GIPA (trained in counter-terrorism and hostage management) is part of the national police. Defense assistance is provided by France and Spain under an informal agreement between the three countries.

    Haha, I just came from reading the wikipedia on Andorra and I guess I'm not the only one who finds them absolutely adorable. Having been forgotten in the Versailles treaty after WW1, they technically remained at war with Germany until the fifties when they officially declared peace. Having a military run on a defense budget where it's unusually high if it has 4.90 dollars for one year, a military of only 12 professional permanent personal. Having a system where the bigger problems are to be handled by "able-bodied men" which would happen in case of natural disasters, state of emergencies, crisis, or war. 85,000 population, with 10.2 million annual tourists. This country is so cute!

  • @marimarianations9355

    Okay so I live 50km away from Andorra and 20km away from La Tour de Carol train station (I use the R3 Rodalies from RENFE).
    -La Tour de Carol is a village on its own. The train that goes there comes from L'Hospitalet de Llobregat (Barcelona) and is the R3 from Rodalies. It's 70km away from La Seu d'Urgell (Spanish entrance to Andorra).
    -L'Hospitalet-près-l'Andorre is a different village with a different station. The train that stops there comes from somewhere in France (I have no idea from where, but I suppose it comes from Toulouse?). Both villages are 30 minutes apart by train.
    -Andorra has had an airport since the 80s. It didn't, however, have commercial flights until this year so yes, until now the closest actual airports are Girona's (just realized you didn't put that one), Toulouse's and BCN's.
    Random fact: You can drive from border to border (north to south) in 2 hours by car.
    Another random fact that no one will care about: I personally know the co-prince of Andorra and have talked to him several times. It was actually him who did my Confirmation (Christian sacrament) xD

    Iceland is not a micronation.
    300,000 people on a massive island is not a micronation.
    The Faroe Islands with their 48,000 people and very small series of mountainous, treeless islands would be a micronation.

    • @GeographyNow

      Newfoundland and Labrador United Party Actually it's more like 320,000 and I'm not saying it IS a micro state I'm saying "SOME PEOPLE" consider it a micro state. I personally don't.

      Newfoundland and Labrador United Party then you sir, definitely don't live in Iceland. we don't give a shit about whether or not we're a micro nation, we've got outdoor pools all year round

    • @Ryan98063
      @Ryan98063 10 років тому +20

      dagur7 No I live in Newfoundland, which was an independent nation, and by the same definition would have been considered a Micronation prior to confederation with Canada in 1949 (awful mistake that was). Newfoundland is about the same size as Iceland and Labrador is a vast area roughly the size of Italy, with 325,000 people all combined at the time, and only 500,000 now.
      So I do have some say in that Newfoundland and Labrador would not have been a micronation and Iceland would not either. But my desire not to want to be called a Micronation stems from the bad prejudices Canadians have against Newfoundlanders too, so I'm marginally more bitter than an Icelander.

It's a great country to go skiing and then go downtown Andorra la Vella to shop or even go to Caldea and have a nice time at their Spa + Cool swimming pools. Andorra is a microstate, not a micronation.
    Micronations include countries like Sealand which claim to be independent nations but are not officially recognized by world governments or major international organizations (but if they have had wars over independence like Somaliland or Kosovo, they don't count).
    Also, microstates are based on area, and not population, so Iceland and Cyprus don't count.

    While studying in Spain, we went a couple of times to Andorra. I must say a couple of things about what I saw. The country is BEAUTIFUL. It's literally inside the mountains of the Pyrenees and the landscape is gorgeous. However, the people living there just ruin the latter beauty due to their ego. They are rude and think they're superior to others. For instance, something I noticed is they don't stop when they see that there's someone crossing the street. Moreover, when you enter in a shop, they don't smile at you nor greet you. Besides, for them, even if they speak Catalan, they don't call their language as so. They call it "Andorran" just to piss the Catalans out. So, yeah. Anyways, I'm not trying to offend anyone, but please, dear citizens of Andorra, have some sympathy towards others from time to time. Smile and be nice! Thank you.
    And Georgraphy Now: You are fucking awesome! Keep up the GREAT work!

      Carmen Mas Franco The OP gave their opinion as an OUTSIDER how they treat foreigners- in my opinion very convincing in stating their case. You as an Andorran or as a Catalan who speaks the language have absolutely no authority about saying how you treat (or are treated if you speak the same language) non-Catalan speakers. Compared to most of the world Europeans- the French and Spanish among the worst- are extremely ignorant and arrogant, especially in the service industry. This can be quite a shock to people like the Americans where people are very friendly and in the service industry live off tips and are therefore extremely attentive to customers.

    • @TheSpiritOfTheTimes
      @TheSpiritOfTheTimes 9 років тому +1

      Manif Ormiston No, you can say what the OP said- you can go to America, have people be rude to you, receive poor service and then plead with them to 'have some sympathy for others' as the OP did. Functional literacy is an important thing in life.

      TheSpiritOfTheTimes Thanks for those replies. Look people, I explained what I lived every time I went there in a period of 2 years. Every time we had vacation in Barcelona, we were going to Andorra and that is what I lived there. FYI, I'm a Canadian. If I had read a critique over my country, I wouldn't go apewall on the OP, but rather apologize for their misfortune and hopefully wish them to not be discouraged over the latter and enjoy Canada next time they'll visit. Be kind to one another and take criticism maturely.

    I moved to Andorra last June and I've gotta say it's the best decision I have ever made! 🚀
    I love living in a quiet area away from traffic jams and big buildings, but it only takes a 5-10 minutes drive to find almost anything I need. For anything I can't find "near" me, it just takes 15-20 minutes to get to Andorra La Vella, where there are way more options available. 📚
    Also, it's worth mentioning that both corporate and income taxes are below 10% 💵, so moving here gave me the opportunity to buy a property + save/invest for the future + invest in my own business (Andorra Tech Valley) at the same time. In Spain, that wouldn't have been possible... 🤦‍♂️

    Catalan is a romance language, full stop. It is not somehow related to Spanish nor French. It just is as it is and evolved parallely from vulgar Latin as Spanish, French, Portuguese, Italian and Romanian did. It was very similar to Occitan, a language once spoken in the southern part of France, but Napoleon only wanted French language in France, so he banned it from school and society and it disappeared.

    • @RamonGonzalez-if6ei
      @RamonGonzalez-if6ei 9 років тому +3

      +brtmn Occitan still exists. In fact, it is one of the three official languages in Catalonia and currently being spoken by thousands of people in France. Even though, in France it is not an official language and the french government doesn't work for the Occitan so in France people will tend to use more French, but in Catalonia the Occitan language it will never disappear.

    I've been to Andorra this year and I actually never thought one day I'd go there when I first watched this video. I got there from Barcelona and I must say it's a very beautiful country, I was there for one day so it was very good, not boring at all. Though, it may get boring to live there after a while so I'm pretty sure every Andorran goes abroad from time to time. Still, it was so enjoyable to be there. Because of its tax haven status, alcohol is so cheap compared to other countries, I bought Finlandia Vodka 1L for just €8, I also found a smartphone case I was looking forward to getting in Hiper Andorra that I couldn't find anywhere where I live. You can get many things for cheaper in Andorra but clothes are not one of them, there's no difference there so don't buy clothes when you're there. You can buy perfumes, though.

    I think aswell it’s important to mention the relationship between Andorra and Argentina through the ski world. Andorra offers a lot of work to Argentinian seasonal workers and facilitates apartments for them. The Argentinians make up the majority of workers throughout the ski season and because of that there is a load of organisations that are based in the Argentinian-Andorran relationship. Another relationship worthy of a mention is Bolivia. Andorra has this organisation that sends volunteers to help children in need in Bolivia and help economically in various ways. I believe that Andorra is becoming more popular throughout South America for its opportunity and kindness.

    I visited Andorra in April of 2023. It wasn't hard to get in at all! It is a 3.5hr bus ride from Barcelona and it costs 36€ for a round-trip ticket. It is really beautiful and I was able to get by with Spanish and I barely noticed a difference between the Spanish accent in Andorra and in Barcelona. I only spent a few hours in the capital before going back to Barcelona and eventually to Madrid. I got to see the Guardia Civil stop a couple of guys bringing in too much tobacco into the European Union. One thing that has changed since the upload of this videa is the EU roaming policy. It does not apply to Andorra. Near the borders with Spain and France (including the town of El Pas de la Casa) there is signal from the Spanish and French networks. But in the capital, you will have to pay extortionste fees for roaming, even with an Andorran SIM card. Luckily, there is city-wide WiFi in the capital provided by Andorra Telcom. I miss Andorra and really want to go back! It is one of my favourite countries 🇦🇩

    Andorra *is not* a micronation.
    "Micronation" means you are a self-declared country with no outside diplomatic recognition. Better known examples of this would be Sealand, Seborgia, Hutt River, Westarctica, Molossia, etc. Size is irrelevant. While most "micronations" are in fact, small by coincidence, some have rather sizable territorial claims, e.g. Westarctica.
