      Some black people were not aware of their birthdays back then. My grandpa went years thinking he was born on the 18th of May then later found out he was born on the 17th of May.

      Back then they didn't give black people birth certificates and women gave birth at home with a midwife. Most people use the census for records to trace peoples ancestry.

    Back then they always have blacks whatever bday they saw fit.. a few people I know born in the 40s have 2 bdays.. the bday the hospital gave them and then the bday their mamas told them.. im going with the one the mama gave. Smh shoot some of them even have the wrong gender on their birth certificate so yeah Ma knew her bday. But they put what they wanted.

    I love how Viola Davis can walk into a part and make it her own!! Her portrayal of Ma Rainey is priceless !! I know it must have been hot in that fat suit tho !! That is what makes Viola the star that she is !!

    Great acting. Loved she knew her worth and demanded what she wanted. Seeing the way white men in power took advantage of the Black artists was real. Needed more of the history for me.

      What that hell are you talking about?? The movie is perfect and inspiring due to the way make. Rainey hold herself up upon adversity. It is not a bad side, but the opposite. Being a black woman in power and to give a dawn of how society might treated and at the same time getting exactly what she wanted is really inspiring

    The actors. GREAT! The movie...terrible! It should have been called Leevee and Ma Raineys crew. It was so little about her and more about these somewhat fictional characters that was made up and most of all, it was short. Usually movies like this are almost about 3 hours long. Again, the actors were great, but the movie itself was so way off, it was legit moments I had to check the title of the movie, to make SURE it was titled "Ma Rainey" not to mention the awkward cliff hanger of a ending that made NO SENSE and didn't even happen in real life...

      This movie, adapted from a play, literary shows 1 moment in one day (for the most part), so Netflix didn't show any side of her. It is what August Wilson wrote it to be. You want to know what Ma Rainey was like, research and don't rely on a fictional piece of a real person
