I see Oscar nods for Viola and Chadwick! I always tear up when I see Chadwick, these days..An amazing talent!....Gone too soon! And who doesn't love Denzel?
How the hell are they going to TELL HER WHEN SHE WAS BORN AND WHERE? THE CAUCACITY.. She was UNAPOLOGETICALLY HERSELF. WHY IN HELL DOES THESE PPL NEED TO QUESTION AND CORRECT HER ON HER DATE OF BIRTH AND PLACE OF BIRTH?
Some black people were not aware of their birthdays back then. My grandpa went years thinking he was born on the 18th of May then later found out he was born on the 17th of May.
Back then they didn't give black people birth certificates and women gave birth at home with a midwife. Most people use the census for records to trace peoples ancestry.
Back then they always have blacks whatever bday they saw fit.. a few people I know born in the 40s have 2 bdays.. the bday the hospital gave them and then the bday their mamas told them.. im going with the one the mama gave. Smh shoot some of them even have the wrong gender on their birth certificate so yeah Ma knew her bday. But they put what they wanted.
I love how Viola Davis can walk into a part and make it her own!! Her portrayal of Ma Rainey is priceless !! I know it must have been hot in that fat suit tho !! That is what makes Viola the star that she is !!
Great acting. Loved she knew her worth and demanded what she wanted. Seeing the way white men in power took advantage of the Black artists was real. Needed more of the history for me.

What that hell are you talking about?? The movie is perfect and inspiring due to the way make. Rainey hold herself up upon adversity. It is not a bad side, but the opposite. Being a black woman in power and to give a dawn of how society might treated and at the same time getting exactly what she wanted is really inspiring
Viola is a great actress but why did she agreed to the makeup it was disgrace and he looked like she had two black eyes what was with all the sweating as well as I've looked on original pictures and she don't look like that the makeup was terrible.
The actors. GREAT! The movie...terrible! It should have been called Leevee and Ma Raineys crew. It was so little about her and more about these somewhat fictional characters that was made up and most of all, it was short. Usually movies like this are almost about 3 hours long. Again, the actors were great, but the movie itself was so way off, it was legit moments I had to check the title of the movie, to make SURE it was titled "Ma Rainey" not to mention the awkward cliff hanger of a ending that made NO SENSE and didn't even happen in real life...
Just open your Horizon and Eyes She's A true definition of a well-rounded Actress. This is just my opinion. Food For Thought sometimes your eyes will definitely play tricks on you she has a lot of great movies and she plays a lot of wonderful characters
This movie, adapted from a play, literary shows 1 moment in one day (for the most part), so Netflix didn't show any side of her. It is what August Wilson wrote it to be. You want to know what Ma Rainey was like, research and don't rely on a fictional piece of a real person
She acted like that because she knew that being nice would get her nowhere at that time, and those people would just end up using her. And you can also tell she cared for the people who actually cared about her in the movie
You try being a black professional woman for 24 hours in the1920's deep South (or even now) and see if you get anywhere being a simpering shrinking violet.
The movie was too short for me, wish the movie was longer and shown more of her life.
Same!!!
It was a play by August Wilson brought to the screen. I would love a movie too
Yes I agree do over this movie could of been better they are good actors but disappointed of the movie
Yes I was getting bored of the musician scenes
Agreed
Chadwick and Viola deserve Oscars.
First, why this movie is not being talk about enough. Second, Chadwick is a legend and was a legend before Black Panther.
No he wasn't dude. He was the black dude that played dead black dudes. Not a legend at all. Don't let racial pride cause you to sound slow

When i tell y'all that Chadwicks performance is chilling and historic... it's his best performance
I love Chadwick, but he committed blasphemy to the indefinite degree. Script or not, he chose to say illicit unspeakable insults to God.
@@tenaleverette123 its crazy cause it seems like he was a sacrifice of some sort and why did the put the movie out after his passing? Kinda weird

Still so sad about Chadwick Boseman. Amazing, isn't it, the impact some people have on the world in general.

Over 500 songs and you choose to highlight the one song that talks about her sexuality? Talk about an AGENDA.
You might want to go back and listen to some of the lyrics of blues singers from that era. Sexuality was a major topic.

This movie just showed how mean she was, it was more about him than her, it was nothing to this movie needed more content
Which parts of the movie made you feel that she was being mean?
She had an heart attack.
Strong woman she was. Person can be purple skin, and still admire you. Because strong spirit, free thinker. Pioneer for women of any skin color.

We need a complete story of ma rainey
She is just great women, netflix just show her bad side. i think so
SPOILER ALERT: she gave an explanation that white people only want her voice, so she does everything to be not taken as granted

I was wondering what she passed away from. May she rest in peace.
So how did she die?
Heart Attack😢
Ma died from a heart attack in 1939, she was only in her 50's, RIP Ma.
Such good performances in this movie. More like a play.
at 1:32 that's actually a photo of Bessie Smith and her husband. Not Ma Rainey and hers.
JoanRudith big facts that was Bessie and her husband and adopted son
Excellent movie... She was a complex woman
I thought Viola was wearing a fat suit in this film. She gained weight for this role...I think 30 pounds.
I love this movie maney stand up for her
We need a biopic now
Yes , Viola Davis is that Boss !!! 💖🙏

Awesome 😍💋 💝💖♥️❤️
This was more thorough of her life than the movie aside from the great actors the movie could've lasted longer
They got all that Black make-up Smeared all over her face and eyeliner smudged ugh
I think that was on purpose, have you seen pics of her? Plus it was hot as hell and they need to show this. Look at the Pepsi scene again.
Exactly! I haven’t seen one pic of Ma Rainey with makeup like that! Why portray her to look that way?
