- How is living in Soviet apartment blocks. High rise apartment buildings all around Eastern Europe. Mostly built in 70s and 80s. They all might look the same but they all feel.. different. Some called Khrushchyovka some called Brezhnevka. Depending on year built. There are hundreds of thousands of these built around Eastern Europe. Very hard to not spot.

This is actually a better guide to Soviet apartment blocks than any other documentaries, it makes me want to learn more about the daily life of the Soviet people. Very educational with a touch of dark humour in it. Well done, Comrade Boris.
Some apartments may look depressing, but the renovated ones in the more western Warsaw pact countries are most of the time better than modern luxury apartments due to transport and community
Seconded, it’s super interesting! It’s of course a very personal angle and view this is made from, so it is a window in that respect
@@drouge187 yeah but warzsawa pact countries is not the same as soviet union so they could have been in batter shape from the begining (dont know if they are) then in Estonia for example the apartments was a little batter because they had it best in soviet.

Boris continuing to make videos after saying he was no longer going to upload videos must mean he's re-discovered the joy that he felt he had lost. If this is true, then I am very happy for him.

Not from soviet union, but man... I've spent first 20 years of my life in such a 5 story building. And the glorious gravel finish brings back childhood memories of late 70's - early 80's. Those steep stairs, tight basements, linoleum on the floor, broken swings in the playground, empty shelves in shops with nothing but vinegar to buy... I felt so alive then. (Maybe because I was 40 years younger ;)

I once spent some time studying in Russia and lived in a 60's neighborhood and honestly, everything in this video is spot on and makes me feel nostalgic haha
Yup, I want to go back to Moscow and my Stalinka. There was a food shop in the basement that also had liquor secretly, an old couple in the stairwell that would perform any song if you tipped them, a gang of cats who judged all the guests on their estate, and a triplex of rooms that got merged together into a bar with a brothel right across the hall worked by a cute pair of sisters and sometimes their friends.
@@Mortablunt Haha those are the kind of shops you can still buy alcohol at after 10pm, nice to have those around! And damn that place sounds like a Russian-cyberpunk 2077 crossover vibe :)
@@ridick4nothing I guess you could say that. Out of all the places I've lived, it was definitely the liveliest and tightest community. Would recommend, though not for the weak nerved.
Boris forget a few stuff:
- At end of staircase, top level, there is ladder that goes to roof with trapdoor, few have ventured there
- At basement where is air attack bunker, some old angry woman put huge drawer and block the door
- Top notch security system, another old angry woman watching on window
- Every two buildings there is air raid siren, every wednesday start of month you hear siren

"Heat insulation about as good as sheet metal" hit me hard
In the school i went during middle and high school, when the glass from the classroom windows break, they would replace it with sheet metal.
Add the Brazilian summer and you have the combination ever
How did they...come to that solution? Like was there any other things tried, was it a standard for schools in the area?
@@nguyenten6877 There's always some random guy in the neighbourhood making either renovations or an actual house, and sheet metal is a very cheap (thus the usual go-to) option for roof tiling - so it's something you don't need to go looking for too far in case you need to "temporarily" patch a hole in a building

The detail about the 5 story buildings hits on the spot. Up to date, many residential buildings are still constructed exactly 5 stories high because anything beyond that makes constructors legally obliged to make an elevator.
Babushkas living on 5th floor reading this: *blyat*
Same shit happens in Argentina plus you can build a 5 storey high building with a degree from a polytechnic school instead of being a civil engineer
@@federicomarintuc ¿te referís al título de maestro mayor de obra?
@@federicomarintuc Huh interesting. In North America cities have "zoning" so literally it says what you HAVE to built on a plot of land that the city tells you can build. And because it's north America, most of it is zoned as single-family suburban homes. The American suburbs, mcmansions whatever you want to call them. Sure you might think they look huge and private, but really they're wasteful and force everyone to own a car. And that's all that you're allowed to build in most places.
Funny thing is, many people here are BEGGING for 5 storey type of buildings since housing prices are insane and cities need to be intensified since well everyone owning a car isn't a viable economic solution.

Ah yes, the soviet apartment blocks. From East Germany to Kamchatka, and from Arkhangelsk to the equator, these were copy pasted literally everywhere.
Very accurate depiction of Russia, I like it!
This. They were copy/pasted as far away as the People's Democratic Republic of Victoria, AU. They are quite common around the inner city of Melbourne. Some of them are about 30 stories high. IIRC they were funded & built by the Victorian Government Housing Commission in the 1960s & early 1970s. And usually, they have a tram stop nearby :)
@@bury_the_elite65294 The British made similar apartment blocks back then too, was a common idea/trend all over at that time.
@@stigrabbid589 exactly, almost every working class neighborhood here in spain also has this kind of buildings, mostly done during the 60's or 70's

They were actually very popular and highly sought after when they were built. It meant for a lot of people moving from old school "communal bathroom on every other floor"-apartment buildings or fire stove heated one room-hovels without running water or electricity to a bright multi-room apartment with a modern kitchen, laundry machine and individual bathrooms.
These buildings turned out to be eerily familiar to me, and when I saw the familiar logo of the alcohol store 1:03 , I was able to find this particular place. if you're wondering, this is what the looks like sleeping area of Tallinn, the capital of Estonia.

BORIS IS BACK! I am so happy you continue to make videos for your loyal subscriber
This took me right back to my early childhood, when I used to live in an old _danchi_ , AKA Japanese mass housing block! Not as magical as the Soviet housing block, but it had its charms.
I had probably the most slavic experience you could get, growing up (0-18). I lived in the village in countryside in apartment block. Like in the middle of nowhere, they decided to put two apartment blocks back in like 1950 1960 in Poland and thats where I lived. Honestly best place I have ever lived, thinking to move back there if I have the money and someone will want to move out.
How have I never been to a slavic nation but these photos are still so nostalgic❓
Estonia isn't a slavic nation and this was filmed in Estonia :D
simple, be from post communist nation
I feel you, I'm from Brazil and this feels weirdly nostalgic. Most stuff from this channel actually... What kind of black magic is this?
“Not even chair. Sit on bed” this also applies to many apartments in America 😂😂
This actually reminds me of like half of my childhood, even when i never lived in one of these. Basically the rest of my faminy grew up in these, and nearly all of my babushka's still live in those. Even when i travel around Czechia, i see the desing nearly everywhere. I also think ive never seen a soviet aparment better explained :D
Now im gonna get drunk
i havent laughed so hard in a long time. I hope this video goes viral so you get some of your motivation back and the credit that you deserve. Big love to Gopnik Boris
In Romania, most blocks are Soviet Blocks, but I’ve never seen looking the way they look in this video, not even the cheapest apartement I’ve seen on the market wasn’t looking like it. Now I feel happy that I live in Romania.
Allthough they are following the same strcuture, so small bathroom, small kitchen, big living and elevator on the side. :))
Yeah Boris just shows a batch that haven't been renovated, I got two blocks in the middle of nowhere in my little polish town and the apartments don't look that bad.

Ah, this brings back memories. I grew up in a soviet style apartment block.
I grown up in a similiar one. We had family above and under us. It was so easy to visit grandparents and cousins. It used to have a shop at the ground floor, i miss it
@@TankswillRule We were on the first floor and had the security system from the video. Needless to say that the washing machine was in the kitchen. There was an elevator though, but our block was 7 story high. We also had the multitude of babushkas sitting on the benches in front of the block enterance. Those were like the local news, they knew everything that was going on. You couldn't get anything pass them without them noticing and commenting. It's like they had x-ray vision. These Soviet apartment blocks always make me think of visiting my family in Poland as a kid. Flights from the US are expensive so I didn't go too often, but in the few times I went between 2006 and 2012, it was very nice and my family's town had a few apartments like these. It wasn't a big city, but it was big enough to have a couple of them.
I visited again this summer, and everything's a lot more modern. My grandparents who moved back to Poland from the US now live in a modern apartment building. There are a few apartment buildings that still stand from the 70s and 80s, but most have been converted to look more modern, and other new ones have been built.

Aaaah, Plattenbauten. As much as I know this is a far cry from "house with a garden and a picket fence", brutalist architecture has a feel of "we do not have much, how can we make sure everybody get a share of what there is" that hits me right in the feels. I mean, electricity, and actual indoor plumbing -- no kidding, 20 years back, I still saw flats with toilet half a landing down (where you have the elevator) and showers that were very obviously plumbed into the kitchen water line.
Electricity, plumbing, gas, central heating, TV, wire phone and speaker (like a wired radio thing) wires. They're quite functional and can be comfortable (basically all the insides of the flat are a custom thing. The flat in the video hasn't been renovated for years) - it just doesn't look good.

Aw shit, the nostaliga! I grew up in a block like this, repurposed from a military base to civil use. When we moved out from the block, there was a renovation going on, they found old helmets and russian pr0n magazines in one of the empty apartments. These panel houses as we call them in Hungary are surprisingly resilient to pretty much anything and if you live on the top floor, you don't have to turn heating on ever - neighbors do it for you! (Lived 4 years again as an adult on the 11th floor). Downside - extremely dry air inside which easily causes nosebleeds in the mornings and some pests simply love these houses. You either choose to live with ants or roaches, I had the luck to have ants both times... And they always come with a playground around, if it had one of the metal skeleton of a rocket that was so cold in the winter you instantly froze to it, or so hot in the summer that it gave you forever lasting burn marks, you had the best childhood. We laid on top of it as kids and discussed the Big Questions of Life... Ah. Thanks Boris for giving me back a slice of my childhood! :D
