- In this video, I share an update on how my modern woody lavender topiaries are growing - two months since creating them from the overgrown woody lavender in my garden. I give them a slight trim plus show you the hopeful signs of tiny new growth amongst the larger growth.

Oh I'm so so glad you made topiaries out of these!!! I love them
Thanks so much! 🤗 I love them too. They are imperfect, but I truly love how they turned out!
I do enjoy the thought of a old lavender becoming a bonsai. I think it looks neat.
Thanks C A - I hope it looks great while flowering this Summer…and hopefully will look even better with more growth come next Winter. Fingers crossed! 🤞😀
That is awesome. A little patience and imagination can go a long way.
I love the topiary. They look like an old Japanese Bush. Nothing wrong with that. They deserve a lot of respect!
I just watched your lavender pruning video from 10 months ago and am so glad you decided to work with these overgrown lavender plants instead of taking them out completely!!!!!!!
Your videos inspired me to ‘attack’ my overgrown and woody lavender! I have a big job ahead, but there is enough new green growth on what I have trimmed already that I think they are salvable as a bush, rather than topiary at this stage. 😂Thank you for sharing your experience and giving me the kickstart I needed. I was feeling quite overwhelmed before watching your videos! 🙏🏻☺️
It's 10pm, and i can't wait till morning, so i can tackle my overgrown woody lavender. Thanks so much for the inspiration!
Nice and easy video 👏🏻
Great improvement of the plant and if it did not work you’d start over. Thanks for experimenting for us with overgrown lavender!! Well done!
Thanks so much Teresa! This definitely has been an interesting experiment! It’s amazing how much new green growth improves the overall look. 🌱👍
Lovely to see this update. They are doing so well! Thank you 🌷
Love the follow-up - it inspires me to be more careful with my new lavender (that replaced a too woody set of plants).
It’s looking so much better! Great job❤
Thank you Marsha! 💜 I think the fresh green growth helps! 😀🌱
Thanks for the update I think it looks good, just came from the garden center today and forgot to purchase new hand clippers and a sickle for my lavender
Thanks Gail! “…and a sickle” made me laugh if only because it can be quite a job tackling lavender! 💜
@@GardenSanity so I’m finding out 🙂
Blessings
Looks great!
I did in fact lose all 4 of my phenomenal lavender to winter wet. I even dug out and inspected roots hoping for any signs of life.
Oh that’s a shame. 😟 But yes, Winter wet can drown the roots. Maybe try it in containers instead? I know it’s not the same as having lavender in the garden . . .
It usually is not a issue in that area but I have taken steps to prevent it in the future if it occurs again.
It’s coming along! I’m currently at war with the rabbits and the skunk. I haven’t had time for new plants.
Wow. That stinks, Will… probably literally. I’m so sorry. 😟
Hello There, how you pursuit if my lavender is in between both lavenders with pruned? Thanks
So what are we to conclude from the fact that the stump produced fresh shoots? That the ‘received wisdom’ about woody stems never being able to produce new shoots is not really true?
Well, it’s not what normally happens at all, otherwise all of those horrid woody stems I previously had would have been covered with fresh growth. And I would have been thrilled! 😀 That stump is connected to the topiary, so maybe that has something to do with the new growth? 🤔
@@GardenSanity Quite! But it is interesting to see what can happen after your hard pruning back beyond where we are all recommended to prune, wouldn’t you say?
Definitely! Now I want to test this more. 🤣 And I’m laughing because I removed all of the other stumps… so no test subjects available.
@@GardenSanity I’m not too surprised, after all, you have said in previous videos, you’re not going for the ‘driftwood garden look’ in those beds!
And see, maybe I should have: I could have added rocks and shells, some beach sand…oh yes I could have really pulled off a natural driftwood look! 🤭 But seriously, I’ll be watching those little lavender shoots closely over the Summer. 🔎👀
just bought 2 phenom this year. can i prune them every fall? to keep from getting woody. how long do yours remain in flower.. i never have good luck w/ lav. but fell for this one and giving it one more try. seems like a pretty tough plant!
Hi LainyJane - this variety is wonderful, and I think much easier to grow than other varieties, so I think you’ll like it! Yes, I prune mine every Fall. 👍 Look in the Description area above for a link to my lavender pruning video which should help you. 😀💜
