Loved this message! Thank you! Been crying about everything, legs feel like lead, and have been extraordinarily restless. Everything was pointing to classic overtraining, and I was glad to have this message to reference as a means to convince myself to tone it down a notch. Much appreciated!!

Maybe a stupid question, but I am currently going through overtraining syndrome myself and was wondering how you are doing 6 years later? Are you able to recover fully from it and are now able to train normally again?

I think it’s worth emphasising that there’s a difference between training and just running or working out. What I mean is training is only training if it delivers a specific stimulus to your body to adapt and is paired with appropriate recovery. If you get a “training session” in because you feel you have to and it just adds to your fatigue, there’s no training effect and you’re not faster for it. Training is the tool, not a goal in itself. If you can make yourself understand that key distinction you can resist the urge to get a “training” session in that ultimately hurts your progress rather than assists it

I went pretty aggressive for twenty one days straight. Now, even breathing is hurting. How to get past this??? Magnesium potassium sodium? Or just time? Anyone? Buehler?

Supplements can be worth a try (you could also include iron. Don't supplement more potassium than maybe 50% of the recommended daily intake! Overdosing potassium is high risk!).
But seriously tone down the training for a week. Take some days off and then do some easy runs.

I was looking for this, I was used to being pushed to the limit back when I was in school. When I do that at the age of 30+, my performances have tremendously worsened. My avarage heart rate is higher than before for the same speed after being training so much. I have given myself 2 months to slow down doing MAF training (low heart rate) but still do not get the same performance. I wish somebody could help me.

Hey guys. I was never a runner before and i have pushed 40. I have done racket sport at a high level and also climbing for 5 years. All i can say is that now im back running again after a 4 month burnout- i also started way too hard - got problems with tendons. My times didnt, still dont really improve much. Borland i think somehow u have to accept that condition is a fresh thing - after 2 weeks no training u loose up to 20 percent speed. Another thing as u get older is to train max 4 to 5 times a week MAX. Now i run 90% easy. U have no idea how slowly i run on 127 in pulse - its so hard mentally. Nowadays my priorities changed - when corona struck i was training for races i really wasnt ready for. I want to get faster, sure. But i have cancelled all plans to race snd just do maffetone training for 1 year. I also started to do at least 1 run a week on trails, no measurement of pulse, just enjoy myself. I ran 14 k tech trails yesterday - feeling great. How many can do that really? So what if elites do that in more than under half my times! Race yourself. Try low heart rate teaining, and i mean low. 65% of max pulse. Be honest. I can walk faster, but i think my improvements will come - but age render u to train more easy, and it takes years, not months to make major gains. When i was under 30 improvnent in strength came monthly. Just my thougts. There is always someone faster - find running u like. Trail running a weekend morning, bringing gear, food etc. I love it!

@@skt1fenixthelegendkid521 same here. Im back again and have slowly built up to 30 - 60 km a week. I run much more slowly now on easy days. I been running on and off for 4 years, but to be honest the constant breaks has made me slower than before. The training plans online etc. Is just junk - train for 18 weeks run a marathon. Sure. In my age i have realized that is 3 years, no injuries , good habits, low stress with consistent easy running. The psychological factor of ocertraining is even more scary than injuries. I got depressed, gained alot of weight and had zero energy. I have to work too… was it worth it. No. Chasing seconds for races, comparing uself to others like an idiot. Maffetone approach has helped me back though - i feel so energized, my resting heartrate is dropping. Im running much much slower though. Like a snail really. I can live with that.
